Welcome to the first ever Annual Collaton St Mary Country Show!You are joining us for a very special free event – an opportunity for the whole community to come together for a memorable, fun afternoon of entertainment and learning, that will be opened officially by the internationally renowned polar explorer, conservationist and educationalist: Dr Antony Jinman.

Collaton St Mary Country Show, on Saturday 6th July 2013, is a horticultural country show like no other! It is a platform that connects young people, members of the community, traders and enthusiasts in a fun and energetic way. With horticulture at its heart, the show has classes of locally grown fruit and vegetables, a baking competition, and a number of trade stands inside and out.

In addition to this, at the Collaton St Mary Country Show we will be providing our visitors with the very best entertainment, to ensure that everyone has a fantastic day. We have a number of professional singers and bands performing, including Celine Dos Santos, Ekul’s House and Paddy’s Whiskers. You will also be entertained and amused by the hilarious Byng’s Pig Racing. The children will also entertain you at their talent show, or in a number of other demonstrations.

The Collaton St Mary Country Show will also present educational activities that will engage local enthusiasts, specialists, traders, families and community members to gain a mutual understanding, passion and exploration of horticulture. With support from The Real Ideas Organisation (RIO), the National Trust, and Education through Expeditions, we will be creating a show that will continually evolve and grow to ensure it is able to provide a sustainable community resource and opportunity that enables a hugely creative and innovative concept, leaving a legacy for Collaton’s local community.

Over the past 7 years Antony has developed a career as a Polar Explorer and Polar Educator, completing 15 expeditions to date, including becoming the 26th Briton to travel the 500+ miles across the Arctic Ocean from land to the Geographic North Pole in 51 days, a feat which only 200 people have ever accomplished.

All of Antony’s expeditions have education and outreach work at their core, aiming to explore and capture what it is like to live in the Arctic and communicate that to a wider audience. His approach is founded on the belief that it isn’t enough to just travel somewhere; it has to be of value to the wider community so that we all can learn from an experience and journey.

Antony was born and raised in Plymouth and always dreamed of becoming a polar explorer and following in the footsteps of his boyhood hero, Plymouth-born Captain Robert Falcon Scott. This was a dream that Antony had from an early age, so why not ask him how do you become a Polar Explorer?

After leaving school and college, Antony spent time serving in the Territorial Army and then in the Royal Navy and it was there he discovered he was dyslexic. Tragically, at the age of 21, Antony broke his back whilst on a snowboarding holiday, an event which changed his life. He decided that he wanted to pursue his dream and attempt to do what people had always told him he would never achieve, to become a Polar Explorer.

At 23, he got a job as a tour leader taking

groups on adventure holidays. It was whilst in this job that the world suddenly began to make sense and subjects that he struggled to

understand in the classroom became a lot clearer. It is this enhanced learning experience that Education through Expeditions (ETE) wishes to emulate, bringing credible eyewitness accounts of locations across the world directly into the classroom.

At 25 Antony became an expedition leader and International Mountain Leader which took him on his first Arctic expedition to Baffin Island. After this great experience Antony was asked to visit his old school to give a presentation. This became another turning point in his life, as Antony was able to talk confidently about his experiences and pass on the lessons learned to his audience. It is now as an educator and not as an explorer that Antony would like to be remembered. To be able to share and inspire young people to follow their own ambitions in life.

Education through Expeditions’ next journey will see Antony Jinman travel to Antarctica to follow in the footsteps of his heroes, Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackelton. The aim of the project is to run an interactive educational expedition to the South Pole, enabling school children to follow Antony’s progress and ask him questions along the way. Antony aims to be one of a handful of Britons to accomplish successful expeditions to both the North and South poles.

Paignton Cricket Club’s youth section is thriving, and they have entered teams in the Under 10, Under 11, Under 12, Under 13, Under 14, Under 15, and Under 19 South Devon League competition. They will also be entering festivals for U9 teams & Girls teams.

So far this season has been very succesful with several of the age groups either top or 2nd in their league. The U15 team has also reached the final of the Devon Cup.

Practice for all the colts teams takes place weekly at Queens Park from 5.30pm until 7.30pm on Friday’s.

The club’s very popular Sunday Morning Club, for boys and girls aged from 5 to 11, commenced on Sunday 5th May and runs from 10.30am until 12noon, and will run weekly until the beginning of the school holidays. We regularly have 70+ youngsters attend on Sunday mornings.

Scarecrow Making - Get Creating and Make Your Own Scarecrow

We are inviting you and your family to make your own scarecrow using the materials provided at our workshop. We have some great scarecrow ideas and will help you with your design. You don’t need to be a good artist or crafts person, but you need a fun imagination and the willingness to have a go! When the growing season is over, keep your scarecrow dry and safe for next year. This workshop will take place from 1.30-2.00pm. StorytellingCome and join us for a story! Collaton St Mary Preschool will be holding several storytelling sessions throughout the day in the sensory garden (weather permitting). There is a wealth of research to support the fact that children who are read to on a regular basis when they are young are well prepared for success in reading and learning once they start school. Furthermore, reading to your child teaches them about communication, concepts such as letters, shapes, counting and colours, and builds their listening, memory and vocabulary skills. Most importantly it’s fun too!

Here at Collaton St. Mary School we are proud to say we use great, healthy, organic ingredients in our meals. One of our fantastic suppliers is Riverford Farm Dairy – an 800 acre mixed farm set in the beautiful South Hams. They have a 250 head dairy herd including a mixture of Fresian and Brown Swiss, Normandie, Montbeliard, Swiss Red, Dairy Shorthorn and Ayreshire breeds. They produce fantastic quality, organic milk, cream, butter and yoghurt.

Riverford Rhubarb & Ginger Fool

Ingredients:3 egg yolks½ tsp cornflour1 tbsp caster sugar200ml double cream100ml milk

Seeds from ½ vanilla pod (or ¼ tsp vanilla extract)450g rhubarb75g light soft brown sugar1 tsp ground ginger

Method:1. Whisk the egg yolks in a large bowl with the cornflower and sugar

2. Bring the cream and milk to boiling point in a pan with the vanilla, then gradually whisk into the egg mixture

3. Pour back into the pan and cook, stirring constantly, over a low heat for about 5 mins (but keep an eye on it), until thickened

4. Trim the rhubarb into short lengths and place in a saucepan with 1 tbsp water, the ginger and brown sugar

5. Bring to simmering point and cook gently for 10-15minutes until the fruit is soft

6. Allow to cool and when almost cool, liquidise with the custard made earlier

7 Chill and serve in glasses decorated with grated curls of chocolate

Collaton St. Mary has placed great importance on the quality of their school meals and enhancing the children’s lunchtime experience, so the school kitchen has become an integral part of school life.

The school joined the ‘Food for Life partnership’ and has put a number of practices in place to ensure a

positive, inclusive, healthy and enjoyable lunchtime experience for the children, including using their own, home grown vegetable alongside local meat and fish.

The centres are now full of plantlets of vegetable, salads and herbs. For those that find growing from seed daunting, this is the ideal solution! Remember many need hardening off so be wary about planting them straight outside – ask in the centre for advice if you are unsure. Many vegetable crops can be sown as seed this month – check the instructions on the packet and plant away! Broad beans, carrots, lettuces, spinach, salad leaves, leeks and chard are just a few ideas to get your healthy, cheap and home grown food underway! Sow seeds in short runs every fortnight to ensure a continuous crop. Don’t sew entire packets of seed in one go… the resulting glut is ridiculous! Plant out brassicas (net them to prevent birds eating them) and grow short term crops such as

lettuces and radishes between them to maximise the space. Get ahead with the summer crops – sweet peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and salads can be planted in your greenhouse. Earth up potatoes – draw the soil up to a ridge and over the plants when they are 6 inches tall. Repeat in a month and then again 2 or 3 weeks later. This prevents sunlight getting to the tubers, which turns them green and renders them poisonous. Continue with Spring cleaning. Hoe your borders to get rid of weeds before they take hold. If it is dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Remember these systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Dandelions are a monstrous nuisance at this time of the year – if you don’t have time to

deal with them terminally, at least chop their heads off before they set seed. Water is a precious commodity – instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as convenient! The trick with watering is to water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often – although containers and baskets do need watering every day. Happy gardening!
