My approach to Landscape Architecture is Creative Problem Solving. The main objective in a design should be to address the issues associated with the space. I believe that a design should first and foremost be Functional. What makes Landscape Architecture fun is the many different routes you can take to reach a solution. I enjoy the Creativity that comes along with creating a place that is both Functional and Aesthetically Pleasing.

The Three Rivers Greenway Master Plan is a comprehensive plan focusing on walking and biking connectivity in the Covington, Oxford, and Porterdale communities. Working in conjunction with The Center for Community Preservation and Planning and Smart Growth Newton County, this plan was developed to bring a network of alternative transportation options to this growing community. By doing so we hope to make the area more attractive to potential investors and developers as well as creating a place where people want to live. The abandoned rail corridor circling to the north of downtown Covington offers a unique opportunity for trails, while at grade crossings will help reduce cost of construction.

Downtown Covington is the epicenter of growth and is the heartbeat of the community. Keeping this in mind we designed the Three Rivers Greenway with downtown Covington as the hub of the trail system. By doing so we are able to emphasize a strong city center providing residents with a sense of place and a community gathering space.

In recent years Porterdale has established itself as a major kayaking destination and currently serves as the end point of the Yellow River Kayak Trail. The kayak takeout as well as the adjacent Yellow River Park will become a major trail head along the rail trail.

The train bridge located just north of downtown Covington will feature a wildflower meadow and offer great views of downtown.

Campus + Community connection

The University of Georgia medical partnership building and adjacent parking lot is located at the corner of one of two major access points on the east side of the UGA campus. Due to its location and current use as a student parking lot some of the spaces were required to be kept in tact. The remaining space serves as a community lawn of sorts featuring areas for passive recreation as well as secluded space. The overlook and boardwalk serve to connect visitors with the river and the stormwater management practices on site. The object of this design is threefold:

•Manage stormwater runoff from parking lot and surrounding roads before reaching the N. Oconee River.•Provide seamless bike

and pedestrian connection between the UGA campus and the east side of Athens. •Create an inviting outdoor

space for students and residents to relax, play, and study.

The Sparrow’s Nest is a Christian ministry serving those in need in the Athens area. The ministry reaches out to people from all walks of life to provide them with anything from a hot meal and a bag of groceries to a shower and laundry facilities. They also hold daily Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and various children’s programs throughout the week. The goal of this project is to create a place where everyone feels welcome. We hope to create inviting versatile spaces that caters to the needs of the center; whether it be a Thursday afternoon lunch or a back to school block party. With the help of local volunteers and businesses we hope to give The Sparrow’s Nest a much needed face lift and allow them to better serve our community.

The proposed seating wall along the west side of the courtyard will address the current erosion issues while providing versatile seating for visitors . This will also create a raised planting bed to accommodate the updated planting plan.

Replacing the existing fence will help both improve sight lines and reduce noise associated with the busy fast food drive through next door. Screening the back wall with plant material will hide electrical boxes and, along with a new fence and additional planting give the space an inviting secluded feel.

Providing a variety of seating and congregation spaces will draw visitors into the courtyard and foster interaction and sense of community which is as the heart of The Sparrow’s Nest’s mission.

The pea gravel walk will enhance the aesthetic feel while allowing infiltration currently inhibited by the concrete slab walk. The pervious surface will also solve issues associated with root growth of the existing maple. The form of the path fits within the small space while creating a meandering feel and drawing visitors towards the back of the courtyard.

+Work Day #1

The Mill on Chase StreetThe Mill on Chase Street is a proposed mixed-use development located 5-minutes from downtown Athens and the UGA Campus. Anchoring the site is the train station, the main Athens stop on the proposed commuter rail line connecting Athens and Atlanta. The surrounding development will serve the daily visitors to the train station and residence of Athens. The Mill will feature retail and shopping space as well as a grocery store, community center and offices. The site will also hold apartment style student housing as well lofts, townhouses and traditional single family housing, all within a short walk of the train station and other everyday amenities.

+Anchors

The train station and grocery store will serve as the anchors which the development will be built around. By placing them off the main street visitors will be drawn into the site positively effecting the other businesses and creating a high density walkable core.

The use of road hierarchy gives visitors a visual cue of where they are in the site. The central boulevard is the main access to the site and is the spine which the development spurs from. The smaller residential roads give residents a more relaxed feel with reduced vehicular traffic.

The three historical buildings on the site are remnants of the former textile mill on the site and are the inspiration for the name of the development. The original facade of the buildings will be kept in tact to pay tribute to the site’s history. The two buildings to the west will have first floor retail space with loft style apartments above while the large building to the east will house the train station.

The site is designed around the central green space with density decreasing outward from the center and two main anchors. Commercial space is placed near the front of the site to draw visitors from the road while the residential lots become less dense as you move deeper into the site.
