Introduction
What is chickenpox?• Viral illiness– Very itchy, red rashes, fever with bodypain – More common in childhood– More important in adults and pregnant women
• Virus name– Herpes varicella zoster

Signs & Symptoms
• Very itchy rashes*TrunkNeck,Face,Limbs (Rashes in Crops)
• Red bumps• Blisters, filled with clear fluid(1-5mm or more in size) drainscab
• Fever with body ache*on the day or 1st day before rash appears
• MOUTH ,SCALP , AROUND EYES , GENITALS painful• Cycle repeats in crops

If those signs & symptoms appear, visit Doctor ASAP preferably within 24 hours

Transmission of disease
• Highly contagious , via – Droplets from sneeze/cough– Clothing , Bed linens– Oozing blisters of infected person
• 1-2 days before rashes appear and until completely the rashes dried up

Incubation Period• Anyone can develop disease anytime between
10th to 21st days after coming in contact with the diseased person
(10-21 days)

Treatment (How doctors treat)
• Antiviral Medicine(Acyclovir)– Valuable if started within 24hrs of appearance of
rashes.– Shortens the duration/severity of symptoms– Usually not necessary for previously healthy child
• Symptomatic– Paracetamol, cetrizine, calamine lotion

Treatment(Home management)
• Supportive– Rest , oral fluids– Cool wet towel over the skin allow to dry– Use oral lozenges and ointments for oral cavity
rashes(as per doctor’s advice)– Maintain hygiene of skin rashes – Avoid hot and spicy foods in case of oral ulcers

When to review with doctor? (Emergency Signs)
• Severe skin pain• Sleepiness, lethargy , stiff neck• Cough with sputum• Painful skin rashes with green discharge
*** on 7th day of antiviral medicine visit your doctor as routine review***

Management
• Isolation– Take leave from job– Don’t send your sick child to school, public places,
social gatherings etc.– Isolate your guest ASAP
***Consult your doctor for duration of isolation***

Prevention
• Vaccination– No need if once already infected– For child:2 doses (12-18 months) & (4- 6 years)– For Adult: 2 doses with a gap of 4 to 8 weeks in
between
*** Before vaccination, Please give a clear history regarding pregnancy, fever, allergy & medication ***

Chickenpox- In Hotel Context• For staffs – Inform management – Visit Doctor within 24 hours
• Towards guests– Be vigilant for any guest with complaint of fever and rashes– Approach doctor with the guest immediately– Isolation
• For housekeeping– Isolate the sick guest’s bed linens , towels , handkerchief ,
cloths and treat(wash) separately

Take Home Message
• Consult doctor within 24 hr for any suspected chicken pox ( fever and rashes )
• Isolate the patient and his accessories to limit the spread
• Be more careful for pregnant, infants and elderly and anybody with other chronic diseases(eg.Diabetes Arthritis , Asthma )
