President’s Message by Linda Keathley, CQU President, [email protected] Fall is here and winter is just around the corner. This time of year in our ar- ea there are craft and bazaar shows every weekend. It is also the time of year that quilters start thinking about changing the decor around the house to a holiday theme. For about a week we have witches, pumpkins, and beauti- ful blooming mums. As soon as Halloween is over we quickly change over to cornucopias and thoughts of family coming for Thanksgiving dinner. If you make something for your table or a wall hanging with a holiday theme, think about making two and donating one to the boutique or putting it aside for the auction next year. You might also consider putting it in the quilt show this year. Your quilt work is often much more beautiful than you think. This last month we had an outstanding speaker, Carol Nicholas, who showed the group many beautiful quilts that she had made for pleasure and for dif- ferent challenges. Her choice of design and color was unique and very inspirational. I enjoy a speaker that gives me a nugget or two of inspi- ration and aha moments like “I can use that in my quilting” or "I want to take the class to learn how to do that." I seldom do the entire workshop pro- ject but what I learn from the instructor shows up in many of my future pro- jects. The cost of any workshop is well worth the value because I become a better quilter as a result of the learning acquired in the workshop. At the last meeting I mentioned the proposed idea that we run our quilt show in June on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and omitting the Sunday opening all together. If you have an opinion or concern, please feel free to contact me or our Big QU President, Doreen Johnson. All input on this possible change is welcome. “SEA TO SHINING SEA” QUILT SHOW CHALLENGE

For our 2019 show the challenge is an Americana theme of Sea to Shining Sea. The quilts for this challenge will be in-spired by American landscapes. Dig into your stash, use your imagina on and be crea ve. Challenge quilts must measure no larger than 40” X 40” and must be show ready with label and sleeve, and be measured and photographed by February 2019. Quilt registra on for the 2019 quilt show will begin on Janu-ary 1, 2019. Now is the me to design and finish your quilt so it will be finished by February 2019. Addi onal details about the quilt show can be found at www.quiltersunlimited.org. Karen Eckmeier (www.quilted-lizard.com) will be the 2019 guest lecturer for the annual mee ng. She will teach two classes during the quilt show. From Karen’s website: Where does the name “Quilted Liz-ard” come from? Lizards make me laugh. They’re ny and cute, and scurry around with amazing speed. I began includ-ing lizards in my quilts and loved the smiles and laughs (and blue ribbons) when people looked at my whimsical crea ons. Over the years I realized that I had collected quite a few liz-ard pins, belts, t-shirts, hats…. So when it came me to name my company I wanted a mascot that would make people smile. Judy Newman www.averyfinehouse.com.au and Margaret Mew www.quiltsta on.com.au from Australia, and Petra Prins from The Netherlands www.petraprinspatchwork.com will also conduct lectures/trunk shows, do book signings and teach classes. All classes and the 2019 annual mee ng will be held at the Holiday Inn. Informa on about classes will be a available in a few months. Check the QU website www.quiltersunlimited.org for the latest quilt show news as well as other QU informa on.

Block of the Month

For those of you who are new to CQU, our chapter has an ac ve Block of the Month (BOM) program. Each month, the Block of the Month Chair selects a block pa ern; direc ons and a photo of the block are included in the newsle er and also made available at the monthly mee ng. The Chair constructs the pa ern to check the accuracy of the block and makes recommenda ons with re-spect to color choice. Members turn in the completed blocks at the next mee ng and a drawing is held with the lucky quilt-er winning the blocks. Your responses to last year's BOM indicated a preference for less complicated blocks that used fewer fabrics. Consequently, most of the blocks chosen for 2018-19 are in that mode; some blocks are scrap-busters, while some trend toward a more 'modern' look. Con nuing our explora on of new techniques, this year we will venture into improv terrain (I promise it will be libera ng and painless), while fabric will be provided for at least one of the blocks. Everyone is encouraged to join in - the greater the level of par cipa on, the greater the likelihood that the winner will have enough blocks to make a quilt. And if you like the block, why not make more than one and increase your odds. Be sure to check this newsle er for the next BOM. November BOM a ached Vicki Portley [email protected]

Re-member, this is one of our fundraisers for the Chapter. Brenda DeJarne e, [email protected]

Mystery Quilt wri en by Doreen Johnson

Dear Friends, it’s me to assess the Stash Pile again! Was it a lean summer of fabric collec ng or is the Fabric Bin over flowing once more? This Mystery Quilt design will work out well, whether your Stash situa on is weighing in on the fabric scale as Feast OR as Famine. This Mystery Quilt will measure 60” x 60” when completed, but the design lends itself to enlarg-ing easily enough by adding addi onal blocks and rows.

I’ve broken down the fabric requirements into 3 categories: Stash Scrappy, FQ Friendly and Sim-ple/Selec ve.
