Welcome to our 2011–2012 Course Guide. I hope you find it to be an informative and useful aid to determining your next steps.This year’s guide is informed and influenced by student comments, views and suggestions so it reflects the College Mission ‘to place learners at the heart of everything we do’.As Scotland’s oldest College, we understand very well the difference education makes – not only to individuals but also to families and the communities where they live. The qualification you choose to study will open up an exciting learning progression route for you to pursue. You can join the path at various stages, depending upon your ability and previous qualifications. The aim is to follow the study route that’s right for you which will ultimately lead you to a new career, a better job or a promotion.

GETTING STARTEDYou can start your studies at Coatbridge College at any level. Whatever your age, experience and learning to date, we can help you choose the course that suits you best.

If you have been away from study for a while or are leaving school with Standard Grades/Intermediate 1 or 2 qualifications, you’re likely to join our Access or National Qualification (NQ) programmes.

If you are leaving school with Highers or Advanced Higher qualifications, or if you are a mature student and have relevant experience, you may join one of our Higher National (HN) programmes.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR OUR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSInternational English Language Testing System (IELTS) of 5.5 or equivalent is required for all of our courses.

QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED

PROGRESSING TO UNIVERSITY OR EMPLOYMENTOur courses are designed to enable you to progress to University. Our Access courses (SWAP) allow direct entry to year 1 of a variety of University courses.

HNC courses usually allow you to progress to year 1 of University. Certain HNC courses allow you to enter directly into year 2.

HND courses usually allow you to enter into year 2 of University and, in certain cases, year 3.

Our links with employers and industrial training bodies make sure that the courses are relevant to current employment opportunities.

BACHELORS DEGREESDegrees are Higher Education qualifications that help you develop a thorough understanding of a subject. There are several different types and a vast number of subjects to choose from.

A bachelors degree (sometimes known as an ‘ordinary’ or ‘first’ degree) can lead to a qualification such as a bachelor of arts (BA), bachelor of science (BSc), or a bachelor of medicine (MB). Depending on the subject you choose, a bachelors degree normally takes 3 to 4 years to complete full time.

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (HNC) / DIPLOMA (HND) The HNC and HND qualifications offer huge opportunities if you are serious about your career prospects and your future. Not only are they recognised by employers for their vocational value, many offer the opportunity for you to progress directly onto University as they are equivalent to the first and second year of a degree. They are also highly regarded by many professional/technical bodies. So, whether you want to go straight into a job or continue your studies, getting a Higher National Qualification is a good place to start.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATES (NC)National Certificates are normally one year, full time courses at non-advanced level, with many requiring no or few qualifications. Many students studying NC courses go onto employment or alternatively progress further to non-advanced, Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma level.

NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (NQ)National Qualifications are non-advanced qualifications which include National Units, National Courses and Scottish Group Awards. They can be achieved at five levels:

INTERMEDIATE 1Broadly equivalent to Standard Grade at General Level

INTERMEDIATE 2Broadly equivalent to Standard Grade at Credit Level

On successful completion of a Scottish Group Award or programme of National Units you should be qualified to gain employment. Alternatively, you can continue your education at a more advanced level using your National Qualification as a stepping stone.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD (PDA)PDA’s are customised qualifications designed to meet the needs of individuals and employers who wish to develop their professional skills in a specific area.

SCOTTISH VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (SVQ’s)Study is vocationally orientated and covers training related to employment. SVQ’s are available to people of all ages and at all stages of their careers. This is an ideal route to follow if you are looking for a work based route to career development. SVQ’s are available in a wide range of subject areas at five different levels; from junior positions right up to senior management posts. As a result, they are a guarantee of ability to do a job of work to a high standard.

INTRODUCTION TO SCOTTISH CREDIT AND QUALIFICATIONS FRAMEWORK (SCQF)

WHAT IS THE SCQF?The SCQF is a way of comparing the wide range of Scottish qualifications. It covers achievements such as those from school, college, university and many work based qualifications. It does this by giving each qualification a level and a number of credit points. The level of a qualification shows how difficult the learning is. The credit points show how much learning is involved in achieving that qualification. Each credit point represents an average of 10 hours of learning.

THE SCQF CAN:•help you decide how you progress in your learning;

•help you understand qualifications you are not familiar with;

•help employers understand different types of qualifications and help with the development of your skills;

•help colleges and universities identify the level that has been studied in a particular subject and make it easier to transfer credit points between different learning programmes; and

•provide recognition of other areas of your learning that may contribute to your personal development and your goals for the future.

IMI LEVEL 1 AWARD IN VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR (LIGHT VEHICLE) Broadly comparable to SCQF Level 4/5 (1 year full time)

This Level 1 qualification consists of six practical based units which cover the basic technical needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry. It provides essential knowledge and involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of working with light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots and provides a good introduction to the automotive industry. Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

What does it involve?•Light Vehicle Construction and Routine Maintenance•Operating Principles of Light Vehicle Engines, Tyres and Brakes•Steering and Suspension Systems•Maintenance of Light Vehicle Transmission Systems•Electrical and Electronic Systems

Are there any exams?Your knowledge is assessed by IMI set practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment. There are also IMI online multiple choice tests.

What do I need to start?•Three Standard Grades, or equivalent, at level 4 or above. •A keen interest in the motor vehicle industry and the drive to succeed are essential.

What can I do afterwards?This course will teach you the skills that are required to apply for apprenticeships in the motor vehicle industry. It can also provide a progression route to IMI Level 2 courses in Light Vehicle or Auto Electrical, or City and Guilds Level 2 courses in a variety of automotive areas.

IMI LEVEL 1 AWARD IN VEHICLE MAINTENANCE

I first studied mechanics at the College while I was in my 4th year of high school and really enjoyed it. When I left school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I thought about my experience at Coatbridge College and decided I wanted to come back to study for my IMI Level 1 Award.

I love working with cars and learning about how they work. You get hands on experience and the lecturers are really helpful. I’m learning about so many different parts of a car from the wheels to braking systems, steering and engine technology.

This qualification gives me a good introduction to the world of mechanics and will set me up to find a job in a garage when I complete my course.

CURRICULUM LEADER

The Beauty Therapy section is able to offer qualifications ranging from Level 4 Access programmes through to Level 8 Higher National courses. Our programmes cover a range of topics including Beauty Care, Make-up and advanced Beauty Therapy techniques. Our advanced courses also include Spa and Complementary Therapy units.

Our partnership agreement with Napier University means that all HND students are able to apply for the Complementary Therapy degree course there!Our students are able to gain a variety of employment opportunities such as employment in a Spa or Beauty Salon, self employment, cruise ships, health, fitness and medical centres even lecturing opportunities. Some of our current lecturing staff were former students!

We encourage and support all our students to reach their full potential. Our students are continually successful when nominated for national awards including Enterprising Student of the Year, World Skills Champion at regional and national levels and Vocational Learner of the Year Award. One of our students was even awarded the College’s most prestigious accolade, the Chairs Award!

SVQ LEVEL I BEAUTY THERAPY SCQF LEVEL 4 (1 year full time)

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Beauty Therapy to Assistant Beauty Therapist level. This course includes certification of Core Skills.

Treatments you will learn include manicure, facial cleansing, face painting, nail art and make-up. You will be introduced to complementary therapies and massage. You will learn basic anatomy and physiology.

You will learn to assist in a realistic salon environment with paying clients and have the opportunity to take part in Citizenship activities.

Assessments will include working with paying clients in a realistic salon environment.

What does it involve?•Prepare and Maintain the Beauty Therapy Work Area•Assist with Facial Treatments•Assist with Nail Treatments on the Hands•Human Biology•Ensure your Own Actions Reduce the Risks of Health and Safety•Assist with Reception Duties•Commercial Salon•Nail Art•Core Skills in IT, Communication, Numeracy and Working with Others

Are there any exams?Your course involves a combination of continual assessment with independent assessment. At the beginning of each unit, your lecturer will indicate what evidence is required to achieve the unit. Practical skills competencies are assessed by summative assessments, which are completed by assisting/providing treatments in a commercial beauty salon.

What do I need to start?•Two Standard Grades, or equivalent, at level 4.•You will be expected to have an interest in working with people and have a high standard of personal presentation. •You will be required to wear a regulation uniform for all practical classes.•You may need to purchase some stationary and a data stick.

What can I do afterwards?NC Beauty Care and Make-up. Alternatively employment as a Beauty Therapy Assistant within a salon or department store may be secured.


BEAUTY, SPA AND HOLISTIC THERAPIES

NC BEAUTY CARE AND MAKE-UPSCQF LEVEL 5 (1 year full time)

This course will enable you to develop Beauty Skills and Make-up techniques. You will learn facial and body treatments that include facial cleansing, mask therapies, back massage, hand treatments, eyelash and eyebrow tinting and waxing of the body and face. You will be trained to use fabulous facial and body products and gain retail and product knowledge to industry standard. You will develop nail enhancement techniques, including artificial nail applications.

You will build a portfolio of images to include photographic evidence of make-up and face painting applications you have applied. This course includes certification of Core Skills.

You will be required to purchase some stationary and a data stick. You will need to provide photographs for assessment purposes. Regulation uniform will need to be worn for all practical classes.

Assessments will include working with paying clients in a realistic salon environment.

What does it involve?•Facial Skin Care•Waxing Skills•Manicure•Bridal Make-up•Day and Corrective Make-up•Competition Skills•Face Painting•Portfolio Presentation Skills•Reception and Selling Skills•Artificial Nails•Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage•Core Skills in IT, Communications and Working with Others

What can I do afterwards?This course offers direct access to HND Beauty Therapy or HND Complementary Therapies. Alternatively, employment as a self employed mobile therapist or employment within a salon environment is also possible.

You will gain the knowledge and skills required to be a Complementary Therapist by carrying out specific treatments on clients within the College salons. Successful students will be able to carry out holistic massage, aromatherapy massage and reflexology treatments. You will be ideally qualified to start your own business or work in the area of complementary therapy. You will be required to wear regulation uniform as well as purchase stationery and a data stick.

What can I do afterwards?On successful completion you can study for the BSc Complementary Therapies at Napier University at year three. This HND qualification can also enable access to various health related courses at a number of Universities. Alternatively, you may become a self employed Complementary Therapist or you may gain employment in the health sector or in a health clinic.

*The first year of the HND is equivalent to an HNC at SCQF Level 7.

You will learn advanced beauty therapy treatments to match industry requirements. These will include product knowledge and retail techniques. Advanced face and body techniques will be developed through training using state of the art equipment and products. You will study complementary therapy treatments to include aromatherapy and reflexology.

This course aims to combine beauty therapy and management skills to produce multi-skilled personnel for the beauty industry, therefore, this course also includes a business unit.

Your beauty knowledge and skills will be further enhanced through participation in employment experience and through being able to take part in advanced training opportunities.

You will work closely with clients and manage client case studies as part of your assessment.

What can I do afterwards?Following successful completion you can study for the BSc Complementary Therapies at Napier University. An HND qualification can enable access to various health related degree courses at a number of Universities. Alternatively, employment within a health spa or beauty salon, on cruise ships, a sales representative or trainer for a beauty company may be sought. You may also become self employed.

HNC COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES

I loved my course here at Coatbridge College! I completed an HNC in Complementary Therapies. I was initially attracted to the College as I was told it is the best training you can get in the Beauty Therapy industry. The lecturers provide you with amazing support and are very passionate about what they are teaching which is really inspiring and encourages you to succeed.

My lecturers played a large part in me winning the ‘Holistic Therapy – Reflexology’ section of WorldSkills UK. This is something that has helped to improve my confidence in my own ability.

During my course I learned numerous skills that have allowed me to progress to a BA Hons course entering at second year at Napier University. As well as this, I run my own clinic in Coatbridge using the skills that I have learned on my course.

CURRICULUM LEADER

Welcome to the Business and Management section of the Course Guide. Over the past year we’ve experienced exciting changes in our section including state of the art learning and teaching classrooms and additions to the curriculum. We aim to continue this trend by including further courses this year and being ahead of the pack in terms of the facilities we offer to students.

As our students will tell you, the Business and Management section has keen links with industry and, most importantly, a strong and committed lecturing team. The team continues to offer their experience and are approachable and friendly; taking an avid interest in each student to help them achieve their goals.

We offer a wide variety of courses to suit all abilities and aspirations, and we are delighted that our students can start off at a basic level and stay with us right through to completion of a Degree in Business! For the last four years the Degree programme has been a great success. So much so that the majority of students successfully completing their HND last year are now in the process of completing their Degree in Business.

We prepare students for careers within the business community including roles within Administration, Management, Information Technology, Accounts and many more, in all types of industries. If you’re interested in starting your studies or a change of career, I am sure you’ll find a course with us that suits you.

This course provides the administrative and IT skills required for employment in a modern office environment.

NQ BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTINGSCQF LEVEL 5/6 (1 year full time)

This course will introduce you to the basic concepts of business and accounting. You will develop skills in financial and management accounting as well as core business subjects. There will be a focus on employability skills and the development of personal financial responsibility.

This course will provide you with the administrative skills to succeed in a modern office environment. You will develop advanced skills in a broad range of IT applications as well as develop skills in the professional areas of office administration.

Are there any exams?The course is assessed in a variety of ways – essays, reports, presentations and closed book assessments. In addition, there is a Graded Unit at the end of the course.

What do I need to start?•A National Qualification such as NQ Administration and IT or NQ Business and Accounting, with appropriate units including Numeracy and Communication, or•two SQA Highers, one of which must be English, or•three Intermediate 2’s including Communication and IT.•Students with relevant work/life experience may be considered following discussion with the Course Tutor.

What can I do afterwards?HND Administration and IT, progression to a BA in Business Studies, or you can apply for posts in various industries in a supervisory and/or business role.

After leaving school I started at the College in the NQ Accounting course and decided to continue my studies to HND level. I’m now in my second year of HND Administration and IT and I’m really enjoying the course.

The lecturers in Business are all really good and always helpful. Once I’ve completed my HND I’d like to study for my BA Business and because of the good relationship I already have with lecturers, I’d like to complete this at the College too.

HND INTERACTIVE MEDIA

After high school I came to College to study Access Digital Media. I really enjoyed it so moved on to the NQ and I’m now in the first year of my HND Interactive Media. The College is great – I enjoy coming to learn here. The lecturers are brilliant, always there to help whenever you need it and you get to use the latest technology – my class even get to use the new Apple Mac computers which is great!

Once I complete my HND I’d like to go to University to study image editing or web development.

NATIONAL EXAM BOARD FOR DENTAL NURSES CERTIFICATE IN DENTAL NURSING (1 year full time with part time options) Subject to Approval

The National Certificate is one of the qualifications approved by the General Dental Council (GDC) enabling professional registration as a Dental Nurse.

The course provides you with the skills and knowledge to perform the role of a Dental Nurse working within a variety of clinical settings. Training will take place within the School’s state of the art training rooms to develop clinical skills with learning being transferred into a clinical environment via a placement.

This course can be accessed part time if you are currently employed in a dental practice as a Dental Nurse.

What does the course involve? •Health and Safety and Infection Control in the Workplace •Emergencies in the Clinical Environment •Legal and Ethical Issues in the Provision of Dental Care •Anatomical Structures and Systems Relative to Dental Care •Oral Disease and Pathology •Patient Care and Management •Assessing Patients’ Oral Health Needs and Treatment Planning •Oral Health Promotion and Preventive Dentistry •Restorative Dentistry •Oral Surgery •Orthodontic Procedures •Dental Drugs, Materials, Instruments and Equipment •Pain and Anxiety Control in Dentistry •Radiography •Communication

Are there any exams? The National Certificate external examination consists of five sections which comprise of two written papers, a spotter test, a practical and oral test. Candidates are required to pass all five sections. There is also continual assessment resulting in the completion of a five unit Record of Experience (ROE) which must be completed prior to entry to the external examination.

You must also complete a case study of between 1000 and 1500 words focusing on the role of the Dental Nurse during a chairside procedure.

What do I need to start? •Communication at level 4, or •Higher English at C grade or above, and•an additional Higher at grade C or above, or •Introduction to Dental Nursing at level 5.

What can I do afterwards?On successful completion of this vocational qualification, you can register with the General Dental Council as a qualified Dental Nurse and work within a variety of clinical settings. Successful students may continue their studies and articulate towards the HND Dental Nursing (subject to approval). There are also specialist post qualifications, namely The National Exam Board of Dental Nurses qualifications in Dental Radiography, Oral Health Education and the Certificate in Orthodontic Dental Nursing.

Are there any exams? Year One There is continual assessment resulting in the completion of an 11 unit portfolio. The assessment process involves closed book assessments, the completion of a reflective journal, work based observations, projects and presentations. In addition, there is a formal examination, a Professional Development Award in Dental Nursing and a Graded Unit.

Year Two There is continual assessment associated with the units detailed in year two as well as a Graded Unit.

What do I need to start? •Two Highers at grade C or above, one of which should be English.•Applications will also be considered on an individual basis for direct entry into the second year if you already have a Dental Nursing qualification and GDC registration.

What can I do afterwards?On successful completion of the first year of this qualification, you can register with the General Dental Council as a qualified Dental Nurse and articulate onto the second year of the HND Dental Nursing.

There are also specialist post qualifications, namely the National Exam Board of Dental Nurses qualifications in Dental Radiography, Oral Health Education Certificate in Orthodontic Dental Nursing and the Diploma in Orthodontic Dental Nursing.

SVQ LEVEL 3 DENTAL NURSING

I came to Coatbridge College straight from school. I eventually want to go to Glasgow University and study to become a dentist but I thought this course would give me some experience and a basic knowledge first. I just need to go for it – I want to be a dentist because I think it would be more interesting than the usual office job.

I’m on placement in a dental surgery every Tuesday where I take on the role of a dental nurse which I’m enjoying. The lecturing staff have been really supportive of my application to uni and they’re helping me build my confidence.

The PDA Education Support Assistance is a new award which will prepare you to undertake roles which support children and young people in an educational setting.

Coming to College is a big step to take – I worked in a bank for a number of years and wanted a change of career. Coatbridge College provided this opportunity for me. The lecturers at the College provided me with excellent and friendly support and are very easy to approach.

A warm welcome is always on offer to everyone who enters the Hairdressing and Make-up Artistry section. We have excellent training accommodation consisting of a state of the art make-up studio and spacious hairdressing salons providing a wide range of services which are booked through our Hairdressing Reception.

Our portfolio offers a broad range of courses to suit the needs of all students, whether you are just starting out or you have previous experience and want to develop yourself further. We have a highly motivated team of lecturers who will support and inspire you to develop the skills you require to become a confident and successful learner.

The Hairdressing and Make-up Artistry section has a highly regarded reputation due to our outstanding level of student success in regional and national competitions. At the Scottish heats of the WorldSkills UK competitions one of our HND Make-up students won gold in Advanced Media Make-up and one of our hairdressing students won gold in Advanced Hairdressing and then progressed on to achieve a Highly Commended Award at the National finals in London. Our students also won a total of 18 medals and the trophy for the Best College in Scotland at the AHT Competitions.

HND MAKE-UP ARTISTRY

I’ve always been very artistic so the HND Make-up Artistry was perfect for me to be creative. This course is great because it gives you the freedom to do that, as well as learning new skills too. For instance, during my course I was introduced to body painting, something I’ve never done before and since leaving College have used this part of my portfolio to become part of the body painting team for Mac cosmetics.

I currently work for Mac which is opening up so many doors for me and further learning opportunities. I also work as a freelance make-up artist, for which my College skills are invaluable.

I love everything about make-up and being creative with it – Coatbridge College gave me the chance to do just that. I also had the opportunity to showcase my work in national competitions, winning several gold and silver medals in the AHT and WorldSkills competitions.

This course is highly practical and you will be introduced to all aspects of dance. You will develop transferable skills such as Communication and Information Technology. A creative, dynamic, yet disciplined approach is provided, helping you to develop these skills both in a workshop environment and in a range of public performances.

What does it involve?Dance is studied at Intermediate 2 level then progresses in Semester 2 to Higher level. You will develop technique in many forms of dance including jazz, contemporary, tap and ballet.

Are there any exams?Appreciation of Dance, Anatomy and Physiology and Choreography require e-assessment and independent study skills which are developed through our Core Skills programme. Assessment is formative and summative, written, practical and through evaluation. There will also be an external element to the Higher Dance exam.

What do I need to start?•Three Standard Grades, or equivalent, at level 3 or above, and•a passion for dance!

Students’ prior learning can vary greatly from those who have received years of dance training, to candidates with natural ability and the facility to learn new dance techniques. Places are given by audition which includes a dance workshop and one to one interview.

What can I do afterwards?Students from our 10/11 cohort have performed in a variety of high profile events and venues, appearing on TV adverts, stage, newspapers and feature films.

Progression routes include HND Professional Stage Dance, HND Musical Theatre, self employment and undergraduate degree study with a range of UK specialist institutions including the RSAMD, Telford or Dundee Colleges and many London based dance schools.

NQ PERFORMING ARTSSCQF LEVEL 5 (1 year full time)

This course is highly practical and you will be introduced to all aspects of performance. You will develop transferable skills such as Communication and Information Technology. A creative, dynamic, yet disciplined approach is provided, helping you to develop these skills both in a workshop environment and in a range of public performances.

Candidates will achieve dual qualification with both an NQ Performing Arts and NC Acting and Theatre Performance group award (SQA).

What does it involve?Acting is the focus for study, however skills are built in dance and singing to ensure versatility and multiple options for further progression. Levels of study range from Intermediate 2 and Higher throughout the term. You will develop technique in acting skills, devising theatre, movement, dance and singing.

Are there any exams?Assessment is formative and summative, written, practical and through evaluation. High value is placed on performance skills which are assessed through production and class participation.

What do I need to start?•Three Standard Grades, or equivalent, at level 3 or above, or•Intermediate 2 Drama, and •experience in an amateur context, school productions or youth theatre will be considered.

What can I do afterwards?Our past Performing Arts students have completed a pantomime tour of primary schools which they had devised as a class; a large scale high profile project, ‘Transform’ with the National Theatre of Scotland; and many other productions, building skills for further study at HND level. This course provides you with an excellent introduction to a range of performance skills including acting, production, voice, scriptwriting, acting for camera and movement. A creative, dynamic, yet disciplined approach is provided, helping you to develop these skills both in a workshop environment and in a range of public performances.

What does it involve?This course prepares you for professional life with the techniques developed including the use of improvisation, acting for camera, devising theatre, contemporary theatre, movement, singing for an actor, performance and production skills, voice for the actor and creating drama scripts. This intensive course of study will develop you to become a versatile performer. You will be equipped with the ability to self motivate and research roles and characters independently, work towards performance as both a solo and corporate performer, and prepare you for the multiple opportunities available in performance including film, TV, theatre and contemporary performance practice.

Are there any exams?Assessment is formative and summative, written, practical and through evaluation. Performance skills are cross assessed with many other units through productions. The Graded Unit demands independent creation and is both internally and externally verified by SQA.

What do I need to start?•NQ Musical Theatre, or•NQ Performing Arts, or•NQ Dance, or•Higher Drama, and •experience of amateur theatre performance.

Potential students must come to audition with a monologue no more than one minute in length from a published play which suits their playing range. A dance and singing workshop are also part of the process to establish a skills level for entry.

What can I do afterwards?Many of our former students have achieved great success. Some through television dramas such as the BBC’s ‘Gary Tank Commander’ and ‘Hope Springs’. Others have enjoyed success in theatre including the National Theatre of Scotland’s ‘Blackwatch’ or in ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in the West End. HND MUSICAL THEATRESCQF LEVEL 8 (2 years full time*)

You will find this vocational course demanding, physically challenging, stimulating, exciting and above all, fun! You will develop skills in acting, singing, jazz, tap, performance skills, voice, movement and physical theatre, professional development and repertoire. A creative, dynamic, yet disciplined approach is provided, helping you to develop these skills both in a workshop environment and in a range of public performances.

What does it involve?This course prepares you for professional life. The three-fold techniques developed throughout the course include singing skills using Estill Method technique, acting skills using Stanislavski and a range of dance techniques relevant to the professional industry including jazz and tap. This intensive course of study will develop you to become a versatile performer. You will be equipped with the ability to self motivate and research roles and characters independently, work towards performance as both a solo and corporate performer, and prepare for the multiple opportunities available in performance including film, TV, theatre and contemporary performance practice.

Are there any exams?Assessment is formative and summative, written, practical and through evaluation. Performance skills are cross assessed with many other units through productions. The Graded Unit demands independent creation and is both internally and externally verified by SQA.

Potential students must come to audition with a monologue no more than one minute in length from a published play which suits their playing range. In addition, there will be a dance workshop and students should prepare 16 bars of a song from a musical to establish skills level for entry.

What can I do afterwards?Many of our former students have achieved great success in Musical Theatre including the lead role in the West End Musical ‘Shout’. Progression routes include direct entry to the third year BA in Performance at the University of the West of Scotland, undergraduate/post-graduate study at a variety of institutions including Arts Ed, Mount View, Guilford, RSAMD and professional performance in the industry.

My HND equipped me with the tools that the modern day actor needs – singing, movement and of course, acting classes. It prepared me for the next steps of my career, which for me was going on to The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama to continue my studies.

The lecturers’ expertise and life experience at the College is second to none. They gave me all of the support I needed throughout my course and helped me improve and further my career.

Life as an actor is a roller coaster, with its ups and downs, so you really have to want it – it takes hard work and determination. If you put in the hard work, it will happen, and based on my experience, I would say Coatbridge College is a must if you want to go further in this industry. It was even through the College that I was introduced to a Casting Director, resulting in my first big break on TV!

I was in the NC class last year and I’ve come on to the NQ Biomedical course this year. It covers lots of different areas of science like chemistry, biology and microbiology. I like chemistry the best and I enjoy getting to do experiments.

My lecturers are great and they’ve been really supportive. I’m looking at doing the HNC course next year or even going on to University to concentrate on the chemistry side of things.

Would you like to begin a course at College but are unsure which area is best suited to you? Perhaps you feel you need to improve some essential skills before you decide what the future has in store? Whatever the case, the New Opportunities course is likely to be just what you are looking for.

What does it involve? The New Opportunities course is designed to improve a range of skills as well as giving you a chance to sample the different courses on offer at the College. The subjects covered include –•Core Skills subjects including – Communication ICT Numeracy Problem Solving Working with Others

•Employability•Youth Achievement Awards/Duke of Edinburgh Awards•Enterprise•Work Experience•Personal Development Planning•Short ‘taster’ sessions from across the College to give students the chance to sample several different courses in a single year.

Are there any exams?No. You will have the chance to gain certification in Core Skills, PDP and Enterprise all of which will have assessments throughout the year but no final exam.

SQA HIGHER AND INTERMEDIATE STUDY SCQF LEVEL 5/6 (1 year full time/part time)

Do you want to enter Higher Education? Perhaps you want the satisfaction of achieving qualifications in subjects that have always interested you. Whatever your goals, we can help make them a reality. You can choose to study on a full time or part time basis, comprising a range of subjects covering areas such as science, humanities and social science. There are four options available, subject to demand, which allow you to choose the subjects that you feel you would like to take further for your future career aspirations. Subjects can be taken at Higher or Intermediate 2 level depending on your current qualifications and ability.

What does it involve?Each option includes three subjects at Higher (or Intermediate 2 where appropriate), an ICT unit, a Personal Development Planning unit and a guided learning unit.

Study options available at Higher include –Option 1 – English, Psychology and SociologyOption 2 – English, Modern Studies and HistoryOption 3 – Maths, Chemistry and PhysicsOption 4 – Maths, Human Biology/Biology and Chemistry

There is limited flexibility within the groups depending on student numbers.

I left school after completing my fifth year to do my Highers at College. I didn’t like the school learning environment and felt I wasn’t ready for University so Coatbridge College provided me with the stepping stone I needed.

I feel more comfortable at College than I ever have. I get on really well with everyone and the lecturers are great too. I like that you can speak to them and get advice anytime you need it. It’s a better learning environment when your class mates have chosen to be there to learn, you don’t always have that at school.

One of the Highers I’m taking is Psychology. I’m finding it really interesting and have decided to study it further at University – an interest sparked by coming to College.

FOUNDATION COURSE

I am in my second year at the College doing the Foundation Course. This course is really good because there are lots of different classes to learn new skills. My favourite parts of the course are drama and community skills. In drama I have built up my confidence in acting and enjoy dressing up and playing different characters. We also visit different places in the community to learn about community and vocational skills to develop our independence and learn about different jobs. After my course I would maybe like to do another course at the College.

Claiming Benefits While You StudyMost full time students cannot claim benefit since they are no longer available to work. However, if you are disabled, a single parent or are not required to be actively seeking work, you will remain on your benefits while you study. Every student leaving Coatbridge College to start a new job or to join a course at University has something in common – they have all worked hard to develop their Core Skills.

Employers often want more from their staff than practical ability. They need people who can communicate well, plan ahead and work as part of a team. They need people who can perform calculations and are able to analyse and solve everyday problems. Increasingly, they are looking for employees who are able to use computers and technology to do their job.

Here at Coatbridge College we’ll help you develop the skills you’ll need to succeed.

WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO DO?CommunicationCommunication involves reading, writing, talking and listening. Tasks can include summarising a piece of writing, taking part in group discussions or writing a report.

NumeracyNumeracy has two main areas: understanding graphical information such as tables, charts or graphs and being able to solve problems by carrying out calculations.

Using Information Technology (IT)You will learn how to use a computer safely as well as learning to use a range of software packages. For example, it could involve creating a poster or preparing a presentation, it could even mean recording a piece of music. You will also learn how to make the most of the Internet for research.

Working with OthersThis subject is often taught as part of your course. It may be a project or a specific event where you and your classmates form your own team. You will learn how to plan and work effectively with other people as well as reviewing your own performance once the task is complete.

Problem SolvingSolving problems is part of everyday life. At College you will get the opportunity to learn how to analyse situations before planning a strategy for solving a problem. You can expect that the problems will be related to your course and may be activities you already take part in.

Whatever you choose to do, you can be sure Core Skills will play an important part. We are here to help you improve them.

STUDENT PRESIDENT

It’s a pleasure to be introducing myself to you as Coatbridge College’s Student President.

Every year we elect a new Students’ Association which consists of a Student President, Vice President, Events Officer, Welfare Officer and Secretary. As well as the Students’ Association, each class will be asked to nominate a class representative and a depute.

Each month the Students’ Association meet with all class reps to discuss any issues you may have, as well as any news the College would like to pass on to students.

Through these class rep meetings, I gather your views and opinions so I can represent the student body at various committees such as the Board of Management, Academic Standards Committee and the Quality Standards Committee.

This is our College and how we feel is important. Being part of the Students’ Association gives you the opportunity to have an impact on your College experience. Together, we will celebrate our successes and address our concerns.

There is more to College than work – every year we support local and national charities. Some of these include Children in Need, Breast Cancer Awareness and Comic Relief.

I look forward to our year ahead and meeting you around the College.

If you have young children, you may be able to use the College’s purpose built Nursery. This is where we look after your ‘Little Learners’ and they are at the heart of everything we do.

The Nursery provides a safe, stimulating environment for children aged 1 year up to 5 years. By using the documents ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ and ‘Effective Early Development and Learning’, we provide a wide variety of activities which promote your child’s development as an individual.

We actively promote healthy lifestyles and eco

awareness and, as a parent, you are welcome to join our Health Promoting and ECO committees.

Our team of highly dedicated and specialised child care staff will always ensure that your child’s needs and interests are catered for in a fun and exciting way.

My mummy learns hair and make-up things at College so I go to my Nursery.

I like playing with the dinosaur and numbers jigsaws. Sometimes we go outside to play with the toys and I get to dance on the stage or play ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf’ and we run around.

I really like Nursery and next year I’m going to the Big School!

STUDENT INTRANET, WEB AND EMAIL SERVICESFree internet access is available to all of our students within the College premises. You can also use the wireless connection on Library laptops to surf the internet within designated areas.

The student intranet provides information for you about College life. Here you can find advice on student support, check your student diary and access Library facilities. You can also check specific news, events and announcements.

Our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Blackboard, provides you with 24/7 access to your course materials – anytime, anywhere. This includes personal web blog during your study.

Our website (www.coatbridge.ac.uk) includes valuable sources of College information relating to courses, contact information and general information relevant to student life.

The College also provides a student email service that can be accessed from the World Wide Web.

During the student induction week, you will be given access to these systems and trained in how they work and how they can benefit you.

CAREERS ADVICEMaking well informed career decisions can make a real difference to your future after College. Talking over your ideas with a careers adviser can assist you to look ahead and set career goals that are right for you. Use our knowledge and expertise wisely to help you to take the next step on your career path.

LEARNER RESOURCE CENTREThe College Library is located on the ground floor of the College Campus. The service provides a wide range of electronic and printed resources focused on supporting students and the curriculum.

The Library is increasingly providing online material, balanced with a supply of printed books and journals, and has a dedicated support area on the College’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Blackboard. An online catalogue is accessible to provide information on items stocked by the Library.

Computers are available along with laptops, which can be used for research and other activities such as word processing, creating spreadsheets and producing presentations.

Library services include lending, essay binding, laminating, and photocopying. Students can also purchase books through the Library. Library staff are happy to assist with any of the services on offer and to provide appropriate support.

GRADUATION SUCCESSOur 2010 Graduation was a resounding success with staff, students and their guests enjoying a beautiful evening in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Our talented Performing Arts students entertained guests with a medley of songs from the musical ‘Chess’ and we were delighted to be joined by guest speaker, Fraser Doherty, CEO of SuperJam. Fraser shared the story of how he started his own company at the age of 14, with many students finding inspiration in his words for the future.

The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall provided an excellent venue for the showcase event and highlighted 145 Years of Achievement for the College.

SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT MANAGERARLENE

An exciting School-College Partnership has been created which allows school pupils from S3 and S4 to access College courses that are specifically designed for them. This has become extremely popular with the pupils, who can choose courses in a variety of subjects not offered by their own school.

The subjects being offered to S3/4 include:•Beauty Therapy•Hairdressing•Motor Mechanics•Early Education and Child Care

Some schools have purpose built vocational classrooms and other schools have opted for pupils to use College facilities (in these cases the pupils will be escorted to College and transport will be provided). All school pupils will be supported by the College’s Schools Team.

HND BEAUTY THERAPYCHRISTINAI began studying Beauty Therapy through the School-College Partnership in my 3rd year of high school and went on to complete my Higher Beauty. It was great having lecturers come from the College to work in the school salons – it really sparked my interest in Beauty Therapy and made me want to study it further.

The experience I gained through the School-College Partnership meant I was able to progress straight to my HND Beauty Therapy at the College. I was nervous at first but as soon as I got started I knew it was exactly what I wanted to do. I’m really enjoying my course – I get to work with real clients and gain valuable experience that will help me after my studies. Once I’ve completed my course I’d like to become employed as a Beauty Therapist, possibly on a cruise ship.

HEAD TEACHER AT ST ANDREW’S HIGH SCHOOLMICHAELI can’t speak highly enough of the School-College Partnership between St Andrew’s High and Coatbridge College. We have a very high standard of learning and teaching facilities at the school including an automotive workshop, beauty salon and crafts rooms so that lecturers from the College can visit the school to deliver such subjects to our pupils.

Providing pupils with the opportunity to study various subjects enriches the curriculum and broadens their experience, preparing them for the future. The partnership provides a powerful illustration of the education continuum to colleagues, parents and carers.

We have had a lot of success with the School-College Partnership, with many pupils continuing their studies at Coatbridge College. We hope to sustain the partnership into the future as it goes from strength to strength.
