Managing Human CapitalChallenges in the Recruitment and Retention of Overseas Personnel

Program ObjectiveWork More Effectively Across Cultures

The ability to act effectively across differing work cultures

is critical.

Today more than ever.

Why?

1 More U.S. companies are relying

on local staff to run their international operations.

2 They’re also relying more on

digital communications.

This program enables participants to identify, discuss, and experience the various

dimensions of cross-cultural communications that affect the capacity for managing a company’s human resources (HR) and

recruitment functions.

Values Are UnrelentingCultures result from how distinct

groups of people (societies) make choices about survival and

sustenance.

Over time, these choices lead to mores and patterns

of accepted behavior.

Although we may agree about how a business should operate, this does not mean that we agree on the behaviors

needed to get the job done.

The Roadmap to Global CompetenceEffective Strategies

2

Global competence challenges us to go beyond awareness and understanding

of differences to develop effective behaviors and strategies.

How Do Cultural Values Affect Behavior?

Not knowing why the proverbial chicken will or will not cross the road demonstrates

the challenges of interpreting behaviors from one point of view.

Building Global Competence

Understanding does not mean agreement—with a person or a position.

Effective verbal and non-verbal communications skills are enhanced by cultural awareness and understanding.

Where to Start?

Building a Better Toolkit

Knowing what’s important to us as individuals and professionals

allows us to better understand how we come across to others.

Global competence requires an awareness of your own points of view

and biases, as well as what shapes them.

As the communicator, it’s up to you to make sure both sides of the cross-

cultural dialogue are understood.

How Well Do You Know?

Rank your perceptions of the values below for each culture from 1 to 8 (1 being most important; use all 8

numbers).
