PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Every spring, when I change my wardrobe from winter to spring/summer, I make a
commitment that I’m going to wear shorts until at least Thanksgiving. I don’t think I’ve
ever made it through the month of October, but this year I not only went through
October and past Halloween, but made it to Election Day, November 7. In my
President’s Message last month I talked about how nice the weather was. But as
expected, the cold has descended upon us and it’s time for me to retire the shorts until
next year.
I’m noticing all the posts on Facebook about individuals here in the Northeast putting
their Corvettes away for the season - battery tenders attached and covers on. Like most
Corvette Club of Connecticut members, I realize that day will come, but not until after
our annual Toy Drive. My granddaughter, Madeline, has become my co-pilot on this
adventure and she’s already talking about it. She makes me laugh when we’re cruising
down I-95 with our State Police escort and she starts yelling about some non-Corvetter
who gets in our lane - especially if he happens to be driving a Mustang. This year I’ve
invited the Military Corvette Club to join us on what Dennis always refers to as a “feel
good” project. I hope we can set a new record with the number of Corvettes involved.
All you need to participate is your Corvette and a new unwrapped toy. We will be
making our charitable donation to the Connecticut Food Bank that same day, December
3, at McDermott’s. The rain/snow date is December 10. I really hope to see you there.
Also, our annual Holiday Party is in December. The date for this event is December 9,
from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Lester has again secured the Clinton Country Club as
our venue. The food is always outstanding and there’s always a surprise or two. This
year, as in the past, the Club will pick up part of the tab, so the cost to the members is
reduced. Please see Les Brown’s “Things To-Do List” in his weekly email for details.
Finally, a plug for the February monthly meeting. We plan on having a short business
meeting followed by a showing of the film “The Quest.” Briefly, it’s a terrific film about a
son’s quest to fulfill his father’s dream and to return an historic Corvette to LeMans. It
really is so much more than that but I guess you’ll just have to see it for yourself -
coming on February 6, 2018.
Peace,
Jack

CORVETTES AT CARLISLE – A WOMAN’S PERSPECTIVE
by Barb Uliano
We have heard Dennis Krajewski talk about Carlisle since the day Kenny and I joined the
Club. For Dennis, Carlisle is like Christmas morning for a kid. Kenny and I had talked
about going “someday.”
One day I happened to go on one of my favorite websites, Kim’s Gold Dust. (She carries
Corvette jewelry.) As her home page came up, headlines across the screen said,
“Corvettes at Carlisle.” Huh? “Someday” seemed to be a little sooner than later for me.
I Googled to find out how long the drive is to Carlisle, Pennsylvania - about 4.5 hours,
not too bad. Kenny and I decided to go and made our reservations.
Then the warnings from other women in the Club started: “You’ll only go once.” “It’s
boring for women.” “Three days is too long.” “The weather is HOT or there are torrential rains. One year there was a tornado.” “Something always happens to one of
the members and they are remembered forever in “that year’s story.” I wondered, did we make a mistake? Was a little “bling” worth it?
On Thursday August 24, Kenny and I jumped in our 2000 Magnetic Red convertible at
5:30 a.m. and drove to Heavenly Donuts to meet the caravan. There were five
Corvettes in the caravan, ranging in color and years. We picked up another member at a commuter parking lot by the entrance to I-84 in Danbury. WE GOT OUT OF OUR CAR
AT 12:45 p.m., seven plus hours later, at the hotel!
We drove to the fairgrounds, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Kenny attended seminars and talked to vendors. I went to Kim’s Gold Dust Booth (purchased my bling) and
walked around. (I never saw everything). When we got tired or wanted to get away from the crowds, we retreated to ‘The Tent”. Ah, the tent! What a wonderful oasis!
There were snacks, drinks, chairs, and camaraderie. It was a great spot. One gentleman stopped by and asked how we got such a good spot. For me, the best part
was that it was located on Barbie Boulevard.
In closing - The drive may be longer than expected, but you can expect a scenic route, and there’s no better scene than six Corvettes in a caravan. Other drivers noticed our
caravan and they waved, honked, or otherwise acknowledged the row of special cars.
We had great weather; I understand it wasn’t typical. But more important than the
weather were the people: the socializing, the sharing of meals, the memories, and the stories.
We thought our story would reach the top spot for 2017, but we lost out to another
member’s speeding ticket.
As Kenny says, “We thought the fun would be the car but it was the Club members who have made all the difference.”

ENGINEERING – MADE IN AMERICA AND TRUSTED TO
PERFORM – by Rhonda Forristall
It was perfect weather for a Corvette cruise. Fourteen members of Club Corvette of CT
arrived in Charlestown, NH, for a guided tour of Whelen’s New Hampshire plant. As we
made the last turn onto the NH campus, what an impressive sight to see - the emerald
green manicured lawns, the colorful fall foliage and the seven buildings that now
encompass the plant. Don called it a self-sufficient city since Whelen employees built
those seven structures, created the lampposts, made the trays that their products are
stored in and even made the napkin holders in the cafeteria!
Special parking had been set aside for the Corvettes and our guides were waiting for us.
We were all ushered into the corporate meeting room to meet and to obtain our safety
glasses. Jerry and Tyler were knowledgeable guides and I doubt I can adequately share
their expertise with you in this story. It was clear with every word they spoke that they
were not only experienced employees but they loved
working at Whelen Engineering.
We purposely planned this tour on a weekday to
experience the innovation of these machines in action.
Whelen takes great pride in creating a totally American-
made product. All of the components are either made by
Whelen or come from U.S. based companies. We started
our two-hour tour in the sheet metal fabrication plant
watching robotic machines cut, bend, and shape
components for the lights. There is no waste. As pieces are cut out of the metal sheets,
remnant pieces, or “skeletons,” are collected and sent back to be recycled to create new
metal sheets.
Pag
e10
Many of the metal parts become powder coated on-site. This elaborate air controlled
environment allows the powder to cover the metal and the waste to get sucked up to be
reused. But more importantly, there is a safe environment where the employees are not
in a position to inhale any of the powder or have a need for protective gear.
The company is now able to create its own circuit boards and has the only horizontal
board assembly line in the world. Most are vertical and Whelen found that too difficult to
capture waste products and recycle. Engineers then created this horizontal system that
captures waste products for recycling and contains biohazardous fluids in a system
where they don’t come into contact with employees. This is a highly creative self-
sufficient system that protects both employees and our environment.
The injection mold machines are the most colorful as they suck up colorful plastic pieces,
heat them, and then insert the liquid into molds to create the lenses for the lights. These
lenses can be clear, amber, blue, red, or even purple.
That is only the beginning
of the story. While the
focus of the plant is to put
out the best product
possible with the least
amount of waste, Whelen
also uses technology to aid
their employees. Ergonomic
work stations are utilized
throughout the building.
One station uses a lift to
bring the work up to the
employee’s height, then
takes the full trays away.
No bending or lifting is
involved. There is a robot
which then wires the
circuit boards twisting and
turning wires constantly and eliminating carpal tunnel injuries. While our guides talked
about the innovation of robots they were quick to say that no jobs were lost to
technology. Employees were either trained to run the machines or retrained to work
somewhere else in the factory. In fact, Whelen Engineering is very proud to say they
have never had a lay off or experienced downsizing in its history. It was evident in the
employees that we spoke to that they were all well trained and happy to be working for
Whelen Engineering.
Every building in this complex was built and maintained by Whelen employees. They
have created a well-lit, temperature-controlled environment that is clean and well
maintained. It was especially noted by the women on the tour that there was no grease,
oil, or foul smells encountered on the tour. Each building has its own spacious cafeteria.
Pag
e11
Coffee and tea are provided for all employees and there are refrigerated units with glass
doors for those bringing their own lunch to work. Vending machines are restocked daily.
Joyce Baiardi and I compared our cafeterias at Middlesex Hospital and Yale to these
rooms and these were far cleaner and more comfortable than the hospital environment.
As we compared notes over salad, pizza and soft drinks, it was clear everyone was
impressed with the cutting edge technology and the attention to every detail that goes
into Whelen’s products.
Rich had to end the day with a stop at Allen Brother’s Farm Stand. We all went
home with fresh baked pies for dinner. It was a sweet end to a very enjoyable day. Lucy
Kreho said she liked it better than a car show but maybe that’s because they named one
of the robots Lucy.
This sign was posted in the cafeteria and exemplifies the Whelen motto:
WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO?
We do it to make sure everybody goes home at night.
The officers in uniform, and the civilians they serve,
The firefighters and EMS workers, and the people they save,
The builders of the roads, and the drivers in the rain,
The city facing a flood, and the family facing a storm,
The pilots in the cockpit and every soul on board,
We do it by building every part of every product ourselves.
By staying one step ahead for our customers,
And picking up the phone when they call.
We do it with employees, who work second jobs as first responders,
We know that when lives are on the line, what we make makes a difference.
So we design until its right.
We test until it’s proven.
And we don’t ship until it’s ready.
That’s when we go home at night.

OCEAN CITY WEEKEND – IT’S A THREE-PEAT – by Rhonda Forristall
This is Club Corvette’s 13th year of participation in this fabulous getaway. But many of
you probably don’t know what this weekend entails. So sit back and let me take you on
a journey. Free State Corvette Club hosts this weekend with proceeds going to benefit
the Spina Bifida Foundation. Spina Bifida is the most common birth defect in the United
States and affects predominantly white and Hispanic babies. It is a condition that occurs
when the baby’s spinal cord does not close completely during the formation of the spine
and it’s associated with genetics and environmental influences such as low levels of folic
acid in the diet.
Over the past thirty years, Free State Corvette Club has built relationships with these
children and hosts about ten families each year at this event, providing hotel
accommodations and meals. It is heartwarming during the Fun Show to see these kids
in their wheelchairs or with their little pink crutches going around looking for their
favorite car. They then present their awards to the winners at the Awards Banquet on
Saturday night. During the Boardwalk Parade these kids ride in the Corvettes at the
head of the parade. Any Corvette participant can volunteer for this honor and Bill Bretski
and Larry Arpin have volunteered several times over the last few years.
But this is only one aspect of the weekend. Participation in the Show is limited to 300
cars, sorted by generation and modifications. The Fun Show is judged by entrants only
but you can vote for your own car. Then the Free State Governor chooses a Vette in
each class to receive the Governor’s Award. Win Kelly Chevrolet is the Club’s primary
sponsor and their owner presents their trophy. Best of Show is determined by the local
GM representative.
There was a little drama this year at the Fun Show. Sue Wadyka entered her C-5 into
the Fun Show and who do you think was parked just one car over? The very car that
beat her at Carlisle by a half point. There was another car that had a lot of graphics and
Pag
e13
the cutest little dog in the car. The dog was getting a lot of attention. Competition is stiff
at this show. Sue was sure there would be no award for her this year. There were 56 C-
5’s in Sue’s class! Think about that compared to our show or any of the local shows we
attend. Judges are not looking for the cleanest car; they are looking for the car that
appeals to them. To add to Sue’s stress, it kept raining. Sue had to wait until Saturday
morning to clean her car. Rags down at 10 am! That doesn’t leave much time for prep
since judging is over at 12 noon. Then you wait for the results at the awards dinner at 8
p.m.
While all of this was going on there was a multi-faceted Rallye in which to participate.
Rich and Rhonda, and our Florida contingent, Russ and Claire Grim, signed up for the
Rallye. There were almost 400 cars in the Rallye with participants looking to play Poker
High, Poker Low, Scrabble or the Gimmicks. At the starting line we are given a set of
driving directions which would take us on a two-hour tour of the countryside. At each
stop we drew a card or a scrabble tile. In between, we were asked to answer questions
about things we passed on the road. There have been no divorces recorded as a result
of this event.
This year Club Corvette of Connecticut was represented by Bob and Sue Wadyka, Lucy
and Ed Kreho, Ernie Betulia, Sharon Tosetti, Rhonda and Rich Forristall from
Connecticut. Russ and Claire Grim and Keith Murphy of our Florida division joined us on
Thursday. It was great to spend time with old friends. (They are all well and enjoying
Florida. There were no problems from the hurricanes for either of them to report.)
So is the suspense killing you yet? Are you sitting on the edge of your seat? Who won?
Well I’m getting to that. But first the stats - the numbers are staggering. Free State
registered 755 cars! This encompassed 75 clubs from 21 states AND Canada and 1,300
people. Is it any wonder that Free State has donated more than one million dollars to
Spina Bifida over the past 30 years! They never have a bad year as all registration
money and event clothing money is collected up front. The event runs rain or shine - it
simply doesn’t matter - and they do this with only 150 club members. Keith thought
perhaps he would take longest distance traveled award this year with 1,177 miles but
NOOOO. The longest distance award went to the couple from Arizona, second place
was Michigan.
Russ and Claire were big winners this year with a 20 point
scrabble word GEEZ. Both driver and navigator receive
trophies. Then Claire won a raffle basket full of wine bottles
and glasses. It just barely fit in the car.
Pag
e14
Then we waited through the Governor’s Awards and the car
that beat Sue at Carlisle in the C-5 class. But it was a
Three-Peat! Sue won first place in her class for the third
year in a row! Congratulations!
Now, I’ve spent a lot of time talking about the
show. However, it’s not about the show. We
are at the beach! The white sandy beaches
stretch for miles. Ocean City is a peninsula so it
boasts both Atlantic Ocean and bay side
beaches. Our hotel rooms faced the ocean and
the sunrise. Most of our favorite restaurants
face the bay with spectacular sunsets. We were
located right on the
boardwalk and the shopping
(SALES) are quite enticing.
This year there was a kite
design and flying
competition going on while
we ate lunch. The talent
and synchronization of
some of these people is
amazing.
The home of the horses of Asseteague on the National Seashore is just around the
corner. Then there is the casino just down the road. There are reports of Ernie, Sharon,
Lucy, Ed, Sue and Bob finding some luck there as well. Despite the fact that the sun did
not make an appearance all weekend it was warm and a good time was had by all.
I hope more of you will consider coming with us next year.

LAM AND RIA VIORES GET THEIR KICKS ON ROUTE 66
by Lam Viores
We started our Route 66 adventure in St. Louis by
going to the top of the Gateway Arch, followed by a
paddle boat ride up the Mississippi River. (This was
the second big trip in our new 2017 Grand Sport. The
first was a jaunt to Hilton Head Island in June, a day
after the car was delivered.)
Our next stop was for a Concrete Custard at Ted
Drewes Frozen Custard, which opened in 1941 along the original Route 66. Delicious!
We then took a detour to Branson, Missouri, to visit friends and see the sights ("a
Disneyland for Country Fans.")
The Blue Whale in Catoosa, Oklahoma, beckoned us
with his smiling face as he floated in his own pond.
Next, the
Cadillac Ranch in
Amarillo, Texas,
was a sight to
see - ten vintage
Caddies half-
buried, nose
down in a dirt field. We met a guy whose buddy's
car is one of the ten buried cars! People come from
around the world to view and spray paint the cars.
We met a couple from Norway.
Pag
e16
Santa Fe, New Mexico, was the next stop, with an overnight stay at the historic La
Fonda On The Plaza, built on the highest point (7,199 ft.) along the original Route 66.
Arizona was full of beautiful, natural delights, including Walnut Canyon, Meteor Crater,
Painted Desert, and Petrified Forest. The side trip to Sedona was extraordinary in its
vast beauty. The Pink Jeep Tour was an unforgettable, exciting "roller coaster" ride on
and over the red rocks. We also stood on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, where "A girl
my Lord in a flatbed Ford slowed down to take a look at me!" Later, we stayed at a fully
restored historic railroad museum and hotel, La Posada, in the Albert Einstein Suite! The
trains ran right behind the hotel.
There were many more sights along the way, but we never made it to the end of the
road in Santa Monica. We drove to San Diego to visit friends instead.
The Interstates were wide open in three western states with a 75 mph speed limit. Ria
got stopped for speeding in Oklahoma, but only got a warning from the "boy cop" who
really wanted to get a better look at the car.
Our Vette now has 11,000 miles on it and performed beautifully throughout the trip. The
whole experience took us five weeks and we had a ball! We really "got our kicks on
Route 66." Try it, you'll like it!

7:00 PM – We will have a showing of the movie – The Quest – this is a 90

A vision born in youth
Nurtured into adulthood
Cut short by heartbreak!
This is a film about the Corvette that won its class at LeMans in 1960. Through
historical footage, The Quest reveals what happened to each of 4 Corvettes that raced
that year and then were lost for decades. Chip Miller of Corvettes at Carlisle set out to
find and acquire the #3 class winning Corvette. The hope was to restore the car and
return it and its driver, John Fitch, to LeMans for the 50th Anniversary of the win.
When Chip's plan was tragically derailed, his son Lance took charge of the program and
fulfilled his father's dream!

IT’S OFFICIAL: 2019 CORVETTE WILL INCLUDE A
ZR1
November 8, 2017
Rumors have been circulating that the Corvette ZR1 would be making a return for the seventh
generation, and those rumors were confirmed on Wednesday when the December 2017 cover of Car and
Driver was leaked, showing the 2019 ZR1 in all its glory. This leak was followed by a teaser video on
Corvette’s social media channels giving a very sneak peek of an unidentifiable car, and the date of 11 -
12-17.
The Dubai International Motor Show, scheduled for November 14-18, has been rumored to be the spot
the ZR1 will make its official debut.
The magazine’s cover boasts 750-horsepower in the LT5 engine and quite noticeable is a new rear
wing, providing much needed downforce. While pricing has yet to be release, speculation is that it will
start just above $120,000.
The car has an Eaton supercharger, a bigger blower than the LT4s but the same drivetrain (either seven -
speed manual or eight-speed automatic) as the Z06 according to the Car and Driver article. Other
features mentioned in the piece include front wheels that are a half inch wider, same standard and
option rubber as the Z06, and brakes that are the same as the Z06’s optional rotors and calipers with
new pads.
Rumor has it the LT5 will shoot flames from its exhaust. Thanks to a new fuel-delivery system, which
uses both port and direct injection. This also creates louder exhaust.
The ZR1 is expected to hit 60 mph in less than three seconds, and have a quarter mile time of less than
11 seconds… topping out beyond 210 mph. It’s lap time at VIR is said to be 2.5 seconds quicker than
that of the Z06.

2019 CORVETTE EARLY PRODUCTION ANNOUNCED
October 12, 2017
Well, that was quick! Rumors have been confirmed that production of the 2018 Corvet te will cease
early for the model year. The last date to order a 2018 Corvette is November 16, and the last week of
production for the 2018 model year is the week of January 22. The 2019 model year will begin rolling
off the line the week of January 29, 2018. Orders for the model start November 30. (whew we need a
calendar for all those dates!)
Right now, planned volume for the 2018 Corvette is just shy of 9,700 units, making it one of the
shortest model years.
No major changes are coming for 2019 as models, colors and options from 2018 will carry over (sans
the Carbon 65 Edition). Less than 100 65 th Anniversary Carbon Editions are remaining of the 650 cap
for 2018. A new order guide for 2019 will be released on November 20.
Sebring Orange (G26) can now be ordered, and a small ramp up of the new hue begins the week of
December 11 (in the new paint shop, we might add).
But what about the new paint shop? Production at Bowling Green Assembly starts back up November
6, and at that time the ‘basics’ (Black, Arctic White, Torch Red, Corvette Racing Yellow) will begin
rolling through the state-of-the-art paint shop. Tintcoats will follow the basics at a later date (Admiral
Blue, Blade Silver, Cyber Matrix Gray, Long Beach Red, Sebring Orange and Watkins Glen Gray.
As for the quality of the new paint – we’re told customers will not be disappointed. Some even tout the
quality to be better than the crème de la crème Cadillac paint.
And as for a “C8” mid-engine Corvette, no official word has been received announcing the highly
anticipated model. But it has been photographed quite a bit lately. Perhaps it’s GM’s way of teasing us
just a little bit!
Next year’s Michelin NCM Bash will certainly be colorful when GM takes the stage to present on 2018
and 2019… and we know you’ll want to be there to ask questions and be in the know.
