    STANDARD FEATURES ENCL-O-P WRD IVE

EXCLUSIVE STANDARD EQUIPMENT AT NO EXTIRA COSTI

THE MOST EXCITING CONCEPT IN MODERN PRESS BRAKE TECHNOLOGY This is the heart of Series C, L, M and R power-packed performance-exclusive dual EnclO-Powr Drive available only from Dreis & Krump. Encl-O-Powr Drive brings together all ram-drive members into two contained units-one at each end of the press brake. Each unit is, iu effect, a sealed reservoir of power completely lubricated to permit transmission of friction-free drive throughout the entire power train for each complete ram cycle. This exclusive CHICACO Press Brake design is shown beiow in the phantom view of the right end mechanism of a Series C, L, M and R maehine. Note the unique double reduction gearing featuring high-speed herringbone gears, the one-piece eceentric and gear strap, and the heavy-duty plunger-all fully enelosed and running in an oil bath. All side-thrust in the knuckle connection between the eccentrie and the plunger is completely absorbed within the End-O-Powr housing and crown, transmitting only vertical power directly to the ram. The highly polished plunger slides directly up-and-down within the close-tolerance bronze sleeve, exerting maximum force within the rated tonnage eapaeity of the machine. Results: smooth power delivery, less wear, lower maintenance, and fasrer, more accurate bending.

All Steel Construction The frame of balanced design is of all-welded, rolled steel plate construction with deep, box-type crown assuring utmost rigidity and permanent alignment while maintaining a fully streamlined appearanee. All machining on the frame is done on the eompleted weldment. There are no bolted conneetions to loosen and cause frame weaving. Machine is shipped in one piece, ready for immediate use.

Deep Section Bed and Ram Both bed and ram are made of solid one-piece rolled steel plate with extra depth and eross-sectional proportions to insure minimum defleetion when operating under the full load capacities. The bed is welded to the frame. No special foundation is required as bed is abovc floor level in all sizes.

Inboard Ram. Drive Proved through many years of rugged service on CHICAGO Press Brakes-and typical of the design long used by manufacturers of heavy-duty meehanieal presses where severe service is required-the complete eeeeutric gear drive at either end of Series C, L, M and R press brakes is mounted inside the end frame of the machine. A contoured crown with heavy cross bracing, betweeu one-piece side frames all welded as an integral unit, provides maximum rigidity and alignment of the drive housings. Inboard drive construction permits employment of full-width bearing areas in both pitmans, plus added support from inboard and outboard bearing. Distance between points of load application is decreased, thereby increasing ram stiffness. This in turn reduces deflection, even under extreme on- or off-center load conditions.

    PERMANENT MIS-ALIGNMENT

Accuracy Starts with the Deep Section Bed and Ram Deflection of the bed and ram members of CHICAGO Press Brakes is among the lowest in the industry. This is achieved through the use of a single deep sectioned plate for eaeh member. Both the bed and ram are machined as straight and flat as modern precision machine tools will allow, providing accurate aligument between bed aud ram, housing gibs, die holder mouuting, and tools.

Compcnsatiou for normal deflection is provided through use of a removable precision crowned dic holder. Adequate for obtaining straight bends under average loading conditions, it may also be shimmed to allow for a chauging pattern of deflection caused by varying load conditions.

A removable crown, as opposed to a permanent type crown, is particularly useful when punching or notching. With the close tolerances clemanded between pierce punch and die on mallY light gauge metals, simply removing the precision crowued die holder provides a flat bed surface on which to mount tooling. This helps maintain the needed base parallelism between bed, ram and tools.

Ram stiffness increases inversely as the cube of dis tance between points of load application. • IDEAL APPLICATION AND CONTROL OF ENGINEERED POWER!

Double Reduction Gearing and Twin Drive Double reduetion gearing is a feature usually found only in heavier capacity press brakes. High speed g-earing is of thc herringbone type for quiet operatioo and more efficient drive. Thc twin dri"e, which consists of two eccentric gears rotating on fixed, alloy steel pi ns, assures equal application of power over the full length of the ram. Multiple V-belt to flywheel is standard equipment. Drivc motor is standard on Series C and L press brakes-ean be purchased separately for Series M and R. Flywheel and drive shaft arc mountcd on selfaligning antifrietion bearings.

Reversing control permits reversing the motor and ram in the event of jamming or sticking due to improper ram adjustmen r.

Powerful Friction Clutch and Flywheel AsseIDbly A heavy-duty disc-type frietion e1utch is mounted on the drive shaft for effieient drive and sensitive eontrol of the strong, perfeetly balanced flywheel, This clutch is sensitive and can be slipped or inched at any point of the stroke of the ram. Clutch is easily adjusted without removing guards, and maintenanee is virtually nil. Heavy, large diameter flywheel has ample energy for handling any work within rated eapaeity of lhe machine.

Standard disc-type friction clutch is mounted on drive shaft. It is easily adjusted from the outside. Drive is by multiple V-belt to flywheel.

Spring -Loaded Shoe Brake An easily adjusted spring-loaded shoe brake is mounted on the drive shaft of the Series C, L, M and R press brake inboard of the Encl-O-Powr ram drive housing. This self-energizing brake stops the ram promptly, positively, whenever the clutch is released. Unit is completely accessible for normal easy maintenancc.

Rear view of press brake showing standard easilyadjusted, springloaded shoe brake on the drive shaft.

Housing and RaID Gibs Tough, resilient non-metallic housing gibs are bolted to the frame. Abrasion resistance and low eoefficient offriction make these gibs praetically nonscoring. Wear is redueed to a minimum, maintaining gib tole ranees longer. The ram gibs are of substantial length and have highly polished contact faees. They are readily adjustable for proper clearances and accurate alignment of the ram.

Motorized Ram Adjustment with Positive Lock PO\ver adjustment for raising and lowering ram is made by separate motor with UP-DOWN push-button eontrol. Ram is raised and lowered by a ball-bearing mounted, worm-gear drive rotating the buttress-thread adjusting screws inside the plungers. Motor and adjustment shaft are mounted on rear of ram. Split coupling on the worm drive shaft permits independent adjustment to either end of ram. Ram connections permit tilting for die alignment and normal fade out work without gib adjustment. The control used to open and close the split coupling also actuates the positive lock for ram adjustment, preventing any variation in ram adjustment setting.

Extra Deep Throat Extra deep throat can be furnished to permit bending wide material the full length of the machine. Usually the side frames are made deeper, and the throat area may be reinforced, as illustrated. Individual requirements for deeper throat should be submitted to the factory.

    '

    -~._-----_.....

Special Stroke 'vVhen extra clearance is required at the top of the stroke, or for deeper forming, press brake can be built with a longer stroke. With inereased length of stroke, capacity at mid-point is redueed, while near-bottom capacity remains the same. Requirements for special stroke should be submitted to factory.

Air Counterbalance Air cylinders can be attached to counterbalance the ram. These eylinders may be required when heavy dies or attachments are added to the ram. Counterbalaneing assures smoother brake operation with less wear on bearings and gears. It takes up backlash in the gear teet.h, and play in bearings, adjust.ing screws and ram connections. \Vhen machine is used for punching, air counterbalance relieves shock load.

Punching causes shock load. reqUiring air counterbalance to offset shock.

Extra Die Space Larger die space than standard is available to accommodate deep box-forming dies and for other similar operations. Requirements for extra die space should be submitted to the factory.

Extensions to Bed and Ram (Horns) Press brake can be ordered with bed and ram extended beyond standard dimensions on one or both ends. These extensions give increased die surface for longer bends on lighter gauge material. The extension "horns" can also be used for forming tubular sections.

WHILE THE PRIMARY FUNCTION of the press brake is the bending and forming of sheet metal, the die space, stroke, eapacity and width are ideal for a variety of punching and notching operations. Multiple punching on long work, or progressive operations on short work, are both within the scope of the modern press brake. CHIC,\GO Press Brakes in all sizes are available with several modifications in design which extend the advantages of press brake punching to a variety of work beyond the range possible with the standard machine. Some variations are shown in the accompanying illustrations.

Permanently Flanged Bed and Ram with Large Die Area The press brake can be built with permanent flanges on both are customarily used with this construction. It provides a the bed and the ram, providing a large die area for blanking, more rigid support and wider die area for the tooling than notching, punching and wide forming. This provides a very rigid bed support for wide dies and punching equipment-while removal of the ram angles permits a wide range of normal press brake bending and forming operations.

Self-Contained Punching Units Many types of self-contained or speeial punching or notching units can be mounted on standard press brakes either directly over the die holder, speeially constructed sub-plate assemblies, or leader pin die sets. For more information contact the factory.

Both Bed and Ralll Machined for Relllovable Angles CHICAGO Press Brakes arc avaiLable with both bed and ram machined for removable angles. Photo shows angles in place, thus increasing the width of bed and ram to support punching u nits, punching allachments, and wide die sets. Machined commercial structural shapes or j~"ibricatcd angles are used, dt"[Jending on requirements. ''\Ihile the angles usually extend between the housings, shorter lengths may also be used. The angles also may extend the full length of both bed and ram. By removing the angles, a standard press brake is available for forming and bt"ndiug operations.

SPECIAL CLUTCH CONTROLS ... an added link between power supply and efficient production!

Variable Speed Drive A variable speed drive offers ideal speeds for safe, maximum produetion. The low speeds permit forming narrow flanges on wide sheet without fast whip-up of the wide portion of the sheet. Higher speeds are used where the nature of the work, size of the piece and operator's ability permit faster feeding of work. Variations in speed are controlled by a conveniently located hand wheel. Please note that the press brake will not operate in the lower speeds af .full rated tonnage pressure when making bmds.

Special Air- Electric Clutch ControIs Electrically controlled air operation of a mechanical clutch can be furnished as an extra, together with provision for regular mechanical foot treadle operation. The air-electric control can be operated by foot switch or palm buttons. For punching, narrow work and small piecework, the air-electric control is ideal because it lessens operator fatigue and increases production. When slipping the clu tch, as necessary for certain forming work, the mechanically operated foot treadle may be used. rllustration shows fully automatic control with selector switch for inching, single stroke, or continuous operation. Controls for inching only, or inching and single stroke can alsn be furnished.

    41

Air Clutch and Brake When the press brake is to be used e~clllsively for punching or certain high-speed fabricating work whne clntch slipping is not required, it is well to consider the air clutch and brake instead of the standard mechanical clutch. With the air clutch, aireke tric con troIs are required.
