The Raider Fencing Team

By: Mackenzie Casais & Joseph Scott

If you spend a lot of time practicing with your team on campus, you’ve probably noticed the tall “cellular” tower near the woods that run along Coolidge. Sometimes you hear weird noises that sound like the rattling of metal, or hawks squawk-ing. However, these things are NOT what you think they are. The tall tower actual harbors the Toms River High School East Fencing Arena. Yes, you heard correctly — East has a fencing team. It is our only sports team that wins states every sin-gle year since it’s creation. Tryouts are simply to make it up to the top of the tower — if you don’t make it, you don’t make the team. The team warms up with ten laps around the baseball field, and then a consecutive climb up the tower. At the top of the tower is the fencing arena. Practice consists of duel after duel between athletes. When you think you heard a rattling of metal, it was really an intense fencing match. When you heard a shrieking hawk...well, let’s just say there’s no barrier around the arena. The reason you don’t see the fencing team in school is because most of them drop out of the team. The true few to survive the grueling practic-es and matches are having a monument built in their honor, which will appear on the middle of the soccer field in the year 2025. If any brave souls would like to join this sport, meet at the “cell tower” at midnight for tryouts. Good luck Raiders, you will need it. Disclaimer: This article is satire. A: I have been involved with Movember for around nine years.

Dennis Miranda Memorial By: Joseph Scott

On Friday, Nov. 3, High School East commemorated the life of Navy SEAL Denis C. Miranda, an alumnus of East, who was killed in action on Sept. 20, 2010 in Afghanistan. Officer Kenny, advisor of the Military Club, orchestrated the event, at which the Marching Raiders played, and many servicemen dressed up in their finest military attire. It’s great to see East show great character by honoring those were honorably served the United States of America.

The Summer I Turned Pretty

By: Jenny Han

The Summer I Turned Pretty is an emotional rollercoaster of a book. It makes you laugh, makes you cry, and makes you angry; so angry that you may want to throw the book. It is a book about a 16-year old girl Isabel (Belly) Conklin, hitting the stage in her life where her physical and mental self are changing. This novel is not just about romance but about family and making the most out the time you have with your loved ones. The novel is also about accepting that things change and that nothing ever stays the same. We recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance, but also wants to read about family connections. This book is the first book of the series which consists of two others, It’s Not Summer Without You and We’ll Always Have Summer, which we also recommend “It occurred to me that I was going to have to make the most of this summer, really make it count, in case there wasn’t another one quite like it. After all, I would be sixteen soon. I was getting older too. Things couldn’t stay the same forever.”

Movie: West Side Story

Release Date: October 18, 1961

Cast Members: Rita Moreno, Natalie Wood, George Chakiris, Russ Tamblyn, Richard Beymer, Tony Mordente, David Winters

Summary: A modern musical adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” in the west side of New York City. The Jets, an Italian gang, and the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, are two rivaling gangs in the west side. They battle each other over neighborhood territory and respect. However, a connection is made between two members of the gangs. Maria (Natalie Wood) is the sister of Bernardo (George Chakiris), who is the leader of the Sharks, and Tony (Richard Beymer) who is the inactive leader of the Jets. Maria and Tony spot each other from across the gymnasium floor and it was love at first sight. At the same time, both gangs have decided to battle it out to end the feud over the territory once and for all. Pros: “West Side Story” is modeled after William Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet”, but it has a modern twist. Set in 1957 with feuding gangs and a love story between members of the two separate gangs, this movie is much more action-packed and even riveting compared to the original. However, that’s just our opinion. Cons: For a movie that was created in 1961 there are not many cons. There are mainly two issues that we can potentially see as preventing people from enjoying the film. One could be the cheesiness in the dancing and the romance between Tony and Maria. The actors dance many times during the movie with or without music which can be quite humorous. However, because everything is choreographed, the big fight scene was bland and wasn’t as climactic as we thought it would be. Again, we found the “romantic” things Tony would say to Maria quite funny, but we do know some people would not enjoy it.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Movie Review By: Kevin Shaffery & Mackenzie Vaz

Responsibility is defined as the state or fact of being responsible, answerable, or accountable for something within one's power, control, or management. Students and staff at East demonstrate responsibility every day by completing tasks in a timely fashion. Being responsible can help students in and out of school, and especially after graduation. It teaches you how to be accountable for your personal agenda and for others who are dependent on you. American author, Les Brown, said “If you take responsibility for your yourself you will develop a hunger to accomplish your dreams.” This is a great example of the importance of responsibility in someone’s life and future. Being responsible will help anyone on their journey to success whether it be remembering to attend a job interview, or completing college applications, responsibility is an important pillar of character education and is essential for success.

Q: Who inspired you to become a runner? Alyssa: My dad was a track coach and got me into running. Mallory: My older brother, Jordan, inspired me to become a runner. Q:Most people have a love/hate relationship with running. Explain why you enjoy running. Alyssa: Running is a mental challenge and painful, but once you put your mind to it anything is possible. My favorite part is the bonds we form as a team. Mallory: The feeling of accomplishment after a great workout or race is priceless. Q: What do you and your team do in order to bond? Alyssa & Mallory: We have pasta parties the night before each race. This season, as a team, we went to Scary Rotten Farms, Six Flags, out for ice cream, and a run on the board-walk ending with lunch at Playa Bowls. Q: What is your favorite type of running weather? Alyssa: I love to run in the fall because it is not too cold or too hot. Mallory: I love to run when it's cloudy and around 50-60 degrees because it's not too hot or too cold. Q:What has been your most challenging race and why? Alyssa: The hardest race for me and my team is running at Holmdel Park. Mallory: My last race ever was the hardest race for me. It was cold and rainy and the pressure to win my last cross country race ever was very high. Q: What is your advice to anyone wanting to join the team next year? Alyssa: I would want them to know that cross country is a welcoming sport. It doesn't matter how fast you run, every-one has the chance to run and have fun. Mallory: Definitely join. It is a very rewarding sport and the coaches and team are super supportive. Q: What is your favorite memory from your time on the cross country team? Alyssa: My favorite memory was going to Scary Rotten Farms together after our race. Mallory: Making new friends with all the great team mem-bers I’ve been fortunate enough to run with. Q: What has been the funniest Coach Schultz moment? Alyssa: When Schultz fell down at Scary Rotten Farms and we fell on top of her. Mallory: When she was calling out my mile split during a race and tripped and fell.

Girls Cross Country: Alyssa Thomas

& Mallory Feigin By: Michaela Cicenia & Isabella Ghanbary Q: How long have you been on the team?

A: I joined my junior year. Q: Do you and your team do anything to bond? A: Totally. Besides pasta parties, we have team kickball and water-bottle football games. Q: What is your advice to anyone that is nervous to join Boy’s Cross Country? A: The atmosphere on our team is very supportive. While the sport is tough, the rewards are rich and plentiful, and you get stronger. Q: Is there anything you do to stay motivat-ed? A: The “pack mentality” is truly a powerful thing; when everyone works together and builds upon each other, the motivation is secondary, and true progress is made. Q: What was it like when you first joined? A: I thought my legs would snap over each other, and I would melt in the early season heat. Q: Did you ever imagine you would be cap-tain? A: Nope…who would want me to be a cap-tain of their team? Mr. Trumble and Mrs. Hay must have been out of their minds. Q: Do you have any athletic career plans after high school? A: Nope, but I shall keep running. Q: What are your plans for college? A: I’m applying to smaller, liberal arts col-leges in the area, Swarthmore being one of them.
