Call to Order
Kim Coffman called the meeting to order.
1. Approval of the January 21, 2014 CASSC Minutes
The minutes of the January 21, 2014 CASSC Meeting were approved as submitted.
2. Comments by the Provost Academic & Student Affairs
Professional Development Day
On Friday, March 7, 2014, the professional and development day for academic and student affairs
personnel will be held at the Kendall Campus – “Strengthening our Roots: Enhancing Quality,
Opportunity and Success.” The focus is on the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), which will be
submitted in early September of this year. The event is composed of six different themes:
Theme 1: Opportunity and Success
Theme 2: Supporting Student Plan and Progression
Theme 3: Challenging and Empowering Students
Theme 4: A Culture of Inquiry and Evidence
Theme 5: Educational Excellence
Theme 6: Quality Enhancement Plan
Professor Ece Karayalcin, QEP committee chair, has been making the rounds at the various campuses,
and will provide more information on the progress of the QEP on that day. Dr. Richard Prentiss,
Director of QEP, will oversee the remainder of the planning process and implementation.
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
The Compliance Certification report is being finalized and will be sent out to the site visit committee
members within the next few weeks.
Miami International Film Festival (MIFF)
The 31st edition of the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) will be from Friday, March 7, 2014 to
Sunday, March 16, 2014.
Legislative Matters
Local Referendum Bill
The bill is making its rounds through committees of both the House and the Senate to meet the
deadline and be heard early in the legislative session.
K-12 Bill
Prior to graduation, high school students are required to complete Algebra I and must meet certain
criteria on their end-of-course (EOC) assessment.
Establishment of Collegiate High School Senior Year
Institutions will be required to allow dual enrollment students to complete one year toward an industry
certification or an associate’s degree during their senior year.

Alicia Giovinazzo introduced Teddie Laing who presented the request to delete the A.S. in Court
Reporting Technology program. The program has been offered at the College for a number of years, but
recently enrollment has declined. After extensive discussion the item was tabled due to additional
information requested.

4. School of Education
Carol Tulikangas introduced Susan Neimand who presented the request to add a new course EME2XXX
Educating Young Children for Digital Literacy in the 21st Century. Susan Neimand introduced Iris
Strachan, Chair, Early Childhood Education and Professor Christina Muelle. Professor Muelle provided
more information on the course. This course is to teach students how to use technology in
developmentally appropriate ways with young children. Course may be taken as an elective in any of
the associate programs, used as recertification for the Florida Child Care Professional Credential
(FCCPC) or to receive 18 hours to become a child care worker.

Course Description: This course provides an overview of technology and interactive media in early
childhood. The student will learn ways in which to optimize opportunities for young children's

ways that are grounded in principles of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate
practices. The students will learn how to make informed decisions regarding the intentional use of
technology and media in ways that support children's learning and development. (3 hr. lecture).
Recommended Preparation: Departmental permission.
Curriculum Action Rationale: New course for early childhood educators in technology for young
children; can be used for FCCPC renewal or FLDOE teaching certificate renewal.
Proposed Fee: $25.00
Rationale/Justification: To purchase technology (Smart Board and 5 Ipads/tablets) and library
subscriptions.

Susan Neimand also presented the request to modify the Early Childhood Education program. The first
request is to remove EEC2407 Facilitating Social Development from major course electives (area 9),
and add it to the major course requirements (area 8). The second request is to add the new course
EME2XXX Educating Young Children for Digital Literacy in the 21st Century in the major course
electives (area 9).

Informational Items
5. Student Achievement Initiatives (SAI) Updates –
Kim Coffman introduced Joaquin Martinez, Associate Provost, Student Achievement Initiatives (SAI),
who introduced himself, and expressed his excitement to be working with everyone at the College in his
new position. He announced visits to all the campuses to provide an overview of the accomplishments
and future direction of SAI. So far, three campuses have been visited, North and Homestead, and
Hialeah via video stream.
6. Announcements –
Community Health Fair
Kim McGinnis invited College CASSC members to the Community Health Fair hosted by the Medical
Campus on Saturday, February 22, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Spring Fling Carnival
Vicky Owles invited College CASSC members to attend the annual Spring Fling Carnival at the Kendall
Campus on Saturday, March 1, 2014. Admission is $1.00 per person. All proceeds will be donated to
the United Way.
Health and Safety Children Fair
Lourdes Perez invited College CASSC members to attend the annual Health and Safety Children Fair at
InterAmerican Campus on Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
New World School of the Arts (NWSA)
Professor James Randolph invited College CASSC members to attend the production of “Into the
Woods” at the Miami Beach Colony Theater. Shows are scheduled on the following dates:

March and April College CASSC Meetings
Lenore Rodicio announced that while she is on maternity leave, Beverly Moore-Garcia, Associate
Provost, Academic Affair, will represent her at the March and April College CASSC meetings.
Charles Darwin’s Birthday
Professor Curtis McKinney who will be attending the meetings on behalf Professor Joe Okungbowa,
invited College CASSC members to celebrate Darwin’s birthday on Wednesday, February 12, in the
Science Building at the North Campus.
Next College CASSC Meeting
Kim Coffman reminded the council members that the next College CASSC meeting will be on March
11, 2014, 1:30 p.m., Room 2106 at the Wolfson Campus.

College CASSC Agenda
Kim Coffman announced that the College CASSC agenda format will be changing. These changes will
facilitate the process of reviewing, understanding and voting of curriculum items. These changes will be
reflected on the March agenda.
