Ann Harrison – State of the Nation

Last week's CIAM session saw music lawyer Ann Harrison engage the class in a discussion about the current state of the music industry covering topics from all spectrums: from thinking about music's value and its business potential through piracy and the role of major labels, to contracts and deals for artists and their managers - and plenty more in between! A summary of the topics of discussion and questions raised follows...

3

The discussion centered around... ... the VALUE OF MUSIC and how people pay for it

... music being thought of as a BUSINESS, not simply as a creative output, in order for managers to seek jobs in the industry

...prosperous and influential companies like GOOGLE, FACEBOOK and YOUTUBE’s role in supporting music

... SUBSIDIES and pros & cons to music being subsidised by the government, following film’s example

... the role of the MAJOR LABELS and their usefulness in international distribution but also the danger in creating monopoly and mergers

...360 DEALS and share of publishing rights/ticket sales/merch: record labels’ interests and relationship with the artist

...VENTURE CAPITALISM and the PRODUCTION DEAL, as well as dangers to be encountered in each

...Having faith and belief in THE ARTIST, developing a unique artist self as good music will always find a market but also understanding the importance of MARKETING and creating a BUZZ

...LAYERS for earning money (merchandise, live shows, premium packages, syncing) and COPYRIGHT longevity

Ann Harrison cont.

What questions remain? Do we appreciate music's value, are we ready to pay for it and how?

Do we think of music as a business and have faith in the music industry or choose to revolve around notions of artists creating more music regardless of an industry being there?

How can or should major companies like YouTube, Google and Facebook help out the music industry and artists in gaining a fair share from the interest they are generating?

Should music be subsidised by the government?

What does it mean to be a successful artist/manager?

Do we accurately understand and address the role of major labels?

Are we wary of the difference in record label and artist’s interests?

Are we well-equipped and clued up on dealing with venture capitalists and engaging in production deals?

Are we innovative in thinking about our Marketing strategies and how do we go about creating a buzz around an artist?

Is there a future in syncing or is the practice slowing down?

What are different layers of revenue streams we can adopt or come up with?
