Collection Proposal – Heavy Metal Resources

This report will propose a plan to add new materials to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

and Museum‘s Library and Archives collection. Specifically, the materials to be added will

cover the genre of music known as Heavy Metal.

DESCRIPTION – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum‘s Library and Archives1

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum‘s Library and Archives will be the world‘s

most comprehensive repository of written and audiovisual materials relating to the

history of rock and roll. The Library and Archives will collect, preserve, and provide

access to these resources in order to educate people about rock and roll, its roots, and its

    impact on society.

COLLECTIONS – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum‘s Library and Archives2

The Library and Archives will house thousands of books and dissertations, hundreds of

periodical titles, thousands of sound and video recordings, and thousands of boxes of

archival materials (including personal papers, correspondence, photographs, song

manuscripts, business records, contracts, press kits, posters, flyers, concert programs, and

clippings). The collections will focus on rock and roll, its precursors (including blues,

R&B, gospel, and country), and related music genres (including soul, hip hop, and

reggae). It will also spotlight subjects such as the music business and popular music

    criticism.

LOCATION – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum‘s Library and Archives3

Construction of the Library and Archives‘ new 22,500-square-foot facility is now

complete. The Library and Archives is located on the Metropolitan Campus of Cuyahoga

Community College near downtown Cleveland. It is approximately two miles southeast

of the Museum. The facility will have two primary areas. The first is the library, a public

resource that will house a plethora of books, periodicals and audio and video recordings

in many formats that anyone can use. The second is the archives, which will house a

permanent collection of papers, photographs, recordings, vintage posters, handbills and

tickets, and other rock and roll ephemera. Access to the ‖white glove material‖ will be

more tightly controlled for preservation and security reasons. The Library and Archives

will open its doors in May 2011.

    Proposal Narrative

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame located in Cleveland, Ohio is set to open its own Library

and Archives in 2011. This is a special library that focuses on materials relating to genres of

music and the performers of that music. The purpose of the Library and Archives is to provide

resources that can be used by scholars, students, historians and even the general public.

For Dr. Laura Onkey, rock hall vice president of education, it is cause for considerable

excitement. … Onkey said, the library and archives can be a boon not just for area

colleges and universities, but also for the city.

‗The key thing is, it will draw scholars and researchers in the field of rock and roll to

Cleveland, and that will also enhance what we can do at the university level,‘ she said.‘

We get regular phone calls and e-mails especially during the school year from students. . .

. Contact with scholars and journalists is ongoing. They‘re in touch with us about where

people‘s papers are, and do we have info on how to get resources. Those conversations

go on all the time and the people involved in these projects see us as conceptually the

place to come for that information, and now we can offer it in a major way.‘

Over the years, rock and roll and popular music in general have become an important part

of American culture, not only reflecting the tenor of the times but often providing the

soundtrack to movements advocating social change. This is one reason the academic

study of rock and pop music has been growing, Onkey said.

Separately, the major metro area colleges have been ramping up their popular music

    study and music industry offerings.

Ideally, the schools and the rock hall will be able to use the library and archives as a

resource and conduit for collaborations that benefit everyone.8

The Library and Archives contains materials that cover many different genres of music.

However one genre that is underrepresented is that of Heavy Metal.

Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in

the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States.

With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal

developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended

guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance

styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.

    Stylistic origins: Blues-rock, psychedelic rock.

Cultural origins: Late 1960s, United Kingdom and United States.

Typical instruments: Electric guitar • bass guitar • drums • vocals • keyboards.

    Mainstream popularity: Worldwide, late 1960s–present.

Subgenres: Black metal • classic metal • death metal • doom metal • glam metal • gothic

metal • groove metal • power metal • speed metal • stoner rock • thrash metal.

Fusion genres: Alternative metal • avant-garde metal • Christian metal • crust punk •

drone metal • folk metal • funk metal • grindcore • industrial metal • metalcore • neo-

    classical metal • nu metal • post-metal • progressive metal • rap metal • sludge metal •

    symphonic metal • Viking metal.9

The proposed materials will include print books, DVD videos, online databases, and magazine

subscriptions. All print books and DVDs will be reference only and non-circulating due to the

nature of the library being primarily an archival institution. As evidenced by this list, there are

many resources and materials available that deal with this topic. I believe it fits with the mission

of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum‘s Library and Archives to acquire these

resources for the benefit of its diverse user demographic.

    Description:

Fueled to the max by bubblegum power chords, skyscraper backcombed hairdos, eyeliner, and

spandex, artists such as Quiet Riot, Ratt, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Dokken, Guns N' Roses,

Warrant, Slaughter, L.A. Guns, Great White, W.A.S.P., and Bon Jovi reigned supreme in the

1980s. Established bands too fully embraced the "image is everything" culture and Kiss,

Aerosmith, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, Whitesnake, and Heart all enjoyed renewed flushes of

success. This book chronicles every cheap thrill and maps out every mascara-caked moment.

Each and every band, whether able to pack out Wembley or Wigan, is documented with full

    biographies and global discographies.

    Description:

Throughout the history of Rock no other genre has pushed the boundaries of aural extremity and

social rebellion quite like Black Metal. Many of the bands in this book operate way beyond the

parameters of the established rock scene, carving their own path in the darkest depths of true

underground music. For the first time this ultimate authority documents detailed biographies, line

ups, and full discographies with track listings of over 2,000 bands. Included are in depth details

of the major artist such as Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor Mayhem, Immortal, and

Marduk as well as every other band, however small, or distant geographically. Each strain of

musical brutality is examined in detail including the Black ambient scene, Viking Metal,

Grindcore, Noisecore, and even the ultimate irony of Christian Black Metal. Despite its

unceasing growth and increasing legions of fans, the phenomenon of Extreme Metal has never

    been fully documented until now.

    Description:

Reviled and revered in equal measure since its inception over a decade ago, Death Metal and its

bastard offspring Grindcore have pushed hard rock to the very edge of acceptability—and far

beyond. But despite its unceasing growth and increasing legions of fans around the globe, the

phenomenon has never been fully documented until now. This encyclopedia-style book includes

full histories and detailed discographies of over 2,000 bands—from the founding fathers Napalm

Death, Carcass, Incantation, Impetigo, and Morbid Angel, to the rise of Swedish Death Metal

legends In Flames, Carnage, and At The Gates, the Black Death Metal of Marduk, the Christian

Death Metal of Mortification, and the political Noisecore of Agathocles.

Power Metal is Heavy Metal taken to the absolute limit. When the major Metal institutions

    Description:

The definition of 'heavy metal' is often a contentious issue and in this lively and accessible text

Andrew Cope presents a refreshing re-evaluation of the rules that define heavy metal as a

    musical genre.

    Review:

Popular Musicology Online, 3 September 2010

Reviewer: Keith Kahn-Harris, Birkbeck College, University of London

Sheila Whiteley begins her foreword to this book with the enthusiastic comment ―At last! A

book about heavy metal as music‖ (p. xi). It‘s certainly true that, although the field of ‗Metal

Studies‘ has grown considerably in recent years, heavy metal has not attracted the attention it

deserves from musicologists. Metal and its sub-genres still require systematic musicological

description, not least to assist metal researchers who are not themselves musicologists but wish

to engage with the sounds of the music – such as myself – in order to sonically anchor

sociological studies of metal scenes. The strongest section of this book is chapter two, in which

Cope‘s close analysis of Led Zeppelin‘s and Black Sabbath‘s musical syntax clearly establishes

the key differences between the bands. Both bands were rooted in electric blues, but whereas Led

Zeppelin extended the vocabulary of blues and folk music, Black Sabbath innovated more

dramatically, creating a musical style based on sequences of power chords, down-tuned guitars,

the abundant use of flattened 2nds and tritones, modal contours and episodic structuring.

Analysis: An introduction to Black Sabbath, the band that spawned Heavy Metal as a genre.

This book could help readers trace Metal‘s roots and fills a niche within the overall proposed

    collection.

    Review:

    BookList, 11/15/2004

    Reviewer: Mike Tribby

Mudrian details two of the more esoteric subgenres of heavy metal in appropriate fashion, that is,

with photos of the bands, but not definitions of and distinctions between, say, death metal and

black metal, abounding. By and large, Mudrian treats grindcore and death metal as interrelated

approaches to the verbally gloomy, power-chording world of heavy metal that are leavened by a

stiff dose of the punk do-it-yourself ethos and created by musicians who "grew up on traditional

heavy metal, thrash and speed metal, punk, industrial and hardcore." Taxonomic considerations

aside, Mudrian provides conversational histories of such bands as Cannibal Corpse, Darkthrone,

and Sepultra and highlights of interviews with leading subgenre movers and shakers. Altogether,

the book is similar to the three Decline of Western Civilization documentaries of outsider music,

minus those films' endearing footage of substance abuse and other suicidal behaviors. An

excellent shelf mate to Moynihan and Soderlind's Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the

Satanic Metal Underground (1998)--not as scary for fans' parents but just as insightful and

    comprehensive.

    Product Description

Damage Incorporated: Metallica and the Production of Musical Identity offers an

interdisciplinary study investigating a range of topics that intersect in the music and cultural

influence of Metallica. As part of a collection of heavy metal bands -- among them Slayer,

Anthrax, and Megadeth -- grouped together under the rubric "speed metal," Metallica's music

presents a number of avenues for investigation. Specifically, Damage Incorporated focuses on

identity in popular music as a set of performing conventions, with Metallica's place within

certain conventions of genre, race, and gender serving as a constant impetus. The book also

engages broadly with larger questions of the politics of culture, American history, musical

analysis, and the character of musical discourses in the context of commerce. An essential book

for students of popular culture, mass media, and music, Damage Incorporated sets a new

standard for the study and exploration of issues of class, gender, and race in popular music.

the Black Death Metal of Marduk, the Christian Death Metal of Mortification and the political

    Description:

Extreme metal--one step beyond heavy metal--can appear bizarre or terrifying to the uninitiated.

Musicians of this genre have developed an often impenetrable sound that teeters on the edge of

screaming, incomprehensible noise. Extreme metal circulates on the edge of mainstream culture

within the confines of an obscure 'scene', in which members explore dangerous themes such as

death, war and the occult, sometimes embracing violence, neo-fascism and Satanism. In the first

book-length study of extreme metal, Keith Kahn-Harris draws on first-hand research to explore

the global extreme metal scene. He shows how the scene is a space in which members creatively

explore destructive themes, but also a space in which members experience the everyday

pleasures of community and friendship. Including interviews with band members and fans, from

This is one of the few books that provides a serious study of this most loud and rebellious form

    About.com Guide

    Reviewer: Chad Bowar

The 2007 documentary Heavy Metal In Baghdad told the story of Acrassicauda, the Iraqi heavy

metal band. It was a fascinating look at metal in the Middle East, politics, war and the band

members themselves. Acrassicauda left Iraq and became refugees, before finally being reunited

in the U.S. The book Heavy Metal In Baghdad: The Story Of Acrassicauda is able to go into

much more detail than the movie, and it updates what has happened with the band since the

documentary's release. Band members past and present are interviewed, and their backgrounds

and stories are delved into on a deeper level, which sheds additional light on the band's story. In

addition to the story of the band, Heavy Metal In Baghdad: The Story Of Acrassicauda also has a

full transcription of the documentary. No matter what happens in their musical career from this

point forward, Acrassicauda's story is an important one. Their struggles have impacted and

influenced many people, both metal and non-metal fans alike.

Analysis: The book functions as a companion piece to the DVD also included in this proposal.

It will expand on some of the issues explored in the movie and is also notable for containing a

full transcript of the documentary movie.

Two chapters stand out as valuable contributions. Iain Campbell brings to bear an original

perspective and genuine expertise in another field in his study of heavy metal's uses of the

classical world, real, mythic, and imagined. He deals only with lyrics, but his work is

illuminating and generative. And Ryan M. Moore analyzes parallels between the social crises of

the 1970s and 1980s, the period of deindustrialization within which heavy metal flourished, and

the millennial cults and radical social movements of the Industrial Revolution itself. Unusually

well read, Moore impressively fleshes out both historical contexts and delineates three forms of

reification they have in common: "the representation of power as demonic or supernatural; the

displacement of power into ancient mythology and history; and the fetishism of commodities and

there, black metal is a refinement of heavy metal, the genre minions of decency loved to hate

before the rise of gangsta rap. Combining the lyrical stance of death metal with the melodic

stylings of thrash, black metal takes its name from the English band Venom's second album. But

what distinguishes black metal from, say, Marilyn Manson, is that the Nordic tunesmiths aren't

kidding. The ones cited here openly advocate and occasionally admit to suicide, murder, and

church burnings. Satan worship and its trappings are important to the black metal ethos, yet

many musicians and fans aren't Satan worshippers but Odin devotees, and some seek to revive

notorious Norwegian Nazi puppet Vidkun Quisling's Universism. Though the prose is stiff in

places and the presentation desultory at times, this is gripping stuff, a book about scary rock that

    is really scary.

Analysis: A source that deals with another specific sub-genre, in this case Black Metal.

Metal: The Definitive Guide is nearly 500 pages of information on some of the biggest and most

influential artists in metal. Sharpe-Young breaks the book down into chapters based on the

band's genre or geographic location. For example there are chapters on doom metal and power

metal, but also on American thrash metal and UK thrash metal. The profiles of the bands are

very interesting, in depth and well written. There's even a discography for each band. Many

profiles have sidebar quotes from band members, which adds even more. There are also photos

of many of the bands included in the book. This book has something to offer for all levels of

metal fans. New fans can get an overview of all the different genres of heavy metal and some of

the most important bands within those genres. The cover price of $27.95 may seem high for a

paperback, but there is so much good information inside that it's well worth the price.

A musicologist and cultural critic as well as a professional musician, Robert Walser offers a

Dismissed by critics and academics, condemned by parents and politicians, fervently embraced

by legions of fans, heavy metal music attracts and embodies cultural conflicts that are central to

Outstanding Title! Walser's book (his first) is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand

why this widely vilified music became the most popular and commercially successful style of the

1980s. It is not intended as a history; rather, it is a scholarly, provocative, copiously footnoted

treatise in which Walser addresses issues (often myths) that have given heavy metal its notoriety.

While covering the gamut from artists' misogyny and fans' nihilism to allegations of Satanism

and lyrics suggesting "suicide solutions," Walser concludes that it is the music's power and its

ability to empower listeners that must be understood. This ground-breaking book will force many

readers to confront their prejudices about heavy metal, its performers, its audience, and its

meanings. Indispensable for academic libraries both undergraduate and graduate level and highly

enlightening detail. Bazillion Points has extensively revised and updated a classic for this

    expanded edition.

    Review:

    Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In his introduction, Ekeroth explains the youth phenomenon that was Swedish

Death Metal (it sounds pretty much like you would think) as natural in a country "generally

made up of extremely small and boring towns." Ekeroth traces the movement that produced

more than a thousand bands, from proto-genre "thrash metal" (more punk) to bastard offshoots

like "black metal" (more makeup, less fun), through interviews with the musicians, tape-traders

and fanzine writers who were there. Maybe worth the price alone is the appendix, an "A to Z of

Swedish Death Metal Bands," which features brief profiles and discographies (with Ekeroth's

opinions) of every known SDM band, from world-famous At the Gates ("all their albums are

classic masterpieces") to Slakt (just one 2005 demo, "probably nerds"). More than 500 black and

    white photos and illustrations.

Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi‘s invigorating documentary profiles a group called Acrassicauda,

who bill themselves as Iraq‘s only heavy metal band. Under Saddam Hussein‘s rule, public

performance of heavy metal music was not permitted, but the toppling of Saddam‘s regime

offered Acrassicauda brief hope that they would finally be able to share their music.

Unfortunately, the country‘s collapse into civil war killed any hopes of freedom of musical

expression. Still, the four-man Acrassicauda pressed on (in a country where someone wearing a

Slipknot t-shirt can be arrested), eventually lining up a hotel club gig (although the venue is later

destroyed in a car bombing). Much of the documentary also focuses on filmmakers Moretti and

Suroosh, who make their way through the dangerous Baghdad streets with increasing numbers of

expensive bodyguards (Moretti remains philosophical, stating at one point: ―You know, heavy

metal rules.‖). Ultimately, the band—calling themselves ―heavy metal refugees‖—is forced to

flee to safety in Damascus. DVD extras include the 45-minute follow-up documentary ―Heavy

    Iron Maiden‘s 2008 ―Somewhere Back in Time‖ tour, comprising some 23 sold-out shows in 21

cities (from Mumbai to Monterrey [Mexico], from Sao Paolo to Sydney, in venues ranging from

band, their families, and their 70-member crew, traveling in a customized Boeing 757 airliner,

nicknamed ―Ed Force One‖ (after Eddie, the Iron Maiden mascot), piloted in part by lead singer

Bruce Dickinson. More to the point, the power of their music is undiminished, and fans will

appreciate the inclusion of a 104-minute, career-spanning, 16-song concert (each tune is drawn

from a different stop on the tour) offering an adrenaline-fueled celebration for both the musicians

individual who does not accept solicited submissions. These two sites maintain a high level of

accuracy in their information. All three databases are good resources for researching band

names, countries of origin, genre (or sub-genre) and discographies. Selection criteria is the same

for all databases. These criteria include currency (the speed with which e-content is added or

updated), quality of end-user interface, content, reputation, credentials, or authoritativeness of

editor and reviewers, and access points (e.g., indexes, level of detail in the table of contents).

    Magazine (Journal) Resources

For my last resource I would ask that the library subscribe to several magazines devoted

exclusively to Heavy Metal. Since there are really no scholarly journals devoted to this subject,

consumer magazines are the only alternative. Having issues of these magazines available will be

another valuable resource to library users as a way to track trends and other happenings in the

genre. This analysis applies to all the magazines selected. The criteria used to select these

magazines were an active status, recently published (current information), writing style,

comprehensiveness and breadth, ease of use, uniqueness of content, and cost in relation to

    quality of item.

Douglas McClemont, Library Review Service. (May 15, 2005)

This heavy metal weekly is aimed at a youthful male "bad-boy" audience. Concert news,

interviews and photos of the likes of Green Day, Marilyn Manson, Velvet Revolver, Black

Sabbath, Slipknot, Him, Slayer, Nightwish, Kiss, My Chemical Romance and The Used are

crammed into each issue. Issue # 1060 features a special feature on the Download festival, as

well as poster, postcards of bands and a free CD attached to the cover. The art direction is

designed to look haphazard and cool, with dozens of mini music reviews sharing space with

calendars and snapshots. No doubt followers of this genre of music will devour each issue,

librarians may find it too specialized for circulation. -

    Review:

    Library Journal

    Michael Colford (Feb 15, 2001)

Just like musicians, music journalists (essentially frustrated musicians) have side projects to

blow off creative steam and pull in another paycheck. That's the best way to describe this new

bimonthly for the 18-36-year old rock fan, headed by Guitar World editor-in-chief Brad Tolinski.

With guns-for-hire Ann Powers (pop music critic, the New York Times), Anthony DeCurtis ( an

old hand at Rolling Stone), Charles Shaar Murray (a New Music Express veteran), and Jim

DeRogatis (pop music critic, the Chicago Sun-Times), Revolver boasts an impressive but small

staff. Content wise, however, the magazine has a while to go before it lives up to its claim of "the

world's most wanted music magazine." At this point, it‘s only real distinguishing characteristic is

its digestibility. Issue No.3's cover story on Irish rockers U2 is disappointing brisk; it's not that

DeCurtis writes poorly-it just that his narrative is too short to be engrossing. In No.2, however,

Revolver hits its mark with a languid eight page spread on dearly departed and mostly forgotten

Big Star, which gave the world Alex Chilton. Hopefully, the magazine will carry on this spirit of

long-windedness because there are still readers out there with attention spans. Recommended for

    larger public libraries.
