This being the 3rd month of the year, we hope that all parts of winter and cold winds have passed. But… many years we have been deceived by the appearance of a storm and occasionally an actual blizzard has occurred in March. Never put all your reliance on weather forecasts until winter is actually over. We just have to wait and see.
On the 3rd of March we note that the “Star Spangled Banner” was adopted as the national anthem of the United States. This should not be confused with the date that Francis Scott Key wrote these words during the war of 1812 at Fort McHenry while in the Baltimore Harbor – But rather this is the date the song became official.
The 5th of March is Shrove Tuesday and this is the official end of Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is often celebrated with pancake breakfasts to signify the preceding period of fasting that has come to an end.
The 6th of March is Ash Wednesday. On this day, Christians get the mark of the cross placed on their foreheads. This shows people that they are Christians. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day period of Lent. Lent is also known as the observance of Jesus’s period spent in the desert.
The 10th of March is the beginning of Daylight Savings Time. When this happens we all have to set out clocks ahead an hour.
The 20th of March is the Jewish holiday of Purim, which commemorates the 14th day of Adar, a celebration of Esther’s deliverance of Jews in Persia from massacre. Coincidentally, this is also the first day of Spring. The 27th of March is a huge celebration in my family. My younger daughter will celebrate her 45th birthday! Where did all that time go? Wasn’t it almost yesterday?
I hope that all of you had a great February and could stay warm and
comfy. See you in April.

Telephone Assurance Program Do you live alone? Are you recuperating from a hospital stay or rehab? Do you want to feel secure that someone is checking on you each day? If you answered Yes to any of these questions, then the Telephone Assurance Program can be of service to you. T.A.P. is a free service provided by Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center and a group of Auxiliary Volunteers. T.A.P. is a daily person-to-person telephone call for individuals who have medical problems but wish to maintain their independence by remaining in their home. The participant who registers with the program provides a medical history and emergency contact or someone willing to consent to the “Good Neighbor Program.” The duties are to check on the well-being of the participant when the volunteer is unable to contact you by telephone. A return call to the T.A.P. volunteer is required by the good neighbor. State, county, and local police agencies participate in the program as an emergency back up in the event the participant and the good neighbor cannot be reached. If this occurs, an officer will make a check on the residence and call the volunteer with information. All information received by T.A.P. is kept confidential. The participant will also receive a birthday card from the T.A.P. volunteers. If interested, please contact Janet McDonald at 410-942-2112
