Jr. & Ladies Trap Have Great Season

- Gary Kandler, Jr. & Ladies Trap Lead Coarch

On Sept. 17th. we wrapped up our 2017 trap season with a banquet to honor our shooters. We had many prizes to give out including a Remington 870 12 ga. shotgun as our major prize.

This season, we had 24 shooters sign up and we handed out 13 different shooting awards. Those included:• 4 Pro-Marksman• 5 Marksman• 3 Marksman 1st Class • 1 Sharpshooter award

We shot 314 total rounds and 7850 shots. At our end of the seasons banquet. we also honor one shooter with the John Mathews Award. This award is given to a shooter that maintains a good attitude, has respect for other shooters, shows safe gun handling, and listens and learns gun safety.

This year’s award went to Xaviar Perez. Xaviar has been shooting for several years now and has gained the respect of all of our coaches.

I want to thank our coaches, Duane Whaley, Keith Wright, Norris Cove, Dan Reid, Jerry Shihady, and Brian Brownell, and we couldn’t have done it with out the help of Ron Crowe and Mac McKenzie, and all the parents who bring their children each week.

Last year we only had one shooter in our Rookie Division and none this year. Our goal is to get more younger kids involved for our 2018 season, so members, if you have children in 5th grade and up and who would like to learn to shoot, bring them out for a great time. Keep a lookout in the early Spring newsletters for more about signing up for the 2018 season.

For Club Members Who Cannot Attend Meetings

We know many of our members aren’t able to attend the regular monthly membership meetings. Because of that, we have someone who can be your voice to the COSC Board.

If you have suggestions, problems, or concerns involving COSC, longtime member, Stu Miller, acts as a member representative to those who cannot attend the meetings, but would like to bring up a point of concern or suggestion to the COSC Board at the Board Meetings.

Stu can be contacted via snail mail at: Stu Miller c/o COSC PO Box 375 Dimondale, MI 48821 or via email at [email protected]

COSC Archery Season Wrap Up

- Steve McGarry, Archery Co-Leader

The Chief Okemos Archery range was in need of management and oversight for it to continue to stay open. Interested members started out the year looking to find help to keep the range open. All members interested in archery were asked to attend a meeting to decide the fate of the archery club. Members Mark Richardson, Roger Brown, and Steve McGarry were asked to manage the archery range, with guidance from Dennis Dann, Stu Miller, and Bill Shepard. Interested members that attended the early meetings were added to an email and phone list to be kept informed of archery range projects, such as the setup of the 3D Range, spraying, mowing, and winter storage of targets.

Field Target Projects - 2017 • Replaced bag targets • Replaced the wood roof on bag target houses

Flipped bag targets after 100 shots to extend life of target

• Development of Youth Archery Program (Tim Hodgeman)

• Boy Scout merit badge archery shoot

3D Range Projects - 2017• Repaired broken hand rail on raised platform on

targets 29, 30. • Power washed raised

platforms • Replaced rotten stair treads

on raised platform, targets 10, 11

• Rebuilt 5 out of the 40 bow racks used in Archery range

• Sprayed three times for weeds on 3D shooting lanes, cut back giant ragweed, 10’ tall from falling into trail

• Grass mowing twice a week • Controlled ant infestation in all 3D targets • Replaced 7 worn out 3D targets • Treated new 3D targets with UV and water seal

protection

• Relocated 1 target backstop for arrow control and built 3 new backstops

The 3D range brought in $500 from May 1, 2017 to September 11, 2017

Thank you, everyone that made it out Oct. 15 at noon to help bring in the 3D targets. It’s hard to plan around rain. But we had a break after days of rain and we got the job done.

Archery Plans for 2018

Unfinished projects: • Put new tin roof on 3 field houses for bag

targets.• Continue replacing worn out 3D targets • Paint and water seal old 3D targets • Continue with ant control on 3D range.• Spraying of weed control in shooting lanes and

along pathways

New projects:• Additional 23 backstops for 3D targets • Replace the current scorecard box with a new

mouse proof box.• Add bracing to the 2nd set of steps to control

swaying on the raised platform 10-11 • Change path around targets 10 and 11, due to

two safety concerns and the out of standard layout. I propose cutting a short path from the base of the elevated platform between targets 11 and 12. We can take the brush from the new path and cover the old one, which in time will grow

over. This will help to alleviate people walking in from other directions.

• Planning dates for 2018 bow shoots ASA, IBO?• Getting involved with Michigan Archery Associa-

tion (MAA)?

Deer Report & Check Stations in the Area

- Steve McGarry, Archery Co-Leader

I hope everyone’s bow season is going well. Deer are starting to check out doe in Estrus scent wafers. I had a deer standing next to a scent wafer last night in the dark. I’ve had fair luck with scent wafers. They don’t cost much and last a couple of years. Two years ago, I shot a coyote over a two-year old scent wafer. Later that sea-son, I shot a buck off the same scent wafer. I’m still using the same ones this year.

Trail cams showing most big bucks still moving at night. If you did arrow a deer and would like to get it checked by the DNR. you have 72 hours to get it to a check station. This will help the DNR gage the health of our deer in Michigan. They can answer questions, like how old your deer is, and check for things like bovine tuberculosis, and chronic wasting.

The DNR are always easy to talk with and have all sorts of useful information to pass along. Don’t forget your Successful Deer Hunter patch.

Here are the Lansing area check stations, address, and phone numbers and hours.
