16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mark Church July 23, 2017

Pastor’s Corner As many of you know, on Monday of this past week I had surgery on my right eye as a result of a detached retina. The first sign that I experienced was some blur-ry vision in the top part of my eye. I origi-nally attributed it to stress, especially with the death of my brother and my good friend Pat from my Seminary days. But, when it was still there the next day, I went to see my Optometrist. He said that there was pressure on my retina, and referred me to a retinal specialist. It turned out that I had a detached retina, which is in the back of your eye, not the front. The surgery went well, and I am able to rest comfortably. I have experienced very little pain. I am dictating this Pastor's Corner on Tuesday morning, as I can't use the com-puter for a while. I have an appointment this afternoon and the doctor will remove the bandages and see how it looks. Hope-fully he is happy with what he sees! I plan to be back in action for the Masses this weekend, but I'm taking it a day at a time. If I'm not ready yet, I assure you that you will be well taken care of by the other priests. Thank you so much for your pray-ers! And, if you have any symptoms of problems, especially in your eyes, ears, or chest, please get yourself checked out right away. The doctors know more about our health than we do, but we are the ones who have to take the first step and make the call! May the Lord continue to bless us always and in all ways, Father Paul Spellman

FROM OUR PASTOR

No tuve mucho do-lor.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN

PROTEGIENDO A LOS NINOS

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA

Use creative problem solving to help protect kids Often, there are many ways to solve a problem, and many possible solutions. If you teach your children to problem solve creatively, and think outside the box when they are faced with a challenge, this can help them formulate problem-solving skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. By using creative problem solving methods, parents and chil-dren can brainstorm new ideas to protect kids from stranger danger, abuse, violence, and the other risks present in the world. Discuss possible solutions and highlight common themes to help your children develop strategies for staying safe. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Creative Problem Solving--How Can It Help?” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

For particular help you may call Suzanne Healy, director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God’s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God’s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God’s might, but is a direct result of God’s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clemency? Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the inter-cessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God’s mercy, power, and love.

LOVING SOMEONE To love someone deeply gives you strength. Being loved by someone deeply gives you courage.
