The Voice Volume : 15 Number : 4 Month : April 2015

On Saturday, the day after the crucifixion of the Lord, His disciples and follow-ers were filled with gloom, for they had seen their Lord and Master die, cruci-fied on a cross. As Holy Scripture tells us, there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their purpose and deed, and he was looking for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus (Luke 23:50–52). Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away His body. [He and] Nicodemus also, who had at first come to Him by night…took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen clothes…as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a gar-den, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid. So be-cause of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there (John 19:38–42). The women who had come with Him from Galilee followed, and saw the tomb, and how His body was laid; then they re-turned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested ac-cording to the commandment (Luke 23:55–56). Next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Phari-sees gathered before Pilate and said, Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while He was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ Therefore order

the sepulcher to be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples go and steal Him away, and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead, and the last fraud will be worse than the first. Pilate said to them, You have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can. So they went and made the sepulcher secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard (Matt. 27:62–66). But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared (Luke 24:1). And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women: Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus Who was crucified. He is not here; for He has risen, as He said. Come, see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disci-ples that He has risen from the dead (Matt. 28:2–7). Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, they have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him. Peter then came out with the other disciples, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciples outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been on His head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed.… Then the disciples went back to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him. Saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek? Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away. Jesus said to her, Mary. She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, Rabboni! (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, Do not hold Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God. Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, I have seen the Lord; and she told them that He had said these things to her (John 20:1–8, 10–18). Later the Risen Christ revealed Himself to the apostles in the Divine Glory of the Resurrection. And when they witnessed that glory, a new awareness of life was born within them along with the power of faith which moved them to new deeds in their apostolic service. It led them into a hostile world in which they were to endure suffering and which met their preaching of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ with enmity and scorn. But we know that Christ’s apostles carried His holy message throughout the Greek and Roman world and into other lands, preaching Christ, how He had come into the world to save men and how, though Himself God, He had taken human flesh and lived as a man among men, and how, as a man, He had achieved incomprehensible perfection. So too, all true believers rejoice on this day of redemption by the great revelation of God’s truth and life eternal in Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. His glorious Resurrection is the foundation of our Christian Faith and Hope. It is the indestructible foundation on which the miraculous structure of Christ’s Church is built. The Resurrection of Christ the Redeemer is the completion of the Great Work for the redemption of mankind from enslavement to Sa-tan and corruption; the power of sin is destroyed and Death itself is abolished. The Resurrection of Christ grants every one the right to call himself a child of God; it is the return of Paradise lost, the threshold of the Holy of Holies of immortal life and communion with God. St. Paul tells us that if there had been no Resurrection then our Christian faith would have been deprived of any foundation or value: If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain… If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins (1 Cor. 15:14, 17). But Christ is risen; He rose the First among the sons of earth, and thus manifested His Might and His Divine Power. Through our forefather’s disobedience to God, sin took possession of human nature, and brought decay and death in its wake. But Christ abolished original sin and cleansed the fallen Adam (Eph. 1:7). With His divine blood He raises man into a new creation (1 Cor. 15:13–26). The Holy Orthodox Church triumphs, exults and rejoices, magnifying and extolling Christ’s glorious Resurrection, the great and wonderful manifestation of Divine Love and Forgiveness and the beginning of everlasting life. On this Feast of Feasts, this Triumph of Triumphs, the Holy Church exults in her love for her beloved Bridegroom, Who rose from the tomb for our salva-tion, and summons us, Her faithful children, to this eternal Feast of angels and men. This greatest feast, illuminated by the light from on high, is a divine pre-figuration of the general resurrection of all those who have died from the beginning of time. And this is so because, as the Paschal Hymn so triumphantly proclaims: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life! (Excerpt taken from These Truths We Hold — The Holy Orthodox Church: Her Life and Teachings. Compiled and edited by a monk of St. Tikhon Monastery.

BAPTISMS:

FATHER BILL’S RECOMMENDED READING FOR APRIL

A CHILD’S GUIDE TO THE DIVINE LITURGY Compiled and Edited by Ancient Faith Publishing

This small book is a wonderful tool for Orthodox children. It is designed to be

an aid to assist children as they navigate their way through the Divine Liturgy. It

also offers an enjoyable way to learn more about the Church and our Faith. It is

written to appeal to children from ages two to ten. The very young child will

learn the basic vocabulary of the Liturgy and come to recognize the various high

points of our divine worship. For the older child the book offers longer Psalms,

quotes and prayers. It also includes the icons and ‘kontakia’ of the twelve great

feasts of Orthodoxy. The reader will also find an extensive glossary in this

nicely illustrated book.

This book is available in our Parish Bookstore.

Due to inclement weather, we had to cancel the luncheon scheduled for February. We will reschedule the pizza party later on this year.

February's meeting was very special. We initiated two new women from our parish and welcomed another who transferred from the inactive Springfield chapter. Calypso Chapter is comprised of dedicated women who believe in the mission of the Daughters. We are once again moving forward with outings as well as new events.

On March 14, Calypso sisters joined sisters from Toledo, Dayton, Middletown, Canton, and Louisville in the District Lodge Bingo which was held in Kettering. We played bingo for designer purses and had so much fun playing a pong game. Thank you to the District Lodge for bringing us all together again with such an enjoyable event.

If you have ordered tsourekia (Easter Bread), pick up day is April 5. Please remember to pick up your order.

May brings us Mothers' Day and our annual Mothers' Day Memorial and Artoklasia Event. It is still $5.00 a name to remember or honor a loved mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, niece, or friend. The names will be listed for the Mothers' Day Liturgy and Father Bill and Father Wil-liam will conduct a memorial for those who have passed and an artoklasia to honor the living. Chairman for the event is Helen Nicholas. Please look for the Daughters' table following Divine Liturgy to include the names of your loved ones.

Granddaughter. Dinner is the night before Mothers’ Day and we are having an event that is sure to be enjoyed by all members of the community. Table Hostesses will be preparing their table decorations as well as bringing the dessert for their table guests. There will be a buffet style meal, cash bar and raffle, as well as music provided by “George and the Corner Band”. We have a sign-up table in the hall taking table theme reservations. Cost is $25 per person and raffle tickets can be purchased ahead of time. We hope our parishioners will bring their Moms for a lovely evening of food, music and friendship .

The April Philoptochos monthly meeting will be on Sun-day, April 19, following the Divine Liturgy. This will be later than our normal schedule.

OUTREACH MINISTRIES - THE GOOD SHEPHERD FOOD PANTRY

Kroger Community Rewards Renewal

Last year, we received $2,716 from our participation in the Kroger Community Rewards Program. This was achieved with an average of 70 families participating each quarter. All funds received were used to support our Food Pantry. Kroger sets aside 4 million dollars to help non-profit organizations through this program. Just imagine how much it could benefit our Pantry if we could raise our participation. Please consider taking a few minutes to attach your Kroger Rewards card to our Church. The process is simple and once you are regis-tered, all you need to do is renew each year in April. If you have previously registered, please remember to renew this month.

Here are simple instructions for enrolling or renewing:

1. Go to https://www.kroger.com/communityrewards 2. If you already have an account, click on “Sign In”, or click on “Create An Account” to set up an account 3. Follow the enrollment instructions 4. Our Organization Number is 82785

We are approaching the end of this Lenten season with the anticipation of celebrating the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. I am

writing this message while our Parish Council President, Frank Cook, continues on the road to recovery. Frank’s welcoming pres-

ence in the Narthex has always reminded me to leave my daily concerns at the door and focus on the celebration of the Divine Lit-

urgy. Keep him in your prayers so that he will soon return and again lead our Parish Council in “feeding the Body of Christ”.

Although the purpose of the Parish Council is to manage the business of our local Church community, the Lenten season should

remind us of a much greater mission. This period before Easter is a time of reflection and preparation for the promise of salvation.

Through prayer and fasting, Lent offers an opportunity to pause in the midst of our daily routines, to assess where we are going,

and to change course toward the path we should be following. Therefore, our efforts strive to prepare us for the celebration of

Pascha so that we may praise and glorify God as Lord and Savior.

Likewise as we assess our individual lives, let us also reflect on our Parish life. Since the start of this year, Fr. William as our new

Assistant Priest has taken charge of the youth programs within our Parish and initiated an outreach to the students of local univer-

sities. Growth in stewardship participation and commitment has continued. We have witnessed the impact that our ministries,

such as the Food Pantry, have on the community. We have completed maintenance work on our Parish facilities so that they will

continue to house our various ministries and activities as well as serve as a place of worship for many years. Yet, there is still much

to do.

Parish Goals in 2015: If the recent accomplishments of our Parish are to serve a worthwhile purpose, then we must set goals that

are aligned with the mission of the Church. They include:

Strengthen our Parish Ministries that teach and serve members of our Parish.

Expand our outreach so that all who seek the light of God and the hope in salvation may find it.

Continue the positive momentum of Stewardship growth.

Maintain and upgrade our Parish facilities.

These goals will generate tasks that will require the help of parishioners in their planning, preparation, and execution. Some of

those tasks are ministry programs that operate throughout the year such as Sunday Church School, the food pantry, the bookstore,

and Stewardship; while others are major events such as the Panegyri, the Car Raffle, and the upcoming Agape Luncheon on Easter

Sunday. All of these efforts provide opportunities for everyone to participate in the life of our Parish.

Lent is the time to seek spiritual renewal and reconciliation with God and with one another. It is when we remember that we are

called to do His will in all our endeavors. The ministries of our Parish have continued to grow thanks to your generous support and

participation. As we prepare to celebrate the Paschal season, I pray that we all strengthen our commitment to making a difference

in our Parish and in our community.

YOUTH MINISTRIES By: Father William Redmon

Greetings in Christ!

Our April GOYA meeting will be held on Sunday, April 19th, following Divine Liturgy.

At the March meeting, the GOYA youth decided to reschedule Taverna Night for April 25th, and to add a fellowship outing to Lazer Kraze to the Lenten Re-treat Agenda. The retreat itself was a great chance for fellowship, and the youth had a blast playing laser tag. We had 22 youth in attendance.

Our April HOPE/JOY meeting will be held on Thurs-day, April 2nd, at 6:30 p.m. Attendance continues to grow (we had nine children and nine adults at the last meeting). The children watched a couple of vid-eos, talked about the story of the healing of the paralytic with Fr. William, played Lenten Bingo, and played tag. If you have not yet made it to a HOPE/JOY meeting, and you have a child age K-6, please consider coming to par-ticipate in fun and fellowship!

May God bless and keep you and your children through the rest of the Fast!

-Fr. William

2015 STEWARDSHIP LIST THROUGH 3-20-15

By Michael Mavridoglou

My message regarding stewardship for our Parish and community comes from my own personal experience that I feel may resonate with many of my generation. My intent is to appropriately convey my recent realizations in hopes that it may get some wheels turning for my peer group.

I was like many of my generation. We immersed ourselves in higher education, began building our professional careers, “found ourselves”, and then eventually started our own families. We bring our children and our spouses into the church and community because we wish the next generation to find the same enrichment and experience that we grew up in within the Orthodox Church.

At this point, we have expectations of what the Church will provide us. We are baptized here, we are educated here, we forge life-long friendships here, we are married here, and we say goodbye to our loved ones here. However, a problem already exists. The Church shouldn’t provide for us. We must provide for the Church. We see the Church through our parents and/or grandparents eyes and take our Parish for granted. It simply “exists” to us. To be quite honest, my involvement in the stewardship of our Church was as dismal as can be until just recently. I didn’t “get it” yet. We must realize that this is not our parent’s and grandparent’s Church. This is our Church.

The founders of this Parish built it with love, hard work, and unbelievable charity through stewardship. We stand upon their shoulders and we owe it to God, the church leaders, and ourselves to carry that torch and carry it well.

In my short time on the Parish Council, I’ve had one simple take away. It is the young adults of this Church that must become more involved. The future of our Church is not in the future. NOW is the time to become involved so that we have a com-plete understanding of how our spiritual home is not only maintained, but also grown. Most would be surprised what it takes from each individual or family to simply keep our Church running day to day. I find there is not a gap in membership from my peers, but rather in leadership. Taking leadership roles in the Church forges new friendships and relationships that can exist outside of the Church walls and enrich our lives.

We can and must take ownership in our Church. Stewardship provides a clear path. We must modernize our methods while upholding the traditions handed down by the church fathers. We can’t keep relying on the older generations to provide the financial necessities and leadership that keep our community and outreach viable. Otherwise, we risk being one “bad weather Panegyri weekend” away from financial turmoil.

I ask that we all look to increase our stewardship pledge, and furthermore seek out ways to lend our hands to our spiritual home. It is ours. We are the future of this Parish, and it is a Parish worth preserving for generations to come.

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Father Bill and Presvytera Anastasia extend their heartfelt gratitude to our Church family for the kind thoughts and fervent prayers offered on behalf of their mother Theodora K. Cassis. The concern and care offered by our Parish made this difficult time for them much easier to bear. They also thank the many members of our Community for their generous contributions to the Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Endowment Fund in memory of their mother. May God grant her eternal rest and His blessings of life to all of you.

Assistance Requested: It's that time of year and the Hellenic Dancers of Cincinnati (the adult group) are already preparing for the dance season. Besides the Panegyri, the Hellenic Dancers represent and promote our culture, Church and Panegyri at functions around Cincinnati. We are in need of costumes and are politely requesting assistance. If you are able and willing to help us create costumes, we would be grateful. Please contact Christy Toth at 502-797-6301 or [email protected].

The families of Angie and Harry Callos would like to express their thanks for your prayers, thoughts, flowers and phone calls. This outpouring of love has been comforting to them during this difficult time.
