Michael Grinder:Avoiding Adversarial Situations for Administrators & Teacher LeadersMost of us aren’t George Clooney or Halle Berry – they can walk into a room and have everyone’s attention. In the book, Good to Great, the author showed that being charismatic isn’t essential to being a good leader. What are the qualities of a good leader?

Since 80% of communication is the non-verbal aspects, we will explore the traits of a leader. Surprisingly, two tendencies have to be addressed to be a leader:

• We are over-trained in eye contact – we have to know when to make eye contact and when not to.• Our own self-image gets in our way of increasing our range of behaviors needed to handle difficult

situations. This one day program for administrators and teacher leaders explores the HOW TO of leadership. Often your leadership reputation is based on how you present. The average presenter informs. The good presenter persuades. The great presenter inspires.

Take-away:• Understanding the difference between personal peer relationships vs. professional systematic

relationships.• Appreciate the professional opportunity to be seen as representing the district.• How to deliver messages without getting attacked as the messenger.• Instantly increase your credibility so people listen.• Review your day so that you continuously improve.• Manage others’ hallucinations about you.• How to get the elephants out at the beginning so the meeting is productive.• Options on handling an attack.

Michael Grinder:Avoiding Adversarial Situations – the Culture of Influence*Teacher Workshop*Any teacher can manage situations when no management or discipline is needed. We know how to teach. The key to a long and rewarding career is being equipped with management skills.

This one day program for teachers is based on understanding that 80% of communication is non-verbal (NEA) and transforming our understanding of household pets to people. Dogs come when they are called; cats have an answering machine and might get back to us later. Anyone can manage dogs – it is cats that present us with challenges, and there are more cats in the classroom than ever before. And, surprisingly, teachers and cat students don’t even have to like each other… but they do need to respect each other.

Take-away:• Learn the four categories of non-verbal communication.• Practice the ingredients of Avoiding Adversarial Situations.• Know the difference between power management vs. management by influence, and know when

to use it.• Recognize how to impress the cats so they respect us.• Walk away with more confidence.• Overview of the difference between a parent conference and a hostile parent conference.

No More “I’m Done!” Fostering Independent Writers in the Primary ClassroomNo doubt the teaching of writing can be challenging at any grade, but particularly in the primary years, when both skills and attention spans seem to be in short supply. Nevertheless, we teachers (with the very best of intentions) often train our students to be dependent rather than independent writers. In this workshop, we’ll examine practice and identify classroom designs, routines, and lessons that help young writers grow into motivated, thoughtful, self-sufficient writers. Principles of writer’s workshop and six trait teaching will be included.Presenter: Jennifer Jacobson – Author of “I’m Done!”Date: May 18, 2015 @ NYSUT Building, Large Conference room, East SyracuseTime: 8:30 – 3:00 (Lunch is on your own)Fee: Donation of Styrofoam cups or individually wrapped snacks Audience: K-3 EducatorsCo-sponsored with West Genesee/SU and Jamesville Dewitt/SU Teacher Centers

Turning High Poverty Schools into High Performance SchoolsAny educator who has “been in the business” for more than 10 years has witnessed the increase in the number of students who live in poverty, and know their job has become more challenging as a result. What does it take to disrupt poverty’s adverse influence on student learning? It requires for more than individual teachers’ diligent and often heroic efforts. Even when successful, these endeavors are rarely replicated or sustained without far broader and deeper collective action.

Based on award-winning ASCD book, Turning High Poverty Schools into High Performing Schools, co-author Kathleen Budge will provide participants with a protocol for collaborative action. High performing, high poverty (HP/HP) schools foster safe, supportive cultures of high achievement; and build leadership capacity to improve student, professional, and system learning. High-leverage questions linked to each arena of action, as well as practical strategies and concrete examples of how those strategies are implemented, are intended to “jumpstart” participants’ thinking about how the Framework for Action can be applied in their own context. Participants will be provided tools that facilitate self-auditing, action planning and professional learning.Presenter: Dr. Kathleen BudgeDate: May 19, 2015 @ NYSUT Building, Large Conference room, East SyracuseTime: 8:30 – 3:00 (Lunch is on your own)Fee: Free 6-hour workshopAudience: All Educators Co-sponsored with OCM and CiTi BOCESRegistration: CiTi BOCES MLP
