Space is limited and training will begin on March 28,29, and 30, 2016 at the Pacific Islands Club. Par-ticipants who complete all 3 days of training will become certified National Parent Trainers of the Motheread Program. Participants must pre-register with your local CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Office-before attending training. Training Fee is $675 per person. Interested agencies willing to sponsor in-dividuals to the Motheread Institute, please contact Program Coordinator Viola Deleon Guerrero at

235-7319.

Using children’s literature as its basis, the Motheread/Fatheread curriculum teaches essential literacy skills utilizing real-life family contexts and adult roles. For a majority of adult students, the role of parent is highly motivating. Therefore, the training helps educators learn how to teach literacy skills that are essential both in the home and in the workplace. Institute participants receive a Teacher’s Guide that includes not only lessons designed for adults that can be used in their classroom, but sup-plements that parents can use in the home with their children, ages birth through elementary-school For classes where adult literacy gains are measured, CASAS Competencies have also been linked to each lesson. Participants completing Institute requirements will be awarded 2.0 CEUs from North

Carolina State University.

Training Topics

1. Teaching approaches and learning styles: individual assignments, small group work, lec-

ture, and discussion

2. Parents’ Role in Children’s Literacy Development: emergent literacy activities, reading

aloud, building vocabularies and concepts

3. Use of story: thematic analysis

4. Adult classes: use of parent education and literacy development curriculum, instructional

techniques, lesson planning, preparation, and presentations

5. Evaluation: authentic assessment, student goals, measuring student outcomes, using

standardized measures

6. Program implementation: start-up, recruitment and retention, program development, and

integration of curriculum into existing program structures and requirements Training for the 3rd Motheread Institute is made possible by the Northern Marianas Humanities

Council, the Bank of Hawaii Charitable Foundation, and other sponsoring agencies.

Debbie Occena Canete or “Deb’s” as she is affectionately known is an active Parent Trainer with the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Family Literacy Program since 2010. Debbie Canete was born and raised on Saipan. She is a loving mother to a handsome little boy named Dominic George Canete-Ealy. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education and has been working full-time as a teacher for the San Vicente Elementary School. When asked about why she loves volunteering with the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Program, she had

this to share: “ This program gives me an opportunity to reach my students and other kids to expose in different genres of books to love reading as an individual and to enjoy as a family through their parents.” In her spare time, Ms. Debbie Canete enjoys singing, reading, and cross-stitching.

Evangeline Espanola or “Vangie” as she is affectionately called, was born and raised in the Philippines. She is married to Renato Espanola, and they have one son Jether Austin Shyr Espanola. She continues to make Motheread/Fatheread a family affair by inviting her son Jether to participate as a volunteer on numerous sessions in the Story Exploring Class. Vangie has made Saipan her home for the past 12 years. She is an active CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Story Exploring Instruc-tor since 2010. She currently works for the Saipan Seventh Day Adventist School as a teacher, and she holds two degrees– BS/BA in Business Computer and Ac-

counting. When she is not volunteering or spending time with her family, Vangie can be found playing her favorite sport tennis. Certified Story Explorers such as Mrs. Evangeline Espanola undergo a 6-hour Story Exploring training based on the Motheread multicultural Story Exploring curriculum. This curriculum is designed for use with children ages birth through 11. It uses over 100 children’s books as the basis for instruction. The training helps adults build children’s reading and critical thinking skills. The take-home parent education materials are available in English and Spanish. The curriculum uses discussion questions and activities to foster creative thinking and problem solving skills, nurture a love of books, and aid in the development of comprehension skills. It includes a variety of language skill-building activities in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Story Exploring Instructors teach the children’s component in concurrence to the Adult Course. These vital partners are essential as they allow parents to attend

classes while their children (ages 4-11 years) are taught by a Certified Children’s Story Exploring Instructor. Thank you Parent Trainer Debbie Canete and Story Exploring Instructor Evangeline Espanola for all the hard work and commitment you do for the Moth-eread Program. We are truly blessed to have you both on our team!

Motheread®, Inc. is a nationally acclaimed private, non-profit organization that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues. Parents and children learn to use the power of language to discover more about them-selves their families, and their communities.

Motheread® offers classes for both the adults and children. In adult classes, participants learn to be story readers, writers, and tellers in a group structure that supports their own sense of worth and ability. These classes are appropriate for all adults, regardless of reading ability or prior educational experience. By teaching the “why” of reading rather than just emphasizing the “how”, clas-ses encourage parents to be reading role models for their chil-dren. For children, Story Exploring provides a structured envi-ronment for learning reading, critical-thinking, and problem
