Fr. Kevin’s Christmas Desk Christmas gives us the gift of Jesus and Jesus gives us God. That is a cause for unending joy. A dear priest friend of mine shared this story with me and so I share it with you. “My first year of priesthood I finished my “last” Christmas Mass and was so tired I could not even work up a sense of joy. I marvelled at all the parents who had dinners to make and had been rushing around striving to bring joy into their homes and wondered where did they get the energy and the joy from. Sitting in my room in the rectory trying to work up enough energy to get up and go for Christmas dinner, a dinner that someone had slaved over, where someone had lovingly set a table and prepared a home I wondered where did they get the energy from? Walking to my car I almost turned around and returned to the rectory, I had no joy, I was tired. But Catholic guilt can be a good thing and I sucked it up got in my car and drove to the home I had been invited to. As I arrived at the house the children were playing in the yard chasing after each other with great squeals of joy and I wished for that energy and joy. Into the house I went with great fear that I would fall asleep on the couch or at the table but into the fray I went. Off went the coat and into my hand a glass of “treated” eggnog. “Father, have a seat, put your feet up and if you need a nap there is an empty bed at the end of the hall.” In that greeting and offering I found a gift of understanding and a gift of joy. I must admit that I took them up on a nap, supper was a little bit of a wait so a nap looked pretty good. I had only just laid my head down when unto the bed came the family cat, curling up beside me and so I fell asleep to its gentle purring. About 20 minutes later the 5 year old came running into the room calling my name and demanding I get up and see the tree and the presents and all the goodies “Jesus” had brought. Somewhat confused and a bit groggy I wandered into the living room only to find things just as they were when I first arrived. Turning to the 5 year old I asked about his presents. In that small child’s voice he told the story of how Santa works for Jesus to bring joy into the world because some people don’t know Jesus and some people don’t like him. Santa helps to bring joy by giving us gifts. There is something about a small child’s joy that is infectious and I marvelled at his story. Turning to dad I asked where he had learned the story from and was shocked to discover that he had made it up all by himself. It was his understanding of God and Jesus and no one in the family seemed inclined to change any of it or correct him in anyway. In that little story I found my joy and my hope for little children know the truth that adults tend to lose.”

Peace Fr. Kevin
