Bone Health and Osteoporosis Your bone health is one of the many important conditions to watch out for, especially if you are an Asian woman of age. Osteoporosis is a condition that makes bones weak. Weak bones can break or fracture easily with a fall or accident. This can often end with hip and spinal fractures which lead to permanent disability. Osteoporosis mostly develops in women after menopause.

One of the best ways to measure bone health is by using the bone mineral density (BMD) test. It determines a person’s risk for fractures and diagnoses osteoporosis. Early detection and treatment may delay disability and prolong quality of life.

There are ways you can reduce your risk for osteoporosis.

1. Calcium is very important for strong bones, Asian women get less calcium from their diet than most other groups. Since your body cannot make calcium, you must add it to your diet with foods high in calcium like tofu, bok choy, cabbage, and soy. You can also take calcium supplements - calcium carbonate which can be taken anytime and calcium citrate which should always be taken after meals.

2. Vitamin D is also important since your body needs it to use the calcium. Taking calcium with vitamin D can decrease your risk of fractures. The best form is vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).

While there is no cure for osteoporosis, you can reduce your risk with medication and lifestyle changes. Learn how to keep your bones healthy. Talk to your doctor about bone density testing, calcium and vitamin D during you next visit.

Advance Directive: Making Your Wishes Known Making decisions about your medical care for times when you are unable to do so can make it difficult for medical providers and for your family. Having an advance directive will help.

It tells healthcare professionals, doctors and your family members about your wishes for your medical treatment and end-of-life care. An advance directive is a legal document that expresses your right to die and your right to expect death with dignity. It helps take away the burden of this difficult decision for family members and lets your doctor know what you want at the end of your life.

Advance directive does not mean “do not treat” or withholding of pain medications and other comfort measures. This is a common misunderstanding people have. You can express how much or how little you want done for you when you are no longer able to make these decisions.

You should consider an advance directive if any of the following is true for you:

• You want to be sure your voice is heard when you can no longer communicate.

• You want to be sure that your wishes are respected and followed in the event that you are unable to make medical decisions for yourself.

• You want to be sure that you are not placed on life-support (breathing) machines or receive other life-prolonging treatment against your wishes.

If you already have an advance directive, be sure to give copies to your family, neighbors, clergy, doctor, lawyer, and the staff of the facility where you live. Keep a copy in your wallet and bedside so it is available in an emergency if you cannot speak for yourself.

For more information or to attend a class about advance directive, please contact CCHRC’s Wellness Library at 835 Pacific Ave., San Francisco at 1-415-677-2473

Domestic Violence Awareness People usually think of domestic violence as physical violence, such as hitting. However, domestic violence can include psychological, financial, verbal, emotional, or sexual abuse.

Domestic violence is when a person uses his/her power to control another person in a relationship. It can happen to anyone but more commonly to women. Although physical injury is the most obvious, the emotional and psychological effects of domestic violence can also be severe. Emotionally abusive relationships can destroy a person’s self-esteem, cause anxiety and depression. The person often feels helpless and alone.

Children who come from homes where there is domestic violence are more likely to be abused and/or neglected and may have emotional and behavior problems.

Examples of domestic violence include:

• Insulting, putting down, threatening, intimidating a person

• Preventing contact with family or friends

• Withholding money

• Beating, slapping, kicking or other forms of physical harm

• Sexual abuse

If you believe you are a victim of abuse, know that it is not your fault and help is available. If you feel that you are in immediate physical danger, call 911 right away.

Dispelling Myths About the Flu Virus To prepare for the new influenza season, it is important to address common misperceptions about the influenza virus and vaccine.

MYTH 1: The flu is like a bad cold.

FACT: The flu is often feels worse than a bad cold and is usually accompanied by fever, chills, and body aches. Those who have the flu may develop complications, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, ear infections, asthma attacks, or worsening of current medical conditions, and require hospitalization.

MYTH 2: If you already got the flu, you can’t get it again this season.

FACT: There are usually a few different flu strains circulating each season. You can get sick with the flu again from a different strain during the same winter season.

MYTH 3: If you are young and healthy, you don’t need the flu vaccine.

FACT: The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older. It is better to be protected against the flu, than to become sick and have possible complications.

MYTH 4: The flu vaccine can give you the flu.

FACT: The flu vaccine can NOT give you the flu. There are two different ways to get the flu vaccine – the shot and the nasal spray. The shot uses an inactive flu virus that cannot multiply in the body to make you sick. The nasal spray uses a weakened flu virus that might appear to give you a cold, causing runny nose, nasal congestion, and cough, but not the flu illness.

MYTH 5: You don’t need the flu vaccine every year.

FACT: The predominant circulating strains of the flu changes each year, and so the flu vaccine changes each year too. It is recommended to receive the flu vaccine every year to protect against the different circulating flu strains.

For information on where you can get your flu shot, please refer to the inserted flyer or contact CCHP Member Services.

Health Care for the Elderly Whether you are in the best of health, or need special attention, besides you and family, your primary care doctor is the most important person to help you plan for your overall health. On your next visit, your doctor may ask you questions about your overall well-being.

1) FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT

Your primary care physician (PCP) gathers information by asking about your day-to-day life that may not be directly related to your health:

a. Can you perform daily activities such dressing, bathing, cooking or using the bathroom without help?

b. How well can you walk? Do you use a cane or front wheel walker?

c. Can you pay your bills without any help? Who helps you with paying your bills?

d. Can you live independently? Are there people who help you out on a daily basis?

2) PAIN ASSESSMENT

As an older person, you often have pain, both acute and chronic in nature. The doctor’s job is to help you lead a more comfortable life. If you are in pain, your doctor will ask you questions about where the pain is, what the pain is like and how long you have had it. Through interviews, lab tests and imaging studies, the doctor determines whether your main source of pain is psychological or because of a disease. Then the doctor can properly come up with a treatment plan which can be more effective than prescription for pain medication.

3) MEDICATION REVIEW

Some elderly people have serious medication problems because of multiple medications that work against one another; such mistakes can prove to be fatal. This happens because some people see multiple doctors, for the same illness, in the same period of time. It is also not uncommon to find in their medication cabinet plenty of duplicate medications.

Most medication mishaps can be prevented if you bring ALL your medications to your primary care doctors (PCP), including Chinese herbal medicine, to the office each and every single visit. The doctor

will want to make sure you are taking the right medication and dose for your condition.

Above article is contributed by CCHCA physician, Dr. Towie Fong. For more information, please contact your primary care doctor or CCHP Member Services.

Better Healthcare through Technology and Innovation To serve the community better, Chinese Hospital is proud to announce a new and exciting telemedicine program partnering through a grant from AT&T Foundation.

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine is the exchange of medical information from one place to another through electronic communications as a way to improve a patient’s clinical health status. Telemedicine includes a variety of applications and services including two-way video, email, smart phones, wireless tools and other forms of technology.

What is telemedicine used for?

Telemedicine can be used to consult with specialists in primary and emergency care settings. This may involve live interactive video between physicians or exchanging patient health information. Telemedicine can also be used for remote patient monitoring, where devices collect and send patient data to the provider. This allows providers to better monitor and care for their homebound patients.
