BILLY BARTONTHOSE WHO THINK the last of the great femalesingle trapeze stars have all but disappeared with theretirement of LA NORMA and PRINCESS TAJANAI suggest you RUN - don't walk - to Hoxie's GREATAMERICAN CIRCUS where a brilliant chip-off-an-aerial star of-the-past (Aerialetta: Ethel Jennier) isshining like a fine cut diamond in the circus firma-ment! The luminary to whom I'm referring is thesensational JO ANN JENNIER who performs thesort of high flying, suicidal trapeze act, I had des-paired of ever seeing again. Miss JENNIER rolls upthe web, does a back-balance spin on it, goes nextto the swinging trapeze upon which she executes aseries of heart-stopping, rope-buckling, rapid-fireankle catches climaxed by a free, forward divingONE HOCK drop without "cheating" by lockingthe lag! On top of this, the pert and vivacious JOANN rolls back down the web! How this remarkabletalent has remained hidden from the major indoorShrine dates (as well as others) is a mystery AND atragedy that must be rectified. As for the diminu-tive Miss Jennier, if she'll take my advice, she'll be-gin to accustom herself to being what she truly is- A STAR !!TO CATCH A THIEF (can be dangerous). Giantclown BUCK NOLAN spied a thief stealing a bicycleat a Florida shopping center, gave thase with histruck, cornered the culprit and led him to the ad-ministration office where, as they were waiting forthe police to arrive, the thief attacked Buck and cuthis face. Luckily the cops arrived in the nick oftime. Buck, who is a flea market freak, advises thatit was agent HOWARD SCHULTZ who first discov-ered the fire at the Rochester War Memorial thiswinter.

SNAPSHOTS: CAROLINE JACOBI has been wing-ing from one end of the country to another - start-ing in the East, flying West, back to the mid-west,down to the Southwest and back to the East. "It'sgetting to be a way of life," sighs Caroline....BILLYGUNGA, now with Hoxie's G-A, told me they have-n't had a day off since they closed the show lastfall until they reopened Apr. 2nd. They've beenplaying club dates and a string of Sports Shows.Billy's "glass balancing" act, by the way, is an orig-inal....Young BOB HANNIGAN, G-A office mgr.,spent 3 seasons with Circus Kirk....BILL HILL re-ports an excellent run of Christmas dates, producedand promoted in tandem with his son, Allen. BothAllen, and Bill's other son, Ted, are promoting forthe two Hoxie owned shows....Just because the Hox-ie Big Top Circus is for sale, don't think anyonewith the loot can just walk in and buy it! And Ican understand Hoxie's feelings. The circus was built

on one man's blood, sweat and tears, and he has nointention of seeing that which he created be des-troyed by another's indifference. "Nobody," Hoxiedeclares, "has put as much money back into hisshows as I have over the years." Which is true! Theonly reason Hoxie considers selling the show is be-cause as he puts it, "I'm tired."

When HEIDI GUTIS GROGAN flew to San Juan torecupperate from an operation, wouldn't you know,hubby JIM came down with a severe and very pain-ful ear infection!FRAGMENTS: CYNDY MIGLEY's beauty will havean extra glow when her Virgo baby arrives in Mid-September....KAROL BEROSINI (Veno'swife)dresses her birds up in • are you ready - feathers!G A R Y HENRY returned from Puerto Rico to wifeZOE ANN with a face like a lobster (from being inthe hot sun so long). He says be lost 20 Ibs, butI'll just have to take his word for it!....Nobody onthe G-A Circus seems to work as hard or as long asCharlie Meyer's wife, JESSIE....A Crandon Park Zoo(Miami) elephant gave birth to a 120 Ib , 3 ft. tallinfant. Handlers thought she was just gaining weight.Boy, were they surprised!....The "People" story(Apr. 4) on RBBB's DOLLY JACOBS was very nicebut a bit "unfair" of the writer to refer to LU ANNas the "older sister, a trapezist who performs with alesser troupe". Seems to me "lesser," like "beauty"is in the eye of the beholder!....PRINCE NAJVEZcelebrated half-a-century while with Circus Odysseyin Puerto Rico, marking his 43rd year as a centerring performer. It was a Gala Celebration.Circus Odyssey bandleader WILLY MARAMBIO is anut, but a delightful one. Enroute from Ponce to SanJuan the band bus pulled alongside the performer'scoach on the freeway and for several miles, seren-aded the performers with German Beer DrinkingMusic, while the performers raised beer cans in "pro-sit"! At the end of the concert Willy twirled histoupee aloft as their bus pulled ahead with a squealof tires and a cacophony of horn toots! ....If MAN-UEL RUFFIN and BOBBY GIBBS are competing tooutdo each other as "practical jokers", forget itboys. It's a tie VIVIAN (Scott) and RICK HAL-BROOK have moved from the farm to civilization!BITING THE HAND THAT FEEDS: BILL HILL,RICK PASCA and others, were standing under theG-A marquee cutting up jackpots when HOXIETUCKER displayed a very sore finger, explaining:"See that cut? I was rinsing my partial plate likeI've done hundreds of times when the damn thingbit me!"See you down the road, luvs...

Circus performers traveling with James Het-zer's circus staged a daring act on May 4th inthe midst of the swirling waters traveling ap-proximately 35 miles per hour in the town ofWelch, W. Va.

The Grace Memorial Hospital was caught inthe midst of the flash floods that hit the area.Water was already entering the hospital whena cry went out for help in moving the pa-tients to safety.

Walter Taylor, David Locke and Lee Maloneyrushed through the five-foot deep water to getto the hospital. Immediately, they went intoaction moving patients from the first floor tothe third floor of the hospital, cutting offelectricity to avoid fires, saving precious hos-pital equipment and preventing the oxygentanks from exploding.

Downtown Welch was 24 feet above floodlevel when three men were discovered ma-rooned at a gas station 100 feet from thehospital. Taylor rigged a hand-line to helpsave these men. One of the men, a 15 yearold youth, went into shock and released thehand-line. Thinking quickly, Taylor dove intothe freezing water and caught the boy just ashe was about to be hit by a treet floating withthe raging current. Taylor broke two fingers asa result.

The Hetzer Circus is traveling throughout WestVirginia and Eastern Kentucky. Acts with theshow include: Randon's Dogs; Mr. Bell, bal-ancing; Joe Jackson, Jr., break-away bicycle;

When Carson & Barnes came to Monroe (La.)on Mar. 17th the first units on the lot wereDorey Miller's travel trailer and the seat truckwith poles and sidewall, driven by Jim Silver-lake. This year each truck cab has a beautifullogo of the show's title on its sides. The semiunits are painted with red and white stripes,while the cabs are blue.

The cookhouse and mail, plus route cards arehandled by Jackie Moos. The show's manageris Gladys Black, while Jim Silver-lake is incharge of canvas and lot supt., with Don Carrtaking care of the animal dept.

The midway includes a pony ride, moonbounce, ape show, ticket wagon and marquee.There is also a candy floss stand and a minia-ture horse pit show.

The show carries four portable rest rooms,their own gas truck, and a tire truck and asemi for the mechanic's shop. The last twounits that follow the show are truck wreckerunits, each towing a cab to replace any thatmight break down enroute. Everything seemsto be in excellent shape.

The lot at Monroe was a tight one, but wason a main street. The sponsor did poorly thisyear and even failed to get the show's permitwhich cost them an additional $180.

Dorey is certainly to be congratulated as hehas one of the real circuses on the Americanscene these days. His advertisements are likethose of the old days and he has what he ad-vertises will be there. M. L. Dupont
