More than one thousand art lovers attended the fourth annual Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce Fine Art Fair, a weekend of color, design and entertainment, held July 17-19 at the Orland Park Crossing shopping center.
The event, a partnership between the Chamber, the Village of Orland Park and Orland Park Crossing gathered 50 local artists specializing in a variety of medium, from painting and sculpture to textiles and jewelry. Entertainment included a children’s community sculpture project, live music and food and drink from local restaurants. New this year, the weekend began with a Fine Art Fair Gala and Pop-Up Shop, featuring live music, wine and appetizers, and the opportunity to preview select artists’ exhibits.
Many thanks to all Fine Art Fair/Gala sponsors for their support in making this weekend a success—Darvin Furniture, Edwards Realty Company, Art a la Carte, Marquette Bank, MB Financial, Prairie Art Studio, The Horton Group, The PrivateBank, BMO Harris Bank, Citizens for Daniel J McLaughlin, First American Bank, Inside Looks by debi Ross, Wehmeier Portraits, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant, Mission Signs, PrintSource Plus, The Home Depot, The Orland Park Prairie, Whole Foods Market.

What a great summer! The village offered a number of wonderful summer
events Memorial Day through Labor Day. Thank you to our very generous business community for helping to make these events possible. The Village of Orland Park could not offer all that it does without your generous help. Know that we are grateful for all that our business community does to support these programs.
National Honor. Jocelyn Bogen, from the US Conference of Mayors, recently traveled to Orland Park to present to the village the 2015 City Livability Award for Outstanding Achievement. This national honor recognized the Anti-Bullying Initiative we’ve been working on with The Bridge Teen Center and the South Suburban Anti-Bullying Coalition. We were all thrilled that Orland Park’s stance against bullying has been recognized on the national level. Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved.
Taste of Orland Park. The Village of Orland Park created the Taste
of Orland Park 12 years ago to showcase the many great eateries in town. This event has become an annual favorite as attendees can visit some of the best restaurants in the Chicago area. Thank you to all of the restaurants that participated and to this year’s sponsors. We enjoyed three days of great weather and exceeded our previous attendance records.
Remembering Vietnam. The Village of Orland Park has been named a partner for the Vietnam War Commemoration planned by the US Department of Defense. As you may have seen in the local media, The Vietnam Moving Wall will return to Orland Park October 1-4. The Veterans Commission needs volunteers to help host the wall for four hour shifts during the four day event. Overnight shifts are available as many people visit overnight. Send your contact information to [email protected] and let them know when you are available.
We also continue to add to our database of Vietnam Veterans’ email addresses to let them know about the village’s commemoration
There are two types of people in this world - those that thrive on the latest and greatest technology and those that just don’t see what the big deal is.
I tend to lean toward the first group, utilizing everything my iPhone offers me, embracing Google Drive at work and attempting new software to improve workflow. Anything that can make me more efficient I am all for it. I’m really excited about the changes that we are making with the chamber’s website as well. It’s going to offer our members some really great ways to market themselves.
One thing technology doesn’t always do the best job with is communication.
Sure, you can zip off an email in seconds to a business contact, use social media to promote your business to current and potential clients or market yourself to other local businesses, but nobody can tell the story of your business better than you do through face-to-
face communication. While they offer convenience, emails and social media can sometimes feel impersonal when compared to a personal conversation or invite via telephone or in-person.
Think about it - are you more likely to attend an event with someone or do business with someone if they email or text you rather than stopping by your business or picking up the phone to talk to you? I applaud the person who takes the time and makes the effort to go out of their way to speak with me in person or on the phone.
One great opportunity for you and your business to not only network with other local businesses but also get out and meet potential new clients is at our upcoming Community Expo. Each year the chamber holds this free community event, inviting local residents in to come and learn what local businesses are available for them and what they have to offer. The event draws everyone from adults and seniors to young families and their children. It truly
Mayor’s News and Notesprograms. Vietnam Vets can send their email addresses to my office at [email protected]. Addresses will not be given to anyone else. They’re strictly for our commemoration events.
Mayor’s Cup Golf Outing. Please join us for the annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Outing at Silver Lake on September 15. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Orland Park Nature Center, part of the village’s Open Lands Program. Details and sponsorships are available by calling Michelle Panico at 708/403-6266.
Information about sponsoring other village programs is available by calling the Recreation Department at 708/403-PARK. Stay current with all that’s happening in the village on the village’s website at www.orlandpark.org and with our Village of Orland Park social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and Instagram.

Resource CornerBack Pain in Children
Back pain is common among American adults, but a new and disturbing trend is emerging.
Young children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and the use of overweight backpacks, computers, cell phones and video games is a contributing factor according to the American Chiropractic Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
One of the most common postural problems is the forward head posture. Since we live in a forward facing world, the repetitive use of computers, TV, cell phones, video games and heavy backpacks have forced the body to adapt to a forward head posture (FHP). FHP will cause the head to lean forward, which will cause it to degenerate overtime from abnormal weight

bearing. It’s like when you see someone walk on the inside of their shoe, you see the heel on the inside worn down and the outside is thick. Well, the same thing happens with your neck.
Medical specialists have noticed a marked increase in the number of children who are complaining about back, neck, and shoulder pain. That’s why it is so important to have your child assessed for FPH and to prevent the neck from degeneration and other health issues that are also caused by FHP, such as headaches, mood swings, blood pressure, and can decrease lung capacity.
Monitoring good posture is essential for optimum health. So the first step in correction is to be examined and x-rayed by a chiropractor to identify the exact measurements of the FHP. Once that is established, a specific corrective care program for FHP is given, including adjustments and exercises. The chiropractic will point out poor ergonomics and situations that pre-dispose
you to FHP and give you practical solutions.
Some recommendations to avoid injury include:• That backpacks not weigh more than 5-10% of his/her body weight.• Backpacks should never hang more than four inches below the waistline• Urge your child to wear both straps.• Limit video game and cell phone use.• Place your computer monitor height so the top third of the screen is even with your eyes and the screen is 18”-24” from your face.• At home, lay face down on the floor and extend your head and shoulders up, while pinching your shoulder blades together. Hold for a count of 3 and do 15-20 reps.
Dr Miriam McParland, clinic director at Integrated Health Solutions, is trained and certified in a variety of services and techniques to treat injuries and issues for children and adults. I am constantly reminded of the increasing need for patients to receive comprehensive medication counseling. Mostly I am reminded by my patients who recount stories of negative reactions to a vitamin, a supplement, or a prescription drug that could have been avoided if they had received proper instructions on medication use. At the time you leave a pharmacy after filling a prescription or purchasing vitamins or over-the-counter medication, you should be able to answer five questions:1. What does it do?
2. Should you avoid eating or
drinking anything while taking it?
3. How is the drug to be stored?
4. Does it interact with another medication you are taking?
5. What should you do if you mis a dose?
If you can answer these questions without any hesitation, you have a good handle on your drug therapy. If you struggle with one or more of these answers, you may consider speaking with your pharmacist to clarify any gaps in knowledge.
For patients who have a chronic disease or take five or more maintenance medications (i.e., for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, etc.), professional medication therapy management (MTM) may be necessary.Medication therapy management (MTM) is perhaps the most
valuable tool for preventing serious adverse drug events.
An adverse drug event is any injury resulting from medication use including physical harm or mental anguish. The most serious adverse events result in patient hospitalization and in cases involving patients of advanced age, the outcome is more likely to be serious or fatal. MTM counseling sessions can usually identify any apparent concerns that may have been overlooked by the prescribing physician or dispensing pharmacist. In addition to reducing adverse drug events, MTM counseling optimizes therapeutic outcomes through improved medication use. In cooperation with the prescribing physician, MTM counseling sessions may lead to recommended changes in drug therapy that dramatically shift the course of patient therapy
in a positive direction. I have seen this happen time and time again, because unless someone takes the time to go over each and every medication, the details of potential side effects, dietary considerations and safety precautions cannot be fully explained or understood.
The era of the large chain retail pharmacies churning out prescriptions like fast food has virtually stamped out pharmacist-patient medication counseling opportunities. Medication therapy management (MTM) promises hope in the form of advanced, patient-driven pharmacy care.
