A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR...
Last Sunday, a St. Francis parishioner asked me if I had any input on the upcoming presidential election. I had justreadlastFriday’sCatholicTimeswhichincludedthefollowingremarksofPopeFrancis.I’lldefertohim:

Although he was in a relaxed mood andwelcomed reporters’questions foralmostanhour, Pope Francis said he would never comment onaspecificelectoralcampaign.“Thepeoplearesovereign,”hesaid.“Studytheproposalswell,prayand choose in conscience.”

TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 16, 2016
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CENTER OCTOBER NEWS
The Food Pantry needs for October are: canned fruit, hamburger helper type meals and jelly. The Food Pantry collection here at St. Edward is the weekend of October 23rd. Your donations are greatly appreciated.
The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store is undergoing some personnel changes. As with any change, there are always some challenges. One major challenge that has come up is the organization of the warehouse area. The good news is the donations are really rolling in. The bad news is the space to house the donations is being stressed. We need volunteers to help us regain control of the warehouse area.
The plan is to begin the work on October 22 and to finishonOctober29.WewouldworkonSaturdaysfrom9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and on weekdays – 12:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:30-9:00 p.m. The work would entail: 1. Removing old items from previous years donations (recycling, selling or donating these items to needy families), 2. Grouping all the donations into the various categories, i.e. clothing, home goods, etc. 3. Organizing the donations by category in the warehouse allowing plenty of room for movement and work areas.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could volunteer to work during one of the scheduled times. Children, middle school age and up, could assist with this work. The thrift storehasdonatedthousandsofdollarstoboththemen’sshelter and food pantry. The funds received from the thrift store are essential to the success of our programs. STRENGTHENING THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH
Jesus asks us to demonstrate our love for Him through our generosity to others. In our everyday lives, He calls us to share our gifts of time, talent and treasure with others. “Whilewehavetheopportunity, letusdogoodtoallpeople– but especially to those of the household of the faith.” (Galatians 6:10)

MERCY NOW ~ STEWARDS OF GOD’S MERCY“TheLord leadsus to followhis path— that of service, sharingandgiving;andthatlittlewehave, thelittlethatweare, if shared, becomes a treasure because the power of God, who is love, descends to our poverty and transforms it.” – Pope Francis, May 2013
What difference does faith make in your life? Can you truly say that Jesus is your Lord, Savior, Teacher and Friend? Does this relationship guide your living, so that your daily decisionsandactionstakefaithintoaccount?“Becominga disciple of Jesus Christ leads naturally to the practice of stewardship. These linked realities, discipleship and stewardship, then make up the fabric of a Christian life in which each day is lived in an intimate, personal relationship with the Lord. (SDR, p. 14) (Stewardship:ADisciple’sResponse–USBishops’PastoralLetteronStewardship)
Whenwe reflect on the impact of anencounterwithJesus among those with whom he interacted in the Gospels, we often see an immediate change of mind and heart. This month during Sunday Mass, we hear the story of Zacchaeus, who climbed a tree in order to see Jesus. His encounter with Christ leads him to a dramatic change of lifestyle, promising to give half of his possessions to the poor and to repay anything he had extorted four times over. These outward actionsaresignsofaninwardconversion–Zacchaeus’newrelationship with Christ changes who he is, and his decisions and actions are immediately effected.
“FollowingJesusistheworkofalifetime.Ateverystepforward, one is challenged to go further in accepting and lovingGod’swill.Beingadiscipleisnotjustsomethingelsetodo,alongsidemanyotherthingssuitableforChristians;itisatotalwayoflifeandrequirescontinuingconversion.”(SDR, p. 15)
Have you opened your mind and heart to Christ, allowing Jesus to change you forever? Have you made a commitment or renewed commitment to follow Jesus each day? In what ways are your outward actions signs of your interior relationshipwithChrist? These are questions for everydisciple. By Leisa Anslinger (www.CatholicLifeandFaith.net)

Within our society, life is under direct attack from abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, and destruction of human embryos for research. These intrinsic evils must always be opposed. – USCCB “FormingConsciencesforFaithfulCitizenship”

Youmightsayourmessagefromtoday’sreadingshas everything to do with prayer. Could Jesus put it more clearly than He does at the beginning of the GospelfromLuke?“JesustoldHisdisciplesaparableabout the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.”
We may recall that St. Paul told us we needed to “prayconstantly.”Prayershouldbeat theverycoreof our faith lives, and it is the beginning point of living lives of stewardship. Jesus probably did not mean that we should always be on our knees with our eyes closed in prayer, but He did expect us to always be in whatonemightcallthe“spiritofprayer.”Paulreferstothisin1Thessalonians5:17whenhesays,“Praywithout ceasing.”
To be sure, prayer is not easy. We may, as the Lord says, sometimes“loseheart”inprayer, becauseitisdifficultforustoperceivetheanswerortheresponseto our prayers. (The term “lose heart” is anothertranslation of what was translated in the Gospel as “becomingweary.”)Toooftenweuseprayerasalastresortinsteadofafirstresource.
A healthy, consistent, and regular prayer life is in many ways the secret to a successful faith life. St. JohnChrysostomsaid,“Prayeristheplaceofrefugeforevery worry, a foundation for cheerfulness, a source of constant happiness, and a protection against sadness.” www.catholicsteward.com.

“What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the truest of guides for human life?” ~Saint Benedict, from the Rule of Saint Benedict (73:3)
“Do not live any longer in yourself, but let Jesus Christ live in you in such a way that the virtues of this Divine Savior may be resplendent in all your actions.”
~SAINT PAUL OF THE CROSS
Monday, October 17 ~ Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr
Holy Gospel: Luke 12:13-21 Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the
inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then
he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not
consist of possessions.” Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a
bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he
said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my
grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up
for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be
demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for the
one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”
Meditation: In the Gospel parable of the rich fool Jesus gives a lesson on using material possessions,
which contains a warning to beware of all covetousness. To “covet” is to wish to get wrongfully what
another person possesses or to begrudge what God gave him or her. Jesus restates the commandment
“do not covet,” but he also states that a person's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.
In this little parable Jesus probes our heart – where is your treasure? Treasure has a special connection to
the heart, the place of desire and longing, the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our heart on
is our highest treasure. What do you treasure most? Jesus and his teachings, embracing and living them?
Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, who adorn the sacred body of your Church with the confessions of holy
Martyrs, grant, we pray, that, just as the glorious passion of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, which we celebrate
today, brought him eternal splendor, so it may be for us unending protection. Through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: During the time that Jesus walked this earth it was customary for people to take their
disputes to the rabbis for them to settle. Jesus refuses such a case and instead gives the disputant a
parable to “mull over.” How would you react if Jesus refused to settle your dispute, but gave you a parable
instead? What is the point of Jesus' story about a wealthy landowner and why does he call him a fool?
Jesus does not fault him for his industriousness, but for his egoism and selfishness. Like the parable of the
rich man who refused to give any help to the beggar Lazarus (ref. Luke 16:19-31), this man had lost the
capacity to be concerned for others. His life was consumed with his possessions and his only interests
were in himself. His death was the final loss of his soul! How sad! Do you prize earthly possessions more
than heavenly treasure and eternal life with Christ?
About Saint Ignatius of Antioch: The bishop and martyr Ignatius occupies a foremost place among the
heroes of Christian antiquity. His final journey from Antioch to Rome was like a nuptial procession and a
Way of the Cross. For the letters he wrote along the way resemble seven stations of the Cross; they may
also be called seven nuptial hymns overflowing with the saint's intense love for Christ Jesus and his
longing to be united with Him. These letters are seven most precious jewels in the heirloom bequeathed to
us by the Church of sub-apostolic times. The year of St. Ignatius' death is unknown; perhaps it occurred
during the victory festivities in which the Emperor Trajan sacrificed the lives of 10,000 gladiators and
11,000 wild beasts for the amusement of the bloodthirsty populace. Ignatius wrote: “From Syria to Rome
I must do battle with beasts on land and sea. For day and night I am chained to ten leopards, that is, the
soldiers who guard me and grow more ferocious the better they are treated. Their mistreatment is good
instruction for me, yet am I still far from justified. Oh, that I may meet the wild beasts now kept in
readiness for me. I shall implore them to give me death promptly and to hasten my departure. I shall
invite them to devour me so that they will not leave my body unharmed as already has happened to other
witnesses. If they refuse to pounce upon me, I shall impel them to eat me. My little children, forgive me
these words. Surely I know what is good for me. From things visible I no longer desire anything; I want to
find Jesus. Fire and cross, wild beasts, broken bones, lacerated members, a body wholly crushed, and
Satan's every torment, let them all overwhelm me, if only I reach Christ.”
Tuesday, October 18 ~ Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Feast of Saint Luke, Evangelist
Holy Gospel: Luke 10:1-9 The Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples whom he sent ahead of him
in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the
laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way;
behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet
no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ If a peaceful
person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and
eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves payment. Do not move about from one
house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the
sick in it and say to them, ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.’”
Meditation: What does Jesus mean when he says his disciples must be lambs in the midst of wolves? The
prophet Isaiah foretold a time when wolves and lambs will dwell in peace (Isaiah 11:6 and 65:25). This
certainly refers to the second coming of Christ when all will be united under the Lordship of Jesus after he
has put down his enemies and established the reign of God over the heavens and the earth. In the
meantime, the disciples must expect opposition and persecution from those who oppose the gospel. Jesus
came as the true “sacrificial lamb” who atones for the sin of the whole world. We, as disciples of Jesus, the
Lamb of God, must also be willing to sacrifice our lives in humble service of our Lord and Master.
Prayer: Lord God, who chose Saint Luke to reveal by his preaching and writings the mystery of your love
for the poor, grant that those who already glory in your name may persevere as one heart and one soul
and that all nations may merit to see your salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: “Poverty of spirit” frees us from greed and preoccupation with possessions and makes
ample room for God’s provision for us. The Lord wants his disciples to be dependent on him and not on
themselves. God gives us his Word and his Spirit that we may have life in him – abundant, grace-filled life
which never ends. He wills to work through and in each of us for his glory. God shares his word with us
and he commissions us to speak it boldly and simply to others. Do you believe in the power of his word?
And are you ready to witness the joy and truth of the gospel to others by embracing and living the gospel?
About Saint Luke: St. Luke came from Antioch, was a practicing physician and was one of the first
converts to Christianity. He accompanied St. Paul, who converted him, on his missionary journeys and
was still with him in Rome when St. Paul was in prison awaiting death. We hear no more of him afterwards
and nothing is known of his last years. The Church venerates him as a Martyr. St. Luke's Gospel is
principally concerned with salvation and mercy; in it are preserved some of our Lord's most moving
parables, like those of the lost sheep and the prodigal son. Dante calls St. Luke the “historian of the
meekness of Christ.” It is also St. Luke who tells us the greater part of what we know about our Lord's
childhood. “According to tradition he was an artist, as well as a man of letters; and with a soul alive to all
the most delicate inspirations, he consecrated his pencil to the holiest use, and handed down to us the
features of the Mother of God. It was an illustration worthy of the Gospel which relates to the divine
Infancy; and it won for the artist a new title to the gratitude of those who never saw Jesus and Mary in
the flesh. Hence St. Luke is the patron of Christian art.”
Wednesday, October 19 ~ Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time St. Isaac Jogues, St. John de Brébeuf, Priests and Martyrs,
and Companions, Martyrs
Holy Gospel: Luke 12:39-48 Jesus said to his disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had
known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must
be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” Then Peter said, “Lord, is this
parable meant for us or for everyone?” And the Lord replied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent
steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper
time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. Truly, I say to you, he will put
him in charge of all his property. But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and
begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant’s
master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish the servant severely and
assign him a place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master’s will but did not make
preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of
his master’s will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly.
Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person
entrusted with more.”
Meditation: This parable also contains a lesson in faithfulness. The Lord loves faithfulness and richly
rewards those who are faithful to him. What is faithfulness? It's keeping one's word, promise, and
commitments no matter how tough or difficult it gets. Faithfulness is a key character trait of God and one
that he expects of us. Fortunately God gives the grace and strength to remain faithful. He also rewards
faithfulness. The joy and privilege of being a son or daughter of God carries with it an awesome
responsibility. The Lord expects us to make good use of the gifts and graces he gives to us. The more he
gives, the more he requires. The temptation while the Master is away is to put off for tomorrow what we
know the Master expects us to do today. How can we grow in faithfulness? God's grace shows us the way.
When we are faithful in the little tasks and promises we make, we learn to be faithful in the bigger and
more important responsibilities and tasks entrusted to us.
Prayer: O God, who chose to manifest the blessed hope of your eternal Kingdom by the toil of Saints
John de Brebeuf, Isaac Jogues and their companions and by the shedding of their blood, graciously grant
that through their intercession the faith of Christians may be strengthened day by day. Through our Lord
Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and
ever. Amen.
Contemplation: What can a thief in the night teach us about the kingdom of God? Jesus loved to tell
stories, many which ended with a dramatic and unexpected change of circumstances. Can you imagine a
thief calling ahead to tell his victim when he would strike? Should we be surprised to see a thief making
off with a great treasure left unguarded? What does this say about the treasure which God has entrusted
to you and me? When God offers us his kingdom, he gives us a treasure beyond measure (read see the
parable of the treasure hidden in a field and the pearl of great price in Matthew 13:44-46). What is this
treasure of immeasurable value? The Lord himself is our treasure (Job 22:22-23) and the kingdom he
offers us is a kingdom of peace, joy, and righteousness (Rom. 4:17). The Lord offers us a relationship with
him as his sons and daughters and the promise of eternal life as well. The treasure of a strong relationship
with Christ is of far greater value that any earthly treasure and more secure! But it's possible to lose this
treasure if we do not guard what has been entrusted to us by God. Is your treasure secure?
Thursday, October 20 ~ Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Paul of the Cross, Priest and Founder of the Passionist Order
Holy Gospel: Luke 12:49-53 Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I
wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my
anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell
you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two
against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her
daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a
daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
Meditation: Jesus’ sharp statement that he would cause division rather than peace within families must
have shocked his disciples. Was he exaggerating? Jesus used a typical Hebrew hyperbole to drive home an
important lesson. We often do the same when we want to emphasize something very strongly. Jesus’
hyperbole, however, did contain a real warning that the gospel message does have consequences for our
lives. It has the power to heal, restore, and unite those who believe its message. But the consequence of
ignoring or rejecting the gospel can lead to many hurtful desires and seduction by the world. When Jesus
spoke about division he likely had in mind the prophecy of Micah: a man's enemies are the men of his own
household (Micah 7:6). The essence of Christianity is loyalty to Jesus Christ, a loyalty that takes
precedence over every other relationship – home, work/profession/trade, school, politics, nationality,
sports, and so forth. The love of God compels us to choose who will be first in our lives. To place any
relationship (or anything else) above God is a form of idolatry. Jesus challenges his disciples to examine
who they love first and foremost. A true disciple loves God above all else and is willing to forsake all for
Jesus Christ. Jesus insists that his disciples give him the loyalty which is only due to God, a loyalty which
is higher than spouse or kin. It is possible that family and friends can become our enemies, if the thought
of them keeps us from doing what we know God wants us to do. Does the love of Jesus Christ compel you
to put God first in all you do (2 Corinthians 5:14)?
Prayer: May the Priest Saint Paul, whose only love was the Cross, obtain for us your grace, O Lord, so
that, urged on more strongly by his example, we may each embrace our own cross with courage. Through
our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for
ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Do you want to be on fire for God? Jesus shocked his disciples when he declared that he
would cast fire and cause division rather than peace upon the earth. What kind of fire did Jesus have in
mind here? Fire in biblical times was associated with God and with his action in the world and in the lives
of his people. God sometimes manifested his presence by use of fire, such as the burning bush which was
not consumed when God spoke to Moses (Exodus 3:2). The image of fire was also used to symbolize God's
glory (Ezekiel 1:4, 13), his protective presence (2 Kings 6:17), his holiness (Deut. 4:24), righteous
judgment (Zechariah 13:9), and his wrath against sin (Isaiah 66:15-16). It is also used of the Holy Spirit
(Matt. 3:11 and Acts 2:3). God's fire both purifies and cleanses, and it inspires a reverent fear of God and
of his word in us.
Friday, October 21 ~ Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Holy Gospel: Luke 12:54-59 Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say
immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does; and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the
south you say that it is going to be hot–and so it is. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the
appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? “Why do
you not judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make
an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and
the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. I say to you, you will
not be released until you have paid the last penny.”
Meditation: None of us has the power and strength of will for overcoming sin and evil on our own
resources. We stand in constant need of God's strength and protection. That is why scripture uses vivid
language to describe God as our rock, fortress, and mighty defense. We are also vulnerable to Satan's lies
and deceptions and our own blindness of spirit for recognizing sin in our lives. That is why we need God's
help for distinguishing truth from error. Fortunately the Lord Jesus, who is our Judge, is also our Advocate
who pleads for us at the right hand of the Father in heaven. The light of Christ reveals what is in our
hearts and his grace frees us from the tyranny of sin, hurtful desires, and addictions. God's call is urgent
and his grace is available for each of us to experience total freedom and transformation in Christ.
Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, grant that we may always conform our will to yours and serve your
majesty in sincerity of heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: In reading sacred scripture Jesus wants to wake us up saying: “Wake up! Can't you see
who is standing right in front of you speaking to you? It's me! I have a message of love and freedom and
no one is listening! C’mon...wake up!” Sometimes we are oblivious to the miracle of Jesus being in our
lives, standing right in front of us. We are too busy and distracted to see it. He wants to grab our attention
away from so many things that distract us and he wants to tell us he loves us – “You see me in the
obvious places, like in Church,” he might be saying to us. “But what about during the rest of the week?”
He wants to strip away the fears, challenges and anxieties that distract us, heal us of our angers and our
grudges, and give us meaning, direction, purpose, joy and contentment. Too often we use our energy and
focus to remind ourselves of the people we resent and those who have hurt us or the pain we carry from
our earlier lives. What Jesus offers us is a healing, if only we can believe how much we are loved by him.
Only in that place of healing can we see what we have been missing all along - Jesus standing in front of
us, holding our face in his hands, telling us how much he loves us.
