D F ,

Merry Christmas! All the Advent prepara ons have brought us to this glorious day celebra ng the Incarna on of Christ, the Messiah! What there is le for us to do is to savor the beauty of this day! St. Francis was the man who really “kept Christ in Christmas”. On Christmas Eve, in 1223, he visited the li le hilltop town of Greccio and reenacted the Christmas story in a cave nearby. One of Francis’ biographers, Thomas of Celano, describes the event at Greccio in great detail. He says: “The day of Joy drew near, the me of great rejoicing came. The brothers were called from their various places. Men and women of that neighborhood prepared with glad hearts, according to their means, candles and torches to light up that night that has lighted up all the days and years with its gleaming star…the manger was prepared, the hay had been brought, the ox and ass were led in. There simplic-ity was honored, poverty was exalted, humility was commended, and Greccio was made, as it were, a new Bethlehem.” Thus began our tradi on of se ng up na vity scenes in our homes and churches. This Christmas, then, as you pray before the manger, let us give thanks to God for the many gi s we have received in life and most especially for the gi of Love itself in the Christ child. Unlike secular society, our Christmas celebra on does not end with our dinner this evening. We will celebrate the Feast with more beau ful commem-ora ons including the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God/New Year’s Day and ending with the Epiphany of the Lord and the Bap sm of the Lord. Keep those Christmas lights glowing…we just can’t get enough of this most Holy Season! On behalf of the friars and the staff of Mission San Luis Rey Parish, I wish all of you a Blessed Christmas! Love,

THE SULTAN AND THE SAINT MOVIE SCREENING, SAT., JANUARY 7,

7:00PM ST. THOMAS MORE PARISH CENTER UPPER LEVEL - REFRESHMENTS AT 6:30PM

St. Thomas More is excited to be partnering with the North County Is-lam Founda on to show a film that will serve as a counter-narra ve to inspire Muslims, Chris ans, and oth-ers to take risks for peace and greater understanding. In 1219, in the midst of the disas-

trous Fi h Crusade, Francis crossed enemy lines to gain an audience with al-Kamil, the Sultan of Egypt. Francis, who opposed the warfare, hoped to bring about peace by con-ver ng the Sultan to Chris anity. He didn’t succeed, but came away from the peaceful encounter with revolu onary ideas that called for Chris ans to live harmoniously with Muslims. Thus began a rela onship between the two that lasted the rest of their lives, each man risking his life to pro-mote peace between their faiths. Ques ons? Please call Sr. Maureen Brown, Pastoral Asso-ciate, at 760-758-4100 x131 or Regina Aulisio, our Ecumeni-cal and Interreligious Affairs Parish Liaison, at 760- 295-5530, or Issam Lagrichi, North County Islam Founda on, at 760-681-0755. S T E W A R D S H I P T H O U G H T

Amidst the beau ful Christmas read-ings at today’s Masses, we are remind-ed that God has given us a gi in the person of Jesus Christ. This gi repre-sents God’s ac ve presence in our lives and in our world. This gi redeems us from evil and death. This gi purifies us as God’s people. This is a gi that also comes with an expecta on: that we receive it with thanksgiving, allow it to transform us into Christ’s image; and from it, learn how to live a life “eager to do what is good.” Take me the next few days to re-flect on the marvelous gi we celebrate at Christmas, and how we might become be er stewards of this gi .

COLLECTIONS— DECEMBER 14-20

Above is the collec on for the third week of December - a bit behind budget for the month. Please remember that the Parish relies heavily on Christmas contribu ons to sustain us through the year. With Christmas falling on a Sunday, it is important that our dona ons for the re-mainder of the month reflect a regular Sunday collec on as well as a Christmas collec on in order for us to meet our expenses over the next few months. As always, please consider electronic fund transfer (EFT) or online giving - the New Year is a great me to start! Feel free to contact Elizabeth Rose at 754-0711 if you have any ques-

ons. Merry Christmas!

CHRISTMAS FOOD BASKETS AND ANGEL TREES Thank you to all who contributed towards the Christ-mas Food Baskets and Angel Tree. Because of you, many families had a nice meal to share with their families and gi s to provide for their children. From our family to yours, thank you and many blessings on this very holy season. ~~Carmen Parra.

WHAT IS EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP?

This is it! For these many days, you have kept the faith and tried very hard to devote yourself to becoming a be er disciple and Everyday Steward. It may not have been as easy as you had hoped. Commercialism was temp ng you. The fast pace of the season was causing you exhaus on at mes. Some days you just didn’t want to think about much of anything. No ma er how successful you feel you have been this Advent season, today is the day when Love is born and all the hopes that you and I have for our world are now possible. Here is the reality: you couldn’t have done any-thing over these past few weeks that amounted to any-thing without God. Think about the stories we have read about the miracles of Elizabeth, Manoah’s wife, and Mary. Nothing was possible inside of them un l God in-tervened. Recall the saints whose feast days we have celebrated. Without God they would not have the cour-age to face all of the tests this world can offer. Remem-ber the call of Andrew, Peter, James and John back in the first week of Advent? What could they really have accomplished in the early days of this Chris an move-ment without the grace from God? What all these role models have in common is they all answered God’s call with a YES. With that yes, they gave themselves over totally to the rela onship offered to them by God. No longer was it their work in the world, it was God working through them. Stewardship is less about what we do and more about what God does through us. If these weeks of Advent have passed and you think you didn’t do enough, you missed the point. If you have said yes to God throughout any part of this process, a good work has begun and con nues to take place in you. And so, this is Christmas. Make the next several days meaningful. If you will be celebra ng with family, enjoy them and love them. They are truly blessed gi s from God. If you find yourself alone, remember that you are never truly alone. Par cipate in our parish liturgies and events. Maybe find a way to share your me with some-one else who might be alone. Find me to pray more, laugh more, and smile more. Enjoy the gi of life that God has given you. Reflect on how God has played a role in your life during this past year. Decide what your 2017 will be like and make a promise to be the Everyday Steward that God is calling you to be. For God, there are no years. For God, me is always now.

Amor,
