LIBRARY BOOKS AND TEXTBOOKSAccording to library records, there are still a number of studentswho have not returned set novels for this term. Could I pleaseask for parents’ help in locating and returning the overduebooks or cover the replacement cost if they cannot be found.Payment can be made at the school’s office.

As the end of the year is fast approaching all books, libraryand text, need to be returned before students leave for theChristmas holidays or, in the case of senior students, beforethey finish school this year.

After consultation with students, the library has recentlypurchased lots of new and exciting books. It is very pleasing tosee so many students are keen readers and active users of theschool’s library.

AMEB

Results are in. All students should be very proud of theirachievements. Our examiners this year were Dr PhilippaRobbinson (Woodwind) and Mr Ivan Cocking (Brass). Just 5years ago, we struggled to get anyone to come out to ChartersTowers, now we have 3 full days of exams, with two very highlyskilled and qualified examiners. It’s a great achievement. Toavoid the nasty August rush, our exam period will be broughtforward in 2017 to May, to ensure students have the optimumchance of succeeding. Work will commence in Term 4 this yearto prepare students for the next round of examinations.

GOLDEN OCTOPUS FOUNDATION

Supporting All Childhood Cancers

On Tuesday 13th September we had a very special visitor,Keely Johnson, who captured the hearts of everyone with herinspiring story. Keely had an awesome, brave little friend Cleoon stage with her and behind the scenes were their parentsCathy and Kirby.

The school went “GOLD for a day” with students dressingin gold and making kind donations to the Golden OctopusFoundation; a great success. Keely also entertained the schoolwith singing her song “Turn This To Gold” which she hasrecorded with Lee Kernaghan. Keely visited our school to helpraise awareness for Childhood Cancer and the Golden OctopusFoundation. This is a little bit about the Foundation and Keely.

The foundation commenced in April 2015 with a committedgroup of parents who have been touched by childhood cancer. The Golden Octopus Foundation was the dream of a younglady, Keely Johnson. While Keely was going through treatmentfor a rare childhood cancer she had the idea to form anorganisation that would help all children with cancer. There areeight groups of childhood cancer; hence OLLEE the Octopuswas born, with his eight legs representing each group. His armswill wrap around ALL children.

Lee Kernaghan is the organisation’s wonderful ambassador, atrue example of a wonderful Australian with his leading exampleto help Australians in need, especially those in regional areas.

They need to create awareness which, in turn, will raise muchneeded funds from all facets of government and industry to helpwith research. The main objective is to improve facilities such astelehealth services and funding for childhood cancer nurses inregional hospitals. Families have to relocate for long and shortperiods of time to major centres for treatment. Most familiesare separated, parents feel isolated and the financial burdens toboth families and our health system are enormous.

Keely’s saying is, “Let’s Go Gold Bright and Bold, So our Kidswill ALL Grow Old”, so let’s make a difference and raise themoney we need to help find a cure for a disease that is thebiggest killer of Australian children. Currently in Australia we lose3 children a week to a childhood cancer directly; many moreare lost due to the complications from out-dated treatments,

diluted adult chemotherapies and secondary cancers. Ourchildren and the next generation of Australians deserve betterthan this.
