(Richard Han) A FIVE-MINUTE Flash Mob took place at the busy shopping mall, Uniwalk, in Bao’an District on the afternoon of Jan. 7, attracting over a thousand residents to stop and watch the show that was orga- nized by the district’s publicity depart- ment and civility office to promote a civilized lifestyle. The Flash Mob was choreographed around a song named “Bao’an Has Hip-Hop,” a 90-second rap song with lyrics adapted from the code of con- duct for civilized behavior, such as giving seats to vulnerable groups on public transport, not littering on the street, obeying traffic rules and so forth. Combined with elements of classical music, Hip-Hop and Flash Mob dancing, the performance attracted many people to watch and take photos. A woman living in Bao’an District happened to be shopping at the Uniwalk mall with her child and husband when the Flash Mob took place. She said that the rap song was very catchy and even her 5-year-old son started to hum the song after only listening to it once. A young man, surnamed Guo, was walking inside the mall with his girlfriend when the performance started, and the couple could not help moving to the front to enjoy the Flash Mob. “I often hear that song on buses in Bao’an, but it was very surprising to see that the publicity depart- ment had organized such an interesting Flash Mob,” said Guo. Wu Shenglan proposed the popular Flash Mob. He said that the young generations are very fond of Hip-Hop culture, so the team thought that using the songs would make the code of conduct more interesting and easier to remember than just asking people to obey them. Li Lizhi Li Lizhi B AO’AN District has proposed to build 37 new parks and upgrade 95 parks by 2020, bringing the total number of parks in the district to 207 and the per capita park area to 17.5 square meters. The move to accelerate the construction of parks under- scores the district’s long- term objective of becoming a district of parks. At pres- ent, parks in Bao’an are embracing diversification and an overall upgrade. In 2017, Bao’an built three new parks and renovated eight. The area of recently added and renovated parks has reached 365,510 square meters. Another three new parks and 17 park-upgrading projects are under way. In order to meet citizens’ increasing demand for quality parks, the district’s urban management bureau has proposed to upgrade the quality of the existing parks in the old town. A citizen, surnamed Miao, who is a senior resident living in the district, said that since the launch of building a civilized city, he has seen a significant improvement in the behavior of visitors in the places he frequents, such as Xin’an Park, Lingzhi Park and Baocheng Square. In addition, the district has also strengthened the man- agement of parks. According to law enforcement officers in Haibin Square, citizens have developed the habit of not littering in the square, but they are still not fully aware of other behaviors that may cause danger to others. Thus, more officers have been dispatched to give reminders and keep the parks in order. To mobilize the enthusi- asm of park-maintenance enterprises, the district hosted a park industry skill contest last December, which included greening and pruning, cleaning public toilets, and extermi- nating pests. The move was also aimed at encouraging citizens to have good man- ners and to participate in the maintenance of parks. According to the head of the district’s park manage- ment center, a number of measures have been taken to continue to improve the quality of parks. These mea- sures consist of rectifying illegal behaviors, providing clean public toilets, setting up garbage classification facilities and offering vol- unteer services, as well as conducting regular and thorough sanitation inspec- tions. The two coaches, named Paul and Stuart, are well-known youth soccer trainers in Europe and have won a hand- ful of prizes for training teenage soccer players. They have returned to the U.K. after their one-month on-site training program in Bao’an and are still remotely training five school teams in Bao’an. Paul and Stuart recently talked with the Bao’an Daily by video chat, recalling their life and work in Bao’an as interest- ing and unforgettable. Interactions with the young soccer players were Paul and Stuart’s best memories, according to the two coaches. During the training, many young kids were fond of teaching the two foreign coaches to speak Chinese, which made the soccer coaches interested in learning Chinese in their spare time. The coaches picked up some simple instructions in Chinese and started to interact with the kids using simple Chi- nese words, which would always make the players laugh. Although the kids were naughty some- times, they were very serious when the coaches were explaining professional tactics, according to coach Stuart. In his eyes, the kids’ vitality can help them bring out more energy during soccer games. The European coaches also got along well with their local counterparts in Bao’an, which left some unforgettable memories with them, and Chinese food is Paul and Stuart’s favorite. When trying Chinese hotpot, the two coaches could not believe that putting all the food into a pot would result in tasty food, but they soon found their first impression was wrong, said Paul. Paul even started to like drinking Chi- nese tea after living here for a month. He bought a set of tea pots and cups before leaving for the U.K. Through WeChat, Paul and Stuart have passed along useful training resources, like photos and videos, to the local coaches.
