JUNE 2012
Christ Presbyterian Church
March 2012
Even the small, innocuous things can be deceptive, like
the way we print “9:30am Worship” on the church
calendar. One could not be faulted for thinking this means worship begins at that time and ends
approximately one hour later––is this not how it
typically goes? Neither could one be blamed for
thinking worship happens in a sanctuary––is that where
we usually gather to praise God?
Then why is it that at the end of the Gospel of
Matthew, when he disciples “saw Jesus and worshiped
him,” they weren’t in Temple or synagogue but on a
mountain? And curious how the psalmist would have
us “bless the Lord at all times” with
“praise…continually in [the] mouth?”––such praise
doesn’t seem to have set starting or ending times.
Poet Mary Oliver says,
My work is loving the world
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird––
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the specked sand.
Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,
which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished…
Are astonishment and worship close to the same
thing? If sunflowers, hummingbird and quickening yeast
are enough to incite amazement––how for the God-
sensitive they are!––then worship must be less about
time and place than perspective and orientation. “Let
me keep my mind on what matters.”
This summer we will worship outdoors in the Pavilion
a blessed three times (weather permitting!). The first
of these services is June 24. The next two will be July 29 and August 26. The service will still start at
9:30am, but the location will be the theater of the
Creator’s glory. The breeze and sticky heat, the bird
songs and distant children’s voices won’t be
distractions, but calls to worship.
If God calls us to worship from outdoor pavilions, I
wonder where God isn’t calling us to worship?
A blessed summer to you all,
Mary Oliver, “Messenger,” from Thirst, (Boston: Beacon, 2006), 1.
The Session has called a
Congregational Meeting
10:30 a.m., Sunday, June 10
for the purpose of
considering adjustments
to Pastor Reeves' terms of call.
All members are encouraged
to attend.

be updated with a new design. -Sue Congdon
FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE
We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so
that you also may have fellowship with us.
And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son,
Jesus Christ. 1 John 1: 3
May 19th was the date of our last Fellowship Event,
we held a Progressive Dinner, which was enjoyed
by all who attended. We began the dinner at CPC
with appetizers and moved on to Beth & Dushan
Bouchek’s home for salads. From there we
travelled to the home of Charlotte & Bill Wood for
the main dish and then Liz & Mac McArthur’s for
dessert. The Fellowship Committee would like to
extend a heartfelt thank you to our host homes!!
We had over 40 people attend this event and the
graciousness of our hosts was outstanding. Thank you to everyone who provided a dish for the
Progressive Dinner as well, the food was fabulous!
JUNE 1ST CAPTAIN’S GAME: As of May 22nd
we have 32 tickets sold. This has always been a
popular evening out and we thank Bill Gripp for his
leadership in planning this event.
JULY 29TH CPC’S ANNUAL CHURCH
PICNIC / GOLF OUTING. We are currently in
the planning stages for this event. Please keep an
eye out for future announcements in the weekly
bulletin and Chimes newsletter. If you are
interested in helping us plan the picnic we would
love to have your input.
NEXT FELLOWSHIP MEETING: JUNE 12TH AT 6:00PM our meetings last 1 hour. They are
short and sweet, but very productive. We will also
begin preliminary plans for our fall 2012 Fellowship
schedule. Please contact one of our current team

The Session began its May 15 meeting with worship in
the sanctuary, led by Matt. Matt offered thoughts on his
appreciation of Ascension Day, the day that remembers
the risen Christ ascending to heaven and promising his
followers the gift of the Holy Spirit
Frank Lyon reported that the Sunday Morning Study
Group committee had received about ten responses to
their survey and would run it two more Sundays.
The best part of the night came when the Session took
up the covenant the congregation made with Pastor Matt
when they voted for him as pastor and Matt accepted the
call. Part of that covenant said the congregation would
evaluate his terms of call six months into his ministry to
determine whether the church’s finances would allow for
their adjustment. By unanimous vote the Session
confirmed our faith and confidence in Matt and will make
a recommendation to the congregation for their vote
after worship on June 10, 2012.
We are looking into having trained Elders or others stay
after the service to speak to those who need prayer or
conversation. This is something we used to do and desire
to bring back.
Your Clerk of session
Chuck Scott
Thank you! Thank you!
Knight and I extend our
gratitude to the CPC family.
Tuesday mornings we think
of the prayer group, so
faithful and powerful on
behalf of so many, including
the Washburn family. Last
month we were both
moved, and strengthened,
by your loving support with
visits, cards, phone calls to
Meredith while she was at
Hillcrest Hospital. (She has
“moms” in my absence!)
I’m happy to report she is
home now, benefitting from
physical therapy; a very
lucky, and thankful, lady. It
was so good to see many of
you the few days I was in
the Cleveland area, and
especially good to worship
with you on Sunday
morning. We’re thankful for
you that you have such a
fine pastor in Matt, and a
young family enjoying life
in the manse. Blessings on
you all.

The Deacons met on May 7th with
Joy Kule leading us with devotions
from The Daily Bread and Jim
opening in prayer. Pastor Matt spoke
about a committee being formed which will evaluate our Sunday
mornings. They will be considering ways to enhance Sunday
morning worship as well as Fellowship and Adult Education. A
questionnaire has been included in our Sunday bulletin for all
members and friends to fill out.
The Deacons are considering the following:
New signs directing drivers to our handicapped parking
spaces, so those not familiar with our church will be better
informed regarding parking.
A new coffee pot, so those of you who prefer decaf will
now have brewed coffee.
A new location for the coffee pot. This will enable folks to
get through the line quicker.
Beth Bouchek sent birthday and graduation cards to our college
students along with planning for Vacation Bible School. All Easter
flowers were sold, and more were sent to our Shut-Ins.
The Outreach committee purchased food, gas cards and Easter gifts for the family we are currently helping. We received a thank
you note from them. A motion was made and passed to continue
helping them. Eleven men from our church helped them with yard
work as well. The men really enjoyed the day. CPC’s generosity
was once again evident by the large quantities of clothing donated
to the City Mission and Glenville Presbyterian Church, for their
Mother’s Day sale.
Cyndie Tropf informed us that we need more folks to help with
ushering for weekday services such as memorial services, funerals,
weddings etc. Please consider helping with this if you are available.

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTS JUNE 10 Preschool-1st Grade
Ready for a daily dose of Good News? Join us this summer! Fishin’ on a Mission with Jesus features a series of
Bible lessons that will help our Pre-Schoolers through First Graders get to know Jesus and His message.
The theme verse for Fishin’ on a Mission with Jesus is, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matthew 4:19. Each Sunday, your children will learn additional verses that teach important lessons about how
to grow in their faith and witness to others about Jesus. From the Book of Acts they will learn life
applications such as: witnessing through prayer, witnessing through praise, witnessing with believers and
witnessing in faith. - Jen Congdon

The worship committee has once again decided to
hold our Sunday morning worship outdoors in our
pavilion three times during the summer months.
The dates for outdoor worship are June 24, July 29,
and August 26. In the event of rain or extreme heat,
worship will be held in our sanctuary as normal.
As we plan for these services, worship committee
wants to assure the CPC family that your comfort
and accessibility have been included in our planning.
We will have shaded seating in and around our
pavilion, plenty of ice water, and valet parking. (We will put in for a gentle breeze as well.) Please take
advantage of the valet parking that will be available.
You may drive up the manse drive, get out at the
pavilion, and an attendee will park your car for you
and retrieve it when the service has ended.
For those who love to feel the sun on the back of
their neck, we will set you a seat in our earthbound
shade-free section. The picnic tables and benches
will be spread about and available to use. Or, if you
prefer, bring a blanket and sit on the grass.
Please consider inviting friends to this unique
worship experience. Any of these dates would be a
great opportunity for friends and visitors to
experience the blessing that is the church of Jesus
Christ, and the love and joy of Christ that is so
bountiful here at CPC. If you have any particular
concerns that would discourage you from coming,
please speak with Greg McCandless, Jim Hart, or
Pastor Reeves, and we will do all we can to meet
your needs. We look forward to worshiping
together as God’s children in the spontaneity and
beauty of His creation. -Greg McCandless
JOIN US JUNE 3RD FOR A
MINISTRY CELEBRATION!
At our 9:30am Worship
Service, we will celebrate all
children, youth, adult and
music ministries. After the
service, we invite you to stay
for a light breakfast to honor
these volunteers.
THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
YOUTH GROUP
Wrapped up the end of the school
year with glow bowling at Ernst
Lanes in Chardon. Each Sunday
night, 5 – 8 of our youth along with
friends met to socialize, participate
in Bible lessons, enjoy snacks and
end the night with a game of
sardines. One of the first items on
business was to create a covenant
for this year’s youth. Carson
McCandless & Emma Fischer
presented this covenant to the
Session. During meetings in April,
members of Christ Church came in
to give their testimonials to our
youth. A special trip to Breckenridge
was made to meet with Betty Gray
& Winnie Martinson. Other events
this past year included a lock-in with
a breakfast served by some men in
our church, laser tag, Christian band concerts and a river walk with Rob
Russell & Linda Russell.
Although the youth will not be
meeting weekly over the summer,
special events will include training
and volunteering for VBS,
participating in the 4th of July parade
and a day at Pioneer Waterland.
Big thanks to Rob and Lindsay
Russell for all they gave to youth
ministry this year!

CHRIST CHURCH 2012
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
Cale Zimmermann
Cale graduated from Chardon High School. While there he
participated in football for 3 years, was in Interact for 2, helped
out in the guidance department all 4 years, read to 1st graders
senior year, and also wrote for the school newspaper. Presently
undecided on a major, he will attend Bowling Green State
University in the fall.
"With my faith in Christ I have been able to stay strong and keep
going throughout high school. He has been there every step of the
way. God will be there every step of the way again as I start a new
chapter of my life. With the strength of God I'll be able to succeed at
anything I try."
John Martillotta
John is a Graduate of Chardon High School. While there, he
played varsity baseball, basketball, and golf. He was involved in
Chardon's Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council,
Interact, National Honor Society, and Service Days at Highbrook
Lodge. He will attend the University of Toledo to major in mechanical engineering with a minor in entrepreneurship. He
will also play baseball there and pursue his dream of playing
baseball professionally. Phil 4:13.
"My faith in Christ had grown throughout my high school years. I'm
much more open about it than I used to be. My faith had allowed me
to attempt to be the best role model and person in general I could be
throughout my high school career. Being a disciplined Christian has
helped my whole life develop and had helped me realize the power of
the word. Faith in Christ simply means allowing God to continue to
work through me however he plans to do so. All I have to do is trust
him and he'll guide me to where I should be going."
11
Audrey Martillotta
Audrey is a 2012 graduate of Chardon High School. Throughout
high school, she was involved in Student Council, National
Honor Society, Interact, Prom Committee, Fellowship of
Christian Athletes, and JV and Varsity Tennis. She worked at a
law firm during her junior and senior year (Thrasher, Dinsmore,
& Dolan) and Alpine Valley Ski Resort as a rental barn associate.
She will attend The Ohio State University in the fall and plans to
major in business.
"My faith in Christ has grown immensely throughout my high school
years. I have gotten so much closer to God and go to Him for just
about everything now. I pray much more often now than I ever did
before, and know that I can trust that the Lord has something good
planned for me. Faith in Christ means trusting in the Lord and
knowing that He has a plan for me. I should be patient and let the
Lord work in His ways to make me into the person I am meant to
be".
Jared Lyon
Jared graduated from Kirtland High School, where he was on the
varsity soccer team all four years. He also played on the varsity
football team, helping them win the 2011 State Championship.
He will attend the University of Findlay in the fall, majoring in
physical therapy and playing soccer for them.
"My faith in Christ has led me to put all my trust in him and to not
fret the small things. As I look to the future I know that whatever
happens, happens for a reason and God will work it out for me to be
the person HE wants me to be".
Stacey Everhart (not pictured)
Stacey graduated from West Geauga High School in Chesterland. She participated in The Kiwanis
Key club, Latin club and 13 years of girl-scouting. She was also involved with the spring musical for
two years. She plans to study Biology at Ohio State this fall.
"Christian faith has been a source of stability and comfort in my life thus far. It has pushed me to
strive to be my best. In the future I hope that my faith in Christ will help me to create lasting bonds
with others".
12
Brittain Elswick
Brittain graduated from Chardon High School. She was involved
in band, National Honor Society, Powder Puff, and was a class
officer, among other things. She will attend The Ohio State
University where she will major in Archaeology and Historical
Linguistics.
"God has influenced my high school years by presenting opportunities
for helping others, giving me a sense of right and wrong, and helping
me to connect with various people on a more personal level. As for
the future, I think that God will be an ever-guiding presence in my life.
It is a comfort knowing, that one day, God will welcome me with open
arms into his kingdom of joyous eternity".
Stephen Douglas
Stephen is a graduate of Chardon High School. He played 3
years on the CHS varsity football team and 2 years on the
baseball team, and is currently working on his green belt in
Taekwondo. In High School, he was in Student Council and was
in the Freshmen Mentoring Program. He is currently working at
Quail Hollow Country Club. He will attend the University of
Cincinnati in the DAAP Program for Architecture.
"I feel so close to Christ. My faith in Him has helped me through both
the good and bad times. I have no clue where I'd be right now if I
didn't have him in my life. Being a part of church is important to me.
My faith is strong. I know I need Christ in my heart throughout college
and my life."

HUMOROUS STORIES FROM
THE PEW By Cyndie Tropf
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of
listening to Ruth Scharlotte tell me
something funny that happened to her
while serving communion a number of
years ago. I told her I too had a funny thing happen to me while serving
communion. It got me thinking…my
family and Ruth surely are not the only
ones to have experienced some funny
events while at church or while with our
church family. Now, you are probably
wondering what funny things happened
to Ruth, and to me. Well, I’ll tell you my
story, but Ruth’s will have to come from
her later in this column, or you’ll just
have to ask her! Any of you who have
had the privilege of serving communion
know that with great precision and
unison the servers walk down the aisles
and sit simultaneously on the front pew.
Everyone can see the six servers all
sitting in reverence waiting to rise
together. When Rev. Herbert was our
pastor, I was to serve communion. I
dressed in my best tweed suit and wore
my cherished charm bracelet with about
100 charms hanging from it. I placed my
hands in my lap after sitting and when it
was time to rise in unison I couldn’t
remove my right hand from my lap as my
“Redwood Tree” charm from the
Sequoia National Forrest was caught on
my tweed skirt! Trying to refrain from
laughing too hard, my fellow female
elder and friend offered her assistance,
but neither of us could remove the
Redwood Tree charm from my skirt!
Therefore, I had to stay seated while the
other five elders rose and left to serve
communion without me! I was very
embarrassed knowing everyone saw me
sitting there by myself. Now I am asking
all of you to submit your stories to me
for a monthly article in Chimes. Don’t
be shy. I don’t have to use your name if
you’d prefer, just give me your story. I
loved hearing Ruth’s story and hopefully
you enjoyed mine, let me hear yours
too.
LOCAL MISSION
Doug Orosz is a co-worker of our own Shelley Brown. He
works as a Geauga County Deputy. Doug owns a large truck
that he takes to disaster areas throughout the Midwest,
loaded with supplies for these areas. He does this on his
own without taking time from his full-time job as a Deputy
and a Middlefield business owner. Shelley has assured us that
he could use items to take with him. I talked to Doug and
Gina who travel together to deliver these supplies to the
disaster areas. Some of the items that they could use are:
Hygiene supplies: toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair
brushes, combs, deodorant
Cleaning supplies: bleach, detergents, gloves, buckets, mops
Paper supplies: diapers, tissues, toilet paper, paper
towels, large plastic bags
Gas cards to help fuel the truck. (Most truck stops take all gas cards.)
There will be a collection place in the Fellowship Hall for
designating the items to help with this local mission.
Thank you for your consideration,
-Carol Hong

MEN’S FELLOWSHIP OUTREACH
I guess I have to start back on a
Monday night in February to be exact.
I was the session representative to
the Deacon’s meeting and the
Deacon’s had a special guest from the
Geauga Family services- the volunteer coordinator (Sara
Shininger). She went on to explain just how she knew of
families with needs and tries to find volunteers to help
them. Well that night I think not only did it bring back old
ideas of outreach that we had thought about in the past but
it brought up new opportunities of outreach and fellowship
for the men of the church. Jim Kule contacted Sara in April
and told her that we would like to possibly do something on
a monthly basis but as a group not just the lone volunteer
for a specific task.
That brings us to, the damp and what started out as a
dreary day, April 21st a Saturday Morning. But this wasn’t
just any Saturday morning; we had a dozen volunteers with
coffee in hand, landscaping tools, power washer, wheel
barrels and such. Our mission “that we had chosen to
accept” (or possibly God picked for us?) was to be an
elderly lady’s home off of route 44 near Punderson. We
arrived to a spry older lady who welcomed us with more
coffee and later on donuts from Middlefield.
We proceeded to clean up her yard for her, power washed
the whole house, removed and painted her shutters and just
over all glorified the landscape. I am not sure who was more
pleased, the lady whose house we helped fix up or the men
who did the “fixing”. I think I got more out of using my God
given talents for these small tasks than what little we really
did to beautify the landscape and home of this elderly lady.
And last but not least, those of us who were able went out
to lunch in Burton. That’s where we savored what had just
happened that morning. Oh yes and we were hungry too!
We hope to continue with this outreach, so please stay
tuned for our next adventure.
Just one of God’s helping hands that morning;
-Frank Lyon
Dear Church Family,
We are so grateful for the
kindness you have shown us
during this difficult time. Grief is
pervasive and tenacious, but
the outpouring of your love and
concern for us has modified our
anguish. The numerous cards,
phone calls, emails, visits, gifts of
food and flowers, the prayer
shawl, the special occasion
celebrations you gave us and
the endless prayers offered on
our behalf, have all comforted
and sustained us.
(Matthew 25:40)
Thank you. God Bless You,
Clyde Family
