CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX
MARCH 3, 2013 – THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
What is your opinion on the prevalent mood of our modern time? Called upon to describe that mood, many would, I think, use such
adjectives as frightened, disappointed, skeptical, even cynical.
In contrast to this prevailing mood, we have the spirit expressed in scripture. The Prophet Isaiah, during this Lenten season, for
example, was dealing with people who were exiled in Babylon, and he describes them as “those whose hearts are frightened.” Yet his
message from God to them is one of expectation and hope.
The gospels too express much the same mood. Jesus heals the sick, and the people who witnessed those miracles were thrilled
beyond measure. Their enthusiasm overflows as they sang the praises of the Lord.
And yet many today have difficulty relating to these facts. Not many really believe that miracles can take place today. The sad truth
is that most of us still do not believe in miracles. We can convince ourselves that they happened in Bible times, but not many of us
expects any to happen today. And this is so sad and at times even tragic, because if there is anything our modern world needs, its’ a few
miracles. What a difference it would make in our mood of skepticism if somehow we could believe that the day of miracles is still with us.
For one thing, it could certainly change our attitude toward human possibilities and what is likely to happen tomorrow. We like to
believe that our skepticism is tough-minded and realistic, that people who expect God to work miracles are nothing more than soft-headed,
starry-eyed dreamers. Perhaps we need to remind ourselves how many times in history the skeptics have been proven wrong.
When Columbus said that if a person sailed far enough to the west he would come at last to the east, most people laughed him to
scorn. I am told that the first steamship that crossed the Atlantic had on board a book which proved conclusively that no steamship could
possibly carry enough fuel to cross the Atlantic.
Isn’t it better for us to be people of faith, believing in the possibilities of what people can do with hard work and God’s grace. This
is not an easy-going optimism as if everything is getting better and better and all we need to do is wait for it. That kind of attitude is not
faith but utter foolishness. The truth of the matter is that this life can be, and yes often is, a dreadful experience. Some people live every
day with grinding poverty, with incurable disease, with social humiliation, with financial burdens, and with political persecution.
But we can face life with expectancy and hope if we are people of faith. As crazy as this world can be, let us be honest enough to
recognize that progress is being made. We see it in the realm of medicine, social services, human relationship. We have a long way to go,
but we have come a long way. The kingdom of God is not going to be left on our doorstep with the morning paper, but the possibilities are
still there. And miracles can and do happen every day.
The power of Jesus to put a person on his or her feet and give all the strength to face up to life is even more amazing then opening
the eyes of the blind or the ears of the deaf to hear. So the day of miracles is still with us. Our life is not a dead-end street. Miraculous
changes are still possible, even for you and me. Please believe it! It is a truth that we need to accept. It will make a profound difference
in our daily life.
The Food Pantry is in need of food to replenish the pantry. We
are hoping to give out food for Easter Sunday. We are asking
for tomato sauce, pasta, box or can juices, soups, cake mixes,
frostings, oatmeal, cereal, crackers, rice, tuna fish, canned non-
perishable goods, peanut & jelly. We would like to distribute
the food to those families who are on our food pantry list. God
Bless you for all of your kindness. NO GLASS JARS
PLEASE.

had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in

'For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig
tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it

It should be called the Federal Fresh Start Law: it provides a Government sanctioned forgiveness of debt with no tax ramifications. It takes about 2 years to re-establish your credit after bankruptcy. It’s not part of the problem, it’s part of
the solution to raising your credit score. There’s no longer any social stigma when it comes to getting bankruptcy relief. Our economy is not your fault. Don’t let the Banking Industry scare you away from getting the debt relief you are
entitled to under Federal Law. Call for a Free telephone consultation. Admitted to practice in 1982.Thomas M. Denaro, Esquire *1726 Edison Avenue, Bronx, NY 10461 *718-863-6000
