Perhaps the least cause of surprise this month is that the biggest volatility is in the

fish category. This time last year there was a 7.0% increase in inflation from August to

September, but this year we see a 7.7% decrease, resulting in a large swing in inflationary

movement. Looking at the short to mid-term, challenges with both cold and warm-water

prawns, the weather restricting cod and haddock landings, and a Christmas demand peak

for salmon all look to be a challenge for buyers.

Also of note is the large drop in the price of sugars, syrups, chocolate and confectionery

when compared to last year – helped by sugar (as a commodity) reaching a 10 year low in

price in July. Low cocoa prices have also contributed to this easing, although are forecasted

to increase – futures prices for cocoa are the highest they have been for six months.

In other categories inflation remains high for dairy products (12.8% year on year), and

we wait with bated breath to see whether recent drops in cream and butter commodity

prices are sustained. Inflation on oils and fats also remains very high, at 13.7% year on year.

Ongoing challenges with olive oil production are a key contributor here.

Interestingly, year on year inflation in the vegetables category has barely changed.

This time last year prices were 4.2% up on the previous year, and inflation now stands

at 4.9%. We would infer that this is primarily because a large proportion of our winter

vegetables are home grown and therefore exchange rates have had less of an inflationary

impact on this category.

Elsewhere across the categories it is a mixed bag, with year on year inflation up in hot drinks, cereals and soft drinks and down in meat when compared to the rate of inflation

as at last month.

Foodservice Price Inflation (FPI) is at 6.5% year-on-year for September 2017.

The level of inflationary movement has dropped this month and may be a sign that the impacts of exchange rate fluctuation post-referendum

have now filtered through to most of the food categories. Whilst prices are not generally decreasing, the sharp upwards movements that

characterised the second quarter of 2017 now appear to have abated.
