Religious Education News

No one, however weak, is denied a share in the victory of the cross.

No one is beyond the help of the prayer of Christ. Pope St. Leo the Great, Feast day April 11

Several people have asked me how they can continue to make their tithing contribu-tion to the parish. I’m very glad folks are wondering about that! Contributions are down, as you might expect, and we especially won’t be hosting a number of visitors at our Easter Masses. Their

contribution does a lot to see us through financially. The parish, like a number of families, is facing the need for some belt-tightening this coming year.

There are several ways you can give. Our website has a new option for making online contributions. Simply go to https://SaintBasilCatholicChurch.org, scroll down a bit, and see the big blue “Donate Now” button. Click on it and follow the instructions for making either a one-time or ongoing donation.

You can also download a form for signing up for ACH payment on the website at https://saintbasilcatholicchurch.org/parish-forms. If you don’t have access to the internet, you can call one of the nice people at the office (269-637-2404) and they can help you. There may not be anyone there when you call, but leave a message and it will be sent to us through email.

You can also just send checks in the mail. It will make it easier if you use your regular contribution envelope but we can figure it out if you can’t find one.

Finally, you can use the method I use. I’ve set up my contribution to St. Basil with my bank as a recurring “bill.” Believe me, it gets done more consistently that way. (For some reason, the ushers never come up to me with the baskets!) That being said, however, I don’t want you to think of your offering as a bill, especially in this time when many are facing an uncertain financial situation. Just take care of your families, do what you can for others, and give praise and thanks to God. Fr. Jim

Do This In Memory of Me As we enter Holy Week, we celebrate the gift of the Eucharist as our heaven-ly food. We continue to reflect on the

challenge of global hunger. How does our faith inspire us to share the gifts that God has bestowed on us? Visit crs-ricebowl.org for more.

Religious Education classes are cancelled until April 19.

Can you spend some time in daily prayer? Visit https://diokzoo.org/sundayexperience

Throughout these weeks of social distancing, if you are able, please reach out to those you usually see regularly at Mass, and check in on each other, take care of each other.

Please remember to pray for the sick and those in nursing homes or who are homebound. We are unable to make nursing home visits at this time, and prayers are always needed. Perhaps you can send a card to any parishioners who are homebound or in the nursing homes to let them know you are praying for them.

TMIY Continues! This video series is available for any man of the parish who would like to view this program. On Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. discus-

sion of the program will be facilitated by using Zoom. Currently we have 23 men divided into three Zoom groups. Contact Deacon John at [email protected]

How Can We Continue to Stay Spiritually Engaged and Even Grow During This Time?

1. Build a home altar or shrine. Setting aside a sacred space in your home encourages your family to pray. Candles, a crucifix, a Bible, holy water, and your favorite sacred icons and images can all be placed around a small table to uplift the soul to God.

2. Participate in the Mass. While Mass may be suspended in many places, Catholics can still participate in the Holy Mass via livestream and worship as if they are actually there.

3. Pray a daily family Rosary. Set aside 20 to 30 minutes each day to gather around your home altar as a family and to pray the Most Holy Rosary for a swift end to the pandemic, for all those afflicted, for all healthcare workers, for the souls of the faithful departed, and any intentions you and your family may have.

4. Gain a plenary indulgence every day of COVID-19. The Church grants a plenary indulgence to all those who are suffering from the coronavirus, to healthcare workers who are treating those affected, and to all the lay faithful. In order to obtain the plenary indulgence, Catholics must have the will to fulfill the usual conditions as soon as possi-ble and do one of the following spiritual acts:

Visit the Blessed Sacrament. Read the Bible for at least half an hour. Pray the Rosary. Pray the Stations of the Cross. Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The spiritual act must be offered for the following in-

tentions: the end of the pandemic, relief for those af-flicted, and eternal salvation for those whom the Lord has called to himself.

5. Study God’s Word. Start a virtual small group, continue your existing small group via video chat, or study Scripture on your own with The Great Adventure Catholic Bible. By studying God’s Word and pondering it in our hearts, we will grow in our faith and fall in love with Scripture.

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS REPLENISHING

Please, if you are able, consider donating non-perishable food to the We Care I.N.C. Food Pantry. If there was ever a time to feed the hungry, this is it. Many in our

community struggle on a daily basis to feed their families, and the struggle will only get worse during the next few months. Items may be dropped off in the South Lobby (see cover of bulletin for hours the church is open) or at First Congregational Church, 651 Phoenix Street, during this national health crisis. They are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. till noon.

Sunday Church Bulletins for Children Now available on our Website

You may download one from our website, under the Education tab, and use it at home as we practice social distancing.

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry remains open during the pandemic. We are providing a drive through service on Thursdays between 1-4 p.m., located at 201 S. Walnut, Bangor (back door).

Distance Learning Works!

With the dedication of our teachers, the support of our parents, and the eagerness of the children, we continue to to educate and serve.

1st grade students read "When Picasso Met Mootise" and responded by creating their version of a Cubist self-portrait.

3rd graders read Charlotte's Web over these last two weeks,

and made dioramas .

From Ms. Otto In 4th and 5th grade, we have been using Google Class-room to keep up with learning! I'm doing it in an asynchro-nous manner, so students are able to work at their own pace and on a schedule that works for them. We cover Math and Language Arts every day, and the other subjects are on an every other day rotation. I post assignments and students can complete their work either with Google Docs/Slides or on paper and send me pictures. They can also ask questions and chat with each other using comments on the assignments. Sometimes it feels like I'm still right there with them, because their comments are just so full of their indi-vidual personalities.

We tried our first Zoom meeting as a class this past week, talking and keeping up the relationships we've built all year. I even have a digital escape room that we're going to try out (focused on nonfiction text struc-tures and features to keep it educational).

I'm recording Math lessons using a screen recording app, so I can use an online whiteboard and a digital copy of the textbook. I mark them up and write all over my screen and record myself talking at the same time to teach. It's a bit strange to do it without being able to tell if the kids are understanding it, but I can get so much more information to them that way!

I have also been recording myself reading chapters of “Anne of Green Gables” as a read aloud. We do a read aloud from a chapter book every day in class, and I wanted to keep some of our normal routine. “Anne of Green Ga-bles” is a book that I loved as a kid, and I'm enjoying shar-ing it with my students.

I can't say enough how I am surrounded and blessed with a fabulous team of people! From my staff and our school families, to the parish staff, Fr. Jim, and parishioners, I can't imagine a better group of people with whom to navigate such strange and uncertain times. It is with your help and support that our little school is able to do such wonderful things.

The teachers and our families continue to work as a team to ensure our students maintain their academics. While we all miss our students and families terribly, we remain committed to supporting them during this time to the best of our abilities. It has truly been amazing to be a part of our shift to distance learning. While not ideal, it is working!

I look forward to the day when our students are back in school and the faithful are able to once again fill the churches. The one thought that continually comes to mind as I reflect on the recent events and the support we have here at Saint Basil: We've got this!

Thank you again for all you do for Saint Basil Catholic School. Please stay safe and healthy, and may you have a blessed Holy Week and Easter. Camille DeLano, Principal

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

by St. Alphonsus Liguori

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most

Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to

receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite my-

self wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.
