It’s May!!! The year 2019 is passing by faster than any previous year, ever. (?!) There’s still so much to do. We need to elect a new board; volunteers required. Serving on our guild’s board has changed some-what. Next year, we will not have evening meetings. AND THE NOMINEES ARE!!!!! Oooooor should we say, please come on down.

President, Debbie Garner President Elect, Lisa Patterson

Below are the biographies that have beensubmitted to date:

2019—2020 CPQG Officer Nominee

Membership—Cathy Price

I am a Texas native. I have been quilting since I was a teenager. I enjoy traditional patterns, but like to

change them up some. Being on the Board has been enjoyable and a great way to meet people.

President - Debbie Garner

Debbie has been a member of Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild for six years. She has served as workshop Chairman elect, workshop chairman, and is currently serving as president elect. Debbie has been quilting for about 20 years after studying fashion merchandising and textiles at the University of Arkansas. She owned a quilt store in Shreveport Louisiana before moving to Houston. She appreciates the support she is receiving from the guild as we all look forward to a prosperous new year for the guild.

Secretary - Diama Cortez

My name is Diama Cortez and I am running for the board position of Secretary for the term September 2019

thru August 2020.

My mother taught me to sew doll clothes when I was 10 years old by hand then she showed me how to operator a sewing machine. Years later, I became fascinated with quilting books and patterns and I wanted to learn to

quilt, so in 1988 I signed up for a beginner quilting class which taught me to piece and quilt by hand.

I joined Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild in March 2018 and currently I’m the Secretary. I am also a member of the

Houston Modern Quilt Guild.

Program Elect, Linda Towle

As a Charter Member of Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild I have learned so much about quilting and made many

wonderful friends. In the past I have served as Treasurer and Librarian.

I took my first quilting class in 1981 where we made our own cardboard templates, cut our fabric with scissors

and pieced by hand. So glad that has all changed!

I love hearing about all the different aspects of the quilting world at our programs. I also enjoy learning new

techniques at our workshops.

May 1 local artist Glenda Wilder will present a lecture and trunk show entitled My Quilting Journey - I Mapped my Way and You Can Too. Glenda will share her journey from percale sheets, poly batting and templates made from plastic lids to today's great tools. While showing quilts that have marked her journey, she will share tips and tricks to bring your original designs to life.

May 16 our own Lisa Patterson will present Construction of People and Picture Quilts. Her Sat-urday May 18th workshop will be a full day. Details are available in the workshop section.

June 5 Rhonda Dort will present Quilting with Vintage Linens. Rhonda is a 3rd generation quilter who enjoys (among many quilt related activities) the process of embellishing vintage embroidered pieces. She loves searching through antique shops, flea markets and junk stores looking for vintage trims, buttons, needle work and linens. She also enjoys talking about her work and will share this information with us.

June 20 Dot Collins will present The Stories Behind the Quilts It will be followed by a workshop on Dresden Plate Construction. Details are available in the workshop section.

Suggestions are being taken for our August 7 School House which will involve demonstrations from guild members. If there is a specific technique you would like to learn or if you have a special skill you would like to share - please contact Joan Bell ([email protected]).

Workshops by Darleen Patin & Judy Wolter

We currently have only 5 spots left for the Saturday, May 18 workshop with Lisa Patterson who will lead us through an all day workshop on picture quilt construction. She has two panel designs for us to choose from --- a face of Santa Claus and a landscape with fields of flowers in foreground and mountains in the background. Lisa is confident that anyone can learn these techniques with her guidance and instruction. Choose your panel when you sign up. Workshop fee is $25 paid to the Workshop Chair prior to class. Additional costs are the pattern--$5 for Santa and $12 for landscape -- and the kit cost if you choose to buy the kit. The cost of the kits: Santa Kit $15, Landscape Kit $20. Both the pattern and the kit are payable on the day of the workshop to the instructor. Please note that when you choose a panel, you cannot change it. The patterns are custom cut as are the kits and these will be cut as ordered. If you use your own fabrics rather than the purchased kits, the amounts are in the supply list below. To enroll in the workshop, please contact either Judy Wolter via text at 270-498-3633 or Darleen Patin via text at 713-304-2614 or by email. Enrollment deadline is May 15.

Below are photos of the workshop projects:

Workshops by Darleen Patin & Judy Wolter (continued)

June 20 Workshop will be Dresden Plates with a Twist with Dot Collins. This is an afternoon workshop from 1:00-4:00 at the church after our Guild meeting. Dot will show us this traditional block in a very different light. One of her favorite techniques is using the Dresden Plate pattern with the Stack and Whack method made famous by Bethany Reynolds. Of course, you can choose to do the plate in traditional fabric with traditional cutting, but the “stack” method will give you a lovely, unique block with a modern look. The Dresden plate blocks for the workshop quilt are made with 9, 40 de-gree wedges. Using traditional methods, you will piece 3 or 9 different fabrics for the wedges or you can use 9 repeats of a busy print fabric stacked (think Stack and Whack method) and then cut to create a “twisting, twirling” plate design. The blocks for the workshop quilt are 12” square separated by 2” sashings. Have a look at Dot’s quilts at her website: dotcollinsquilter.com. Click on Work-shops, then click on the highlighted “Dresden Quilt” title and you will see her designs. We will have a complete supply list at the May 1 and May 15 meetings. Cost: $30.

Happy Birthday to our May birthday group!!!

This month we are having an evening meeting, a day meeting, a charity sew-in afternoon session,

and a Saturday workshop.

• The evening meeting will be on May 1st. Our presenter will be Glen-da Wilder - My Quilting Journey - I Mapped My Way and You Can Too .

• Our day/business meeting will be May 16th and our very own Lisa Patterson will be presenting information on People/Landscape Quilts.

• Our afternoon session will be a Charity sew-in. Helpers are always needed and appreciated as we make backings, cut batting, and as-semble kits for our charity quilt program. These are always a lot of fun and a great way to get to know other Guild members.

• Our workshop this month will be on Saturday May 18th and Lisa Patterson will be showing those signed up how to make a Santa (people/face) quilt or a landscape quilt.

For additional information on any of these events, please check the newsletter at CPQGTX.org. Lots

of great information in there. Hope to see you there.

Discussion Points: Quilt Show 2020- Mark Towle reported the quilt show will be at Fort Bend County Fair Grounds Building ‘C’ and the down payment has been made. The quilt entry forms are due March 9, 2020 and on April 19 and 25, quilts will be turned in at his house and drop off times are to be determined. The judging dates will be May 5 and 6, but still need to be finalized. The 2020 CPQH Quilt Showcase will be on May 15 and 16. Mark made a proposal to change the by-laws by adding the concept of inactive members. (Try to encourage participation in guild activities, not just in the Quilt Showcase) Limit inactive members to 4 quilts in the show. Lisa Patterson said we should limit inactive members to enter quilts, it cost the guild to hang the quilts plus the pipe and drapes and they win many ribbons. Lisa said we need to define an active member by meet-ing attendance, charity and workshops. Cathy Price made a motion to define active member vs non-active member and Kay Paul seconded the motion. Mark said the by-laws need to be written so we need a new com-mittee. Committee members are Kay Paul, Barbara Young, Lisa Patterson and we need 3 guild members. Cathy Price said she will send an email to see if any member would like to volunteer for the by-laws commit-tee. Mark said this needs to completed by the May board meeting.
