Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is considered one of the best MGM musicals of the 1950s. When Adam (Howard Keel)
brings home his new bride Milly (Jane Powell), she is appalled at the brothers'
slovenliness and sets about turning these unwashed louts into immaculate gentle-
men. The brothers get into a scuffle with a group of townsmen over the affection of six comely lasses, but a happy ending is ultimately had by all in this delightful if
politically incorrect concoction.

In a blog, posted on the Institute of Faith, Works and
Economics web site (https://tifwe.org/four-principles-of-biblical-stewardship/), Hugh Whelchel summarized an essay written by Mr. Bill Peel, the Executive Director of The Center for Faith and Work at LeTourneau University. In this essay, entitled “Four Principles of Biblical Stewardship.” Peel identified these four principles of stewardship as: ownership, responsibility, accountability, and reward. A good Christian must always live in a way that acknowl-edges the first principle of stewardship: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Ps 24:1). Or, as C.S. Lewis once stated in his classic text, Mere Christianity: “Every faculty you have, your power of thinking or of mov-ing your limbs from moment to moment, is given you by God. If you devoted eve-ry moment of your whole life exclusively to His service, you could not give Him anything that was not in a sense His own already.”
Peel writes that: “Owners have rights; stewards have responsibilities.” Everything we possess is God’s gift to us. We are called to care for, develop, and manage- even as we enjoy-all that He has given us. This is the responsibility of a good steward: to commit one’s self and all of our possessions-body, mind and spirit- to God’s service. Good stewards rec-ognize that all that is, was, or ever will be, comes from God. In gratitude and humility, they offer back to God all that they are and all that they have, asking Him to use them according to His holy will.
As stewards of God’s gifts, we are called to use our time, our money, our abilities and the opportunities the Lord has given us to build up His kingdom on earth. As He does in today’s Gospel, Jesus often told parables to teach the princi-ples of good and bad stewardship. In these teachings, He reminded His listeners that one day they would be held accountable to the Lord for the use of the gifts He has given them. This principle of reward- and punishment-is made very clear in Jesus’ teaching of the Last Judgement (Mt 25).
Good stewards of all that God has given them share personal traits, too. They are those who are poor in spirit, meek and mild in all of their daily interactions. Good stew-ards are good Christians who humbly acknowledge that it is only by the grace of God that they have life. Each day, they acknowledge that apart from Jesus they can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Good stewards freely, humbly, and lovingly share what they have with those who mourn, despair, or struggle. They fill the minds and hearts of those who hunger and thirst for righteousness with the Word of God, the Spirit of Truth. They make peace where there is none, and when others insult or persecute them, they rejoice and are glad, knowing their reward is great in heaven. Good Christian stewards are light in a dark world, salt for a dying universe. Good stewards are pure in heart. They want nothing for themselves but seek instead honor and glory for God and peace and joy for His People. All that they do, think and say is directed to their ultimate goal: the Kingdom of Heaven, eternal life (See Mt 5: 1-16.).
A Permanent Deacon is the Roman Catholic Church must be a good steward who possesses all of the personal qualities that Jesus delineates in the Sermon on the Mount. He is called to assist the pastor by visiting the sick, teaching the faith, and working on parish committees and councils. The duties and responsibilities of the deacon will vary from parish to parish depending on the needs identified by their pastors. Deacons are members of the clergy who can baptize, witness and blesses marriages, perform funeral and burial services outside of Mass, distribute Holy Communion, preach the homily. In addition to the biblical readings at daily Mass, deacons are obligated to pray the Divine Office (Breviary) each day. These are the 150 Psalms and Scriptural readings from the
Old and New Testament that every deacon, priest, and bishop must pray every day and a few times during each day. The word “deacon” comes from the Greek “diákonos” meaning “servant.” This does not mean that it is a lowly or unimportant office.
From the earliest days of our Church to the present, a deacon must be “morally pure, spiritually mature, doctrinally strong, and able to handle money responsibly.” He must also be a good example in his family life and in the life of the commu-nity. Saint Paul tells us that a deacon should have the gift of "helping" (1 Cor. 12:28) and the gift of "showing mercy" (Rom. 12:8).
In the histories of our collaborative parishes, we have been blessed by the ordination of men whose stewardship of God’s many gifts have borne great fruit in their lives and the life of our Church. Last week, Deacon Henry Welch, who served so faithfully throughout the diocese was laid to rest. In 2017, Van Nguyen, parishioner of Saint Thomas More parish, was ordained and now serves the people of Sacred Heart parish, Quincy. And, although he is now a Senior Deacon, Ken Ryan, continues to bless our parishes with his service at Mass, Baptisms, funerals and burials, Adoration, Communion services at local nursing homes. Most recently, Deacon Ken has helped another parishioner, Bash Goppee, prepare for his ordination as a Permanent Deacon in our Church.
Bash himself has always offered his help and kind-ness to our parishioners. He has proven, by his witness and example, that he is worthy of the exalted title of Deacon in our Church. Yet, he would be the first to acknowledge that he could not do this without the grace of God and the loving support of his wife, Geeta, their family and friends. Following his ordination yesterday (Sept. 21) in Holy Cross Cathedral, Bash has been assigned by Cardinal Sean to serve as Deacon of our collaborative parishes and in the Archdiocesan Pro-Life Office.
Deacon Bashan Goppee now stands on the shoulders of those deacons who have served in our parishes before him. Hank, Ken, Van, and now Bashan, have been Christian stewards from whom we can all learn much. The journey that has taken these men to their ordination demonstrates, once again, that God does indeed keep His promises declar-ing: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.” (Mt 25:21).

Collaborative Parishes of Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More
We ask that you prayerfully consider this method for financially supporting
your parishes:
Online Giving, Weekly Envelopes, Auto Bill Pay assure consistent giving and help us to budget and assure that we can maintain services. While we
are most grateful for any gift that any parishioner can give at any time to help us maintain a more consistent
cash flow, we have established online giving programs at both Sacred Heart
& Saint Thomas More Parishes.
https://shstm.org/sacred-heartonline-giving
https://shstm.org/st-thomas-more-online-giving
Those parishioners who use the program tell us it is a great help to them.
It allows them to clearly budget the amount that they want to give back to God
and helps them feel assured that their parish is receiving their gift even when
they are out-of-town, too busy to remember an envelope, or attending Mass
at another parish. If you would like to learn more about this easy, safe and secure
way of giving, please call or stop by our Business office or visit our website
(www.shstm.org).
Collaborative Food Pantry
Our Food Pantry is located in the hall at St. Thomas More. We are grateful for the many donations we receive each week. But, as the number of families in need of assistance increases, food items to stock our pantry are always needed. Items may be left in the foyers of each Church any time. Thank you for your continuing generosity! Any questions concerning this service, or to volunteer, kindly call Maureen at the office.
