CIAM Session #6: March 29, 2012

This Week: Chris Carey Chris studied Economics at The University of Kent. He was a graduate management trainee at HSBC, before moving to Economist at PRS for Music for three years. At PRS for Music he was responsible for analysing and interpreting music trends and providing economic insight to stakeholders and industry professionals. He speaks at various conferences, universities and has co-authored the ʻAdding up the Music Industryʼ publication. His other research interests include the live music industry, the issues facing investment in emerging artists and the role of government intervention in promoting the arts. He also manages two bands and runs a small record label

Since October 2011 Chris has been the Global Insight Manager at EMI Music. The new role will involve a combination of consumer insights, global market intelligence and working with partners across EMI Music and EMI Publishing. Carey is best known for co-authoring – with PRS chief economist Will Page - the societyʼs annual Adding Up the UK Music Industry report, which has become an increasingly important resource for explaining revenue streams for various sectors of the business – from live to publishing.

Last Week: Pat O’Mahony

Pat's a Dublin-based freelance TV and radio producer/director/presenter. His most recent RTE Radio 1 documentary is Twitter On Trial a unique experiment that, with the help of five experienced Twitterers and one complete Twitter newbie, attempts to put this 5 year old social networking service through its paces.

In 2010 he made two more Radio 1 documentaries, One Evening In July about his friend and colleague, Olan McGowan, who broke his neck in a diving accident in 1995 and has been a wheelchair user ever since, and The Forgotten Visit about US President Richard Nixon's little remembered visit to Ireland in 1970 which he witnessed as a young 9 year old.

In 2009 he made Pat's University Challenge for Radio 1, for which he spent a week in DCU while it was celebrating its 20th year as a fully fledged university - and where he himself studied for his Communications degree from 1983-'86.

Since returning after 11 years in London in 2009, Pat has produced Ireland's Biggest 'Hits' 2009 and Now That's What You called News 2010, two television programmes on our internet news search habits, with Coco TV for RTE 1.

During Pat's UK stint he presented an Irish-themed radio show on GLR (now BBC London); he was a reporter on the BBC's prestigious weekly Watchdog consumer TV programme; he produced Reporters At War, an Emmy-winning TV series for Discovery on the history of war journalism; he produced and directed films for Channel 4 and Five; and he briefly popped over to Dublin to present Witnness TV, 8 hours of live music from the two day precursor to Oxegen, for TV3; to produce the pilot edition of RTE television's The Panel; and to produce and present Second Generation, a series on six well-known second generation Irish in the UK, for RTE Radio 1.

Before departing these shores Pat was the producer/presenter of Access All Areas, a long-running series on the Irish music industry on RTE Radio 1, as well as a presenter/reporter on a variety of music (Feile TV, Dave Fanning Show, The Garden's Voice), current affairs (The Sunday Show, 5-7 Live, The Live Register) and general features (Head 2 Toe, Off Your Trolley, Gortnaclune '94, Options, Summer Express) radio and TV programmes for RTE. He also was a presenter on a UTV environmental series, Green Pages.

In his pre-broadcasting career, Pat wrote for the likes of Hotpress, In Dublin and The Dublin Event Guide and was the first full-time Entertainments and Publications Manager at NIHE, Dublin - now DCU! - Student Union.

CIAM Session #5: March 22, 2012

You have to put the effort in with social media Pitching

• What comes first when pitching for an idea? -‐ The idea or what they want • You will need to cold call for all things including – TV, Film, Music etc • Production companies are the main way in • You need to make yourself stand out from the crowd • It is easier to contact commissioners in radio over TV • Idea’s can be declined commission for a number of different reasons • Never assume that people will contact you again, always keep in contact with

them • Be aware of what else is going on, you don’t want to pitch an idea they have

already heard. • Be prepared for no’s

Can you protect ideas?

• You cannot copyright an idea • But you can get rewarded for just having an idea and having no other

involvement How do channels know what the others are doing?

• Everyone in the business knows each other • Different channels using different names and claiming they are completely

different ideas could use the same concept. Is there a better format for TV?

• Does competition between the channels make for better TV or is it all just becoming the same with different interpretations?

• More channels due to Sky and digital television could mean more chance of

getting commissioned but also leads to more competition

CIAM@posterous - a summary from last week on Posterous

How will changes to visiting artists new immigrations rules impact the entertainment industry? Non-EU artists temporarily visiting the UK for short visits will no longer have to go through the Points Based Immigration System. It is a response to concerns raised that the Points Based System was overly bureaucratic and inappropriate for artists coming for short periods of time to perform one off remunerated activity. http://www.danceuk.org/news/article/visiting-artists-new-immigration-rules-6th-april/

Scotland's music festivals show rapid growth Scotland's music festivals have almost trebled in the past six years. Live performances have become an important driver for Scotland's tourism industry. The figure of 185% earnings growth is almost four times higher than that for the UK as a whole. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-17459040

New graduates will have to work till 71 before qualifying for state pension Students graduating this summer can expect to wait until they are at least 71 before receiving a state pension. That is three years longer than under current plans. This is following a budget decision to link retirement ages to changes in life expectancy. http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2012/mar/24/state-pension-retirement-graduates?CMP=twt_fd

Own, bought & earned media evolves The title is a popular description for the different media “types” that brands operate in as well as deal with. This form of thinking has large implications on how brands need to revisit their media mix as well as their overall planning and budgeting logic. http://artojoensuu.wordpress.com/2011/02/06/own-bought-earned-media-evolves/

The European Commission examines UMG-EMI merger The European Commission investigation of the proposed merger of Universal Music Group and EMI Music's label interests has moved into its second stage, with regulators acknowledging anti-competitive concerns. A statement indicated that high hurdles would have to be cleared before approval. August 8th is the final decision deadline.

As you are all aware CIAM is approaching fast! The CIAM Brochure content is being decided, before everything is collected and it goes to print. The past years, third years have given some questions and their answers are printed in the brochures. We would like to do this as we think it will benefit everyone and its nice to hear about your time at LIPA. We have come up with three points of which have questions which we would like you to answer, My Arts Manager Placement; sum up, were it was? did you enjoy your time their? was it beneficial? My Future Career; sum up, what you will be doing when you leave LIPA? or what you want to do? were you want to be in the next 5 years? My Time at LIPA; sum up, what your time at LIPA has been like? you best and most memorable moment? These should be summed up in each part to two-three sentences each. There is an example of this from previous years if you wish to see one just ask myself or Maria. Please could you all answer these questions and send them back to myself or one of the conference team. The DEADLINE IS - 30th March 2012 It would be great if you all had a say in the brochure :)
