Heart Institute Gala

“23 years ago, I have been asked by the Health Authority in HCMC to develop cardi-ac surgery program for children suffering from heart diseases. This lead to the development of the Heart Institute where we operate 1200 children per year.

Very soon, it appeared that a certain number of children, their parents, could not afford, and could not pay for the expenses of the operation. The good news about children suffering from heart disease, is that they can have 1 operation and be cured by this operation.

Be cured for the rest of their life.

So this is why I am happy to recognize your help and you should be very proud to support an organization like this, again keeping in mind that your contribution is essential.

100% of the money you give to the Heart Institute Gala goes to the operation of a child.”

Presentation of the Heart Institute and the CMI

The Heart Institute was created in 1992 by Pr. Alain Carpentier and Dr Duong Quang Trung who was at the time director of the Health Department Services of Ho Chi Minh City. Its mission is to offer high-quality care to Vietnamese patients suffering from heart diseases, but especially children.

Considered as a reference in cardiac surgery in Vietnam, a lot of people go to Ho Chi Minh to consult the Institute’s cardiologists. Unfortunately a number of fami-lies cannot afford to pay for surgery. A department of Social welfare was there-fore created to cover the cost of the operations for the most destitute Vietnam-ese people. The CMI (Centre Médical International, or International Medical Center) has been created in parallel of the Heart Institute as an outpatient clinic to provide interna-tional standard comprehensive and specialized medical services. The particularity of the CMI is that all of CMI’s profit are dedicated to the Social welfare depart-ment of the Heart Institute that pays for destitute Vietnamese children to have cardiac surgery.

The Heart Institute offers surgery without any profits and CMI uses all his benefits to help deprived families.

Since the opening of the Institute, 4172 children have been saved thanks to the crea-tion of the two structures.

The Foundation brings its medical expertise and trains Vietnamese heart surgeons as well as the medical staff working in the Institute. It also helps to finance various structural projects, such as the extension of the Heart Institute.

Average cost for a cardiac surgery is about 3600$ depending on the disease, materials needed and post-operative treatment. The total amount can reach up to 7000 $.

Vietnamese Social security pay a part of the fee, as well as the family with in the limits of their financial resources.

Social investigation are proceed by Social Department of the Heart Institute to pay for the remaining fee, which can be between 20% to 100% of the total costs. In average, the remaining cost is about 2000$.

Why did we start organizing a Charity Gala?

To face the growing demand for deprived children’s surgery the Heart Institute and the CMI decided to go further, and to organize from 2011 an annual charity gala to raise more necessary funds.

Indeed, 30 000 children in Vietnam are still waiting to receive cardiac surgery to save their lives.

How do the Charity gala raise money?

100% of the money you give to the Heart Institute Charity Gala goes to the operation of a child.
