What Exactly are Chemical Reactions?

A change in which a substance is changed into one or more new substances.

Page 3: Chemical Reactions

Why do Such Reactions Occur?

So that way atoms can gain stability. Oxygen will react with carbon because the product, carbon dioxide, has more stability.

Page 4: Chemical Reactions

What is a Chemical Equation? Why do we use them?

A chemical equation is an easy and useful way of describing a change, particularly what is present before and after said change.

We use them to summarize easily what events occur.

Page 5: Chemical Reactions

Should They be Balanced?

Equations should always be balanced as to show that mass is conserved. *Remember the Law of Conservation of Mass*

Page 6: Chemical Reactions

Reactants and Products?

Reactant--- Any substance that undergoes a chemical change in a given reaction.

Product--- A substance obtained from another substance through chemical change.

What IS That Funny Little Jigger?

Carbon + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide

That arrow is showing the transition from the substances being separated to the substances undergoing a reaction and turning into another substance.

Synthesis Reactions

A reaction when there is a combination of two or more substances and a compound results.

C + O2 CO2

A + B AB

Page 9: Chemical Reactions

Decomposition Reactions

The opposite of synthesis. It is when a compound is broken down into simpler substances.

CO2 C + O AB A + B

Single Displacement Reaction

A metal replaces a metal, or a nonmetal replaces a nonmetal.

H + CO2 H2O + C

A + BC C + AB

Page 11: Chemical Reactions

Double Displacement Reaction

A metal replaces a metal, and a nonmetal replaces a nonmetal, except this time there are two being replaced.

Ba2F + Zn2Cl Ba2Cl + Zn2F

AB + XY AY + XB
