The Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School Class of 2020 will be the 30th graduating class since the merger of Villa Angela Academy and St. Joseph High School in 1990. The tradition and mission of those two proud institutions are alive and well today and are the reason VASJ remains strong, viable and important to the stability and strength of our neighborhoods in northeastern Ohio.

One of the characteristics of a Marianist education is to “Educate for Service, Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation.” As you read through this publication, you will see many examples of how the students of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School are able to participate in real-life opportunities that develop the character and experience needed to go out into the world and lead and serve others.

There is an increased spiritual excitement throughout the building, in part due to the hard work of the Campus Ministry team. This excitement has carried over to all activities at VASJ, including academics, athletics and the overall atmosphere in all that we do.

The sixth counsel of St. Angela begins, “Give good example to your students, teaching them more by what you do than by what you say.” Much of our success here at VASJ is the result of faculty and staff taking their responsibility of teaching to heart and understanding the important role they play in the development of their students, not only academically but also spiritually and socially.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School is fortunate to have a large family of supportive alumni and alumnae of our founding schools who understand and appreciate that the values and traditions of their school are the cornerstone for all that is taught and learned at VASJ. This family has been by our side from the beginning, providing much-needed financial and spiritual support. Your continued support will be instrumental as we move forward and continue our mission.

VASJ students participate in CSPJ Mass and Rally for Life BY KRISTEN MOTT

Thirty-nine VASJ students from ninth through 12th grade participated in the Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice Mass and Rally for Life Oct. 1 in downtown Cleveland.

The annual event drew more than 400 high school students representing Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice (CSPJ). CSPJ is a network of students and educators from Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Cleveland that is rooted in Catholic social teaching.

“It was a blessed day for our youth to become more aware of the gift of life in all its stages and for us adults to witness their

passion to create a world that respects all of God’s creation,” said Sr. Denise Vlna, OSU, who is volunteering at VASJ this year.

The students celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and then marched to Public Square where there was a student-led rally for life. Students advocated for a variety of issues regarding human life and respecting human dignity.

Bishop Nelson Perez shared words written by Pope Francis in “Christ is Alive,” his post-synodal apostolic exhortation: “Dear young people, please, do not be bystanders in life. Get involved! Jesus was not a bystander. He got

involved. Don’t stand aloof, but immerse yourselves in the reality of life, as Jesus did.”

After an opening prayer at the rally, students addressed the group on various respect life themes, including domestic violence, suicide, abortion, gun violence, capital punishment and euthanasia.

“Our students have experienced, some first-hand, the ways in which human dignity is often not respected,” said Brianna Wilson, director of Campus Ministry at VASJ. “It was powerful to see them praying and advocating for the justice they so desperately seek.”

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School exceeded its goal of raising $10,000 during #WeGiveCatholic on Dec. 3.

A total of 89 donors gave more than $12,000 on Giving Tuesday. The money raised will go toward renovating the VASJ Martyrs Chapel, a quiet, reflective space on campus for students, faculty and staff.

The chapel was built in the early 1970s to hold morning Mass. Originally named after the four churchwomen who died in El Salvador, including Ursuline Sr. Dorothy Kazel, the chapel has since come to recognize others in the Marianist and Ursuline traditions who have died as witnesses to their faith. The chapel includes an area for students, faculty and staff to leave intentions, allowing the community to join in offering up prayers. The space can also be used as a confessional, which gives students the chance to participate in the Sacrament of Penance.

Renovations will include updating the look and feel of the chapel and turning it into a more

welcoming, prayerful space. The school’s goal is to refresh the space’s esthetics and create a dedicated prayer intention area so that students, faculty and staff can utilize the Martyrs Chapel to its full potential.

“We are all thankful for the generosity and support shown to our students during #WeGiveCatholic,” said Bill Cervenik ’72, VASJ president. “Thanks to everyone’s generosity, our students will soon have a chapel where they can engage in personal prayer and reflect on their faith.”

#WeGiveCatholic is an annual one-day giving event that provides Catholic schools, parishes, charities, special ministries and nonprofits affiliated with the Diocese of Cleveland the opportunity to connect with current donors and establish relationships with new ones.

“It is heartwarming to see the support the Viking community has shown to our students,” Cervenik added. “We have exceeded our goal and are anxious to begin the long-awaited renovations to the Martyrs Chapel.”

Thank you for your outpouring of support!

GEM (Girls Empowerment Meetings) is a club geared toward young ladies who are seeking a safe space to share and discuss the unique experiences that bond them as women and partici-pate in activities that aim to enhance self-image, self-confidence and other topics pertaining to opportunities for women. GEM met in January to focus on the topic “New Year, New Me.” The girls worked on New Year’s resolutions/goal setting and created vision boards and bracelets to remind themselves of their goals for 2020.

Liz Sellers ’02 named VASJ head women’s volleyball coach

The Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School Athletic Department is excited to announce the appointment of Liz (Guard) Sellers ’02 as the new head women’s volleyball coach.

Sellers is an alumna of VASJ, where she was a member of the 2001 OHSAA DIII State Championship team under former coach Mark Royer ’75.

Sellers continued her academic and athletic careers at Eastern Kentucky University, where she received both her Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations and her Master of Science in physical education and sports administration. She was a four-year starter for the NCAA Division I Colonels. In 2005, she was named an All-American, the first in program history. In 2015, Sellers was inducted into the Eastern Kentucky University Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of her stellar collegiate career.

Since leaving EKU, Sellers has spent more than a decade coaching women’s volleyball, most notably as an assistant at the University of Tulsa and at EKU. In this past 2019-20 women’s volleyball season, Sellers was an assistant coach for the VASJ Vikings.

“We are excited to have Liz as our head women’s volleyball coach,” said Elvis Grbac ’88, VASJ athletic director. “She brings a new and exciting perspective to high school volleyball that will transpire into a competitive and winning program. Her experience and accomplishments can only build upon the tradition and foundation here at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School.”

V illa Angela-St. Joseph High School welcomed 82 local first-grade students on Tuesday, Dec. 10 for the school’s annual Christmas on Campus event.

The children enjoyed a variety of holiday-themed activities, including cookie decorating, ornament making, Christmas games and a “snowball” fight. The first-grade students, who came from Our Lady of the Lake, St. Jerome, St. John Nottingham Lutheran and St. Aloysius, also got to take photos with Santa Claus.

Christmas on Campus is a long-standing tradition at VASJ. During the event, VASJ seniors are paired with a first-grade “buddy.”

“I felt like I provided structure and confidence for the kids. I loved running the craft room!” said VASJ senior Sarah Carroll.

This year’s event was made extra special thanks to the generous support of students, parents and alumni who donated Christmas stockings filled with small toys, candy, hats and mittens, and school supplies. Each VASJ senior was able to select a Christmas stocking to give to his or her buddy.

“I believe my service made a difference by putting a smile on the kids’ faces, especially when they got their stockings,” said VASJ senior Deonte Warren.

VASJ senior Henry Spear added, “My kid had a great time. He kept saying he wished he was in my family, which was sweet. … It was nice to see how grateful he was when getting a stocking.”

Aiyanna Martin ‘21 learns public safety skillsBY CHERYL STASHINKO

I n just six short weeks this summer, VASJ Junior Aiyanna Martin ’21 gained valuable professional development and work skills through the Public Safety Career Pipeline Program.

The program, now in its third year, focuses on increasing women and minorities in law enforcement and public safety fields to reflect the communities being served. Martin went through extensive training, learned about careers in public safety, created a resume, participated in mock interviews, completed a capstone project, earned CPR certification, and created a website to promote her personal brand.

Initially, Martin wasn’t sure about a career in public safety but was encouraged by her step-dad, who works as an EMT, to take part in the program. Martin participated in rigorous, physical training that firefighters and officers go through, including going up a building in gear and learning how to put out a dumpster fire. Similar to how police and fire departments form close relationships within their units, the same sense of teamwork and support was felt among the students. “It felt like home. We learned as a family,” Martin said.

Martin said that completing CPR certification and the capstone project proved to be the most rewarding aspects of the summer program. At only 15, Martin is proud to be equipped with the skills necessary to save a life. For her capstone, she researched the impact of poverty within the African-American community and resources available to help those in need. This project deeply impacted her, as she acknowledged having friends who face economic hardships. Reflecting on the project, Martin said, “Even being young, I have a voice and can make a positive change in the world.” Her capstone team earned third place out of more than 20 teams.

For Martin, the Public Safety Career Pipeline Program was more than just a summer experience. Her eyes were opened to the possibility of careers serving her community. After learning about one team leader’s decision to join the Air Force, Martin was inspired to learn more and consider the same option for herself after VASJ and before entering college.

Misrach Ewunetie ’20 has received a full four-year scholarship to Princeton University through the QuestBridge National

College Match program. College Match Scholarship recipients

are granted early admission to one of QuestBridge’s college partners with a full, four-year scholarship that covers tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and travel expenses.

Ewunetie said she learned about the scholarship opportunity through a community-based organization that she’s involved with called Minds Matter Cleveland.

As part of the application process, students must complete an online application form and essays and submit two letters of recommendation from teachers, a school report from a high school counselor, a high school transcript and standardized test scores. Students can rank up to 12 colleges that they would like to be “matched” with. In addition to Princeton, Ewunetie said she included Stanford University and Yale University on her list.

Students are notified in early December if they’ve been matched with one of QuestBridge’s college partners. Ewunetie said she was “really excited” when she found out she had been matched with Princeton.

“It felt like a weight off my shoulders and that I wouldn’t have to stress too much about college decisions anymore,” she said.

This year, 1,127 finalists were selected as College Match Scholarship recipients to 40 QuestBridge college partners, with 51 students being matched to Princeton.

Princeton is a non-binding school, which means students admitted through the match aren’t required to commit to attending the institution. However, Ewunetie said Princeton is her top choice at the moment. She’s interested in majoring in a science.

During her time at VASJ, Ewunetie has taken four AP courses, including

AP U.S. History, AP Calculus, AP Government and Politics and AP Biology, as well as numerous Honors classes. Her cumulative GPA is 4.31, and she ranks first out of 107 students in her class.

In addition, during the 2018-19 academic year, Ewunetie spent a semester in Vermont studying at The Mountain School of Milton Academy.

Ewunetie said she would definitely recommend the QuestBridge program to other VASJ students.

“It’s a similar type of application to most others in terms of supplements, transcripts and all of that, but the essays are different. The really nice part is that you find out decisions a lot earlier than with a normal application,” she said.

She added that VASJ has played a major role in helping her to determine which paths she wants to pursue after graduation.

“My time at VASJ has given me the opportunity to really figure out what I want in my future,” Ewunetie said. “I’ve been able to step outside of my comfort zone because my friends have encouraged me to try new things while I’ve been here. Because of that, I wasn’t really stressed about senior year because I figured I had done most things I really wanted to do in high school. All of my teachers and classes have really made a difference in how my high school path has gone, especially in what clubs I’ve ended up joining because of them.”

COVER STORY

hen Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School senior Cha’Nyra Cooper wanted to get more involved in the school’s community, she decided to join the Campus Ministry program. Not only did the Campus Ministry team quickly become her new school family, but it also helped her to grow in her spirituality.

“Being a part of Campus Ministry has allowed me to think about not just a couple of people but a community of people,” Cooper said. “I not only have humility, but I have compassion for all I come by. Campus Ministry has allowed me to better work with my peers and mediators as a team, to work together rather than alone to achieve a goal.”

The VASJ community is united and bonded to one another through Jesus Christ. The school’s Campus Ministry program plays an important role in helping to cultivate that unified spirit among students at the school.

The program was revamped at the start of the 2019-20 academic year with English teacher Brianna Wilson being appointed as director and English teacher Christin VanAtta as assistant director.

“Brianna and Christin bring an amazing amount of passion and energy to the program,” said VASJ principal David Csank. “They have completely embraced the mission of the school and the greater Viking community.”

Wilson previously assisted with the Campus Ministry program at VASJ for three years and said she was excited to take on the program full-time, while VanAtta was involved in campus ministry work during her time at college.

“Having two people tackle such a big responsibility is a blessing,” Wilson said. “We have two heads and two hearts working for the same mission. There are so many people who give selflessly of their time, energy and resources to make Campus Ministry the program that it

is. Christin and I are blessed to be in our new roles.”One of the first changes Wilson and VanAtta made to

the program was creating a dedicated space on campus for students to gather and meet. The old art room on the third floor of the school has been reimagined as “The LOFT,” which stands for Living Our Faith Together.

“Students love having a room that lets them just get together. This room is a new space for our students to learn about faith and begin living it out together,” Wilson said.

“Every time a student walks in they say, “When did this room get built?” VanAtta added. “They don’t realize it’s just the old art room completely revamped with a lot of couches and a rug. The space is definitely fulfilling its purpose. Having it available at all times for meetings, speakers and faith club meetings is an invaluable resource for us.”

In addition, Wilson and VanAtta worked to create a new, focused vision statement for the program, which reads: “All members of the Viking family are part of Campus Ministry at VASJ. We help each other come to know and freely choose God through life-giving experiences of liturgies, retreats, service and community engagement.”

That vision statement will serve as a guiding force for Wilson and VanAtta as they plan programming and service opportunities for VASJ students this year.

“Our goals for the Campus Ministry program this year are to revamp and revitalize the way Campus Ministry exists in our school culture,” VanAtta said. “We want to make Campus Ministry more

relatable and interesting for all students at VASJ while making all students feel welcomed and at home at VASJ.”

Three faith clubs are a specific focus for Campus Ministry, VanAtta said: Peer Ministry, LIFE Club (Living in Faith Experience) and CSPJ Club (Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice).

LIFE Club is a faith sharing group for young people based on the spirituality of William Joseph Chaminade,

Christin VanAtta, left, and Brianna Wilson

founder of the Society of Mary (Marianists). Students are encouraged to build a Christian community through mutual support, prayer, conversation and service projects. For instance, the club held a Welcome Back Night at the beginning of the school year with outdoor activities, and in December, the students enjoyed Christmas cookies and hot cocoa while student LIFE leaders guided their peers through a discussion about God and gratitude.

VASJ students involved with CSPJ collaborate with other high school students in the Diocese of Cleveland to participate in social justice activities. This past fall, VASJ students participated in a Mass and Rally for Life with Bishop Nelson Perez. CSPJ student leaders are also planning for the annual VASJ Lenten Mission Collection.

VanAtta said changes to the Campus Ministry program have been largely welcomed by students.

“For me, the most rewarding part has been seeing kids react to the things we are experimenting with, changing, trying,” she said. “For example, for our All Saints’ Day Mass, we took a risk and dimmed the lights in the gym and lit approximately

400 luminaries in the gym as a visual representation of all the people who were close to us who had passed away. When kids walked into the gym, I heard a lot of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs,’ and I knew we had them hooked!”

For Wilson, the Campus Ministry program is at the core of what makes VASJ unique.

“Our motto here is ‘Faith. Family. Future.’ Campus Ministry has the opportunity to impact all students through retreats, liturgies and service opportunities. Everyone is part of Campus Ministry, and they are able to get involved at the level that is comfortable for them, depending on where they are currently with their faith life,” she said.

“I think the kids are being challenged this year to think about their faith in a very different, very personal way that they may not have encountered before,” VanAtta elaborated. “I think many of them are used to faith being equated with their negative ideas of ‘religion,’ and I think some of the

things we are doing this year are allowing them to consider their faith as a personal experience, which is also very rewarding.”

Both Wilson and VanAtta are eager about

the future of the program and ways to engage students and help them to grow on their faith journeys. They both make it a point to reflect on each experience the program coordinates, whether it be a Mass or a retreat, and they take into account student feedback as well to make future events even more impactful.

“Brianna and I make a strong team, and we are only made stronger by the community here that supports us indefinitely,” VanAtta said. “If we keep God at the center and always ask ourselves what the kids are responding best to, we can’t go wrong.”

“For me, the most rewarding part is accompanying the students,” Wilson added. “It is a humbling experience to simply be present to them, share with them and learn from them. It’s also inspiring to see the different service projects students take on and how enthusiastic they get about how they are living out their faith beyond our school walls.”

“I THINK THE KIDS ARE BEING CHALLENGED THIS YEAR TO THINK ABOUT THEIR FAITH IN A VERY DIFFERENT, VERY PERSONAL WAY THAT THEY

MAY NOT HAVE ENCOUNTERED BEFORE.” CHRISTIN VANATTA

VASJ students attend luncheon with Bishop Perez

A handful of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School students had the opportunity to attend a luncheon on Thursday, Jan. 9 with Bishop Nelson Perez.

The 61st annual bishop’s address was hosted by The First Friday Club of Cleveland at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower. More than 600 people attended the event. Bishop Perez discussed a variety of topics during his address, including new initiatives within the Diocese of Cleveland, his recent trip to Rome and his experience meeting with Pope Francis.

Walk for FreedomChristin VanAtta, assistant

director of Campus Ministry, accompanied a handful of VASJ students who participated in the Walk for Freedom on Oct. 19, 2019, to bring awareness to human trafficking. Participants gathered at St. Ignatius and walked one mile in silence. As our students walked down West 25th Street in Cleveland, they handed out cards to strangers to raise awareness.

T here are numerous ways for donors to support Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School from pledges to matching gifts to endowed funds. One way of giving that’s perhaps not as well-known is an IRA charitable rollover.

Donors who are 70-and-a-half years old can lower the income and taxes from their IRA withdrawals. An IRA charitable rollover is a way to help VASJ and maximize your benefits at the same time this year.

Typically, when individuals take distributions from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), it counts as income for tax purposes. However, an IRA charitable rollover is an exception. People who are at least 70-and-a-half years old can distribute up to $100,000 each year from their IRAs to their favorite 501(c)(3) organization without counting the distribution as income.

Take Leonard Bole, SJ ’65, for example, who recently gave a gift of $5,000 to VASJ through an IRA distribution. Bole credits the religious faculty at St. Joseph High School as helping him to get through high school and his teen years.

“I was given a job during the school year to help me finance my tuition and was employed summers working in the maintenance department,” he said. “One brother suggested I broaden my college horizons and apply to more schools than just the University of Dayton. I took his advice and ended up in Chicago where I got my degrees and, more importantly, met my wife of 52 years.”

Bole said he hopes his recent gift to VASJ via an IRA charitable rollover will help to support students at the school.

“St. Joseph High School had a very positive influence on me and, in some small way, I would like to increase the probability that it can similarly impact as many current and future students as possible,” Bole said.

For more information about how you can support VASJ through your IRA, please contact the Advancement Office at 216-481-8414 ext. 259.

CLASS NOTES

In 2002, Sabrina Johnson ̓03 was a junior in Mr. Janezic’s religion class. Like most high schoolers, being social was par for the course, even during class.

“I was seated up front for talking too much during class!” she said while

laughing. Her new seating arrangement served its purpose; Johnson did pay attention in more ways than one. “The new location of my seat gave me the opportunity to pay very close attention to the docuseries ‘Field Afar,’ an educational program that highlighted several countries and discussed the culture, social ills and injustices happening across the world.”

Johnson vividly remembers the impact watching these videos had on her. “I sat forward in my seat and I watched. I listened. I felt.” The stories shared in “Field Afar” remained with her. Little did she know, the chance of a lifetime would present itself: the opportunity to take part in a cultural immersion trip to El Salvador, San Salvador, with VASJ’s Campus Ministry department. Johnson jumped at the chance to experience a world so far away yet so close to her heart.

While in El Salvador, Johnson recalls seeing first-hand the poor living conditions, poverty, hunger, and impact of civil war and gang violence. She also paid close attention to the individuals she calls “change agents” ̶ those fighting against atrocities and hardships to improve the lives of Salvadorians. The cultural immersion trip never left Johnson.

“El Salvador really opened my eyes and served as one of the very important catalysts in my desire to work with marginalized populations,” she said.

As the years went on, Johnson knew that one day she wanted to work abroad.

“I consider myself a global citizen. I have a responsibility to foster positive change so that the collective has access to its basic social and economic rights,” she said. “Not everyone can help in the same way, but I believe each and every effort makes a difference whether it be on a micro or macro scale.”

Taking this realization to heart, Johnson began reading online forums, threads and websites that discussed how individuals like herself could become part of the global community. One day, after reading through the comments on a YouTube video, she noticed that someone suggested the Peace Corps as an option for those looking to make a difference abroad. Johnson began to research joining the Peace Corps over several months. But then life happened.

“My great-aunt passed away; she was like my grandmother. My mother suffered a stroke,” she said. These events prompted Johnson to set aside her own goals to focus on family.

Once confident in her mother’s recovery, she found herself ready to be the global citizen she knew she was destined to be. She talked to her mother, who urged her to follow her heart. While the encouragement from her mother helped Johnson to move toward taking a big step, nerves still plagued her. She knew she had to turn to a higher power. “I was so nervous, but I asked God for further direction and clarity.” Johnson finally had the guidance she needed and began the application process for the Peace Corps.

The application process for the Peace Corps is lengthy, taking about a year to complete. As part of the process, prospective volunteers are able to name three possible countries in which they would like to serve or allow the organization to decide on placement based on need. Johnson chose the latter and was appointed to fulfill 27 months in Mang’oto,

Tanzania, with the Peace Corps. Though the choice of where she would end up was out of her hands, some might say there was simply

no coincidence that she was placed in Tanzania.

Johnson works as a health sector volunteer, primarily serving individuals living with HIV. She provides education to adults and children on how to prevent disease as well as the importance of balanced meals, getting necessary checkups, reducing stress and handwashing. She

also writes grants to bring in much-needed financial aid to further her efforts. Health care and education are an absolute necessity for the village. “Many of the people here have no working knowledge of how to prevent diseases,” Johnson said. For some common ailments, teaching proper handwashing with soap makes all the difference in preventing the spread of illness.

Much like her journey to El Salvador as a student at VASJ, Johnson has immersed herself in the culture and traditions of Tanzania. “One of the first things I did once I arrived was conduct home visits,” she explained. This

strategy allowed her to introduce herself and get to know her new community. She noticed quickly just how cherished relationships are in Tanzania. Despite limited resources, the people are exceedingly thoughtful and generous. Johnson mentions the numerous “just because” gifts of homemade food, fresh vegetables, handmade crafts and books. “It is a feeling of community and unity here. ‘Tupo Pamoja’ (‘we are together’) is not just a saying; it is truly a way of living.”

The idea of togetherness is especially demonstrated when a member of the village passes away. The entire village attends the funeral ceremony and later comes together in support and celebration, sharing in feast and fellowship. The love, genuine care for others and selflessness of her new neighbors has helped Johnson further come into her own. “The people of Tanzania are truly impacting my growth as well; there is something for all of us to learn from one another,” she said.

The warmth and care for one another in Tanzania helps Johnson to feel connected to her new home while thousands of miles from loved ones in the States. To further help combat homesickness, Johnson uses social media to share photos and stories of her experience as well as text messaging apps and voice messaging to check in. The many photos and videos saved on her phone help during times when it’s especially difficult to be so far away. Even on her worst days, Johnson keeps the purpose of her journey afar close to her heart. She often pauses to redirect her sadness. “I take a second to ask God for help and remember my ‘why’ because I came here to fulfill a purpose.”

Johnson’s journey shows how, at any time, we can be called to serve. Even as a talkative teenager in religion class, Johnson heard her calling and took the opportunity that was presented to make a difference. Throughout her story, Johnson emphasizes the importance of having a relationship with God and asking for guidance in order to do what is right. Her story is also one that highlights the unique opportunity that VASJ students have to grow in their faith and serve their community, even if that community is thousands of miles away from friends and family.

When asked about her plans once her time ends in Tanzania, Johnson said, “Will I return is the question. If it is the Lord’s will, I will become an expat and continue to work in Tanzania.”

For anyone who thinks they’ve missed their chance or may be nervous to take a big step, Johnson has some advice: “It’s never too late to pursue a dream of yours. Talk to God about it, and then follow your dreams because they know the way.”

A n abandoned theater. Devoid of everything except for the teal curtain walls. With

nothing but a few colorful strobe lights and a single projector and screen, this isn’t your traditional image of a movie premiere. However, as out of the box this setting is, it’s the perfect first step for Melanie Mitchell.

Film has always been a passion for the 2018 alumna, who’s currently attending Ithaca College. During her time at VASJ, she often spoke of her ambitions to write screenplays and pursue cinematography, especially directing. She even went so far as to lead the school’s well-received Senior Spotlight series.

Mitchell recently premiered her first film titled “A Seat at the Table,” a story about a woman attending a job interview with a prestigious business only to realize, soon after, that everything is not what it seems. Mitchell pursued the film on her own, starting with creating the concept, acquiring the required equipment, getting her cast and crew, and more.

“Since this was my first film, a lot of the challenges were mental rather than physical,” she said. “I was very nervous if I would be able to direct a whole cast and crew. However, I believe knowing your vision will take you far, even through

uncertainty about how everything will go.”

Behind every good director is an equally good cast and crew, and lucky for Mitchell, she had another Viking by her side. Fellow Class of 2018 alumnus Madison Ledyard-

King has been one of her biggest supporters since the concept for the film emerged, eventually joining the crew as director of photography. In addition to Ledyard-King, Mitchell had immense support from many around her.

Filmmaking isn’t just lights, camera and action. It also takes a great deal of writing. For Mitchell, the process wasn’t so simple. On her own, she had to delve into the realm of screenwriting to bring her visions to the screen.

“I try to write every day, even if it’s not necessarily working on a story,” she said. “Simply getting my thoughts out on paper helps me stay

SPOT LIGH T

in the mindset of writing. It takes a lot of discipline, but it has really helped me to improve over time and not be scared of looking at an empty paper.”

Some of her writing skills emerged at VASJ.

“In high school, I took this awesome Creative Writing class where we did daily writing prompts. I loved this because it allowed me to stay in the flow of creating a short story or idea, which could lead to something greater,” Mitchell said.

In addition to writing, Mitchell hones her craft through a diligent examination of films throughout the ages.

“I study movies and shows beyond the viewer’s perspective, at least way more than I did a year ago. I study the scripts and the people who wrote them, and I look at why the work of art succeeded or didn’t get as far,” she explained.

With her first film being a success, Mitchell is ready to continue working toward bigger goals. And she’s already well on her way. This past July, she worked as a production assistant on the set of the AMC hit show “The Walking Dead,” an opportunity she received by advocating for herself and her work, furthering her goal of making her own seat at the table.

“Short-term, I would love to secure more internships working on television shows and possibly joining as a staff writer. Long-term, I have always wanted to have my own television show. To be more specific, the showrunner and head writer of a more than likely anthology show. This goal is harrowing with so many great shows out there, but deep down, I know great things are meant to be surpassed. It is that concept that keeps me going,” she said.
