Q: The only fish I like is shrimp and lobster. It’s a texture thing. My husband claims that I can’t eat this during Lent because I have to make a sacrifice, and lobster and shrimp aren’t sacrificial enough. Help! A: From the earliest days of the Church the practice of abstaining from meat and doing penance on Friday has been observed. This is a way of praying not just with your mind and voice, but also with your whole body. Abstaining from meat was a way of recognizing the great sacrifice Christ made for us on Good Friday. In order to explain the practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays in Lent and instead eating fish we have to go back to our Latin and Greek roots. (Remember, we are the Latin Rite.) The word for flesh in Latin is also the word for meat, carne. As in car-nivore (meat eater) and incarnation (the Word became flesh). Jesus gave up his flesh on Good Friday in order to save us, pouring himself out completely for our salvation. It used to be the practice that every Catholic did not eat carne on every Friday throughout the year in recognition of Christ sacrificing His flesh. One of the changes in practice after Vatican II was to allow Catholics to substitute another form of penance on Friday, but most Catholics don’t know they should do some act of penance in remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice every Friday, and to give up meat on Fridays is a great way to fulfill that penance. Incidentally, the word for hello in Latin is salve, and the word for good-bye is vale. So, what did they call the night before Lent began when they would eat sumptuous food and drink sweet drinks? Carne vale! Goodbye flesh! Which later became carnival. OK. That explains the meat, but what about the fish? No, it’s not be-cause the Pope owned fishing companies, it’s actually more beautiful. Since the early Church the fish has been a symbol for the Church. Many Christians have fish emblems on the back of their cars today announcing their Christianity. The fish was a secret symbol during persecutions in the early Church to show you were a Christian. Why? Because of the Greek name for fish is "ἰχθύς" (ichthus). This was also an acronym, where each of the letters stands for a word, just like COP is “Constable for Order and Protection.” The acronym for ichthus was I – Ieus, CH – Christos, TH – Theo, U – Uios, S – Soter. Which means “Jesus Christ God’s Son Savior.” Which is a little abbreviation for the most important part of our faith: Jesus is God’s Son and our Savior. This is also what Peter confessed in Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 16, when Jesus asked his Apostles, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter responded, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Then Je-sus said to Simon, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh

and blood has not revealed this to you but my Father in heaven has; and I say from now on you will be Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” The fish, therefore, was a symbol of the Church Christ founded on the rock of Peter. During Lent we are to turn away from sin and embrace the Gospel. No meat is an act of penance for our sins, eating fish is a symbol of the Gospel, the food of Truth, that we are invited to take in and devour every day. So, don’t worry about feasting on fish during Lent, any fish, because we are all invited to eat and drink deeply of the Truth of our salvation. JESUS IS THE CHRIST, GOD’S SON, AND OUR SAVIOR! How good it is!

We welcome you to Sunday Mass. As faithful Catholics, we come weekly to the Eucharist to hear God’s Word and to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Our new Parish of Divine Redeemer has finally come to fruition. With the capable guid-ance of Father Farnan, our staff and a score of volunteers we are becoming a simply wonderful Catholic in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. If you are visiting today and searching for a spiritual home, please con-sider joining our Parish. Today is the First Sunday of Lent. As we embark on the 40 days of Lent, today’s readings prompt us to confront our human tendency to sin and our mortality. As we journey through these 40 days of Lent, we can emulate Jesus’ acts of prayer, fasting and almsgiving and recognize his obedience and willingness to sacrifice himself for our salvation. Lent gives us an opportunity to work against temptations towards sinful behavior and instead live simply and justly, inspired by Christ. May these actions guide us through this Lenten season and throughout the year. The Way of the Cross is a traditional prayer in Lent. The Way of the Cross is prayed every Fridays at 1:30pm with the St. James School children, 4:00pm at St. Mary’s and at 7:00pm at St. James. Please come and bring the children. We pray for our members who are sick and those who are mourning the loss of a loved family member or friend. We have a great oppor-tunity to pray before the Blessed Sacrament daily from after the 9:00 a.m. Mass until 9:00pm at St James – Monday thru Friday. O Sacra-ment Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine. All Praise and all Thanksgiving be every Moment Thine. God guide you with his love this first week of Lent. Your three priests promise to remember you in prayers. Love, Fr. Dave

ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM THE “WINTER BLUES” OR IS IT SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS? Do you feel like you have “cabin fever” during the winter months, or find yourself eating or sleeping more when it’s cold outside and gets dark earlier? While those are common reactions to the changing sea-sons, people with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) experience a much more serious reaction when summer shifts to fall and on to win-ter. SAD is a type of depression, and it can severely impair your daily life. Some of the symptoms include depression, hopelessness, anxiety, loss of energy, social withdrawal, oversleeping, loss of interest in ac-tivities you once enjoyed, craving foods high in carbohydrates, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating. The specific cause is unknown, but some researches believe that the reduced level of sunlight in the win-ter may disrupt your body’s “internal clock” and may lead to depres-sion. Some also believe that SAD may be tied to melatonin, a sleep-related hormone. The body usually produces more melatonin during long winter nights, and this may be linked to depression. Another theory is that a lack of serotonin, which is a natural brain chemical that affects your mood, may play a role. Reduced sunlight can cause a drop in serotonin, perhaps leading to depression. Like depression, SAD is often possible to successfully manage. In mild cases, you can take certain measures on your own: make your home sunnier and brighter by opening blinds or trimming tree branch-es that block sunlight; get outdoors on sunny days, even during the winter, and take a walk or sit in the sun for a few minutes while read-ing a book or eating lunch; exercise to help reduce stress and anxiety, both of which can increase SAD symptoms; stay connected with peo-ple you enjoy being around. If you feel that you may be suffering from SAD and haven’t been able to cope with your symptoms, please speak with your doctor for further information.

ST. JAMES SCHOOL NEWS

Author’s visit at St. James School St. James School is a member of the Sewickley Area Librarians (SAL), which works together with the librarians in Sewickley to bring in authors and illustrators to the area schools. This year we had the pleasure of bringing award-winning author Candace Fleming to St. James to meet with our 5th through 8th grades.

Candace met with the children for about an hour and explained how she has written both fiction and non-fiction books for pre-schooler children to adults. She went into detail about how she does her research for her non-fiction books. Our students en-joyed answering her questions and asking some of their own.

After her visit, she confided with Dr. Swiger about how smart our students are and how much she enjoyed interacting with them.

VBS SAVE THE DATE! This years Vacation Bible School will be held at St. James, July 6-10 from 9:00am - Noon. We are looking for some adults to help organize and take charge of the different activities. If you’re interested in volunteer-ing or have any questions, please email Barb Venturella at [email protected]

WORSHIP & HEALING NIGHT Jordan Sonnett, our Director of Disclephship will host a Worship and Healing night every Tuesday from 7:00-8:00pm in the St. James Children's Chapel.
