The Dr. Sam Sheppard House Revisited….

July 4, 2014 marked the 60th anniversary of Bay Village’s most notorious crime - the mur-der of Marilyn Sheppard. Much has been written on the murder of Dr. Sam Sheppard’s wife and the lifelong controversy over Dr. Sam’s guilt or innocence that followed. The house where the murder took place stood at 28944 Lake Road in Bay Village. It was torn down in 1993 to make way for a newer home built by another family. The Villager was there the day the Sheppard house was demol-ished. Here is a photo from our archives of this now-vanished scene of Bay Village history. SJMC Festival of the Arts is a Hit!

Great music was part of the 21st St. John Medi-cal Center Festival of the Arts. Irresistable Latin beats were part of the opening night festivities as music by Miguel Cintron delivered a lively back-beat outside the private party in the Sponsor’s Refreshment Tent. On Saturday, Caliber delivered red-hot country tunes that could be heard across the festival grounds. Cats on Holiday capped the entertainment on Sunday with their popular mix of country, cajun and blues tunes as Dennis Devito and crew proved as popular as ever.

Summer Soulstice

Perfect summer weather graced the grounds of St. John Medical Center last weekend as the hospital hosted its 21st Festival of the Arts.

Thousands of guests visited the Fair over the three days of the event, enjoying a wine tasting party to kick things off Friday night. Two days of arts and crafts followed, and Sun-day Mass under a tent attracted hundreds as this signature summer event was once again a hit.

“This year’s Festival was one of our best,” said SJMC Marketing Director Patrick J. Garmone. “The weather was perfect, the crowds came in a steady stream all weekend

and we had a wide selection of quality artists and craftsmen for people to browse, all thanks to our many volunteers and the work of Festival Chairs Ardis Radak and Camille An-ter.”

The Friday Sponsor’s Party was a popular place with memorable gourmet plates prepared by SJMC Executive Chef John Ellis on opening night

The VIP area for Friday’s opening night party was filled with dignitaries like Sr. Judith Ann Karam, Robert Smith of Spero Smith and many healthcare leaders from the northeast Ohio community.

Dental insurance can be both a blessing and a curse, as is medical insur-ance. Certainly, you are lucky if you have some kind of benefits to help with your dental treatment. Sometimes though, dental insurance may somewhat inconvenience you in order to get the best benefits. If your dentist and the office manager do not understand the intricacies of your den-tal insurance you could stand to lose benefits and have to pay more out of your pocket.

A perfect example of this was my recent trip to my dermatologist. I come from a very freckly fam-ily, and we all go for an-nual checkups to make sure that there are no moles that need to be removed. When I went to my dermatolo-gist, just a couple of weeks ago, he did find something that that he didn’t think was important, but wanted to remove it anyway. I told him that I had the time if he had the time and to just go ahead and do it then and there. Because he knew about my medical insur-ance, he had told me that

it would be to my benefit to come back for another appoint-ment to have it removed because my medical insur-ance will not pay to have these moles removed on the same day of the ex-amination. Does it make sense? Not at all. Was I happy to hear that he could make the most out of medi-cal benefits and less out of pocket for me? Absolutely.

The same is true in our dental office in Bay Vil-lage. We work very hard to get the most benefits out of your dental plan. Our office manager, Joyce, regularly speaks to insur-ance companies and has a real knack for determining what the best way to ac-complish treatment is in or-der for you to get the most benefit.

Another thing you should know is that most dental plans are on a year-ly cycle, which renews in January. If you still have dental benefits left, now is the best time to get in to see us so that we can plan out your treatment so that if you do need some type of major dental treatment, we

can help you use your ben-efits for this year and plan for next year. If you know that you have that bro-ken tooth, a nagging, dull toothache for a long time, or some gum disease, seek out the treatment you need. Don’t lose your benefits. If you don’t use your benefits

by the end of the year, this year’s benefits will be gone forever.

Call us today for a free consultation at 440-892-1810 and let’s see how we can help you maximize your benefits. We love to give people a very beauti-ful, healthy smile.

Baseball’s best players gathered in Minneapolis this week to participate in the All-Star Game. As a fan, you can admire the skills of these players. And as an investor, you can learn some valuable lessons from them. For example, All Stars tend to be consistently excellent, year after year. When you invest, you, too, can strive for consis-tency by following a long-term strategy and staying invested in the financial markets through “up” and “down” periods. All Stars also are pretty good at avoiding errors in the field. As you invest, try to avoid common “errors” such as investing either too conservatively or too aggressively. Finally, All Stars develop new skills to prepare themselves for opportunities that occur during games. To invest success-fully, you need to prepare yourself for opportunities by making the right moves, such as having enough cash available in your portfolio to purchase appropriate investments at good prices. You may never race across a baseball diamond. But as an investor, you can still pick up some “gems” of wisdom from the All Stars. Everybuddy was there! From Mac Dad-dy to Coco, Kalo’s little brother and litter mate. There was even a cool birfday cake made by Just Dogs Gourmet with a sparkler on top. Mac Daddy tried to jump up on the table and eat it

before the other guests could get a bite.

Kalo7 (who is named after former Cleveland Indians great Kenny Lofton, number 7 for the Tribe) had a great

21st Festival of the Arts: One of the Best!

This was a special year for St. John Medical Center’s Festival of the Arts held last weekend on the hospital’s spacious and welcoming Westlake grounds.

Not only was this the 21st staging of the popular show, it was one of the

best - drawing lively crowds all three days of the show.

“It was 22 years ago that we made the decision to host an arts and crafts show on the west side, and it has blos-somed into a annual tradi-tion eagerly awaited by thou-sands each year,” noted SJMC President and CEO William A. Young.

Young was quick to ac-knowledge the hard work that goes into the show, start-ing with event organizers Ar-dis Radak and Camille Anter. “As many of you know, an event of this magnitude and scope takes careful planning and execution,” said Young. Thanks go out to commit-tee members Doug Bolen, Sr. Kendra Bottoms, Michael Duncan, John Ellis, Paul For-thofer, Patrick Garmone, Jack Hall, Pamela Hoch, Sally Jan-uary, Michael Johnson, James Kamholz, Mary Kiczek, Ju-lie Keifer, Bruce Konieczny, Cheryl O’Malley and Chris-tine Richings.

Hundreds of guests took part in the health screenings that included blood pres-sure, cholesterol, blood sugar and balance testing among other offerings, thanks to SJMC Commu-nity Outreach.

On Sunday morning, the public was invited to celebrate Mass as Fr. Phillip Racco of St. Berna-dette Church officiated. Fr. Racco reminded ev-eryone in his homily that of all the works of art in the world, there is none more valuable than you, a person for whom God’s Son Jesus Christ gave the priceless gift of salvation.

*According to NASA, a large tree releases .31kilograms of oxygen per day. In one year an acre

of trees can provide enough oxygen for 18 people.

Note: Not only are trees important for oxygen manufacture, but they absorb odors, pollutant gasesand filter particulates out of the air. Trees absorb Nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulfur dioxide and

carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while releasing the oxygen back into the air. Wouldn’t you love to go to sleep at night knowing the home of your dreams would be waiting for you in the morning? Thanks to Ohio Family Realty’s “Create Your Own Search,” now you can!
