Ourmissionistoeducateplanningpractitioners.WedrawonourlocationinthePacificNorthwestaswellasourknowledgeofandexperiencewithpracticeinotherregionsofthecountryandtheworld.Ourgraduatesarereflectivepractitionerscommittedtofosteringhealthycommunitiesthatareculturallydiverse,sociallyjust,prosperous,andsustainable.

PROGRAMSTRUCTURE

OVERVIEW

TheMURPprogramprovidespreparationforprofessionalplanningpractice.Graduatesoftheprogramwillacquireskillsandknowledgeneededforgainingemploymentinpublicagencies,nonprofits,andprivatefirmsinvolvedintheurbandevelopmentprocess.ThisprogramisfullyaccreditedbythePlanningAccreditationBoardandisstructuredasfollows:

USP558:PlanningWorkshopisthecapstonecoursefortheMURPprogram.MURPstudentsworkinteamsoffourtosixtoidentifyaplanningthemethatintereststhem,aclientforaplanningprojectthataddressesthetheme,andthentheproductionofaprofessionalplanningproducttomeettheclient’sneeds.ExamplesofpastPlanningWorkshopproductscanbefoundontheTSUSPWebsiteat:

Aplanningprojectmustincorporatetheelementsoftheplanningprocess,particularlydirectinteractionandcontactwithaffectedcitizens.Further,theToulanSchoolexpectsthatPlanningWorkshopprojectswilladdressimportantregionalissuesandwillhelptolesseninequitiesbyutilizingplanningtobetterarticulatetheneedsandaspirationsofallcommunities,particularlythosehistoricallyunder‐representedinpublicpolicydebates.

StudentsWILLNOTbepermittedtotakeUSP558untiltheyhavecompletedallMURPcorecourses(exceptUSP559).ThecoursetakesplaceovertheWinterandSpringtermsofthesecondyearandinvolvesasignificanttimecommitment.Pleaseplanaccordingly.

AllstudentseligibletoenrollinPlanningWorkshopinWinterareurgedtoparticipateinaProjectManagementcourseofferedthepreviousFall.Thiscoursecanbetakenforcredit,but

INTERNSHIP

EverystudentseekingtheMURPdegreemustcomplete400hoursofinternshippriortoorwithinonetermofgraduating.Youmayobtainthesehoursatoneormoreapprovedplacements.Theinternshiprequirementwascreatedtoincorporatehands‐onexperienceswithpracticeintheMURPprogram.Webelievethatthisisimportantforenablingstudentstogainimportantinsightsintothefield,linktheoryandpracticeearlyintheircareers,buildprofessionalnetworks,establishpractice‐basedcredentialstoofferfutureemployers,andbetterarticulatetheirowncareergoals.USP559:InternshipSeminarwascreatedasameansforsharinginternshipexperiences,promotingengagementinreflectivepractice,andtappingthecombinedknowledgeandreachoftheentiregroupofactiveMURPstudentstohelpallstudentsseekandsecuretheinternshipsthatbestenablethemtodevelopasprofessionals.Internshipscanbepaidorunpaid,butmustincorporatedirectexperiencewithprofessionalplanningpractice,broadlyinterpreted.Inmostcases,workasaGraduateResearchAssistantwillnotbeeligibleformeetingthisrequirement.StudentswithquestionsaboutproposedinternshipplacementsandsatisfyingtheinternshiprequirementshouldcontactAndreeTremoulet,InternshipCoordinator,priortoengagingintheinternship.Tomeettheinternshiprequirement,MURPcandidatesmust:1)Attendandactivelyparticipateinmandatoryseminarmeetings,oneineachofthefirstsixquartersthatyouareintheMURPprogram,whetherformallyregisteredfortheinternshipseminarornot.Theinternshipseminarmeetingschedulewillbedistributedviaemail.

3. Select,withtheadviceofthechairperson,oneadditionalfacultymembertocompletethecommittee.

Thefinalproductneednotbelimitedtoawrittentext.Avideo,alongwithascriptandnotes,forexample,maybeappropriate.Itshouldbeofpublishablequality,containingaproblemdefinition,analysis,andadiscussionofresultsandofthesignificanceoftheresultsforvariousaudiences.Theprojectisexpectedtoinvolveoriginalresearch,orresultinthedevelopmentofanoriginalidea.

ADVISING

FACULTYADVISEROnceadmitted,studentsareassignedafacultyadviser.Theroleofthefacultyadviseristohelpthestudentunderstandthefieldofurbanandregionalplanning,thinkthroughvariousconcentrationoptions,andselectcoursesthathelpthestudentgaintheskillsandknowledgetopursuetheirdesiredcareerpath.Incomingstudentsarestronglyurgedtointroducethemselvestotheirassignedadviseranddiscussprogramrequirements,concentrationoptions,andsetoutatentativecourseofstudyatthebeginningoftheirfallterm.Studentsareresponsibleforensuringtheyhaveproperadvising.Youshouldmakeadvisingappointmentsandcontactyouradviserwhenyouhavequestions.Itisrecommendedthatyoumeetwithyouradviseronceaquartertodiscussprogressandtoupdate/reviseyourcourseofstudy.

Waiversaregivenatthediscretionofthefacultymemberteachingthecourseforwhichthewaiverissought.Youdoneedtoproveyourcaseforthewaiver.Studentsareadvisedtowriteanotetothefacultymemberexplainingtherequestforthewaiver;thewaiverrequestshouldbeaccompaniedbyevidence(i.e.,syllabi,assignments,andgradedoutcomes)forreviewbythefacultymember.Ifawaiverhasbeengranted,thestudentshouldforwardtheapproval(e.g.,approvalemailfromfacultymember)totheOfficeCoordinatorandMURPExecutiveCommitteechair,andsubmitanupdatedDegreePlanningform.

Notethatincaseofanapprovedcoursewaiver,thestudentdoesnotgettoclaimthecreditsassociatedwiththewaivedcourse:theequivalentnumberofcreditsmustbeearnedbytakingothercourses.

Arequesttotransfercreditsisdifferentfromarequesttorecognizeacourseforwaiver.AtransfercreditreflectsacoursethatyoutookpriortoenrollmentintheMURP,butwasNOTutilizedforanotherdegree.

Amaximumof24transfercreditsmayberequestedtobecountedtowardyourMURPdegree.Tobeeligible,transferablecreditsmustbegraduatelevelcoursesinwhichyouearnedagradeof"B"orhigher.Transfercreditswillbegrantedonlyforcoursesthatreadilyfitintoastudent'sprogram.Preliminaryacceptabilityoftransfercreditaspartofastudent'sprogramisdeterminedbythestudent'sadviser,thechairoftheMURPExecutiveCommittee,andtheSchool’sDirector.

MURPstudentsplayanimportantroleinthegovernanceoftheToulanSchoolofUrbanStudiesandPlanninginconjunctionwithUniversitypolicies.AllmattersofgraduatestudyaresubjecttoUniversity‐widepoliciesandproceduresestablishedbytheFacultySenateuponrecommendationoftheGraduateCouncil.TheViceProvostforGraduateStudiesisresponsibleforconductingtheaffairsoftheOfficeofGraduateStudiesandforcertifyingtotheRegistrarcandidateswhohavefulfilledtherequirementsfortheMURPdegree.TheToulanSchoolDirectorcoordinatestheprograms,andtheDeanoftheCollegeofUrbanandPublicAffairshasultimateauthorityoveradministration.ThefacultyoftheSchoolisresponsibleforcurriculaandspecialdegreerequirements.

E:INTERNSHIP:MANDATORYINTERNSHIPSEMINARS

EverystudentseekingtheMURPdegreemustcomplete400hoursofinternshippriortoorwithinonetermofgraduating.Youmayobtainthesehoursatoneormoreapprovedplacements.Theinternshiprequirementwascreatedtoincorporatehands‐onexperienceswithpracticeintheMURPprogram.Webelievethatthisisimportantforenablingstudentstogainimportantinsightsintothefield,linktheoryandpracticeearlyintheircareers,buildprofessionalnetworks,establishpractice‐basedcredentialstoofferfutureemployers,andbetterarticulatetheirowncareergoals.USP559:InternshipSeminarwascreatedasameansforsharinginternshipexperiences,promotingengagementinreflectivepractice,andtappingthecombinedknowledgeandreachoftheentiregroupofactiveMURPstudentstohelpallstudentsseekandsecuretheinternshipsthatbestenablethemtodevelopasprofessionals.Internshipscanbepaidorunpaid,butmustincorporatedirectexperiencewithprofessionalplanningpractice,broadlyinterpreted.Inmostcases,workasaGraduateResearchAssistantwillnotbeeligibleformeetingthisrequirement.StudentswithquestionsaboutproposedinternshipplacementsandsatisfyingtheinternshiprequirementshouldcontactAndreeTremoulet,InternshipCoordinator,priortoengagingintheinternship.Tomeettheinternshiprequirement,MURPcandidatesmust:1)Attendandactivelyparticipateinmandatoryseminarmeetings,oneineachofthefirstsixquartersthatyouareintheMURPprogram,whetherformallyregisteredfortheinternshipseminarornot.ForAcademicYear2014‐2015,theInternshipSeminarschedulewillbe:Friday,October3,2014
