CHURCHES TOGETHER THOUGHT FOR MARCH Christian Stewardship in our place. We are lucky to be able to live in this environment BUT it does make us inclined to be overprotective and reactionary, particularly at the first hint of change. This can lead to a half-hearted approach to opportunities in our environment which can be deeply frustrating and counterproductive. An essential Christian spiritual principle is that as God’s people we have a stewardship for the place and community in which we dwell and anything we “own” we do so on a temporary basis for “We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out”. These principles applied to our situation in the Broads and the county of Norfolk remind us that we have a duty to those who come here for recreation (Tourists) and to those who grow up here and need jobs and opportunities without having to migrate away. In reality some of our tourist facilities are not as good as they could be. Taking cycling for example, our Bure Valley railway path is far from “top draw” compared with say “The Camel Valley Trail” in Cornwall. The Broads themselves, beautiful from the rivers are poorly accessible for walkers and general visitors. (Compare access to the River Severn or Thames.) Our footpaths are so difficult to find. (Compare the Leicestershire Wolds where footpaths are plentiful and marked out with large yellow topped posts from field to field.) The benefits of BeWilderwood for this area is a very good example of how a well-managed tourist investment can help this community with controlled access and economic benefits. A culture of welcome, encouragement and local creativity can make this a better place to live in and be welcoming to tourists and visitors. We need the economic and social benefits for the children of the area to be able to become rooted as adults. I am sure that our first reaction should not be to say NO, but to insist that economic, social and environmental improvements can come from well-conceived, well-resourced and well-managed projects. This is not just a political issue but a spiritual issue about the sustaining of Life – a profoundly vital message in Lent. Michael I hope this article may stimulate some debate – Comments will be welcome to [email protected] or [email protected] or via the Bridge website

Our monthly Family Service is suitable for all ages and includes activities for children. This month we have two such services – on Mothering Sunday and Easter Sunday. ST HELEN’S CATHOLIC CHURCH "The Three C's": get together on March 6th, and then on the first Wednesday of every month 10.30-11.30. The cost is still only 70p at the 'Old Original' for coffee, tea, cake and other 'morning goods' such as you never find in the shops now! The financial proceeds go to help charity; the social benefits are immeasurable. Fourth Wednesday Club: meets on Wednesday March 27th. A social club for 'Senior

Citizens' over 60 from 11.30 - 16.00 with a buffet lunch at 12.30 and tea in the afternoon; £2 per person covers all the costs and includes homespun entertainment and a raffle. "Children’s Church": looks at the themes in our weekly Mass, and works towards First Communion. It takes place in school term-time during the Parish Mass on Saturday evening at 17.30. Our ''Childrens' Church'' is popular, perhaps because our catechists are qualified teachers and are all CRB / DRS checked. Rooms available for hire: St Helen's has rooms available for hire at reasonable rates: several village organisations meet here on a regular basis. Centrally situated with excellent car parking, it is ideal for small bona fide meetings and gatherings of up to 30 people. Facilities for preparing light snacks and hot drinks are available (you bring your own refreshments). Please call 01603 782758 for further details.

FRIENDS OF WROXHAM CHURCH President: Right Reverend Graham James, Bishop of Norwich Charity no: 1107913 Our film for March is “QUARTET” – showing on Saturday 23rd March at 2:30pm and 7:00pm in Wroxham Church Hall. Directed by Dustin Hoffman, and starring Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Andrew Sachs, it surely cannot fail to be one of the great films of 2013! Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred are in a home for retired musicians. Every year, on 10 October, there is a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday and they take part. Jean, who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home and disrupts their equilibrium. She still acts like a diva, but she refuses to sing. Still, the show must go on... And it does. Plans for an “Evening of Words & Music” on 18th May in Wroxham Church Hall are well underway. This will be a friendly, relaxed social occasion and we are hoping that as many local groups and individuals as possible will get involved. If you are interested in helping or taking part, please contact Di Stagg on 01603 784214 or [email protected]. If you would like to join The Friends, get involved or have ideas for fundraising activities, please contact Val Ovenden on 01603 782466 or email [email protected].

MOTHERS’ UNION – WROXHAM BENEFICE BRANCH At the Members’ Day in February we heard all about the “Help Us Grow” campaign, which challenges every member to consider inviting just one other person to join us. Our aim is to nurture individuals, families and society as a whole by praying for relationships to be flourishing and loving, by campaigning for social justice and by enabling development of all kinds – economic, relational and personal so that family life is strengthened. We are very pleased that Marguerite Phillips, the new Diocesan President of the Mothers’ Union, will be coming to talk to us on Tuesday, 19th March about “Loving For Life”. Everyone (not just members) is very welcome to join us at 10:30 am at St Helen’s. Please contact Suzanne Barnett (782002) or Val Ovenden (782466) for more details, or to arrange lifts.

LIBRARY AND SCHOOL NEWS HORNING COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL The school’s Christmas Production held in December was very well attended with standing room only; the children performed magnificently. The pre-school’s Nativity was also very well attended; the children’s singing was excellent. Thank you to everyone to supported these events, particularly those parents who helped with costumes, scenery and refreshments. We would like to thank the traders of Horning who contributed to the Taste of Horning event, held in December, which resulted in the school receiving a donation from the proceeds of the raffle. This will be spent on outdoor resources as we look to increase outdoor learning opportunities for our pupils. Our curriculum theme for the Spring Term is Mind Your Own Business, focussing on what is involved in setting up and running a business enterprise. Class 2 will be visiting the catering section of Norwich City College to gain some first-hand catering experience with a view to setting up a parent’s café at the end of the term. Class 1 will be growing seeds for sale; we hope to arrange a visit to a local plant nursery to enable the children to see all the processes involved in raising plants. Pupils from Class 2 took part in a Netball Tournament in February with teams from all cluster schools competing; although our children did not win the tournament, they all played very well and enjoyed the experience. We will be holding our Easter Assembly in St Benedict’s Church on Tuesday March 26th at 2pm; all are welcome. If you have young children aged 2 and above and are looking for quality early years provision, we currently have spaces within our pre-school. Children are eligible for 15 hours funded early years provision in the term after their 3rd birthday, however funding may be available for some 2 year old places, please contact the school for further details on opening times and availability. We are once again collecting supermarket vouchers and Nestle Boxtops tokens; thank you to everyone for your continuing support of our school. Pam Carver, Tel: 01692 630470, [email protected]

CLUB NEWS WROXHAM FLOWER CLUB Our March meeting will be on Wednesday 13th March at the Wroxham Church Hall at 7:30pm. Our demonstrator will be Lee Berrill from Earls Barton. His theme will be “Into the Light” - Lee is a National Demonstrator, so it should be a special evening. Visitors always welcome. For further information, phone 782075.

ROTARY CLUB OF BROADLANDS A Wheelie Good Idea WheelPower is the national charity for wheelchair sport, providing opportunities, facilities and equipment, which enable disabled people to play sport and lead healthy active lives. To support this initiative, our local Rotary Clubs came up with the “Wheelie Good Idea” scheme to raise funds to buy new sports wheelchairs for young and newly disabled people in our area, to allow them to play sport and enrich their lives. The idea was that each of the 77 clubs in the local District would make a journey to a nearby club to share a meal and socialise. Members from this club would then travel to the next club to continue the fellowship relay. Each member was sponsored and the fun part was that their travel would be by any means other than by car. They could use trains, boats, tractors, roller skates and some even went in a wheelie bin. The Broadlands Rotary Club wanted to show that Rotary can be fun and donned fancy dress and cycled the distance to the Thorpe St. Andrews Rotary Club on a static exercise bike. Rotarians from other clubs joined in the fun and a meal. We were highly delighted when we received a cheque for £587 for the “Wheelie Good Idea” from the students at Broadland High School in Hoveton, who had raised the money from a non-uniform day. In all well over £1000 was raised, which will now be added to the £13500 raised so far in our local District, which will be spent solely on sports wheelchairs. It is thrilling to think that we are in a position to help and further the Paralympian movement that enthralled us so much in the Olympic arena. For more information about Rotary, contact Richard Mayer on 01603 715796. THE PROBUS CLUB OF BROADLANDS Due to unforeseen circumstances our meeting in January went without a speaker and so our President, John Smyth, bravely stepped into the breach and gave an impromptu talk on the subject of his career. John spent his working life mainly in administration at the Colonial Office in London, and then abroad initially in the Colonial Service and finally in the Diplomatic Service. His early career in the Colonial Service took him to Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, where he was a Confidential Clerk to the Governor of the Colony. His work brought him into frequent contact with Kenneth Kaunda, who became the first President of Zambia. On returning to the Colonial Office, he was appointed as Head of Records Section sorting out non-current office files and carrying out research into old records dating back to the 16th Century. A posting to the Embassy at Washington DC followed, where John Freeman of TV fame was the Ambassador. During this time he met notables, such as David Frost and Harold Wilson. His job was to look after medical matters concerning all Diplomatic staff and Home civil servants posted anywhere in the USA. After a stint in Canada, John was posted to Malta, where he spent 5 years as the Consular Officer dealing with problems involving British tourists. He mentioned a particularly rewarding case concerning two children who, following the death of their parents and

Page 14: CHURCHES TOGETHER THOUGHT FOR MARCH SERVICES …whatsoninmyvillage.com/bridge/wp-content/uploads/... · hoveton village hall and playing field articles and press r eleases country

despite local difficulties, he managed to repatriate to the UK to live with their grandparents. The Foreign Office at that time had a policy of sending selected officers for language training and on his return from Malta John went to the Training Department with a responsibility for hard language training: languages such as Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Hungarian etc. This required contacts with training schools abroad, one of which was in a White Monk monastery in Paris. John was selected to carry out a special task required by the Cabinet Office, following which he was made the Head of Records Branch for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This was the same as his earlier job, except that it had been expanded to include the records and files of the Foreign Office, Colonial Office, Commonwealth Office and Dominions Office! In the mid 1980’s John was posted to the High Commission in Bangladesh, where the biggest number of consular staff in the service was based to deal with large numbers of Bangladeshis seeking to enter Britain. At short notice John was posed to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to assist with the final stages of the construction of a new embassy complex comprising offices and staff housing. He then went to Warsaw, Poland, for his final years of service: this was before perestroika and the breaching of the Berlin wall. John looks back on his career with satisfaction and says that even in hard times there was always something to enjoy about the job. Challenges can be many and varied, so what was an example? Well, sorting out a new credit card in a foreign country for a member of the nobility will do for a start! The varied nature of his career and interesting experiences are typical of those of our membership. There are always opportunities for rewarding conversations at our meetings. We are currently seeking new members, so why not give us a try? We will be holding a meeting on 27 March at the Masonic Hall in Wroxham, at which there will be a presentation by Robert East on the subject of Easton Tours. If this sounds as though it might be of interest to you, please make contact in the first instance with either Richard Williams on 01603 720184 or Ian Anderson on 01603 737298 at any time. We hope to see you at our next meeting. SOLO CLUB The year has started off well with several new members, but we would welcome more. The Club is for anyone age 55 yrs+, who lives on their own and would like to spend a pleasant afternoon once a month in the company of others. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday in the month at Hoveton Village Hall, Stalham Road from 2:00 – 4:00pm. During the year we will have an occasional speaker, themed afternoon teas, outings, etc. If you are interested, why not give it a go. For further information if required, please telephone 782132 or 782178.

WROXHAM & HOVETON LIONS CLUB Hopefully, by the time you read this the snow and frosty weather will be well behind us. It certainly caused problems and caused the cancellation of our January furniture sale, for safety reasons, as well as resulting in the shop being closed for several days. Our first Craft Fair of the year will be held on Sunday 3rd March (10am to 4pm) at the Broadland Youth and Community Centre. As usual, there will be a good selection of good quality, locally made products at reasonable prices. Refreshments will be available, including the delicious bacon rolls. Admission is free, so why not come along and have a browse. The next Furniture Sale is scheduled for Sunday 6th April, doors open at 10am. The Club was pleased to welcome Amanda Royde-Smith of “Riding for the Disabled” to our first meeting in February. Amanda gave us a very interesting talk on the valuable work the charity does and we have arranged for members to visit the centre, which is located near the Norwich Rugby Club , to see them in action. On the social front, the Club celebrated its 37th anniversary charter dinner at the Old Rectory, Crostwick and lions from a number of other Clubs in Norfolk joined our own members for a very enjoyable event. The special guest was Michael Brunson OBE, former chief political editor of ITN News, and he gave us some very amusing anecdotes and stories from his many years rubbing shoulders with the politicians at Westminster. A cheque for £500 in favour of Liveability at John Grooms Court was presented to Michael, in his capacity as a representative of the charity. A cheque for £1000, representing the 2012 proceeds from the Club’s Mobile Tombola, was also presented to Donna Minto, of the Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind. This month’s £100 Charity Shop Draw Prize goes to The Hall School, Catton, which was nominated by Mrs N. James of Hoveton, who donated items to our shop. If you have a few hours to spare occasionally and would like to make a difference in your local community whist having some fun, why not give our President, Lion Mike Clipston a ring on 01603429380 or alternatively contact our Membership Chairperson Lion Suzanne Barnett on 01603 782002. If you prefer, come along to one of our meetings, which are held in the Broadland Youth and Community Centre, at 8pm on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month. We are a friendly bunch and you will be made very welcome. HOVETON & DISTRICT CONSERVATIVE COFFEE CLUB At our January Luncheon at The Hotel Wroxham we were pleased to welcome, as our guest, Mr Brandon Lewis M.P for Great Yarmouth. Our next meeting at The Hotel Wroxham will be on Thursday, 28th March at 10:30am. Our A.G.M. will be followed by our speaker, County and District Councillor, Mr Nigel Dixon. Contact Tel. HOVETON, WROXHAM AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB Friday 1st March, 7:30pm, Hoveton Village Hall, Mrs Penny Clarke will give an illustrated talk on Behind the Scenes at Felbrigg. Mrs Clarke is one of the gardeners at this beautiful National Trust Property; it is one of the nicest gardens in Norfolk. New members always welcome £10.00 subscription per annum with discounts at local nurseries. Congratulations to monthly winners Mrs P Crouch and Mrs M. Ottaway. The Club has organised a visit to the Royal Horticultural Gardens at Hyde Hall on Thursday 4th July, these gardens are well worth a visit with stunning roses, clematis etc. This trip is open to non-members only, £15.00 inclusive. If you are interested, please contact Julian Abbott on 01603782883 for more details or booking. WROXHAM SOCIAL CLUB The weather during February unfortunately resulted in some cancellations to the Crib and Snooker matches, which have had to be re-arranged, and also one Saturday evening event. Wroxham Social Club finished 5th in the Stalham & District Crib League. Competition games were postponed until mid-February. Events for March are as follows: Please note that the Casino Night on 2nd March has been replaced by a Bar Quiz & Pizza; 9th March Bingo 8:00pm; 16th March Whist 7:30pm, 23rd March Bar Quiz; 30th March Games Night. Please support these events. A full events list is available at the club. Please note that the Telephone situated in the Kitchen at the club will be permanently disconnected on 12th February. This decision was taken by the committee as usage over the last 3 years amounts to less than £20 in revenue, which in no way goes anywhere near paying the rental costs. It was felt that as most people have mobiles these days minimum inconvenience would be caused. If anyone has any seed trays (not modules or pots) they no longer require, would you either leave them at the club or contact John Mason. New members always welcome. Contact Tel: 01603 782883. WROXHAM & DISTRICT LADIES’ LUNCHEON CLUB We meet on the first Tuesday of each month (excluding July, August and September) for an excellent lunch, followed by a talk, which is always interesting and entertaining. New members and visitors are always welcome to join us for good food and good company, and to hear speakers on a wide variety of topics. Mrs Jenny Atkinson on 01603 472556 or 01692 535932 will be happy to give you further details. WATER BIRD RESCUE During the “cold snap”, it was unusually challenging to locate “CAMOUFLAGE”, the swan cob brought down in flight by a cable strike, in a snow covered field. The wildlife casualty escaped serious injury. (Angling reminder: Course Fishing Close Season: 15 March to 15 June inclusive). Swan Helpline 01603 782626.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMEN’S SECTION WROXHAM, HOVETON & DISTRICT BRANCH Let us hope that when these words are being read, the weather has cheered up and that spring has arrived. It seems to have been a very long winter. If any Ladies out there would like a friendly place to meet for one afternoon a month, why not visit us at the Trafford Walk Community Room on Tuesday 19th March at 2pm. When the business part of the meeting is finished, we will be entertained by one of our own members with a video of her trip to Australia with her husband. We will then have lots of chat, refreshments and a raffle. One thing we have neglected to mention in the past, is that every year Norfolk County Women’s Section arranges a needlework/craft/photographic competition and many members across Norfolk enter some fabulous items. Our Branch is no exception and last November at the Annual County Conference in Norwich we were presented with cups and certificates - some of which had been won by individual members. May we once again remind you that a background in the Services in not necessary for becoming a member, just a wish to help with the provision of care and support to the ex-Service Community’s Widows and Children. Please give us a try; a warm welcome will always be given. For any further information, please ring 782312. WROXHAM FOOTBALL CLUB The 1st team were knocked out of the Ryman League Cup in the Quarter Final at Premier Division high-flyers Concord Rangers on Canvey Island 2-0. Our boys put up a good display after the long journey, but two second half goals, one late on, put paid to our run. By the time these notes are printed, we will know if we have reached Carrow Road in the final of the Norfolk Senior Cup, where we would play the winners of Cromer Town or Norwich City U21’s, so we hope we have something to look forward to in May. In the league we have continued to be blighted by the weather, but we lost narrowly at Thamesmead with an injury time winner for the home side, but we beat Romford at Trafford Park 5-0. The games are now coming thick and fast, so to keep up-to-date log onto our website www.wroxhamfc.com or follow us on Twitter @the_Yachtsmen. The reserves have had very few games because of the weather and will also have a lot of games to cram in. Likewise the U18 are just fitting their games in when they can, but are slowly climbing the table. We have a couple of fund-raisers coming up with a comedy Hamster Racing night at the Unthank Arms, Norwich on 2nd March - this should be good fun. Then on Easter Sunday 31st March we have a Book/CD Fayre at the cub 10am – 1:00pm. Donations still required for books, CD’s and DVD’s. Please contact Secretary Chris Green on 783936 if you can help. The clubhouse continues to be available for hire for parties and celebrations - please contact Geoff Skeet on WFC Clubhouse No 783538.

WROXHAM BURE VALLEY ROTARY CLUB By the time you read this, we will have completed our collection day in Norwich at St Stephens in aid of Polio Plus, the international effort by Rotarians across the world to help eradicate polio. We are pleased internationally to be working with the Gates Foundation on this great cause and some of you may have seen Bill Gates giving the annual Dimbleby Lecture on television recently, when he spoke passionately about this programme. In addition some of our members visited India recently to help with their National Immunisation day targeting over 100million children under the age of 5. There have now been two years without any polio cases in India and this major country is well on the way to being declared polio free. The tractor for the Faith project in Zambia was duly shipped late January – it should soon be at its destination and starting to be put to use, helping cultivate the 600 acres at the Faith project centre – a massive thank you to all who made this wonderful project possible. Our next big event is our sponsored walk along the Bure Valley railway will take place over the weekend of 20th/21st April. This is a joint effort with Macmillan Cancer charity, and we hoping for a great turn out to support this great cause. Please put the date in your diary now. Full registration details next month, but meantime further information can be found on the Macmillan web site www.bvw2013.co.uk. We will also be running a barbeque at Wroxham station to great walkers at the end of their exertions! We are once again running the Schools Technology tournament, which takes place at Broadland School, Hoveton on 15th March, where we hope to have up to 8 local secondary schools competing. Looking further ahead, we will be running our popular summer dance again; date likely to be 29th June, so make a diary note now and we will have more information next time. The Rotary Foundation Peace and Conflict Resolution Fellowship programme offers graduates, and young business and professional people the opportunity to study abroad. Run by Rotary International, funding is available for academic study at six universities, located in various parts of the world. Fellows can earn either a master’s degree in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a related field. Tuition fees, travel and subsistence costs are covered by the fellowship. There are 60 scholarships available world-wide for the period 2014/2016 and applications are currently being invited through local Rotary Clubs. Any readers interested and eligible should make preliminary contact with Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club as soon as possible and in any case by 1st May 2013. The Club will then decide whether a full application should be sent to the District committee by 1st June 2013 for further consideration. As ever there is a lot going on as we continue to implement the Rotary motto of “service above self” and if our lively social group sounds good to you, we are looking to build our membership for 2013. We welcome both men and women from all walks of life, so if you are interested in joining us, please come along to one of our meetings, where guests are always welcome, we meet Monday evenings from 7pm at the Norfolk Mead Hotel in Coltishall. BARTON HOUSE RAILWAY 01603 782008; www.bartonhouserailway.org.uk; [email protected] CELEBRATING 50 YEARS AS YOU WILL NO DOUBT BE AWARE BY NOW, THIS YEAR WE CELEBRATE OUR GOLDEN JUBILEE (1963-2013) SO IT WILL BE AN EXCITING TIME WITH ADDITIONAL EVENTS TAKING PLACE ON EACH RUNNING DAY. Please be aware though, events listed in the 50th Anniversary programme may be subject to change. Any significant alterations will be published. Our 49th annual meeting was held in Dickerson’s Diner on Saturday 19th January 2013 and commenced promptly at 7pm under the Chairmanship of Peter Bower. A very full 28 item agenda meeting was well attended finishing around 10:30pm. Some 17 departmental reports, which had previously been published in our January Staff Newsletter were commented upon by the Chairman and discussed as necessary. Richard Jones very kindly stood in as minute’s secretary on behalf of Emma Howard. Richard, who now looks after our accounts presented these and was greatly thanked. Also, congratulations were given to him for his success in passing all his accountancy exams. Although it was to be noted that financially BHR had suffered greatly during 2012 in consequence of poor attendances, the sum of £1250 was agreed to be given to Nelson’s Journey, our charity for 2012, which was the sum given for our charity in 2011. Our nominated charity for the current year is 1st Stalham Sea Scout Group and thinking about our nominated charity for 2014 consideration was to be given for perhaps an animal related charity or maybe as well as a humanitarian one. The need for a stronger support for working parties in between running days was emphasised, there were many tasks to be tackled. Ernie Watkins & Silvia Tilson were present on most Sunday afternoons to co-ordinate necessary work and offers of help. Lawrence Hassall had unfortunately found it necessary to step down from the post of Publicity Officer although would remain responsible for the production of leaflets and posters, together with the item for “The Bridge” each month. A special 50th Anniversary leaflet was presented, giving details of events planned to take place during the year and all posters for 2013 had a special designed header portraying 50 years of operation. All the work Lawrence had done was duly recognised and thanks given. Stan Gardner agreed to co-ordinate the publicity side of things relating to distribution and communication. Diane Bebbington would support him with this. It was announced that TV reporter Carol Bundock had accepted an invitation to attend our Anniversary

Running Day on Sunday 21st April and involvement with certain events. Lawrence Hassall presented a t-shirt and sweat shirt, which had been produced by Turnstyle Printing & Embroidery with the Joint Friends logo on the front. The future prospect of these would be discussed further at an appropriate meeting, but initially was thought to be a good sales and promotional exercise. The Chairman was delighted to announce that after a long time and many requests, a Chairman had been found for the Joint Friends. Keith Wheeldon had agreed to take on this role, but a Newsletter Editor & a Secretary was still eagerly awaited. Joint Friends membership at the end of 2012 stood at 114 with 35 being BHR members of staff. It was hoped that under new leadership, the Joint Friends would be able to move forward. A welcome midway break was supplemented with a wonderful buffet, again provided by our member Christine Spencer and really appreciated. BHR was represented at the Norfolk Railway Show in Norwich on Saturday 26th January and will be at the Norwich Model Railway Show on Saturday 6th April. Peter Bower will be hosting again our Annual Dinner at Barton House on Saturday 2nd March, which will include a presentation on the 2012 season and visual entertainment. This event is always a highlight and socially a very happy and beneficial occasion. On the “run-up” to our first running we have the preparation day on Sunday 17th March and Training & Testing Day on Sunday 24th March. WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION Our French Twinning friends in La Pommeraye and Mont-Jean-sur-Loire are planning some exciting visits for us, when we visit their beautiful Loire region this year, 14 - 20th August: the night time spectacular at Puy de Fou (Google it, it is amazing!), visits to local crafts, such as chocolate making, slate mining, bee keeping, a treasure hunt games morning, Saturday evening dance, the wonderful hospitality of our French hosts and we also have our visit to Fontainebleau en route and a night’s dinner, bed and breakfast near Paris. It will be a great trip as usual. Gill hood will be sending out deposit forms shortly to secure your places, still room for more, and still time to join and come as new members: give Gill in South Walsham a ring on 01603 270397. Look out for our Sunday wine tasting lunch at the local Bouchon wine bar in April, hopefully either 14th or 28th: more details soon. We have also set the date for our autumn quiz and supper as 12th October in Wroxham Church Hall, teams of six, as usual, so keep that date free. More forward planning too for our Flotilla day, when we all set sail with our boat-owning members for a day on the Broads, picnic all together and have fun, and this year that will be on 13th July. Sue and Stewart have also kindly invited us to their house in Coltishall on 26th July for a pre-French Twinning visit supper and meeting, which all members are welcome to attend: let’s hope Stewart’s bees are a bit friendlier this year! The French Conversation group discussed romance in February, being the day before Valentine’s Day, at Angela’s in Hoveton and Book Club “The Little House” by Philippa Gregory at Carole’s in Wroxham. They will meet again in March on the second and last Wednesdays respectively. French lessons continue to go well, with an excellent tutor, at Kevin and Ruth’s in Wroxham on a Thursday evening: we are expecting great speeches in French this year, Stewart! For any more information, please contact Stewart on 01603 738555 or [email protected].

1ST WROXHAM GUIDES Over the past few weeks, Guides having been rotating around four different activity stations. Station 1 Guides made jam tarts and planned a route around London using underground and street maps to visit different places of interest. At Station 2, Guides made and baked Fairy Cakes, learned how to use a sewing machine to design and decorate camp blankets. At Station 3, Guides made cheese scones, learnt how to iron and played a game understanding washing symbols. At Station 4, Guides made Ginger Biscuits and designed a healthy living poster. On Ash Wednesday, we could not use the church hall, so Guides met at different houses and enjoyed, making, cooking, flipping and eating pancakes before having their say on the Girlguiding Promise Consultation. The Promise is guiding’s beating heart – it is the core expression of our values and the common standard that brings us all together. But over the past few years more and more girls and Leaders, who struggle with the wording, particularly interpreting what it really means to girls today. This is nothing new, the Guide Promise has already changed 11 times in just over 100 years, but it is the first time all members have been able to have their say. Forthcoming activities include wall climbing at Eaton Vale; a Guides only World Thinking Day Celebration event and a spring camp at Coltishall. After Easter, we will be inviting six girls from the waiting list to join us at Wroxham Guides, so during March we are also holding taster sessions for them to attend so they can see first-hand what we do. You will have to wait until the next edition of the Bridge to find out what we get up to! Kate, Leader 1st Wroxham Guides, Tel: 01603 722665, [email protected] HOVETON & DISTRICT WI Valentine’s Day is a time for expressions of love to one another and chocolates are traditionally a way of showering women with affection. Desired by women around the world and often regarded as an aphrodisiac; the smell alone can send a woman into raptures. So our speaker Margaret Furness, who was demonstrating making handmade chocolates, was warmly welcomed (especially as samples were available to try!). The smell of melting chocolate tantalised our taste buds and we were enthused by the simplicity of producing a tiffin, liqueur truffle and dark chocolate and pistachio fudge. We were advised as to the best chocolate to use without the need to temper couveture chocolate and given hints and tips about obtaining supplies and the presentation of our confectionary. Our ladies were given recipe sheets to take away and try out, and a box of Margaret’s chocolate creations was donated as a raffle prize. Continuing the theme, our members participated in a competition to decorate a chocolate box. It was encouraging to see so many entrants who put a lot of time and effort into their creations. Congratulations to our joint winners and many thanks to all those who voted for their favourite entry. Our next meeting will be at 2:15pm on Wednesday 6th March at Hoveton Village Hall. In a change from our scheduled speaker Mr Jon Read will give a talk on The Red Dragon & Tylwyth Teg. A jigsaw swap, bring and buy stall, raffle and book stall will also be taking place. Visitors and new members are very welcome. For further information please ring 01603 783387.

COUNCIL NEWS

HOVETON PARISH COUNCIL STATION ROAD, HOVETON The dilapidated state of 3 properties on Station Road continues to vex parish councillors. The Broads Hotel demolition and redevelopment with a building of 17 flats still seems to be a distant dream. At a meeting on 4th February, District Councillor Dixon told the Parish Council that he is liaising with North Norfolk District Council planning officers with a view to get the redevelopment moving. The Broads Hotel Cottage The planning authority for this side of Station Road is the Broads Authority. Planning permission for redevelopment of this site was granted nearly five years ago. Initially it was valid for three years and renewed in April 2011 for a further 3 years. It is understood that the owner is unwilling to go ahead with this redevelopment until his requirements for the Hotel site are as he wishes. The Waterside Rooms next to The Kings Head Hotel look more and more derelict and The Orchid Group, which is the current leaseholder thinks it is unlikely that it will find a use for the building. At a meeting organised by the Broads Authority in May 2012, Orchid offered to allow a local charity (or possibly even a start-up business) use of the premises for a peppercorn rent, but a large outlay would be required to return the building to a useable state. In an effort to improve the appearance of Station Road, Hoveton Parish Council has, with the permission of the Orchid Group, decided to organise a working party to tidy up the garden on the Station Road side of The Waterside Rooms. Would you like to volunteer? In the “old days” people could just turn up at working parties and help out. Modern Health & Safety legislation and appropriate Insurance requirements mean that volunteers must register several days before the working party so that HPC’s insurance company can be informed.

WORKING PARTY SATURDAY 23RD MARCH 2013 If you feel community minded and would like to join the working party, please register (by 20th March) by email [email protected] or phone Carolyn Williams 01692 630367.

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY – 6:30pm FRIDAY 17TH MAY 2013 THE ANNUAL PARISH MEETING at HOVETON VILLAGE HALL Two items on the Agenda will be important to the village: 1) Discussion about plans for Granary Staithe 2) The North Norfolk District Council’s Civil Contingencies Manager, Richard Cook, has agreed to attend and explain contingency plans in the event of flooding, serious power outages or a major disaster in Hoveton. www.hoveton-pc.org.uk

BROADLAND DISTRICT COUNCIL Important news about Broadland District Council's Brown Bin Garden Waste Service Invoices for the Brown Bin service will be issued to existing subscribers in February & payment due dates will be clearly shown. We have made some changes to ensure that the service continues to be excellent value for money. Paying by Direct Debit will be £5 cheaper than paying by other methods for 2013/2014, full details of how to set up a Direct Debit will be shown on your invoice. If you have not paid by the due date on the invoice, you will no longer be a member of the Garden Waste service & your brown bin will be removed following your last collection in March. If you leave the service, either by not paying by the due date or by cancelling the service, and you would like to re-join at a later date, you will be charged the normal fee PLUS an additional re-joining fee of £15 per bin to cover associated costs. NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL MESSAGE FROM COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLOR NIGEL DIXON Councils to Hold Council Tax Levels: I am pleased to advise that both the County and District Councils do not propose to increase Council Tax in 2013/14; this is expected to be formally agreed in February. This will be the 3rd year the County Council has held Council Tax at 2010 levels. However, the Police and Crime Commissioner is seeking an increase for the Police element of Council Tax. Dog Fouling Problems: I have recently had more complaints of dog fouling problems in Hoveton especially in the Two Saint Close area. This is a particularly anti-social and unhealthy problem, which dog owners can so easily prevent by collecting and disposing of faeces in the approved manner; or, if you are caught out without a bag etc. then moving it out of harm’s way is the minimum action expected. There are several dog bins around: please use them or take it home and keep our village clean. It is an offence carrying a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80, which could lead to fine of £1,000 and NNDC will undertake appropriate surveillance of areas known to be worst affected. The Purchase of the Airfield at Former RAF Coltishall Many of will know NCC completed the purchase of the site in January; the main reason for this was to ensure the site is regenerated to provide major economic growth facilities and a range of numerous new job opportunities. It was almost certain the site would continue to decay and lay dormant if NCC did not intervene. The next stage is to produce a Master-plan for the future use of the site and to assist that process a community liaison group was formed in mid 2012; it has had 4 meetings to date and it includes about 25 people from adjoining Parish and District Councils and other stakeholder groups. A list of possible uses has been prepared and anyone with ideas can add them to the list via email at: [email protected] or via me if you wish. A draft Master-plan is expected in late May and a final version should be agreed around October. This is a huge task and the potential rewards for the local economy and communities is enormous; it is

Page 26: CHURCHES TOGETHER THOUGHT FOR MARCH SERVICES …whatsoninmyvillage.com/bridge/wp-content/uploads/... · hoveton village hall and playing field articles and press r eleases country

thus right not to rush the process and that it should be as inclusive as possible. NCC welcomes short term use proposals and will give short leases appropriately; it has also started a program of work to stop the decay of buildings and keep the site secure. I am keen that the local area benefits as much as possible from this very rare opportunity. My contact details, if you wish to raise any other concerns, are: Tel: 783885, or e mail: [email protected] or [email protected].

NOTICES

WILLIAM EDWARD WHIPP A sincere thank-you to all friends and neighbours for their concern and support during Bill’s long illness. The measure of your regard for him was shown by the numerous cards and letters received, and by your attendance at Church, despite adverse weather. Margaret and Family. DAVID FRANK SKIPPER 1944 – 2013 Many local people were saddened to hear of the passing of David Skipper, who was born in the village of Parr in the Attleborough area. He came to Wroxham in 1949 at the age of 5, when his father became cowman for Tipple’s Farm at Broad Farm, Wroxham. David always thought of himself as a Wroxham lad, brought up in the village, attending Wroxham County Primary School and onto Broadland High School, Hoveton. On leaving he went into the newsagency profession, also doing a number of other jobs, including looking after greyhounds at the former grey hound stadium at Boundary Park, Norwich. David’s work took him away from the area, but in the late sixties returned to team up with long-time friend Reg Boyce, opening a newsagents shop, adjacent Wroxham river bridge. He lived at Ashmanhaugh in those days, moving shortly to Hoveton and started The Bridge Newsagents business in the newly formed Hoveton Precinct in 1972. In his younger days he turned out for Wroxham F.C., also helping with a great deal of much needed fund raising for the local Lions Club. David is survived by wife Julie, daughters Corrina, Alexander and Samantha – also grandchildren Kira, Kaci and Aaron. David died at home at Barton Vicarage. The funeral service will take place at St. Faiths Crematorium on Tuesday 5th March at 1:15pm. No flowers, but donations if desired to SCARF, Skin Cancer Research Fund, to Gordon Barber Funeral Services, Horning Road West, Hoveton NR12 8QI. 1ST HOVETON & WROXHAM SCOUT GROUP are pleased to announce, due to popular demand, the opening of a second Cub pack for boys and girls aged 8 - 10years. The meetings will take place at Scout H.Q., Nobel Crescent, Wroxham, NR12 8SF each Friday in term time, commencing on Friday 19th April 2013. ARTICLES AND PRESS RELEASES COUNTRY KITCHEN FOODS – NEW MEALS ON WHEELS SERVICE We are a mother and daughter team, based in Cawston. We prepare freshly cooked traditional meals, which are delivered daily, free of charge, Monday to Friday. Norfolk County Council has recently removed any food subsidy that they had been providing and therefore the meals on wheels service that was offered via them has ceased. Our service is aimed to replace the previous service offered and to enhance not only the quality of the food that we can offer, but also the daily contact that we believe is much needed. We are hoping to raise awareness of the service we provide, we currently deliver to Wroxham, North Walsham, Aylsham, Mundesley, Norwich, Hellesdon, Dereham, Fakenham, Reepham and surrounding villages. We are always looking to cover new villages or towns as and when the need arises. All of our meals are freshly prepared in our local kitchen and are not frozen, as we believe that providing fresh wholesome food is vital to the older generation. We deliver our meals in the morning to give you the choice of either having lunchtime or evening meal. All meals are £4.95 for 2 courses or an option of just a main meal can be provided for £4.45. Meals are provided in either a microwave or oven container for heating. We have tried to keep this as simple as possible; as we

understand that many other meals on offer have many different heating requirements and therefore become very confusing to reheat correctly. We pride ourselves on being friendly and approachable, and try to meet any individual requirements, we are a Norfolk Trusted Trader and we are all CRB checked. If you would like to discuss your requirements or have any questions please give us a call, we would love to hear from you. Tel: 01603 871329 or 07788 290025, or you can e-mail us [email protected]. Kirsty and Judith 1st AYLSHAM JUNIOR CHESS CONGRESS - 09.02.13 On Saturday 9th February 2013 twenty-six enthusiastic young chess players met at Aylsham High School to play in the 1st Aylsham Junior Chess Congress. The players, from a wide range of Aylsham, Broadland, Sheringham and North Walsham Cluster Schools, faced each other in 5 rounds of 50 minute games. For many of the 7 - 14 year olds involved, this was their first opportunity to play competitive chess. Everybody seemed to enjoy the experience irrespective of their final scores. All the players taking part received certificates of participation and there were prizes for the most successful players, including two of our local youngsters. Under 8s Best result by an Under 8: Freddy Cansick from St John’s Primary School, Hoveton. Under 14s Runner Up: Finnian Wheeler from Broadland High School, Hoveton. The event was organised by members of Broadland Chess Club with support from Aylsham High School colleagues. Following the success of the 1st Aylsham Junior Chess Congress, it is hoped that the event will become a regular fixture of the chess season. HORNING BOAT SHOW Despite a very cold, snowy morning, around 100 people came to the Open Meeting on Saturday 26 January to hear more details about the Horning Boat Show, which will be held on Saturday 4 May. Following a presentation by Colin Boakes, Chairman of the Boat Show committee, Chris Cooper of Norfolk Yacht Agency and Duncan Abel of Anglia Afloat explained why they are so enthusiastic about the Boat Show and why they had decided to become principal sponsor and media partner respectively. Both said they saw it as a great opportunity for Horning, as many companies are now deciding against exhibiting in the large, national boat shows and therefore this is just the right time to launch a local boat show to raise funds for local village projects. Such is the enthusiasm for the Boat Show that many more exhibitors have signed up and calls are being received daily

from other potential exhibitors. “I am confident that we are on target for around 50 exhibitors on the day” said Colin Boakes. For more details on the Horning Boat Show, including a full list of exhibitors, visit www.horningboatshow.org or follow it on Facebook or on Twitter @boathorning. Due to the efforts of people like yourselves over £270,000 has been raised so far and the money you raise this year will go towards services Macmillan provides across Norfolk, including health professionals, grants emotional support and the refurbishment of the Macmillan Cancer Care and Treatment Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn.
