CHRIST CHRONICLE
Christ Lutheran Church and School
7701 Candelaria Road NE
From the Pastor
Dear friends,
“I AM the resurrection and the life,” says the Lord, “He who believes in me,
though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me
shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)
Bottom line, that’s what it’s really all about – this faith we call Christianity.
It’s all about life, and death, and life. In the midst of this Lenten Season,
beginning with ashes and ending at the Cross, we deliberately focus on our
own mortality. “From dust you were formed and to dust you shall return.”
Our mortal body will fail us and death will come. The hopeless pit of death
is ever before us. Our sin drags us down into the pit and we are lost. That
is why we need Christ!
Christ lived, Christ died, Christ lives again! He is the Great I AM, the resur-
rection and the life! Our own mortality is swallowed up by His immortality!
By His death on the cross He destroyed the power of death and gives hope
to the hopeless, and life to the lifeless.
The journey to the Cross during Lent takes us through “The Valley of the
Shadow of Death,” through
the highs and lows of our life
– the joys and celebrations,
the sin and the sorrow. From
ashes and dust to blood and
tears. The journey leaves as
at the foot of the Cross, stand-
ing beneath the bloodstained
feet of Jesus, our Savior, who
gives us everything in His
death -- His love, His for-
giveness, His mercy and
grace, His very Body and
Blood – Everything.
I do not deserve it, you do not deserve it. He gives it anyway – Freely,
Openly, with unbounded love. Take the time and look at His thorn pierced
brow, His smitten and afflicted body, His nail pierced hands and feet, and

his spear pierced side, and know that death does not hold Him. The hope-
less pit of death is not His resting place. “Though He die, yet shall He live!”
The Cross, His Cross, drives us to the very heart of His conversation with
Martha: “Everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. DO YOU
BELIEVE THIS?”
The answer is found in the Cross
of Jesus Christ! The victory of life
flows out of the sacrifice of
death. Remember: His life, His
death, His resurrection! They are
now ours: Our life – gifted by
Him, Our death – covered by His
blood, Our resurrection – empow-
ered by His resurrection. Life,
Death, and Life! Do you believe
This?
“Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, and mortal life shall cease, Amaz-
ing Grace shall then prevail In heaven’s joy and peace.” Yes Lord, I believe!
I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and the God of
the living!
Take the Lenten journey. Meet at the Cross on Good Friday – stare into the
Empty Tomb on Easter, and know Jesus gave everything for you!
In Christ,
Pastor Neal Groeling

CHRIST CHRONICLE
From the Principal
Mark von Soosten
If March is here, we must be in the
season of Lent. It’s not always a
season of the church year that we look forward
to with the same excitement that we have in Ad-
vent. Then we are getting ready for Christmas,
with all of the decorations, parties, and presents
that come with it.
During Lent we sometimes feel like we have to
be somber, calm, or repentant. We may be fo-
cusing on our sins, which are, of course, the rea-
son Jesus had to suffer and die during Holy
Week, which is on the horizon. That is all good
and well, but try explaining that to a class of 5 or
6 year-olds. Of course, they know that they
make mistakes, but usually their focus is not on
the sadness, but the excitement that comes
next…Easter and the Resurrection.
Perhaps we can learn a lesson from those little
ones. After all, Jesus tells us in Matthew 18:3
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become
like little children, you will never enter the king-
dom of heaven.”
What a joy it is to see their faces light up when
they talk about the resurrection and the empty
tomb. I am blessed to have the chance to share
that message with our students and their fami-
lies. Thanks to everyone that continues to sup-
port our school so that we can teach about the
entire church year.
Join us this month for some fun events includ-
ing: The Diamonds and Denim auction spon-
sored by our Parent-Teacher League on Satur-
day, March 12 starting at 5:30 p.m., and the
teacher-sponsored Fellowship meal on Wednes-
day, March 16 followed by a concert performed
by the Martin Luther High School Concert Choir
and Troubadours from Greendale, Wisconsin at
7:00. We look forward to seeing you!
In Christ, Mark von Soosten

WHERE O DEATH IS YOUR VICTORY? 1 Corinthians 15:55 O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH,
WHERE IS YOUR STING? The sting of death is sin,
and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to
God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Je-
sus Christ!!! 1 Corinthians 15:55-57.
Our Brother and faithful servant Dr. Erich Helge
recently finished his earthly journey and departed
for his eternal journey in Heaven above. We cele-
brated his life in worship of our Lord Jesus Christ
and with fellowship just this past Monday.
Many of us had the privilege of seeing him in the
days, weeks and months prior to his death. I
promise if you saw him you saw a man who though
he had diminished significantly physically stood
boldly in stature spiritually.
One of my favorite things he said to Pastor was
“Erich Helge is doing great; this body in which he is
imprisoned, not so good.” Erich Helge lived life
gracefully spreading the Good News of Jesus
Christ wherever he went. He also died gracefully
while continuing to spread the Good News of Jesus
Christ wherever he went.
I will miss him but know and look forward to being
reunited with him in Heaven in celebration and
worship of our God of Grace and Mercy. I am hum-
bly gracious and thankful for his mentoring and
teaching to not only Beth and me, but my two girls
as well.
As Erich was dying he made me think of both my
Mom and Dad as I would think of the time when
they were both dying. Neither Mom nor Dad
feared death. Mom would share with me that she
felt it was her duty to share Jesus in the way she

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 5
FROM THE YOUTH DIRECTOR
by Leslie Helge
It is Wednesday, February 17th. I sit at my com-
puter writing my article to share with you. The
time is drawing near for Dr. Helge to enter into
heaven. The words I long to give you come from
the beautiful hymn “Abide with Me”. The words
written by Henry F. Lyte 1847, music: Eventide
by William H. Monk 1861. God’s continued
blessings on your Lenten journey to the cross of
Jesus.
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word;
But as Thou dwell’st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.
Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings,
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea—
Come, Friend of sinners, and thus bide with me.
Thou on my head in early youth didst smile;
And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow-
er?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with
me.
(Continued on page 12)
We continue our Lenten journey through the month of March, culminating in our Easter cel-ebration March 27. How wonderful to wake up each morning and go to sleep each night knowing that we are loved by our God so much that He sent His one and only Son to die on the cross for our sins and then rise again from the grave giving us eternal life!
On March 6 the bell choir will play “When I Sur-vey the Wondrous Cross.” On March 13 the choir will sing “What Wondrous Love.” March 20 is Palm Sunday and the choir will sing “Behold, the King of Zion Comes.” Holy Week and Easter services will definitely have special music as well.
We have a special choir coming on Wednes-day, March 16 – Martin Luther High School in Greendale, Wisconsin. They are a 50 voice choir and their director is Tim Franz. We will be housing them in our homes, so please be open to showing your hospitality to these kids for one night. Thank you for your kindness to them!
Be with us through this season, Lord,
And all our earthly days,
That when the final Easter dawns,
We join in heaven’s praise. [LSB 418, st. 4]

MUSIC DIRECTOR

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 6
approached death just as it was her duty as she
lived life.
My Dad was a bit more irreverent (imagine that) and
put it on his Pastor that he was going to have to tell
the congregation at his funeral that “there in front
of you is the shell…it is only the shell…the nut is
gone.”
They both were concerned about our family and
friends feelings, but more importantly they wanted
us to know they were fine it was their earthly bodies
that were not.
Their deaths, as Dr. Helge’s death, energized me in
the critical importance to share the love and saving
grace of our Lord and Savior to everyone around us
so they too may be comfortable in their last days
because of the victory that is theirs, ours through
our Lord Jesus Christ.
This abundant gift is to be shared. It should be
shared at home, at work, at school. It should be
shared by voice, by actions by heart. This is not a
gift that should be kept secret – Jesus challenged
us to share throughout his kingdom, to baptize and
teach.
I can only imagine how many people Dr. Helge
touched in his years teaching, as a Principal, as a
Dean and University President. It is amazing just to
think of how many people he touched in his retire-
ment.
With The Holy Spirit’ assistance it is unfathomable
how many people were then led to Jesus through
the Pastors and teachers and workers that were im-
pacted by Dr. Helge…thousands, tens of thou-
sands…no I would venture to say many more than
that.
My Prayer is that Erich’s death serves as a spring-
board to us to revitalize our Prayer lives and study
to invigorate us to boldly serve as he has served.
God’s Peace,
Jerry

Our School – Stepping Forward with Christ --- March Update
February Highlights by God’s Grace:
School Rally Night held Feb 9. School registration opened Feb 10. Financial aid applications accepted starting Feb 22.
Family Rally Night – Another Big Step Forward We thank God that 68 families attended Family Rally Night. (2/3’s of the school families) Information regarding registration, a new financial model, and other changes at our school for the 2016/17 school were presented. The new financial model enables us to implement the following goals:
No child denied admission for financial reasons. A sustainable quality Christian education for your child. Biblically based stewardship of the resources God has provided.
Why change our school financial model? Our current model does not enable us to meet the above goals and is the one most commonly used by the hundreds of Christian schools that have closed their doors over the past decade. The new financial model is the prevailing model in the healthiest Christian schools nationally. We are implementing this new model now, not because of a current crisis, but to avoid a future one.
Make a Referral We need referrals. Referrals, word of mouth invitations, is the best way to reach new students. We need you to refer names of people that are interested in our school to the school office. Please take a blue folder available in the narthex, school office and church office. The folder contains brochures and other information to help promote our school.

God Cares About You Grant Information Update
God Cares About You (East Albuquerque) Mission was recently notified of receiving a "Reformation 2017 -
It's Still All About Jesus" grant for $16,500. The Synod, in cooperation with the Lutheran Church Extension
Fund & Thrivent, awarded $1,000,000 in grants to help celebrate the upcoming 500th anniversary of the
Reformation. 500 applications were received from a variety of missions and this was one of the ones se-
lected for funding. We praise God for this wonderful gift!
God Cares About You A ministry of Christ Lutheran Church, ABQ, NM.
QUOTE: In Colossians 3:12 (NIV), we are told: “Therefore, God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved,
clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other
and forgive one another if you have a grievance against someone. Forgive us, as the Lord forgave you.
And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
PARTNERS in CHRIST IN THE MISSION: After Pastor Mark, who was here for six years, accepted a call to
Iowa, we at the Mission have divided his duties among us. We are all on track, working at the pace set by
Pastor Mark and have not missed a beat. We are working full speed ahead. For instance, Paul Mueller,
from Immanuel Lutheran Church, ABQ, is now the Director of the Mission. Jim Kunkle, from Calvary Lu-
theran Church, Rio Rancho, has taken over the duties of Pastor Mark in leading the English speaking Bi-
ble study group, along with his monthly trips to Mexico where he delivers supplies and spreads the Gos-
pel. Lionell is Director of the Evangelical Leadership of the Mission. He is a great inspirational speaker
and leads us in prayer and through all of our Evangelical activities; he also leads the team that canvass-
es the neighborhood. He has told everyone who enters the gates of the Mission that they can talk to him
anytime. Morena, Jaime, and Sharon have taken up the slack by teaching the Spanish speaking Bible
classes. Sue, Freddie, and Genevieve lead the Substance Abuse Counseling Program.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM: Sue, Freddie, and Genevieve, who lead the meetings every Thursday,
have a huge responsibility in helping people to rebuild their lives. The participants seek a second
chance, to start life over. Freddie, who was reared in Arizona by a mother who worked for the Bureau of
Indian Affairs, grew up on an Indian Reservation and therefor has first- hand knowledge of how to relate
to American Indians, of whom much of our English speaking population at the Mission consists. The
participants also get a good meal and access to free clothing, bread, milk, etc. to help keep them
healthy. The counseling is Biblically based on sound Scriptural Christian teachings.
PRAYER: Dear Jesus, Please, help us who have been grafted into the Body of Christ as Your children, to
embrace You and to have compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience toward others, espe-
cially those in greater need than we. It’s not always easy to give compassion to those in need, especially
when You ask us to step out of our own comfort zones when dealing with others. However, "There but for
the grace of God go I". Remind us that Christ came to seek and to save the lost, to feed the hungry,
clothe the naked, and to take care of the poor. Thank you for opening our hearts to people who desper-
ately seek You. All of us are one in Your redeeming love. In Jesus’s name. Amen.

March 6, 2016 – 2 Corinthians 5:16-21
“Faith in What or Whom?” by Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Ahlersmey-
er, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, IN
Reconciliation is a beautiful word that describes the universal
and sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. Reconciliation normally is
a two-way street; with our great God, He does all the work.
NOTHING about us – even our faith – makes reconciliation a
reality. Reconciliation happens because of what Jesus Christ
has done.

“The God of New Things” by Rev. Dr. Walter A. Maier III, Con-
cordia Theological Seminary~Fort Wayne, IN
Do you long for the “good old days”? Appreciate the past, but
don’t be weighed down by nostalgia. Recognize how God is
acting for your benefit now, and how he will so act in the fu-
ture. For He is the God of new things.
March 20, 2016 – John 12:12-33
“Palms & Grain Kernels” by Rev. William Mueller, Suburban
Bethlehem Lutheran Church~Fort Wayne, IN
The Palm Sunday crowd cheered at the entrance of Jesus
Christ into Jerusalem just five days before He would be cast
out of the city to be crucified on a cross. The crowd waves
palm branches in the air as a sign of glory and honor to Je-
sus. Later that day Jesus talked about casting kernels of
grain into the ground. What do these two seemingly insignifi-
cant items – palm branches and grain kernels – have to do
with our Palm Sunday celebration and our faith? Each re-
mind us about His eternal love for us!

“Firstfruits” by Rev. Paul E. Shoemaker, Emanuel Lutheran
Church~New Haven, IN
On Easter morning our Lord Jesus rose from the dead in victo-
ry over sin, death and the power of the devil. He is the
firstfruit. We, also, shall rise from the dead in glorious victory
to live with Jesus forever. Just as He has been raised from
the dead so we too shall rise. We shall follow Him to be with
Him where He is.

Sanctuary Preparation
Meeting
Saturday, March 19, 10 a.m.
The Altar Guild invites you to the Sanctuary
Preparation Meeting.
Would you like to see what is behind the Pul-
pit, other than a Nebraska cup?
Would you like to see what is under the veil
and how the Sacrament of Communion is
prepared?
Then, please come to our Thrivent sponsored
event from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Saturday,
March 19th.
As we prepare our Spiritual selves for Holy
Week and Easter, we prepare the physical
Sanctuary and would like to share this with
the congregation and guests.
CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 12
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
Peace,
Leslie
