ARTICLEHealth Living With Lupus

By Sarah Pearson

Hello, my name is Sarah and I am a 44 year old mum to four great children living in a small waterside vil-lage in Essex. Having spent all my adult life completely healthy it then became a bit

of a shock to me when In 2006 I started feeling very unwell!Atfirstitwasjustachingjoints and muscle pains in my arms and legs and then suddenly I started getting terrible migraines forthefirsttimeinmy life and tons of mouth & nose ulcers too. After visiting my doctor countless times it became clear that he didn’t know what was wrong with me....

Two more years passed like this and I was con-tinuing to feel unwell with constant migraines, mouth ul-cers, joint and muscle pain and also a red rash appeared on my face and neck area which looked truly awful. I also found that if I went out in the sun I would feel so tired I would have to sleep much more than normal.

Feeling totally fed up I decided to research my symptoms at the library and this is where I came acrossadiseasethatfittedexactlyhowIwasfeel-ing and this disease was called LUPUS. When I firstreadthesymptomslistIwentcold.....Ihadnearly all of the symptoms listed. Armed with this info I went to see my doctor again and he agreed thatLupusseemedtofitallmysymptomsandhe would happily refer me to a specialist. At this point I can’t tell you how relived I was, Finally

after years of feeling so poorly someone was actually listening to me and I wasn’t going mad after all !Finally In September 2008 after my visit to the specialist I was diagnosed with “Lupus”and also another Disease called “Hughes Syndrome” (Which causes blood clots) and I was put on a medical treatment plan to make me feel better.

Fast forward to 2011 and I’m now happy to say that I’m back to living my life to the full again

(although i do have the odd bad day if i over do it !) and this is down to a

combination of the right Lupus & Hughes Syndrome drugs,

a healthy diet and also a bit of exercise thrown

in too !

Here are a few facts about Lupus:

lupus is a widespread and chronic autoim-mune disease causes the im-mune system to attack the body’s

own tissues and organs, including

the joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain,

blood, and skin

Symptoms may come and go. The times when a person is

havingsymptomsarecalledflares, which can range from mild to severe

Typical treatments include steroids, painkillers, and immunosuppressant’s, Ninety percent of those afflictedarewomenand80%arebetweentheagesof 15 and 45..

There are many treatments for lupus but there is no cure…yet!

If you need any more info please check out the Lupus UK website @ http://www.lupusuk.org.uk/ or The Hughes Syndrome website http://www.hughes-syndrome.org/

Symptoms of lupus vary, but some of the most

common symptoms are:

Pain or swelling in jointsMuscle pain

Fever with no known causeRed rashes, most often on the face

Chest pain when taking a deep breathHair loss

Swelling in legs or around eyesMouth ulcers

Swollen glandsFeeling very tired.

ARTICLEHealthGet George to America!

By Vikki, Jamie and George Balding

This is seven year old George Balding of Mayland, Essex.

He was born 5 weeks prematurely at St John’s Hospital, weighing in at just 3lb 2oz.

At some stage during pregnancy or the birth George suffered from damage to his brain and at 15 months George was diagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy called Hemiplegia, which mainly affects his right side of his body and speech.

Everydayactivitiesaredifficultduetothetightnessandstiffness in his muscles.

George is able to walk short distances but tires very easily and uses his buggy most of the time.

Since receiving the diagnosis we looked into all the avail-able treatments, and this is when we found out about Selec-

tive Dorsal Rhizotomy which is currently performed by Dr T S Parks at the St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri.

We applied to Dr Parks to see if George is a suitable candidate and within a few weeks we received the exciting news that George is suitable and that he had been accepted to have the SDR surgery in February 2012.

The operation, Flights accommodation and intense physiotherapy whilst in the US and upon return to the UK will cost in excess of £45,000.

As soon as George was accepted, the fundraising began, we held a Coffee morning, Quiz Night, Charity meal and Disco, Sponsored Walk, Boot sales and have a lot of events still to come which include a Sky dive with 17 people taking part, a London to Brighton Bike ride and the Mucky Race at Colchester in November.

We still have a long way to go but will do whatever it takes to raise the funds as this operation could potentially change George’s life forever and enable him to do all the simple tasks that we take for granted every day and we can say goodbye to his buggy and wheelchair forever!

If you would like to know more about George’s fundraising and progress please visit our website www.getgeorgetoamerica.com, we also have a Facebook page where you can follow our pro-gress Georges SDR Page.

Thank you in advance for your interest and support.

ARTICLEHealth Bell’s Palsy

By Kelly Sanger

About 3 years ago, I woke up one morning to find the left side of my face wouldn’t move and I couldn’t close my left eye. Panic started to set in. The first thought my husband had was, “Is she having a stroke”?

I was taken to the doctors straight away, where he diagnosed Bell’s Palsy. He talked us through what had happened to my face and explained what Bell’s Palsy is.

What is Bell’s Palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a condition where one side of the face becomes paralysed. The symptoms usually come on suddenly, but have no obvi-ous cause, but stress is said to be a link. Most people make a full recovery.

Every year, about one in 5,000 people de-velop Bell’s palsy in the UK. Anyone of any age can be affected. Both men and women are equally affected.

The symptoms of Bell’s Palsy can come on very quickly. This can be as quick as just a few hours or even overnight, and are at their worst within two days.

The main symptom is that one side of your face becomes weak or paralysed. Most people have mild earache or a pain behind their ear. You may also find that on the affected side of your face does the following...

• your eyebrow sags

• your eye is difficult to close

• your eye is very watery, or alternatively very dry

• the corner of your mouth droops, causing saliva and drinks to dribble from your mouth

• you become more sensitive to high pitched noise

When you smile, you may notice that the affected side of your face appears expressionless. The amount of weakness can vary from person to person. Some people experience a very mild weak-ness, but others may have complete paralysis. T is not uncommon to find that you cannot taste at the front of your tongue or you have an altered sense of taste.

The symptoms of Bell’s palsy occur when the nerve that controls the muscles in your face becomes inflamed or compressed. It is not known what the exact cause of this damage is.

Page 11: Christmas 2011 The Face of Chelmsford Magazine

ARTICLE Health

Bell’s palsy sufferers may find it difficult to blink and close their eyelid. This means that the surface of your eye could be at risk of drying out. You can keep your eye moist by using lubricating eye drops such as artifi-cial tears, eye ointments or eye gels. Some people try to use an eye patch or tape to keep their eye closed before going to sleep.

If you experience any of these symptoms, see your doc-tor for advice as quickly as possible.

You Snooze – You Lose!By James St Pierre.

“When the sun comes up, successful people start running” Brian Tracy

What is it with some peoples obsession with sleep? The belief that a weekend or day off some-how isn’t ‘legitimate’ unless they have lay in bed till about 10am?

I believe that people can be separated into two main categories based on the answer to this next question:Areyoua‘Snoozer’ora‘Springer’?Taketheaveragemorning, youaresoundasleep(unless you have young children!) and the alarm goes off to signal the start of your day. Do you: a) Roll over and hit the snooze button (any number of times from 1 to 15ish!) or b) Turn the alarm off and spring out of bed?

The way we start the day very often sets a pattern for the way the day unfolds. If we begrudging-ly clamber out of bed after 7 ‘snoozes’ complaining that we are ‘tired’ and mope around feeling sorry for ourselves our attitude and outlook may not be the most positive. If we turn the alarm off and habitually ‘spring’ out of bed and get the day rolling, we are mentally far more alert and set-ting ourselves up for a day of success.

Idon’twanttoseemjudgementalasIfirmlybelievethat‘Snoozers’and‘Springers’arenotspe-cific‘types’ofpeople.Moreso,thesehabitsareasymptomofalevelofmotivationwithineachindividual. These habits are a RESULT of programming (primarily self programming) that either causes you to be excited by what you may experience or achieve on any given day, or be apathet-ic to what may happen to you on any given day. There is a huge difference in mindset here.

I had the pleasure a couple of years ago of seeing Dr John Demartini speak in London and something he said was very simple and also very profound ‘Nobody has to get you out of bed in the morning to do something you love’ What are you getting out of bed in the morning for? Many people I speak to turn their noses up at waking up early and exercising or doing something that would enrich their lives, yet we have all sprung out of bed in the early hours to drive to the airport for a holiday – how many snoozes did that take?

Ifyoufindyourselfstrugglingtowakeupearlyandbeproductiveaskyourselfafewquestions.AmIpassionateaboutmylife, joborbusiness?Couldthequalityofmysleepbeimprovedby more physical exercise and better nutritional habits? Am I staying up late watching rubbish on TV that is not helping me in any way? If I HAD to get excited about one thing in the day ahead – What could that be? Finally – Where can I purchase myself an alarm clock WITHOUT a SNOOZE BUTTON!?

Review - Doctor Who ExperienceBy Sian Sanger

I recently travelled through time and space in the TARDIS, fought daleks and saved the doctor from the pandorica...again.

How you ask? the doctor who experience is a amaz-ing walk through and props expedition.

We started our experience by walking through a small props expedition, with real outfits and props used inepisodes. Then as a medi-

um size group, you enter a dark room with benches placed round a screen. As you watch a dramatical clip about the eleventh doctor and his many incredible adventures a tiny crack appears from and slowly grows bigger and bigger and at the end, the crack lights up and the screen splits apart, yes apart, and reveals a room cluttered with old boxes and junk.

the doctor as, unfortunately, we make a crush landing...in the daleks mothership. The walk through goes on, ending with an amazing 3D viewing of the pandorica disintegrating into a time vortex.

After the walk through, there’s a even bigger Expedition with more props and photo shoots and chances to get up close and personal with some of the most terrifying enemies of the doctor.

For me, a massive Doctor who fan, it was more than brilliant. I highly sug-gest you take a visit to the Doctor who experience as it opens a whole new world of imagination and excitement!

THE ELECTRICAL SHOP LIMITED 76-80 Baddow Road, Chelmsford, Essex CM2 7PL T: 01245 352585

“Powering the way to a brighter future” The strangest news story going around in these cash-strapped times is that the UK is experiencing something of an unseemly consumer rush on light bulbs. Yes, light bulbs of all things. The old incandescent filament-style bulbs are selling out in their hundreds, leaving shelves empty all over the country. Why? Well, it’s because they’ve been banned. The brightest 100 watt ones are going first, to be followed by all the other wattages (60 watt is my favorite, but then I’m a bit of a traditionalist) over the next three years to 2012. The ban prevents the manufacture and import of incandescent bulbs into the EU but not the sale of existing stocks.

It’s all part of moves by the European Union to protect the environment. Their new regulations have set minimum energy efficiency targets for bulbs, meaning that the old-fashioned filament sort is out, and we’re going to have the modern energy-efficient variety. The EU claims that this legislation will save the rough equivalent of the energy consumption of Romania.

There are many concerns being raised by various groups of disabled people, who say that the demise of the humble incandescent bulb will adversely affect them - from partially sighted people who rely on the brightness of 100 watt bulbs, which cannot be equaled with the energy-efficient alternatives, to those with conditions such as epilepsy, migraines and lupus, where it’s claimed that the more modern bulbs can worsen their symptoms.

At The Electrical Shop we still carry stock of most incandescent bulbs and as the major retailers have dropped them from their ranges we have easy access to the huge stock piles that were made prior to the ban. We also have alternatives to the normal energy saving fluorescent lamps which many people dis-like. These come in the form of halogen lamps being fitted in normal bulbs and are a great if not better alternative to the incandescent bulb.

If you have questions regarding the above subject please feel free to pop in we will be more than happy to advise you and recommend the right products for your needs

It is possibly the most lethal and most feared weapon in the world, and as proven in 1945, can prove to be a real statement of intent during wartime, whether it is used or not. The nuclear bomb isaWMD(weaponofmassdestruction)thatcreatesanuclearfission(’splittingtheatom’)ofhigh energy upon impact with its target, with even the smallest of these bombs often carrying the ability to wipe out entire cities, and creating a giant version of the iconic ‘mushroom cloud’. Whilemodern-dayusageofthenuclearbombisburiedunderalegalminefield,andoftenused(andkept)bybignationsonlyasathreat,whowasitthatfirstinventedthiskillingmachine,andwhy did they do it?

It may come as a surprise to many that did not know before that a key player in the development of this weapon was famed scientist Albert Einstein, and while it was unclear if he actually conceived the idea of a nuclear bomb, he (who had defected Nazi Germany to be-come a US citizen) and a group of fellow scientists wrote a letter to American President Roosevelt on 2 August 1939 (little over a month before World War II started), warning him of recent Nazi German developments of purifying ‘uranium-235′,sparkingfearsthattheycouldbecreatinganweaponwiththematerial.

In response to this during the war, the US government (working alongside al-lies the United Kingdom and Canada) commissioned a team of scientists (led by Columbia University’s Harold Urey, but not including Einstein, who wanted the allies to win the war, but did not believe in using such a powerful and dangerous weapon) to develop an atomic bomb for them (known as ‘The Manhattan Pro-ject’), which soon progressed into the more powerful nuclear bomb.

While the Nazis never bore the brunt of this creation, America’s main rivals during the war, Japan, did, with the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945 (with nuclear bombs codenamed ‘Little Boy’ and ‘Fat Man’, respectively), an event which went a long way towards forcing a Japanese surren- der and ending the war, though debate over the ethics of deploying t h e b o m b (and killing many innocent civilians in both cities) rages on even today around the world.

Following World War II,

the USA, along with the now-defunct Soviet Union, were encouraged to come up with treaties to reduce the amount of testing done on these weapons, having witnessed the destruction they can cause. This didn’t stop tests completely, though, and the Soviets posted an still world record when they deployed the ‘Tsar’ for a test in 1961, with the device letting off an es- timated 57 million tonnes of TNT (an explosive material) on an uninhabited island in north Russia, an explosion which has never been matched since. With numbers of public protests on the matter dur- ing the past few decades it is likely to remain that way, with the threat and presence of nuclear weaponry having decreased, and the two US attacks on Japan in 1945 remain the only instances of nuclear weapons being used in com-bat.

Today, 9 nations (USA, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, Russia, and the UK) are known as owning nuclear bombs, and so far none of them have broken major international regulation (such as ‘WMD treaties’)

ARTICLELiving The Playground Mafia

by Sarah Tucker

SarahTuckeristheauthorofafictionalnovel‘ThePlaygroundMafia’,whichhitanervebecause there was so much unspoken emo-tional truth in it that it has sold over half a million copies. Sarah does not claim to be a psychologist or counsellor, her tips have developed through the research and some direct experience of playground politics over the years. She receives between 50 to 100 emails each week on playground politics and has collected together here some advice from those she has interviewed over the years, from teachers, parents, mafiamembersandvictimsof playground politics as well as some words of wisdom from the children themselves. This list of ten tips might help you with playground issues and over competitive parents.

Remember the only thing you have in com-mon with the other mothers at your child’s class is that they have children the same age as yours.

That is where the similarities end. They are notyourfriendsorconfidents.Don’ttreatthem that way. Or feel you need to treat them that way. This causes unnecessary pressure.

Alwayskeepyourowncounsel.Confideinyour friends out of school, never those in the playground no matter how sympathetic they may be. You are going to meet them every day for the next nine years. Do not mention any marriageorfinancialoremotionaldifficulties.

Furthermore, do not act as ear to any gossip mongers either.

Just because your son/daughter picks a best friend, you do not need to make best friends with the parents.

Parents often feel obliged to do just that. Don’t. It is not necessary.

4. The teachers are extremely aware of theplaygroundmafiaandIgotmanyanec-dotes for the book from this source. If you need advice, always speak to the head teacher or the form teacher about your child. You don’t need to network with other mothers who –iftheyaremafia–willtreatinformationaspower.

5. Never arrive early for pick up. More opportunity for you to be pounced on.

6. Alwayspolitebutopaque, asinquitedull. If they cannot grab onto anything about you, good or bad, they will neither be threat-ened by you, interested to cultivate you as oneoftheirmembers.Mostmafiawerebulliesas children and haven’t kicked the habit. As childrenyoucouldhavehadafightintheplayground, as an adult you are likely to get a GBH assault charge. So no matter how much they snipe, ignore them. Focus on your child.

7. Beawarethatthereisnomafia‘type’– they do not look like bullies, they come in

all shapes and sizes, may have had or not had successful careers. The one thing they have in common is that they need to get a life, stop taking themselves so seriously and focus on their child’s development and no one else’s.

They need above all to mind their OWN busi-ness.

8. Mummy blogs and networks are not necessarily the best way to work out issues. If you need to befriend a mother, make it one who has children two years above

9. that of your own,who you genuinely like and trust. She is not in direct competi-tion with you and will have been through the playgroundmafiaissuesherself.

10. See the funny side of all situations. I met a mother who googled all the chil-dren’s parents in her class and only asked those children around for playdates who had parents with high disposable incomes. This is more common than people might think. These parent types live vicariously through their children on many levels.

11. PlaygroundMafiawillalwaysclaimthey are being overly competitive because it’s necessary to get into good schools and they must push their child and further his progress. They do nothing of the sort. All good par-entsencouragetheirchildtodowell,mafiasystematically try to undermine other children so they do less well, and also undermine the confidenceofotherparents.Thatisnotgoodparenting, this is politics. Most playground politics occurs when the children are at infant and primary school.

There is less need to mix with other parents at secondary school so less opportunity for theplaygroundmafiatosnipe.Enjoyyourchildren’schildhood.Don’tletthemafiaruinit. And if all else fails, just drop your child at

the school gate and pick up avoiding all eye contact with any other mother.

Sarah has now devised an APP for mums to usenotonlytodetectmafiamumsbutalsoavoid becoming one themselves. As part of anationwide‘mummymafia’campaigninconjunction with Red Balloon, the organisa-tion which focuses on the recovery of bullied children, Sarah is asking mums throughout the UKtotakethemummymafiatestandsendinthe results to her at [email protected].

Alternatively send them to her website www.sarahtucker-website.com on the comments section, with anecdotes about some of the playground politics you have personally experienced.

Sarah says, “Tackling playground politics is a step closer to making sure the time in the playground is something new mothers can enjoy and look forward to, rather than dread and navigate around. I believe children bully because they witness the grownups doing the same - lead by example is always the best policy.”You can plan most things for a wed-ding with a good degree of certainty but in the UK, and especially in Scotland, you can’t know in advance what the weather will do. Providing your wedding ceremony and recep-tion venue are indoors the weather shouldn’t provide that many problems – but indoor pho-tography can be restrictive and not representa-tive of the day. No doubts about it - there are moments during the big day when you would like to be outside.

Natural light and the charm of your surround-ings at that very special venue you hired - at great expense - will be important elements of your wedding photographs. If you have hired a venue in a Scottish castle with views out over mountains and sea or at a country house hotel with its beautifully manicured gardens

Page 30: Christmas 2011 The Face of Chelmsford Magazine

then you will want to capture them in your photographs.

An experienced photographer will have a “Plan A” and a “Plan B” (bad weather). And (s)he’ll be prepared for both plans to go “out of the window”! Your photographer should have researched the location and know which locations to use in any weather.

On what is merely a grey, cloudy day a skilled wedding photographer will know how to make the best of the light. In fact for outdoor portraits this is the best sort of light – beautiful even light that’s kind to any face. Stormy skies add drama and a professional will know how tobalanceartificiallightbutretainthatdramain the sky (just one more argument against leaving the job to friends and amateurs, but that’s another wedding photography story!) More problems present themselves when the rain starts to fall and the wind starts to blow, and for the bride, problems for her dress and hairdo in particular.

There are several options available to the wed-ding couple if the weather should turn against them and their wedding photographer’s best efforts.

One obvious strategy to insure against heavy rain and having to be photographed in interi-ors indistinguishable from a thousand others wedding venues is to choose a venue where exteriors protected by a high roof are avail-able. Think pergolas, bandstands and canopied doorways. Photographers love doorways; the lightfallsoffquicklyandthatbeautifulsoftlight is back.

Indoors by a window is the next best thing. Window light makes for dramatic images – a large window with a wood panelled or stone wall and all sorts of possibilities open up. Photography is about light and this setting is wonderful.

In the absence of roofed exteriors it may make sense to have large white umbrellas on hand – I always carry several. Apart from protecting against the rain they diffuse the top lightandreflectbackthebottomlight–softlight again! You may even want to bring your own umbrellas in other colours to match the bridesmaid’s dresses. Plenty of clips and pins for holding hair in place and battening down gowns won’t go amiss either. The wind can be used to our advantage too – with a bit of cover that natural wind machine can be useful!

Thought Of The Day“Before us lie two paths - honesty and dishonesty. The shortsighted embark on the dishonest path; the wise on the honest. For the wise know the truth; in helping others we help ourselves; and in hurting others we hurt ourselves. Character overshadows money, and trust rises above fame. Honesty is still the best policy.”

Travel Review Taranaki NEW ZEALANDBy Staci Holmes

When I was asked by your lovely new Editor Kelly Sanger to write a travel review for The Face of Chelmsford I thought it would be easy. I was WRONG!

Taranaki is one of the most beautiful places in the World (I am slightly baiased) and reducing all the amazing things available down into one article is so hard! Taranaki is on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. We are the little bump you see sticking out on the map.

In a single day you can go skiing on the beautiful Mt Egmont/Taranaki and 20 minutes later be sunbathing at the gorgeous beachesthatdefineourarea.Youcanvisitthe pristine parks and the world renowned Pukeiti Gardens – home of the most beautiful

Rhododendrons.

We also have an

amazing Museum called Puke Ariki where collec-

tions with renowned reputations reside. Our main shopping centre is a town called New Plymouth which has attractions ranging from Childrens adventure playgrounds to restau-

rants and Nightclubs for adults.

New Plymouth has an an-nual Fes-

tival of the Lights

which is one of the

most beauti-ful things

to visit. The lovely Puke-

kura Park is adorned with

lights and anima-tions that really

capture the delight of children young and old. During the Festival there is often musicians playing throughout the day and night creating an enchanting atmosphere.

Put the bun-dle into the washing machine and put it on a cool wash (30 degrees), remember to turn off the spin!! Once wash has finished, hang your blinds up and allow them to drip dry, putting a towel underneath them to catch the drips!! Attach the weights and allow to dry!! Lovely, clean and fresh!!!

Ask The Accountant

Q. My cafe was badly damaged in the recent riots, but my loyal customers have collected £3,000tohelpmeopenthebusinessasquicklyaspossible.HowshouldItreatthissumfortaxpurposes? Is it a personal gift, or a contribution to be set against my repair costs?

A. The taxman would view that this gift from your customers should be treated as income for your business for income tax or corporation tax purposes. You are likely to have a lot of repair expenditure to set against your income for the current period, so you may well not have a profittodeclareevenafterincludingthegiftasincome.

Q. I’ve received a tax refund for 2010/11, but I’m worried that it’s not correct as I usually have tax to pay each year. Also I haven’t even submitted my 2010/11 tax return yet.

A. You are right to be worried about the tax refund, as the Taxman’s computer has issued some incorrect refunds recently. If you normally complete a self-assessment tax return but also have some income taxed under PAYE, the computer should wait until your tax return has been sub-mitted before calculating the tax to be refunded. In a few cases this has not happened, and the tax refund has been based only on the taxpayer’s PAYE income. Please ask us to check the tax calculationthatshouldhavearrivedwithyourrefundcheque.

Q.TheTaxOfficehaswrittentomesaying£2,800taxIowewillbecollectedbyrestrictingmy PAYE code for 2012/13. What does this mean?

A. The Taxman is now permitted to collect up to £3,000 of unpaid tax or overpaid tax credits through PAYE codes. Your PAYE code tells your employer how much of your income to treat as tax free, and thus how much tax to deduct from the rest. A common PAYE code for 2011/12 would be 747L, which gives you tax free income of £7,475 for the year. If you owe £2,800 in unpaidtax,andyourhighestmarginaltaxrateis40%,yourtaxfreeincomewillbereducedby£7,000(£2,800/40%),leavingyouwithtaxfreeincomeof£475andaPAYEcodeof47L.The numbers will be slightly different in 2012/13, but essentially you will pay more tax each month from April 2012 until the tax debt is eliminated.

The Badlands Guardian may look just like a human head with an Indian headress. Vis-ible only from the air, this so called optical illusion is in fact a drainage feature created by wind & water erosion on the soft clay rich soil.

It is a geomorphological feature located near Medicine Hat in the south east corner of Alberta, Canada. Viewed from the air, the feature bears a strong resemblance to a human head wearing a full native American headdress, facing directly westward. Be-cause of additional man-made structure, it also appears to be wearing earphones. The

apparent earphones are a road and an oil well, which were recently installed.

The head is a drainage feature created through erosion of soft, clay-rich soil by the action of wind and water. The arid badlands aretypifiedbyinfrequentbutintenserain-showers, sparse vegetation and soft sedi-ments. The ‘head’ may have been created during a short period of fast erosion imme-diately following intense rainfall. Although the image appears to be a convex feature, it is actually concave — that is, a valley, an instance of the Hollow-Face illusion.

Furthermore, new medical research suggests that the consumption of lycopene – the stuff that makes tomatoes red – may prevent cancer. Lycopene is part of the family of pigments called carotenoids, which are natural compounds that create the colours of fruits and vegetables. For example, beta carotene is the orange pigment in carrots. As with essential amino acids, they are not produced by the human body. Lyco-pene us the most powerful antioxidant in the carotenoid family and, with vitamins C and E, protect us from the free radicals that degrade many parts of the body.

A fruit is the edible part of the plant that contains the seeds, while a vegetable is the edible stems, leaves, and roots of the plant.

Cooked tomatoes have higher concentrations of lycopene than non-cooked tomatoes.
