Tudor Oaks Monarchs By Don Bardonner

Bob Horst brought the idea of developing a monarch butterfly garden or two at Tudor Oaks to the men’s coffee hour sometime in late 2018. This would add interest and beauty to our cam-pus and help, in a way, to save the monarch from declining numbers. A committee was formed to plant a butterfly garden, with the first meeting taking place on February 5, 2019. Glenn Cove and a site around the reflection pond were selected for the gardens. Plants were ordered. Some were grown from seed by Bob Horst and Lu Anne Thompson. Our two consultants, Tom Zagar and Jim Price also donated plants. Eight residents and three out-side helpers planted around 200 plants on May 31 and June 11. In June, Tom Zagar donated two caterpillars from his flower garden. Norma Mann raised these two caterpillars by feeding them milkweed leaves. To everyone’s delight, one monarch butterfly was born on June 25 and the second one was born on July 8. A big thanks to all of our residents for supporting this pro-ject with their labor, ideas, and contributions.

Can Tabs to Ronald McDonald House

In August, Mike Holmes and Jim Snyder took approximately 50 pounds of can pull tabs, col-lected here at Tudor Oaks, to the Ronald McDonald House as part of the aluminum recycling program. Last year Mike and Jim were told that since the year 2000, donated can tabs from many sources have generated over $360,000 for their operation. That is a significant amount!! Thanks for YOUR contributions, Tudor Oaks residents, and thereby OUR contributions to help a worthwhile project.
