    HOW WILL TRYOUTS WORK?

  • 7/29/2019 Centex Final Packet

    8/15

Who will be my team's coach?

We will wait to establish final teams before assigning our coaches. Team and coach placement is based on the number of athletes who try out, the number of quality coaches

we are able to secure for a given year, and the fit and finish of each coach with a certain group of athletes. All team coaches wi ll be led by a master coach who possesses multiple years of coaching experience and

who is a proven teacher of the game. Our staff is made up of present and former high school and middle school coaches, former and current select

coaches, and former and present college athletes.

How much will travel cost if our team takes a trip? $50 per athlete per trip add-on cost for each out of town trip (Regional and National Teams)

Pays for coaches meals and hotel room You will have to pay for your own hotel rooms (we would try to secure an affordable hotel and

would combine up to 4 athletes per room. We will have fundraising opportunities for each athlete to help defray the costs of travel and team

fees. Parents will car pool to transport athletes to all in-state tournaments

What Tournaments will we play in? Local, Regional and National tournament schedules will be finalized by March 1.

In the case that a specific team wants to add on a tournament to the end of their basic tournamentpackage, the parents, players and coaches can all decide to do so. This will involve additional cost forregistering for the tournament and paying for travel, if necessary.

For example, we will offer Local teams the chance to attend the AAS National Tournament in SanAntonio in July as an add-on.

How will you ensure my athlete gets good coaching and instruction? Master coach model, which allows for an experienced coach to steer instruction. Comprehensive Coach Application process and selection process, including criminal background checks. Unified System of play, ensures that the same concepts are being taught across teams and that there is a

progression through different age levels. Emphasis on skill development athletes will rotate around to different coaches over the course of the

season as part of Skill Development Stations.

How will you incorporate Classroom Teaching? We will devote 30 minutes per week to classroom time (before practice). This time could increase depending

on needs. Video breakdown, leadership, teamwork and basketball concepts will be presented in depth. CenTex Attack Athletes who want to go more in depth can attend A CenTex Attack Skill Academy at a

reduced price during the spring, winter and fall.

How will you incorporate SAQ (Strength & Speed, Agility, Quickness) Training? We will devote 30 minutes per week in the weight room (before practice). This could increase over time. We will also devote time daily to foot work, foot speed and agility training. CenTex Attack athletes wanting to devote more time to Speed & Strength development will be able to Add

On SAQ training Summer Boot Camp sessions to get more time in the weight room at a discounted price.

How will you incorporate Individual Skill Development: We will devote 25% of practice time to skill development. We will teach The 5 Levels of Offense and Defense Individual Model so that athletes can target areas of

improvement. We will use this to target skill development and to give athletes specific and measurable targets of

achievement. Athletes who want to devote more time and attention to skill development can arrange individual and small-

group training sessions with one of our CenTex Attack Skill Trainers.

    PARENT-COACH COMMUNICATION MDOEL

It is important that we establish guidelines and expectations for times when a parent of an athlete wants to work out an issuewith their teams coach. It is part of our approach to be open to conversations and to encourage working through problems.

    Below are some guidelines.

LEVELS OF COMMUNICATION FOR CONTACTING COACHES:

    1. LEVEL 1: PLAYER-INITIATED CONVERSATIONa. The first level is that the athlete involved approaches the coach on his or her own and starts a conversation.b. We believe that player to coach is the most effective and efficient means to solve these types of problems.c. It also teaches athletes to always advocate for themselves down the road.

    2. LEVEL 2: PARENT EMAIL TO TEAM COACHa. If conflicts are not able to be resolved at Level 1, then we encourage parents and athletes to reach out to the coach for

a parent-coach conversation.i.TIMES WHEN IT IS NOT APPROPRIATE TO INITIATE A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR COACH:

    1. Immediately after a game or contest where emotions are high.a. 24-HOUR RULE: We make it a policy to ask the parent in these situations to email us

and arrange for a meeting the next day. This is to avoid emotional exchanges that aremany times tied to the game that was just played.

    2. If they can sense that the parties involved are in an emotional state and feel it would be better tocool off.

    3. Right before practice: They are busy getting their plans together for the day.b. List your concerns in the email and also establish a time of the day that works well for a phone call.c. Coach will respond to the email within 24 hours and will set up a time for a phone conversation.

i.Coach will CC Director and Master Coach.

    3. LEVEL 3: ARRANGE AND CONDUCT A PHONE CONFERENCEa. Coach will respond and will seek out a time to talk by phone and hopefully, address the concern by phone.b. If the issue is not resolved by phone call, then the team coach will set up a face to face conference.

i.All parties will arrange for a time when the PARENT, the ATHLETE and the TEAM COACH can all attend.

    4. LEVEL 4: FACE TO FACE CONFERENCEa. Coach will sit down with the parent at a time that does not conflict with practice or with a game. After practice is

usually most appropriate.b. The athlete involved is required to sit in on the meeting with the team coach, the parent and potentially, the master

coach or director, if appropriate. This is to ensure there are no loopholes and to ensure accountability for all parties.c. Parents and athletes will be asked forDESIRED OUTCOMES from the meeting ahead of time.d. Coaches will address each of the DESIRED OUTCOMES during the meeting.

WHAT WE WILL DISCUSS WHAT WE WILL NOT DISCUSS

    1.

The physical and mental treatment of your athlete.2. What the athlete can do to improve their game. But if youask, be prepared to hearTRUTH OVER HARMONY.

    3. The athletes goals and commitment statements and howthe coach can help hold the athlete accountable to thatstandard.

    1.

Game strategy.2. Other players (unless there is bullying or wrongdoingin which case, we will reach out to the athlete inquestion).

    3. Other parents.4. Other coaches.

    TOURNAMENT EXPECTATIONS

BE ON TIME: Please make sure once we have a bracket and times that you communicate with your coachwhether or not you will attend. Do it early so they can plan accordingly. Please be in the gym at least 30

minutes before the start of your game.

UNIFORMS: Make sure you bring your own uniform and bring both home and away if you dont have areversible. Show up at least 30 minutes before your first game so you can get changed and be ready to go.

BASKETBALLS: We encourage each athlete to put their first and last name on their basketball. There aretimes when we will ask each athlete to bring their own ball to practice or games to be used to warm up.

BOOKS AND CLOCK HELP: Some of our parents will be asking you to help with book and clockduties. At all of our tournaments, we will need some of you to help volunteer with some of these dutiesduring our games. Parent coordinators will probably ask team parents for help. Please understand howthankful we are to get your help with this so that the coaches can focus on coaching.

    MEALS:

Please be sure to send money with your child to eat in case there is a break. We may find times toall get together. There will also be situations where folks have to go their separate ways to get food. Just beprepared to feed your athlete during the tournament.

PLAYING TIME: This is select basketball. Having said that, we will try our best to win. Everyone canexpect to play a full quarters worth of playing time on our LOCAL & DEVELOPMENTALTEAMS. From there, based on the context of the game and the players involved on both sides of the team, coaches will make decisions to put their teams in the best position for success. REGIONAL TEAMmembers are not guaranteed playing time. Your athlete can earn more playing time by attending allpractices, attending all events and by demonstrating improvement and adjustments based on feedback fromcoaches during games and practices.

Schedule a time to sit with a coach before or after practice to talk about problems you havenever during the contest or immediately after when emotions are high.

WILL WE WIN? We like to win. We want to win. Having said that, we will have some very competitivetournaments against some teams who are made up of some very talented players. As this is our first year, wedo not know where we stand in relation to this talent level. Thats just the truth. So stay with us for the longroad and make sure to encourage your athletewin or lose. Because to get where they want to get to, theyhave to do things they have never done before. Some of those things include playing high-level competitionand seeing where their weaknesses and strengths lie.

Over the long haul, they will improve and be more prepared for their coming school year, whichis our objective.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? It means that we are focused on learning ways to help put your athletein a position to succeed. We will work to improve on the mistakes we make and we will work to give a greateffort and handle mistakes and triumphs with the same consistent approach. We may lose a lot. We may winsome. We may even win a lot. But our objective is simply to improve your athletes game in practice and use

the games as an evaluative tool to see where we need to focus our efforts. Especially early on.

HAVE CLASS: We know you are going to get passionate about cheering for your athlete and his or herteam. Please make sure that you represent our program and your athlete and their team in a first classmanner. We dont want to blame games on refs or anything else. We want to teach our athletes how tohandle these situations with the right mentality, and you will be a huge influence in this process.

COACHING: Each team will have their own coach, who will work with them in practice. Coach Terroba,Coach Smothers and Coach McGarity will oversee all coaches. If you have any feedback about the coachingyou are receiving, let Coach Terroba know at [email protected] or at (512) 784-3399.
