En 1812 cuando las tropas Francesas fueron expulsadas de Rusia, el Zar Alejandro I , ordenó la construcción de una iglesia con el nombre de "Cristo el Salvador ", para expresar a la Divina Providencia, la gratitud de los Rusos, por haberlos salvado del desastre que hubiera significado que Napoleón se apoderara de Rusia.

In 1812 when the French troops were expelled from Russia, Czar Alexander I, ordered the construction of a church with the name of "Christ the Savior", to express to the Divine Providence the gratitude of the Russians for having saved them of the disaster it would have meant if Napoleon had taken over Russia.

El 5 de diciembre de 1931, por orden de Stalin, la iglesia fue dinamitada. En el lugar donde estuvo la iglesia, Stalin ordenó construir el "Palacio de los Sóviets", el cual tendría una estatua de Lenin, de 100 metros de altura. El proyecto nunca se materializó

1919 was the most dramatic year, when the Soviet regime confiscated and destroyed hundreds of churches.

This cathedral was destroyed in 1937. and very little of the interior decoration, was saved, before being blown up.
