Family History

The course is aimed at people new to the world of genealogy and in collaborationwith the local Library Service you will have the opportunity to seek out yourancestors.

The course will explain the types of starting information that you will need andthen take you through the process of using the Internet to access online ancestryservices. We will look at the range of resources available to you including Censusinformation and Births, Marriages and Deaths records that may help your questlooking into who your ancestors were and something about where they lived andwhat their occupations were.

The course documentation contains hundreds of links to useful websites andcontacts to organisations that may be able to assist you in your studies.

Free English and MathsqualificationsIf you are reading this you areprobably interested in improving yourskills in English and/or Maths but arenot sure how to go about it.

With busy lives, work and families toconsider, CLS has looked at how wecan support you and we believe wecan find the right route to learning foryou.

Firstly, you will need to attend anassessment workshop (held onTuesdays and Thursdays) where wewill help identify the level that is bestfor you. You will then be registeredfor the class that suits you for timeand location.

ITQ3 Certificate

CLS is accredited to offer Level 3 qualifications (ECDL Advanced) and this yearwe are introducing an based on the internationally renownedECDL qualifications. If you have already completed the ECDL Levels 1 and 2 youcan “top-up” with two further units at Level 3 plus a mandatory unit. Two top-upunits will be selected from Word, Spreadsheets or Presentation Graphics.

Photo Editing

These 10 week courses using Photoshop Elements are very popular and classesfill VERY quickly - so don’t delay or you may miss out!

Courses are run at three levels, beginner, improver and introductory award. Allthe courses are based on Photoshop Elements software. In beginners you willbecome familiar with the basic tools of photo editing, applying them to a set ofimages which we provide. You will also have the opportunity to practice on someof your own images. The improvers’ course develops those skills further andoffers the chance to be more creative in using multiple images and text. Progression to Level 1 and above

Having achieved an Entry Level qualification, your option is to advance to theLevel 1 course for which we offer ECDL Essentials. For Level 1 and above testingis a bit more formal and generally requires you to work without notes or handouts.Your teacher will discuss with you when you are ready to sit the tests so you canprogress at your own pace within the hours available.

ECDL Essentials Level 1To help with the move into the more formal testing in ECDL, you will start with asix week “ ” which are held at the same times as the full ECDLcourses so there is no problem in switching days or times. Subject to agreementbetween you and your teacher you will then move into the formal course whichlasts up to 65 hours. The “Preparing for…” course gives you a flying start to theformal course. Your progress can also be much faster if you choose to workusing the online resources between class sessions. There are no set dates fortesting as it is down to when you are ready. If you are interested in a career inchildcare then we may have thecourse for you. We are running twonew childcare programmes fromJanuary 2013:

CACHE Level 2 Certificatefor the Children and YoungPeople’s WorkforceThis qualification is designed to helpyou build the knowledge and skillsneeded when working with childrenand young people, birth to 19 years. Itcovers a diverse range of job rolesand occupational areas. You arerequired to be in a work placement fora minimum of a day a week in order tocomplete this qualification if you arenot already employed. You canusually complete the Certificate in ayear or less.

CACHE Level 3 Diploma forthe Children and YoungPeople’s WorkforceIf you want to work at supervisorylevel then this qualification is aimed at0 -19 years. It covers a diverse rangeof job roles and occupational areasand is split into three pathways: EarlyLearning and Childcare, Social Careor Learning and Development SupportServices.

It is also an essential qualification forall practitioners delivering the EarlyYears Foundation Stage.

We also offer adult apprenticeshipsand work place qualifications so if youdon’t find what you are looking forgive us a call and we may be able tohelp.

Health and Social Carequalifications - NEWAre you considering a career in healthand social care? Do you want to gaina nationally recognised qualification? Ifso we may be able to help you. Entry Level 3 Life and Living Skills(L&LS) courseThis qualification has five elements each of which is assessed by building aportfolio of material which is then submitted for your final certificate. It includesunderstanding the basic elements of computer systems, using the Internet ande-mail plus some text editing work and simple use of media programmes (photoediting). The course may take up to 125 hours. It is longer than the FunctionalSkills course because of the wider range of material.

BCS Digital Skills (current)This course has seven elements which cover a wide range of typical day-to-dayuses of computers. The five units are audio and video software, digital photography,digital music and digital media plus social networking are all covered in this newqualification. We have just finished our first year of running this course andlearners have been very enthusiastic about the course and the content. All theresources are available online which enables you to progress at your own paceand you are able to work outside the class times when and where it suits you. There are three possible routes, Functional Skills, Lifeand Living Skills or Digital Skills. Depending on your personal needsyou can choose the route to suit you. Note that each choice has itsown session time.

Functional SkillsThese courses cover the basics of using the Internet and e-mail and you willhave an assessment session toward the end where you will be given a task toproduce a simple leaflet or poster which will need you to find information fromthe Internet and also include details that will be provided through an e-mail.The course may take up to 45 hours.

CLS offers you a range of opportunities to develop your skills withcomputers.

You can be a complete novice, never havingtouched a computer or laptop before andwanting to know just how to get started, orsomeone already using computers but wantingto achieve qualifications in thetypical workplace computingskills. We can offer you coursesat a range of levels and withthe option of progression fromnovice to a Full Level 3Certificate.

You will develop your skills under the guidanceof our experienced teachers, well skilled insupporting you as you learn the effective use ofcomputers in a wide range of situations. Enjoythe experience and benefits of learningalongside a new group of friends. Learning inthis way not only develops your computer skillsbut builds your own self-confidence. In afriendly environment, learning becomes anenjoyable activity and you will progress somuch more quickly.

Courses typically last from about five weeks to 48 weeks dependingon course content and level.

All our main courses are now supported with online resources thatassist you to extend your learning beyond the classroom sessions bygiving you 24/7 access to course materials and discussion forumswhere you can pose questions and share thelearning experience with your class peers. Thisalso gives you a link to the course teacher soyou don’t have to wait a week to get ananswer to problems you hit betweenclasses.

Family LearningProgramme

What better way to return tolearning than by supportingyour child’s learning?

With Family Learning programmes,you learn about the schoolcurriculum for a wide range ofsubjects and look at the ways inwhich your child is taught at school.This gives you the knowledge andconfidence to further help your childdevelop and progress at school, aswell as a variety of fun and freeactivities that you can do with yourchild at home.

Family Learning programmes arefriendly and practical and will involveworking with other parents for thefirst part of the session and with yourchild for the second part of thesession. Some courses aim tosupport the whole family with literacyand numeracy and others coverspecific aspects of the schoolcurriculum. You may have thechance to complete Scienceexperiments with your child, designand build for Technology or create aStory sack with puppets to use athome.

Learning together is a greatopportunity to show your child thatyou value their learning and has beenshown to have a positive impact ontheir development. Learning as anadult can lead to increasedconfidence, skills and furtherqualifications.
