COLUSA HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION July 2013 Aki was an “A” student at Colusa High School. He wanted to be a high school math teacher. Racial prejudice ensured that there would be no employment for him in this field. Prior to World War II, a mandatory draft into the military was instituted. Aki was inducted into the United States Army. After Pearl Harbor, all men of Japanese Ancestry were discharged from the service and sent home. The United States Government then decreed that all Japanese had to be interned in Concentration Camps with high barbed wire enclosures guarded with machine gun towers. Aki was sent to one of these camps. Soon America had a great need for people who could speak and understand the Japanese language that would be willing to assist in the war with Japan. Aki volunteered and was again in the United States Army. He was assigned to a unit of 3000 vol- unteers who were sent to Burma and who soon became known as “Merrill’s Marauders”, one of the most famous units in our military history. The mis- sion … fight the Japanese and elimi- nate them so a military road could be built to send war supplies to China. They encountered many problems like walking into a heavy jungle that was deluged by monsoonal rains of 150 or more inches of rain a year. They fought the Japanese in these heavy jungle surroundings filled with disease and rat infested areas. Their only supplies for survival came by air and mules as the terrain was so dense and overgrown. Aki became very necessary to this unit, and was awarded a Battlefield Commission or in other words was made an officer. His unit achieved its goal. However, the casualties were so heavy, that most survivors were in the hospi- tal at the end of the war. A 600,000 man Japanese Army, which had never been defeated in battle, remained active in China near the end of the war. A small delegation of United States high ranking officers were ordered into Nanking, China, to take the surrender of this army. Aki Yoshimura was the official interpreter during that surrender. The airport runway was lined by thousands of Japanese soldiers in full bat- tle array with all of their military equipment to show that they had never been defeated in battle. Aki returned to Colusa after the war and worked with his family at the Vogue Cleaners until he died. He became very active in the Colusa Rotary Club as sec- retary and President. He participated in District Rotary Programs and led several Rotary groups on trips to Japan. He became a National Vice President of the Japanese-American League and was a fabulous master of ceremonies at many events. All in all, Aki Yoshimura was a great talent. Only family and loyalties kept him here in Colusa. He was truly an “Unsung Hero” and a very proud alumnus of Colusa High School. Respectfully Submitted By George T. Every year we contact over 4000 alumni with this newsletterasking for a small donation of $20. We appreciate all the sup-port we get from our alumni and we see a lot of potential inour numbers. If 4000 alumni send $20 we would generate$80,000 a year for our school. So let your small voice be oneof many that will give back to our school. Thank you for yoursupport.

Dear Alumni:Once again I would like to thank you for your generous contributions to

our school! This year we have decided to purchase a new printer for theLibrary with the majority of the funds. The Library is not only a social cen-ter at CHS, but it also houses the largest computer lab on campus. Teachersbring English, Social Science, Science, Math, and Spanish classes into the lab

to complete a variety of assignments. The usage hastaken a toll on our printers, so we have decided topurchase one that can handle the tremendous amountof print tasks that are generated by our students.

The additional funds will be used to replace someof our paperback novels used in conjunction with theEnglish and Social Science classes. We are buyinghardback books because we have found that thepaperbacks haven’t held up well.

Neither of these purchases would be possible without your donations andwe cannot thank you enough for your continued support. Please know thatyou have an enormous impact on the students and staff at Colusa HighSchool.

Sincerely,Jennifer Corriea

Here's a photo of some of the fun that's generated at the VintageReunion Picnic. At this picnic Jack Staple’s cherished 1914 antique auto wason display. We were all quite happy to see at least one antique that was olderthan any of us!

Although we cater mainly to kids who have graduated 50 or more yearsago, everyone is welcome. Come visit us - We meet on the first Saturdayafter Mothers Day - Same park, every year.

My firm was holding a national salesmeeting in Pheonix, AZ, in the lateseventies. Our keynote speaker wasMerlin Olsen, a former member of theL.A. Rams “Fearsom Foursom”, and oflate at that time, colorful announcer ofNFL games as well as a TV actor. Before dinner I approached Merlin andasked if I could pose a question. Hereplied; “Go ahead”. I said we have akid from my hometown that playedfootball at utah State and I wonder if itwas during your time there. He asked;“Really, what’s his name”? I said DougMayberry. He looked down at mefrom his 6’6” frame and said;“Colusa?” I said “That’s right”. Andhe replied; “Big old Doug”. We wenton to discuss a little about Doug andthen about Merlin’s announcing andacting career at the time.A check to cover Merlin’s personalappearance was already mailed to himbut after his dinner speech, and sincewe were a manufacturer of telephoneequipment, we presented him with aspecial business telephone which wascovered in Italian leather. As the din-ner was breaking up I saw Merlin waswalking toward me. As we made eyecontact he put the phone under his rightarm and put the handset to his ear andsaid “Hello Doug”. We both laughedand again shook hands. I was sad tolearn that Merlin passed away thisyear.D.K. Heard, Class of 1949

I appreciated reading the article “Afterthe Bell” because in 1959, I wrote afull-page article for the Arrow entitled“Before the Bell.” My observationsincluded students guarding the drink-

Colusa High School Class of 1963, alongwith 18 spouses and guests, gathered fora 50-year reunion celebration onSaturday night, May 18 at Colusa Golfand Country Club. Though most atten-dees currently live within 100 miles of

Alexia Vargas, my senior trumpetplayer and band president, marched atthe BCS national championship collegefootball game (Notre Dame vs Alabama)in Miami this past January.

Our own "Carnegie Quartet" (ThomasCritchfield, Lupita Ramos, EfrenFuentes, Alexia Vargas) all auditionedfor, and were accepted to the AmericanHonors Performance Series at CarnegieHall in February, and we all spent 5 daysmaking music and playing in snow inCentral Park. Very cool!

In May, eleven students participated inthe California State Solo and Ensemblefestival in Sacramento. In order to qualifyfor this event, musicians must earn a supe-rior rating at a qualifying event. Of theeleven performances, 4 earned silvermedals, 7 earned gold, and two got unani-mous superiors to get a CommandPerformance!

We are very grateful for the past alumnidonations you have given us.   We haveused past funds to purchase music, bandinstruments, and to help pay for trips tosolo festivals, band and choir events, andeven a broadway musical in Sacramento. Thanks to your help, music is thriving inColusa!

Ancient and usually isolated valleyoak trees (Quercus lobata) can befound in the few remaining undis-turbed grassy plains, and in farmers’fields where they were protected, ofCalifornia’s Central Valley. Thesetrees also grow as a riparian (riverside)species at a slightly higher and drierriverbank elevation than thecottonwoods and willowsthat grow directly adjacentto the Sacramento and othervalley rivers. Valley oaks area very stable and long livedtree and very important to both theriparian and valley savannah commu-nities they inhabit. Next to rivers, theyoften grow in groups with the oldertrees’ canopies shading out the valleyfloor and reducing competition fromother plants, providing a nursery foryounger oaks that will eventually takeover.

The Colusa unified staff remindsme of a group of valley oaks. We havemany veteran teachers who retired thisyear and others who are getting closeto the end of their careers, includingyours truly. I see these individuals asthe mature oaks that play a key role inthe success of their community, but arealso preparing the way for new andyounger teachers who will eventuallyreplace them. I’d like to introduce oneof these new teachers; AmandaSpencer, who taught freshmen science, chemistry and physics this year atColusa High. Amanda grew up inLancaster, CA and earned a degree inbiochemistry at Chico State univer-sity. She hit the ground running thisyear and offered almost daily “handson” labs and demonstrations in all herclasses, while also coaching girls’ soc-cer and boys’ tennis as well as being ateacher in the Environmental Sciences

Academy and attending the JSHSyoung science scholars symposiumwith three students, Yosemite Institutefield trip with a group of ESA seniorsand the Angel Island field trip with agroup of academy juniors. Ms. Spencerteaches science the way I believe isbest, by providing interesting hands on

lessons while covering thestandards; soon to be commoncore. Like the young oaks, shewill grow and thrive, takingher place in the educationalcommunity, and is deserving

of all the help I/we can give her. With Amanda and the future of sci-

ence at Colusa High School in mind,I’d like to both thank the alumni foryour generous contributions to theCHS Biology Program last year andask you to consider a donation this yearthat will be shared by all science class-es taught by Amanda and me. Betweenthe Environmental Science Academygrant and alumni donations, all scienceactivities were funded last school yearand we have even acquired a donatedlaminar hood for microbiology andhave also purchased a PCR (poly-merase chain reaction) DNA duplicat-ing machine to expand our biotecheducation. Ms. Spencer has someexciting plans for her classes, includinga new freshman geosciences course, and any donations will be applied tothese activities as well as the existingprogram.

Please consider making a donationto Colusa High Science.

Fourth Annual 3F Century Bike RideOn May 4, 2013, the Colusa Lions Club hosted the annual 3F Century bike ride. With the retirement of Principal Dave

McGrath (founder and chief organizer of the annual event), the Lions accepted responsibility to maintain this growing tradition.3F, which stands for Flat, Fast and Fun, gave riders a choice of riding 100 miles, 63 miles, 37 miles

or 22 miles courses throughout Colusa and Sutter counties. We had 190 registered riders this year, whichtripled last year's high of 63 riders.

Once again, School Board member and 1972 CHS grad Terry Bressler provided a delicious pulledpork, rice and salad lunch at the end of the ride. Retired Principal McGrath also returned to provide invalu-able assistance.

The date for next year's event is Saturday, May 3, 2014. You can learn more about the ride by visiting www.3Fcentury.com.Proceeds from the event continue to support CuSD projects at all district schools.

Dear Alumni:Moving to a new school and community is always interesting.  Making the leap from Colorado to California has been a whirlwind of

learning and new experiences for me and my family. I have a six-year-old son, Alden, who just finished his Kindergarten year in Colusaschools. My wife, Nicole, is the principal of Orland high school. To say this year was busy would be an understatement. But we have grownto love California, and particularly Colusa.

I have been in small rural districts for my entire career. As I reflect upon my twenty years of experience, I see many similaritiesbetween Colusa and other places I have served. Small towns are full of friends and neighbors who know one another and can be counted onto lend a hand when help is needed. It has been wonderful to see how the parents and community members help out here.  The high schoolhas a new landscape design and is getting an LED marquee sign to advertise events–all from donated funds! Volunteers help us do every-thing from classroom reading instruction, to fundraising, to grounds maintenance. Colusa is a small town full of people with big hearts whocare deeply for their schools.

We are making some changes in Colusa Schools. Looking to the future, we must expect more from our students, and do more to pre-pare them for a world much different than the one in which we grew up. In some regards we are simply re-emphasizing what used to be themission of schools–teaching students the power of critical and creative thinking. Our main focus remains the same; a safe and student cen-tered school where expectations are high.

As a Colusa Alumni, you have made a tremendous impact on our programs. Alumni donations helped fund materials and supplies foracademic and athletics. You helped current students generate memories like the ones so fondly related in the newsletter.

On behalf of myself, the staff, the Board, and our community, I would like to thank you for your generosity. I would also encourageyou to continue helping make Colusa High School a place graduates will remember for the academics, and for the experiences that a caringsmall town has to offer its students. Thanks Again,

Dwayne Newman, District SuperintendentDear Alumni,

In my first year as principal of Colusa High School, there were many pleasant surprises along the way. One such surprise was the enor-mous positive impact the Colusa Alumni Association continues to have on instruction and students at the high school. This year we beganto take photos of materials purchased through the generosity of the association and posting them on our new Colusa High School Facebookpage. We posted pictures of kids in our shop classes with equipment purchased this year and will continue to advertise and inform the AlumniAssociation where exactly the donations are going this year and just how appreciative we all are for your efforts.

I encourage all of you to follow CHS on our Facebook page as we will continue to update everyone where exactly your contributionsare going and how the students are benefiting from the donations. Simply log into your own Facebook accounts and search “Colusa HighSchool.” When you see the Redhawk icon, click on it and like our page so you are updated regularly on all school events.

On behalf of the entire school, I want to thank you for continuing to care so much for our kids and programs. We are so grateful foryour passion to Colusa High School. Sincerely,

Darren Brown, Colusa High School Principal

Dear Colusa HS Alumni Association; On behalf of the Colusa HS Athletic Department I’d like to thank all of you foryour generous donations. Some of the highlights included playoff appearances for football, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, and softball. In the Fall our Cross Countryteam had competitors make it all the way to the State Championships. Our JVGirls basketball team earned a league championship this year as did VarsityBaseball and Softball. Our Varsity Baseball team set a school record for wins at26 and also captured the first Northern Section championship in baseball since1997, downing Winters HS for the Div. 3 crown.
