CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX

AUGUST 19, 2012 – TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The rearing of children calls for many strong and resilient traits of character, but probably none is as necessary as the patience of

love. If you don’t believe it, then speak to the parents of a confused or defiant teenager. Many of them could tell you a story that would

simultaneously boil your blood and break your heart. The story has many variations but the plot is essentially the same. A child is born,

and in one of those beautiful mysteries of life, a father and mother fall instantaneously and forever in love with that baby. Joyfully, they

take up the task of caring for that child. They feed him when he is hungry. They laugh with him when he is happy. And so on and they

watch him grow. He learns to walk and talk, to feed and bathe and dress himself. He starts to go to school, and the parents observe his

progress with great pride. He seems to be on a normal course of development.

Then one day something bad begins to happen. The parents are not sure just where or when it all started, but a breech develops

between them and their child. He has become more and more independent and that’s a good thing. But more and more his independence

takes the form of hostility and belligerence. He becomes increasingly rude and rebellious. Their home is constantly filled with the tension

of harsh words and unspoken anger. The parents aren’t sure what to do. They try everything from persuasion to coercion, but nothing

seems to work, and the breech grows wider and wider between them.

All they want is to love and be loved, and see their son grow into happy and useful manhood. But he has rejected their values,

resented their participation and closed them out of his life. They can’t stop loving him; so what else can they do but hurt and hope and

pray and wait. Sometimes love waits because it has to; no other acceptable option is available.

Then there are other times when love waits because it chooses to. Think back to your own childhood. There were times when you

went to your parents with urgent requests that were not immediately fulfilled. Your father said “No not now. You’re not ready for that

yet.” At the time you were terribly disappointed. You felt mistreated, misunderstood, possibly even unloved. But now you are older and

perhaps wiser, and you can see it differently. Your father and mother were not opposed to your happiness, but they were much more

interested in your long range well-being then they were your momentary pleasure. The thing that you wanted wasn’t bad; it was just

untimely. You were wanting too much too soon; so because your parents loved you they waited and they made you do the same.

Part of the fulfillment of life, indeed, part of the happiness of life, is wanting some things that we don’t get. And almost without

exception the things that we enjoy the most are those for which we wait the longest and work the hardest. So we ought not to get impatient

with life. We should not be discouraged by the delays in life. Keep on hoping and praying. Love is a waiting game, and God will bless us

at the right time.

MANY THANKS

We are most grateful to all our wonderful parishioners who have

sacrificed so generously by increasing their weekly Sunday

contributions. Please know that your weekly increase is for the

betterment of St. Theresa Parish, for the building up and

improvement of our parish. We are most grateful to all of you

who have helped to make a difference in our community. Please

continue to help us in order to keep St. Theresa Parish the vital,

growing parish that it is. We are the only parish in our

immediate area with the lowest Sunday collection. We need to

keep up with our neighbors. Your help is vital. Thanks for all

you do!

AN INVITATION

Now that the good weather is here, please reach out to family,

friends and neighbors and invite them to join you at Mass every

Sunday. Many Catholics in our area are waiting for an invitation

from you to return to the Lord, to the Sacraments, to Church.

Would you help them, please!

CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM until

5:00PM or by appointment with one of the priests in the

Rectory.

TREE OF LIFE

Perhaps you may consider our “Tree of Life” located by the

statue of the Sacred Heart in the Church. It is a way in which

our parishioners can memorialize their loved ones.

Please call the Rectory for more information.

HOMEBOUND – If any member of your family or if any of

your neighbors is “Homebound” and would like to receive Holy

Communion at home, please call the Rectory so that a Priest or

Eucharistic Minister might visit them.

REMEMBER – Please remember St. Theresa Church when you

are making or updating your will. Our needs will be great in the

years to come. God Bless You!

Fr. Grippo and the Parish of St. Theresa’s are happy to announce That Sandro Alexander Leyton-Rodriguez will be Ordained to the Order of Diaconate which will be conferred on September 1, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, NY.

CATHOLICISM FILM SERIES

Join us on Tuesday night at 7:30PM on August 21st in the

rectory meeting room for the 10th and last part (out of 10) of the screening of Fr. Robert Barron’s “Catholicism” movie series. In this amazing series, Fr. Barron presents the Catholic faith in a most engaging and challenging way. The 10th episode is entitled “World Without End: The Last

Things”. You do not need to have seen the previous episodes to come see the last four since each stands alone. Coffee and dessert will be served. There are Spanish subtitles.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

What is the RCIA? It is a process for adults

• who are interested in becoming Catholic

• or who are already baptized and desire to complete their

sacramental initiation through the reception of

Eucharist and/or Confirmation

If you seek to become part of our community of faith or wish to

complete your sacramental initiation, please call the rectory at

718-892-1900 to leave your name and telephone number.

Someone on our RCIA team will return your call and set a time

to speak with you about this important decision.

The RCIA is a vital source of renewal for our own parish

community, not only because new members join the parish, but

also because our personal witness, our worship service, and our

teaching will offer the support necessary for the men and women

who seek to become part of the Catholic Church. If you are

thinking about entering more fully into the Catholic Church,

pray about it, call the parish, and let the Lord do the rest.

It should be called the Federal Fresh Start Law: it provides a Government sanctioned forgiveness of debt with no tax ramifications. It takes about 2 years to re-establish your credit after bankruptcy. It’s not part of the problem, it’s part of

the solution to raising your credit score. There’s no longer any social stigma when it comes to getting bankruptcy relief. Our economy is not your fault. Don’t let the Banking Industry scare you away from getting the debt relief you are
