Planning is a dynamic profession that helps communities create sustainable, attractive,

healthful, ef cient, and supportive places for present and future generations to inhabit and

enjoy. Planners serve in a variety of roles that positively impact the physical, environmental,

social, and economic vitality of the communities in which they are working. Among the

functional areas in which planners focus their professional skills are land use, economic

development, transportation, housing, human services, and various aspects of the

physical and natural environment. Today’s professional planners are adaptive, engaged,

and collaborative—using knowledge and skills that are developed in UNL’s Master of

Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) program.

UNL’s MCRP program is the only planning degree program in Nebraska. Nationally

accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board, the program has a respected tradition of

educating and graduating students who can facilitate positive change in the communities

in which they are working. Students in the MCRP program re ect the diversity of the eld

of planning, entering the program at various points in their academic and personal lives

with diverse academic backgrounds and professional experiences. The MCRP program

includes required core courses, as well as suf cient elective credit hours to enable

students to develop specialized skills and interests within the eld of planning.

Completion Track

The completion track in the MCRP degree program consists of two components: (1) one of three culminating educational experiences – a master’s thesis, a professional project, or a written comprehensive examination – and (2) elective course work. Each student consults with a faculty advisor in the Community and Regional Planning Program to select elective courses within and outside the program that will help the student achieve his or her academic and professional goals. Students are encouraged, but not required, to select at least nine credit hours of course work in the area of concentration defined in the consultation with their faculty advisors.

a. Master’s thesis and oral examination: CRPL 899 Master’s Thesis 6 credit hours Elective Courses 18 credit hours Total 24 credit hours

b. Professional project and oral examination: CRPL 898 Professional Project 6 credit hours Elective Courses 18 credit hours Total 24 credit hours

c. Comprehensive written and oral examination:

Comprehensive Written Exam 0 credit hours Elective Courses 24 credit hours Total 24 credit hours

Students selecting the comprehensive written and oral examination are required to successfully complete an examination that tests knowledge and skills gained from the Program. The comprehensive examination is scheduled and administered by the Program no more than once in each fall and spring semester. Students who fail the comprehensive examination may attempt the examination once more, normally within one year. A second fail, however, disqualifies the student from continuing to pursue the MCRP degree.

cont. Completion Track

The MCRP degree program can be completed by pursuing one of the three possible tracks, described as a, b, and c below. Students are expected to have decided on one of the three completion tracks by the time they file the “Memorandum of Courses” with the UNL Office of Graduate Studies. The Memorandum must be submitted before the student receives grades for more than one-half of the credit hours that are to be included in the degree program.

Typical Course Sequence

The recommended overall sequence of core courses and electives for full-time study in the two-year 48-credit hour MCRP degree programis as follows:
