2009 Lake Run Club Circuit RacesNot all race dates are confirmed. All races are subject to change.

• Points are awarded on an age group ba-sis. A first place finish in the age group will award that runner the maximum number of points for that race. (i.e. 1st place in age at a 5K will earn 35 points, 2nd = 34, etc.) Points possible for each race are listed in the far right column in the table on the left. For races with two distances, the higher of the points is for the longer distance.

• Members who participate in 7 circuit races AND earn 50 volunteer points will win an award. The top 10 race scores will count for the final circuit point total.

• Age group is determined by the age of the participant at the FIRST RACE on the CIRCUIT (Miller Park Zoo 5K).

• Age groups for the circuit are as follows (for both male and female):

14 & under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over.

John LaMarra’s running philosophy is pretty simple – just get out and do it. He claims to have been running for 26 years, 4

months, 22 days as of this afternoon. (But who’s counting?) The “why” of his running career he credits to serendipity. Sounds interesting – can’t wait to find out more!

J & G Team: John, who was your running inspiration?

John: Johnny Kelley, Steve Prefontaine, and many, many long time local runners.

J & G: Where does the Lake Run Club fit into your history?

John: I was running around Lake Bloomington long before there was a formal Lake Run Club, so it seemed only right that I should join.

J & G: A man with history – that’s what we like. Tell us about your first historic race, please.

John: Miller Park 10K in the ear-ly 80’s – cold day – only thing I recall is my shoe came untied and I could hardly breathe at the end (and I was MUCH younger then).

J & G: Weren’t we all. Do you have a race you’d call a favorite?

John: I don’t have just one favor-ite – some are the course, some the ambiance, others the friends who go along, the swag, the chance at a trophy (almost never), etc.

J & G: Do you have a special race memory you would share with our running readers?

John: Crossing the finish line at the Chicago Marathon hand in hand with my wife for her first marathon – far and away the best.

J & G: Where are you running these days?

John: Any route that Greg Yount leads – he runs nice and easy and always knows how long the route is.

J & G: What’s your dream race?

John: The Big Sur Marathon. Go to Big Sur, California and you’ll see why.

J & G: John, most runners have a great, “You’ll never believe

what happened on my run today” story. How about you?

John: No, but my wife has a great wet cement running story.

J & G: That was her??!! Just kidding. Is Chilly Chili the most unusual race you’ve ever taken part in?

John: I’ve never been to Bay to Breakers, so Chilly Chili wins. I’ve even had the honor of assisting the Hawk (Dave Hawkinson)

with his (in)famous Spam Stop.

J & G: Awesome on the SPAM stop! Couldn’t have a Chilly Chili without it! Back to the matters at hand… Do you know who Rich Beal is and have you ever had a sighting?

John: Worked with him for about 20 years; but only limited sightings.

J & G: EGAD! Rich works? We’re stunned. Just one more piece in that complex puzzle known as Rich Beal. Are you training for a particular race right now?

John: Not really training – trying to recover from Achilles tendon-itis. Not sure running is the best cure, but I have a really bad run-ning jones, so I can’t stop.

J & G: Who have you been run-ning with lately?

John: It’s a long list – we have a group on Saturday morning that numbers between about 5 and 20 on any given Saturday.

J & G: What motivates you to stick with it?

John: Everyone who gets out and does it – new runners, long timers, sloggers, speedsters – the entire fraternity of runners provides constant motivation. And I’ve never finished a run and regretted having done it. It’s just that simple.

And it is that simple, John. Thanks for sharing with us.

Cruise to Runby Sherry Detloff

It all started last winter with an article in Runner’s World magazine about a running va-cation aptly titled “Cruise to Run.” Being sick and tired of snow and ice, Deb McNamara promptly emailed several of her running buddies about this ad-venture to see if she could stir up any interest in a winter 2009 tropical running vacation.

Within minutes, Deb had re-ceived affirmative responses from several Lake Run Club mem-bers expressing interest. Within days, newsletter editor Vicki King was wondering how many articles she could squeeze out of her friends. And within weeks, when the airlines began announc-ing they planned to charge for extra luggage, Connie Reeser-Hall was wondering how many layers of clothes she could wear on the plane.

Before long, a total of 7 LRC members plus 2 non-running spous-es had plunked down their security deposits and made it official: we’re going cruising and running – the best of both worlds!

So, you may be asking yourself, “What in the world is Cruise to Run?” A car show? A drive-in? No, Cruise to Run is the brainchild of a Canadian couple, Jerry and Jody Friesen (pro-nounced freezin’, which it probably does a LOT up there…) Jody is a travel agent who was having trouble convincing her runner husband Jerry to go on a cruise. I’m not sure whose idea it was to suggest a cruise for runners, but the planning began and in 2007, the first Cruise to Run took place.

138 runners took part in that first “ultimate runner’s vacation”; a number that grew to 144 in 2008, and ballooned up to 304 runners this year. Quite a few runners were repeaters, having partici-pated in two or even all three years.

Our group was aboard the Caribbean Princess, the largest ship in the Princess Cruise Lines fleet. The itinerary called for a full day at sea (Monday), followed by stops at five different Caribbean islands (Tuesday through Saturday). The Friesens scheduled an organized race or run at each stop:

Barbados – 5K chip-timed road race• St Lucia – Vigie Lighthouse 8K run• Antigua – Fort Barrington 13K run in the morning and an • afternoon Hash House runTortola – Challenge the Mountain 6K run• St Thomas – 5K prediction run; no watches allowed•

Each day or evening also included a non-running get-together of some kind. Monday morning was devoted to registration and T-shirt pickup, a question and answer period, and a T-shirt ex-change among the runners. Tuesday evening was the cocktail party. Lisa Bentley, an eleven time Ironman champion was the very motivational speaker at Wednesday’s gathering. We used

one of her sayings quite often during the week – “Throw your heart over the hill and your body will follow.” Lisa has Cystic Fibrosis, but does not let that “slow her down” as she works to set a positive example for others, especially children, with CF.

Thursday evening we listened to Dick Beardsley (remember the “duel in the sun” with Alberto Salazar at the 1982 Boston Olympics?) humorously and gut-wrenchingly describe his early running career (he desperately wanted a letter jacket in high school but was too small for football…) followed by several ter-rible accidents that left him addicted to pain killers. He has been sober since 1997, and is dedicated to helping others overcome chemical dependency addictions.

Bart Yasso (you’ve heard of the Yasso 800’s, right? Good, just don’t ask me to explain them…) spoke at the Friday evening get-together. He has travelled the world to many unique races, and he has some great stories to tell about them. Everyone in our little LRC group except yours truly and my husband Steve had already heard Bart speak two years ago at the Key West, Florida Half Shell half marathon.

And finally, Saturday evening brought the end-of-the-cruise par-ty and awards night. We saw ourselves on the big screen many times that night as they showed pictures that had been taken throughout the week. Unfortunately for some of us, a few of those pictures were taken from behind, as we attempted to run up a hill or mountain (“Throw your heart over the hill…”)

I know you’re just dying to hear about the actual running events, aren’t you? Be patient. Over the next few months, our running ex-periences (with fabulous pictures!) will be faithfully documented island by island. (Did I mention that Vicki has a way of coercing people into writing articles??) Today’s “Observations” is just to whet your appetite and perhaps plant a seed in your mind about how you can escape next winter’s ice and snow!

Is this February thaw for real, or are we in for more winter? It’s hard to imagine below-zero temperatures when the snow’s all melted and the temps are in the 60’s. I hate rude awaken-ings, but I think we’re probably going to have more winter.

However, regardless of the weather, running continues! Catch The Wave and Ride The Wave are alive and well and will be kicking off in late February. Look for a new venue for CTW at a location on the Quad at ISU. Since the Quad is always cleared of snow, this is a sensible location. Parking shouldn’t be an issue to a bunch of RUNNERS! So no complaining!

RTW is at the same venue – White Oak Park. Both CTW and RTW are happening on Wednesdays this year. So far organizers have not experienced any problems with that scheduling.

The Miller Park Zoo 5K is just around the corner on March 7. I remember running that race in shorts one year, but usually the Zoo race is noted for the crummy weather it enjoys.

St Pat’s 5K will be on Sunday, March 15 at the VFW and will be chip timed. Volunteer points are available for volunteering to help with the finish line. Be sure to check out our new volunteer signup procedure, online at www.lakerunclub.org.

With two half marathons and a full marathon in April at nearby locations, our long distance runners have plenty of reasons to keep training through the rest of winter. Rumor has it that the inaugural Illinois Marathon on April 11 may reach capacity! If you’re inter-ested, sign up NOW. But don’t forget the Lincoln Memorial Half Marathon on April 4. With the 200th Anniversary Celebration of Lincoln, this race may hold some great surprises.

Think spring! See you all on the trail!

Volunteer Committee (Jill Usiak): Jill is in the process of get-ting the 2008 circuit awards for the banquet. Merlin Anderson and Connie Reeser-Hall have been helping Jill contact qualifying members. The Volunteer Sign Up page on the Lake Run Club website is going well, and Jill is trying to work out the kinks.

Catch the Wave (Bill Hahm): This year’s Catch The Wave pro-gram will kick off Wednesday February 25. The group will meet at Edward’s Hall on the ISU Quad. Early registration will be at Often Running Saturday February 7 from 10am-4pm. Bill re-ports that 18 applications have been turned in thus far, and he has 28 leaders committed to volunteering this year. The leaders are meeting one week prior to kick off at Medici in Uptown Normal for an orientation. Bill has bought airtime on WGLT to advertise the program. He has also received word from BroMenn Hospital that they will sponsor T-shirts this year.

Ride the Wave (Tom Arbogast): Tom reports that everything is set for this year. The group will be meeting at White Oak Park on Wednesday nights starting February 18. On February 25 they will meet at CCHS. He has increased the participation fee by $5. It had not been increased in a few years. He is again offering a “no shirt” option. The Lake Runner • March 2009 Page 9

Behind the scenes of "Catch The Wave" Catch The Wave is a 10-week training program designed to help beginning run-ners learn the basics of running and bet-ter fitness. This year there will be an em-phasis on running at a “slow and steady and comfortable” pace, and getting all

of our Catch The Wave participants to the start line (and finish line, of course) of the Lake Run. We would also like to empha-size, "Don't under-train, don't over-train, warm up easy, and get some awesome shoes!” This program helps out the community by contributing to hap-pier and healthier residents. The club benefits from the program by the runners creating new and renewed friendships, new mem-bers and new volunteers. (Several of the team leaders are "gradu-ates" of the Catch The Wave program, including at least one of the coordinators.) This year we have four coordinators for the Catch The Wave program – Bill Hahm, Jack Capodice, Larry and Laurel Schumacher. Coordinators do a lot of work behind the scenes. Some of these tasks include getting the venue for the meetings; updating the registration forms, training guides, volunteer and participant lists, and website; distributing registrations; getting

speakers; emailing leaders and participants; grouping the par-ticipants; ordering and distributing shirts and other goodies; and creating handouts.

The goal is to have 40 team leaders by the beginning of the pro-gram. The team leaders are there to help the runners in the group during the runs as well as providing encouragement (usually via email) during the week. Additional volunteers help with mis-cellaneous tasks such as registration and our practice run at the lake. If I'm calculating correctly, this is my fifth year of being a team leader for Catch The Wave. It's a very fulfilling volunteer op-portunity. As a group leader I've made new friendships and renewed others, run in about every kind of weather imagin-able, seen a rainbow over Lake Bloomington, helped some runners truly "catch" the running fever, cheered some of the new runners at local races and seen the sense of accomplish-ment of some of the new runners completing the Lake Run. It was cold and windy and icy – we loved it! The roads were so icy, I almost slipped while stashing the refreshments along the course. I was worried that not many people would be able to join us because of the roads. Then we saw Tim Rood’s pick-up do an awesome fishtail before Tim successfully negotiated a left turn. When we got to the Sugar Grove Nature Center, we were surprised to see 28 participants, including Angela Smith, the director, who had arrived early to open the Center and set up the food and refreshments. We even had two new ABC run participants – Les Usiak and Brian Ruter. Welcome!

Many of us ran the trails and some braved the roads. The road-runners said it wasn’t that bad if you ran on the road shoul-ders. The trail runners saw deer, leaped a creek, ran by the Funks Grove Church and Cemetery, ran through the Chapel of Templed Trees, ran through Imagination Grove, and ran by the Boy Scout cabin. We did not get to see Melissa Adams climb a tree to cross the creek this year. Instead, she jumped the creek with the rest of us. Sometime after leaping the creek, Jennifer Nickrent commented that she was really glad she ran the trails.

An excellent total of $500 was collected for the Sugar Grove Foundation, a “January PR.” $400 was contributed at the run and another $100 came in later. Specifically, the $500 will go toward completing new projects in their nature play area, Imagination Grove, which is quickly becoming one of their most popular features. Here’s a little more information about Sugar Grove Nature Center: Sugar Grove Nature Center is a hidden central Illinois natural treasure. It contains interpretive exhibits, a bird sanctuary, chil-dren’s discovery den and live animals. The Nature Center is open year round. Environmental education programs are offered to schools, scout groups, and the general public on a variety of topics. Over five miles of well maintained trails take visitors through prairie, forest and riverine habitats. Adjacent to the Nature Center and across the covered bridge is Imagination Grove, a special place where kids can be kids, designed to form a bond between children and nature that lasts a lifetime. This nature exploration area invites kids of all ages to search for fossils and arrowheads, build a fort, tromp in the creek, pretend they are an early explorer and so much more!

The post-run pot luck was held in the Sugar Grove Nature Center building. Angela Smith did a great job of hosting and providing cof-fee, tea, hot chocolate, granola bars, and many other goodies. Thanks much to everyone for your participation, contributions, and food. My favorite, of course, is Meg’s coffee cake. Rich Beal challenged Meg in the coffee cake division (Denny’s makes a good coffee cake). Deb Aukerman’s pumpkin bread was deli-cious. Les Usiak’s pineapple chunks were a

great addition to the other fruit. I don’t know who brought the or-anges, bananas, and apples, but thank you! Thanks also to Carol Ropp of the Ropp Jersey Cheese Store for the delicious block of Smoked Gouda.

Angela Smith’s thank-you email says it best: “Please pass along my thanks to the ABC Runners for their generosity. I was thrilled to learn that $500 was raised for Sugar Grove Nature Center's Imagination Grove! I was so happy to see that the icy roads and chilly temperatures didn't keep away the enthu-siastic group of runners. The thousands of children who enjoy exploring Imagination Grove thank the ABC Runners, too!”

Save the Date! What: Flood Run 2009 - 7 mile run and 2.5 mile walkWhen: 9:00am on Saturday, June 13, 2009Where: Downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Run to Rebuild - Run to Recover - Run to Remember

Despite days of preparation and sandbagging by the entire Cedar Rapids community, on June 13 2008, the city experienced the worst natural disaster to ever hit eastern Iowa. Fueled by a hard winter and heavy rains, the Cedar River surged through down-town Cedar Rapids until finally cresting at just over 31 feet. The water surpassed the 500-year floodplain and reached more than nine feet above flood stage level at its deepest point. Damage and destruction were widespread, as residential, commercial, indus-trial and government buildings were all forced under water. Over 10 square miles of the city were directly affected by flood waters; thousands of people lost their homes.

The citizens of Cedar Rapids have demonstrated extreme resil-ience, but there are still many residents and businesses struggling to rebuild. To help raise funds for the recovery effort, a 7 mile run and a 2.5 mile walk will be held Saturday, June 13 2009 in

downtown Cedar Rapids, as part of a three-day flood anniversary event. The route of the Flood Run will go through the impacted areas of downtown, giving local runners a chance to remember all that was lost in the flood, and runners from out of town an op-portunity to see firsthand both the rebuilding that has begun and the devastation still left behind.

All proceeds from the Flood Run will go directly to the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation Flood 2008 Fund – a fund established to support response, recovery and rebuilding efforts throughout Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities.

Please save the date and join us for this historic event! For more information, contact Kari Lammer at [email protected] or Kathleen Pegg at [email protected].

Flood statistics:10 square miles of the city impacted by the flood• 18,623 estimated persons in flood-impacted area• 1,360 estimated jobs lost as a result of flood• 1,800 students displaced by the flood• 5,390 residential properties flooded• $2.4 billion estimated damage cost to public infrastructure • and future flood management

In the summer of 2005 I decided I might be interested in trying to run. WHAT? Where did that come from? I remembered hear-ing about a local running group that also trained people to run around the lake, so I Google’d it. Found it! The Lake Run Club – Catch The Wave program. I attempted to sign up. Well that’s just crazy! I missed it and the email said the program starts in February and that they train for a specific run around the lake – one that happens in May – every year. Well POOH! I know one thing – I don’t like to run and I like winter even less – there is no way I’m running outside in February!

But who knew?! February 2006 came around and I signed up anyway. I had just changed jobs and what a perfect time for an-other big change. I got all bundled up with four cotton shirts, two pair of sweatpants, gloves, stocking cap and all, and met the Catch The Wave group at the Normal Theatre for our pep talk and run around the quad. I did so well in my half-mile test run that they put me in Group D. Yea Me! (Just think how fast I would have been if I had dressed properly!)

Well, when week number 2 came around I couldn’t keep up with Group D even for the first 4 blocks – they left me in the dust (snow). That was pretty discouraging but I wasn’t going to be a quitter… which is exactly what I wanted to do. The next week I came back and asked to be moved to a different group (Group H, I think). Against their wishes, they agreed to move me all the way to the bottom. YEA! I loved my new group, the team leaders, all of the new runners in the group; and I could even keep up. No wonder I got to know their names!

The training program was hard for me. Did I mention that I was a smoker? I didn’t tell my group, or any other runner for that mat-ter, either. I had been smoking for almost 20 years and had a dif-ficult time getting enough air in my lungs for that first 4 minutes of jogging. But I stuck it out. I ran the 2006 Lake Run and didn’t walk once. I even signed up for TNAM and ran a few more races. But when August came around, it was too dif-ficult for me to continue running in the heat. I had an elephant on my chest and I just couldn’t breathe.

I continued to smoke but I decided I would sign up again for CTW 2007. This time I had a little more confi-dence. I had met some of the Lake Run people and knew the CTW drill. I also knew I could run for 4.37 miles if I put my mind to it. And I did. The Lake Run was a little more difficult for me in 2007. Perhaps it was the weather that day or perhaps it was another year of smoking. But once again I signed up for TNAM and ran a few more races.

And then it happened. On May 30,

2007, I became a non-smoker!

Now what am I going to do to keep from gaining all of that post-smoking weight, I asked myself. Run more! I signed up with Team in Training to run a half marathon in January 2008. I know – who knew?! Although I could only run 1 mile without stopping to walk when I started my training in August 2007, by January I could run 13.1 miles. And I did – I finished the PF Chang’s Rock n Roll Arizona Half Marathon!

Through running (especially training programs such as Catch The Wave and Team in Training), I have made a pretty big life-style change. I went from being a smoking couch potato to a person who actually plans some of her vacation time around run-ning. During 2008 I ran the Rock n Roll Arizona half with TNT teammate Kelli Powers; I ran the Go! St Louis half with a whole group of friends from TNT; and I ran the Rock n Roll Virginia Beach half with Kelli Powers and Carolyn Simpson.

I was also a Catch The Wave team leader for 2008 and had a great time encouraging new runners to stick it out through the cold weather. It was a lot of fun being on the other side! This winter I kept running all the way through December while another TNT teammate, Michelle Chlada, trained for her first half. As much as I dislike the cold, I dislike treadmill running even more so I have been on a little weather-related strike. That strike is coming abruptly to an end this weekend when I start training for my next half marathon. Brrr…

I feel like I’ve came a long way since that first 4 minute killer jog in 2006, but don’t get me wrong – I also realize that I have a long way to go. I consider myself a work in progress. I have 20 years of damage to undo and that won’t happen overnight. I’ve also gained quite a bit of weight. Ooops – I know! I thought runners weren’t supposed to gain weight?! This extra 20 pounds takes me even longer to get to the finish line and I was already slow. So this

year’s goal – run even more!

My next long race will be the Indy Mini in May with friends Kelli Powers, Carolyn Simpson, Michelle Chlada, Terry Plickebaum, Julie Riley, Howard and Sherry Hill, Paul and Tammy Durfee, Carolyn and Danny Trancoso, and AJ Hansen. I have plans to run a couple more half marathons this summer and possibly train for my first full. I am looking forward to new and ex-citing race adventures this year.

So that’s my Catch The Wave success story – Second Time is a Charm! I am a firm believer that if I can do it, anyone can. And remember you don’t have to be fast… slow runners need love too. See you on the trail!

A Work in Progress

Joyce and I departed the ice, wind, and zero temps of Illinois for a rented condo in Bradenton, Florida on December 26. A salute to all of the hardy and responsible souls not wanting or not able to escape as we did.

We discovered Bradenton nearly 10 years ago when staying a few days with dear friend, Dan Gould, the retired Judge and fellow runner from Kankakee. Our stay with Dan gradually increased to the extent that we rented a condo near him last winter. Dan, while farther from B-N than we are, is a multi-year participant in the Lake Run, Park 2 Park, and the Tri-Shark triathlon as well as a loyal customer of my shoe guy, Mitch Hobbs. Actually, I’ve got a bone to pick with Mitch. After many years of lobbying from Dan to send the “fast shoes” to him rather than me, Mitch finally responded and Dan handily left my body in the dust at the Naples Half Marathon on January 18 and the following Saturday at the Ringling Bridge 4 Miler in Sarasota.

That brings me to the subject of this narrative, the “small world” meeting in a store parking lot on January 22 with Dave Hawkinson and Cathy. Our eyes met and we both blinked, si-multaneously. They are also wintering in Bradenton, arriving a week prior to our happenstance meeting, and live only a few miles from our location. Talk ranged to several subjects, includ-ing running. I invited Hawk to join Dan and me in running the forthcoming Ringling Bridge Run. And the big guy accepted the invitation. I prepared Dan for the occasion by telling him that he would recognize the Hawk as the MC at various Lake Run races, especially the stage fright and inhibitions (Not!).

Dan sends an “epistle” of each of his races to a num-ber of running friends in Illinois as well as here in Florida. I’ll continue by quoting Dan’s description of Hawk and the Ringling Run. For the newcomers in the Lake Run Club, and for members who have not had the privilege of knowing the wit and wisdom of the Hawk through such endeavors as the Lawn Chair Challenge, the Tom-O-Hawk Marathon and Half-A-Hawk, or a slice of Spam at the beer stop on the Chilly Chili Run, Dan’s description will give a brief and accurate glimpse of the Big Guy:

“Running the Ringling Bridge 4-Miler is a challeng-ing, scenic, out-and-back road race staged at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center on Sarasota Bay. The first mile is followed by an almost half mile climb up the bridge with a view of Sarasota Bay, Bird and Lido Keys, and the Gulf of Mexico. That is followed by an equal downgrade on the west side, a pylon turn in a parking lot at the foot of the bridge, and back over the bridge with the spectacular view of downtown Sarasota.

“Charlie and Joyce arrived to pick me up for the drive to the race with the Hawk already onboard. I got acquainted with him during the 20 minute drive to the race. Dave has a PHD in BS and measures his weekly training by the miles he drives for restaurant

meals and gets strength from a daily regimen of twelve ounce curls. He’s a back-of-the-packer with a great sense of humor.

“Saturday dawned with 45-50 degrees, clear sky, and no wind. Perfect! Pre-race registration of more than 1400 plus 350 in a kid’s race and an additional 1-mile walk brought out nearly 2000 participants for the festivities. The race is a major fundraiser for the YMCA which has a broad base of support. Last year’s event raised $20,000. It is a family affair with games and face-painting for the kids and plenty of refreshments. There is even a baby-sitting service so parents can run the race.”

So how did this trio of Midwesterners do that day? The race was a gun start with a chip finish, causing all but those on the starting line to be listed slower than their actual running time. Dan led us from start to finish recording a 30:02, good for 6th place in 60-64 AG. Yes, the awards go 6 deep for this event. I finished 30:34, good for 4th place in AG 65-69. That was 49 seconds slower than last year, but pleasing for me due to running struggles I had encountered during the past three months.

The real story of the day is the Hawk’s finish. How did he do with his ultra minimal training routine? His 50:18 finish placed him at number 45 of the 46 in AG 60-64, and number 1069 OverAll. Considering all the participants that day, and completely ignoring whether they ran less than 4 miles, Hawk graduated from being a back-of-the packer to a middle-of-the-packer. And he handily defeated Florida Age Group Ace and holder of numerous road race records, 94 year old Ray Grills, by nearly 18 minutes. With this taste of success where do you suppose the Hawk will go with

his talent?

While basking in the warm sunshine post-race, the Hawk and I lamented on the thrills we were missing out on during that day’s Chilly Chili Run. The absence of Spam and beer at the Hawk’s rest stop was an additional burden for you hardy souls to endure. We quickly found other subjects to occupy our thoughts.

There is an epilogue to this story. While Dan and I cross-train on Treks, Hawk utilizes his Harley for two wheel pleasure and pain. With near daily reports of motorcycle collisions in Florida this winter, Dan cautioned him about riding in an area where so many auto drivers are 80 plus, and we invited him to participate in the scheduled cross-training for the following Monday. Joyce and I were relocating from one rented condo area to another, and after seeing Hawk’s pickup truck and large size body, we quickly gave a vigorous selling pitch to entice him to join in for the fun. And it was fun for all, and evidently saved my back enough that I could overtake the Judge at the following Saturday’s Pride School 5K, finishing 39 seconds ahead of him in 22:50.

Again, a hardy salute to my Illinois friends. We’ll see you when the grass turns green. And remember the welcome mat is always out for visitors in our little piece of heaven in Bradenton.

With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy, and with thanks to my running friends who contributed to this list,

You might be a runner if:You risk being late to important family gatherings because • you have to get your run in first.Everything on your Christmas list is running-gear-related.• You look closely at runners as you drive by just in case you • know them. You count calories in terms of equivalent miles.• You know what a race bandit is.• You can say fartlek without laughing.• Your “grab in case of emergency evacuation” list includes • your running shoes. In the summer, your car smells like a high school locker • room. You know all your friends’ ages… in 5 year increments.• You schedule your personal and business travel around races • – both local and at your destination. You always dress in layers, out of habit.• You spend more time choosing workout clothes than work • clothes. The economic crisis causes you to cut back on extras like • food, clothing and shelter, but not necessities like energy bars, running shoes, or race entries. When you hear the phrase “energy crisis” you assume it’s • another reference to eating properly before, during, or after a race.As soon as the test is positive, you add jogging stroller to • your baby shower list. When you overhear someone say “oooh that feels so good” • you assume they’re stretching after a long run…You can do metric/mileage conversions in your head.• You always have a bag of frozen peas or corn in your • freezer. When you walk into Often Running, • Mitch already knows your shoe size and favorite brand. You look at someone’s legs and think “nice fast-twitch • muscles!”You can recognize your friends from a distance by their • gaits. You recognize race shirts from a distance and can often • name the year and distance. You keep a supply of safety pins in your car.• You have great quads from “hovering” in port-a-potties.• You know where every port-a-potty (or high stand of weeds) • is along the Trail. You carry toilet paper – just in case.• You own more reflective clothing than the line crew at the • airport. You know that a marathon is 26.2 miles.• You know what wicking is.• You know that gel is not just for your hair.• You think that a bagel & peanut butter is ambrosia.• You buy Gatorade by the case.• Your idea of shopping heaven is a runner’s expo.• You can name every muscle in the hip, leg and foot.• You know “all” the uses for body glide.•

You have ever had black toenails.• You have ever lost toenails.• You have ever considered buying a “toenails are for sissies” • sticker. You defend carbohydrates when people talk about low-carb • diets. You schedule your weekend plans around your long runs.• 55 degrees sounds like perfect weather.• You have to wear your sport watch every day because you • have serious “tan lines” on your wrist. You’d rather think about additions to this list than your gro-• cery or to-do lists…

And finally, you might be a Lake Run Club runner, in central Illinois, in mid-winter if:

Your treadmill has a permanent spot in front of your TV • during Jan and Feb.You actually think about creating a Chilly Chili “outfit.”• You attend at least one winter ABC run so you can have • bragging rights. You attend the awards banquet so you can at least talk about • running (because heaven knows, you certainly can’t talk while running – not with a hat on, your hood up, and your head down). You paid your LRC renewal dues by Feb 28 so you could • save $5, to spend on your next race!

You might be a runner…
